Somebody who is up for a HC position does not go into it without being prepared...I think lets say Cowher goes into it. He has his own list of Asst. that he would want to bring in here. Same with Marty...actually if we can get the process done quickly cause of neither being out there already and not an asst. of a coach in the playoffs they can get their staff together fast and quick!
I'd love if Marty came he would bring his son with him...that would be cool But as the OC he would have to be maybe Asst. Head Coach??? Don't know if that would work or he would have to be finished with his contract...or we trade for him
But first would have to be interviews with our current staff. Who to keep? Who to Go...depends a lot of the interview process and what they will bring and if that goes with the philosophy of the new staff.
You can't make a who's who's list of asst. coaches. Actually most will want a HC job not an asst. And they would have to have their contracts up or we must get permission from the teams to hire their assts. So not really in the choice as much as Accessibility.

Accessibility was basically the subject of my question. Should have stated it a little better.
Basically i'm looking for coaches that would be possible hires, hence why I listed position coaches to fill the spots since they would not be making lateral movements. They would be stepping into a better role, and might be deserving of such a look.

CC...I'm pretty sure...90% so there is wiggle room...
But I'm pretty sure that an Asst. coach such as QB coach or LB coach would not be a step up interviewing for the OC or DC jobs. I believe most teams will give that POSITION Coach the respect to make the interview and thus give permission. But that permission would still be needed. Only if they were interviewing for the HC job would it be a step up. And I think the Asst. Head Coach job would mean even for a HC interview that would not be considered a step up....why teams give out that status of Asst. Head Coach...making it a Lateral move and needs a teams approval.
So LB or QB coach we still need to get Permission to interview...
JMHO...well 90% of it

EO...What makes everyone so sure Marty's son would want to do the same job in Cleveland, he's now doing with the Jets?
Brian was in the running for the Dolphins head coaching position last year and could very well be in the running for several head coaching jobs in the NFL and major college's this year.
Do Browns fans expect Brian Schottenheimer to give up HC offers to come to the Browns and coach under his dad?
I don't believe that is realistic thinking.

Well, quite a few people mentioned that Marty would be the temporary coach to get us back on track and then we'd hand the reins over to Brian....something along those lines. I suppose he might want to get a head coaching job on his own but maybe he'll want to coach with dad for a few years. Who knows?

Could work out if he is the 'head coach in waiting' as some other teams are doing.

One I'm more stating that it would be "COOL", Unique, whatever.
Why would he come...only to be with his Dad and help him win a SB! That is what I thought would be cool. As for leaving the Jets...Reality unless his contract is up the Jets don't let him walk.
Oh and yeah the Asst. Head Coach thingy as in after his dad wins the SB...he takes over as HC and continues JMHO

If we don't get Schottenheimer or Cowher....
I want Jim Mora... I love his spirit and his energy. He seems to relate to the players. Maybe b/c I am in Atlanta, I saw more than enough of him in the paper and news, but the players seemed to rally around him.
I would be happy if Mora was the next Cleveland Browns coach. He would still give what Romeo gives, but he would get in his players too and show some excitement when things are going good and/or bad.

I actually thought about him as well. I think he is a pretty good coach that got a raw deal in Atlanta. Could be another candidate.

Isn't Mora the named Heir Apparant in Seattle as this has been Holmgren lame duck season?
Also Mora got in trouble in Atlanta talking about coaching for Wash Univ...as in like his home (even if Joking) my point being his dream NFL job would probably be to coach Seattle. And he's got that.

yea... he did get in trouble for that.. And Seattle is his dream job. It was either Seattle in the NFL, or Washington in NCAA... I think...

Wow I thought Mora was a horrible head coach. He's a player coach interested more in being their best friend than anything else. At least that was my perception of him.

I don't want a 65 yr old coach who has seen his best days and I don't want his son who has never been a head coach in the NFL.
I just read something that Marty supposedly said..that his life has change and he wouldnt mind a job like Parcells has. He did name a person he would not mind working with though.
I want a coach that knows how to beat the teams that are once again, at the top of our division, the Steelers and Ravens. I want a coach who is experienced as a head coach who can coach the Browns for the next 5-10 yrs if he wants.

So,....between the lines--chastise me if I'm misinterpreting,...you think it would be OK for Schott to be the GM with Cowher as the coach ?? Now, that would be interesting, but I'm not sure Cowher's coming aboard w/o being the GM. And just for argument's sake, Marty didn't have that much trouble against the Steelers, comparatively.

Re: Cowher - Perhaps instead of feeling loyality for the Rooney's as so many imply, maybe just maybe he is pissed off for not being treated fairly and not getting paid what he deserved. So now he wants to come back and kick their butts and create a new legacy with the Browns.
Re: Marty - Yes he hasn't won the big game but he gets there. And a lot of coaches take a while to win the big one. Vermeil didn't win the Super Bowl until he took some time off and away from the game, Cowher had criticism for losing big games but eventually won the SB. Fisher hasn't won a SB yet but if he would leave the Titans I would certainly take him. And that is just off the top of my head. I am sure there are many more example if we started to look for them.
If we go away from the Cowher.Marty path I will bring up this guy again. Mike Munchack Oline coach Tennesee. I am not sure he is ready yet but he isn't far away.
And Eo - Going from position coach to coordinator is a step up so I do not think those guys need permission to interview.

I think we can find a random person off the street that could get a win or two against the Steelers in 5 years......ugh, I can't believe it's gone on this long. I'll almost feel embarrassed when we finally do beat them since a ton of us will be celebrating like we just won the Super Bowl (and to be celebrating a regular season win is a little weak considering our rich history).

Just clicking...
Only way I approve of Marty coming back is if he brings along his son, Brian as the OC. Then they declare Brian the "head coach in waiting." I'm frightened of a 66 year old head coach.
If this doesn't come together, and I'm doubting it will, I'm behind Clancy Pendergast.

J/C.....NO ONE here is as loyal to Coach than I am....bar none. I can say with great confidence I know him better than anyone on this board. I know first hand his discipline, his motivational skills, and his schemes. He influenced me greatly to become the coach I am.
However, as I said before, his playoff record is terrible. Many are dismissing that or laying blame on other things (though they never do that for other coaches). Coach is 5-13 in the playoffs with (IIRC off the top of my head) 3 or 4 of the wins coming in Cleveland. Too many are starved for any success that they are not looking at the overall picture. If Coach is hired, then you have to say the odds are we are 2 coaching changes from the Super Bowl. I'm sorry, but Coach is not the best solution for this team.
Again, I love Coach. I would have run through a brick wall for him if he'd asked me to...or even hinted it needed to be done. As loyal as I am to him, no way do I think it would be a good long term solution to bring him in.
As a side note, if the rumors being reported are true and there is $8 million a year on the table for a coach, I would make a run at Holmgren. Sure, he's retiring, but someoene offereing you $8 MILLION a year to not retire is a very good reason to reconsider. He has taken two teams to the Super Bowl and has won it with one of them. He is a QB genius. He would be the perfect choice for the long term success of the team.

Schottenheimer says coaching Cleveland Browns "unlikely" but wouldn't mind working with Cowher by Mary Kay Cabot Monday December 08, 2008, 4:27 PM AP file Marty Schottenheimer said today it was "unlikely" he would return to coach the Browns.BEREA -- Marty Schottenheimer said during an interview today on Sirius NFL Radio that it's unlikely he'd return to Cleveland to become head coach of the Browns again, but admitted he was intrigued about the possibility of returning in a front-office role with Bill Cowher as coach. "That would be very interesting for a couple of reasons,'' Schottenheimer said on The Sirius Blitz. "You know, Bill and I have remained very, very close friends throughout our NFL careers and it goes back to when he was a player and I was an assistant. I would be less than candid if I didn't say that that is, at the very least, intriguing. But there are so many movable parts there it would be like a Rubix cube." Schottenheimer was asked by co-host Adam Schein if he'd need complete control over personnel decisions to return to coaching. "Well, no. I don't think that that's necessary,'' he said. "I had complete control in Washington and it didn't work out very well (laughs). No, those are not issues that are critical in my mind. As a head coach I think you have to be responsible and have control at least of the 53-man roster. To be responsible for the draft, in my opinion, I don't think that's the kind of situation, it's too hard to do what you have to do, let alone be involved making all the final decisions on the draft because, as a head coach in the National Football League, to do that job well (running the draft) I think you've got to be out on the road doing it all the time and, duh, if you're out there, how are you going to get ready to coach your football team? It's just like the thing I enjoy most about working with you guys (at SIRIUS) are the people. The people are good people and that's the only thing that is important to me, is people." Asked specifically by a caller if he'd consider becoming Browns head coach again, he said, "I don't ever say 'never' if I don't have to but I don't see it (going back to coach the Cleveland Browns) as being likely. "I don't see that as being likely at all. I really don't. I've made a major change in my life and, again, the only thing I always say, as a caveat, I don't ever make a decision if I don't have to and thus I haven't made one. First of all, nobody has presented me with an overture and, secondly, I've kind of aligned myself and my life kind of where it is and if they want to pay me $30 million a year I'll have to talk about it (laughs). But actually you couldn't even take the $30 million because we need it for the government so we can get out of this financial crisis we're in. I have not spoken to anybody from there and the likelihood is, if indeed I were to, I don't see it [as being] likely." Schottenheimer said his firing by the Chargers after a 14-2 season would have no bearing on his decision whether or not to return. "That was an anomaly,'' he said. "That was an aberration. That was particular to the organization. I don't sit here today saying, 'Boy, I really got a bad deal.' I swear I don't ever stop and think about it in that context. It is what it is, it was what it was and it happens. I'm a football junkie. There's no doubt about that. I am a football junkie. I sit down, as I said, in the morning and have breakfast and get ready for the games and I'm up 'til the final [whistle]. I enjoy it. But that doesn't put me necessarily in a situation where I want to stand there and have every moment that I'm there, making decisions and all. The key for me is people, as you well know. That is the most important thing in the world to me. My issues in San Diego were because of the people in the front office that I could not interact with." http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2008/12/schottenheimer_says_coaching_c.html

ooorah...What I posted was from Marty's viewpoint, according to the article I read. The way I took it, Marty was presenting a hypothetical situation with him assuming a Parcells type of role, possibly in a situation that would allow him to work with a coach he was already familiar with, such as Bill Cowher.
I'm not crazy about Marty, in any capacity, be it HC, GM or a Parcells' type job, whatever that is. My opinion of Marty is he's 65 yrs old and his best years are behind him. It sounds like he accepts retirement and is not looking back.
If the Browns are going to catch up and pass the Ravens and Steelers, it's going to take someone who can out work, out coach and out smart the other teams in the division.

Mac, Marty was 14-2 just 2 years ago. The game hasn't changed that much in 2 years. I still think Marty could take what we have, plus our #1 Pick in 09 and turn this team around. It wouldn't shock me to see us post 9-10 wins next year with Marty AND make the playoffs.
Most will say those that want Marty are living in the past. I for one want Marty back because he is the ##1 or #2 candidate in my opinion. I don't want a 1st year Head Coach. I want a proven winner. If Cowher doesn't come, then Marty should be our guy.

Well, let's look at next years schedule:
Pitts X2 Cincy X2 Balt X2 Oakland Raiders Denver Broncos San Diego Chargers Kansas City Chiefs Green Bay Packers Chicago Bears Minnesota Vikings Detroit Lions AFC South (3rd place - currently Houston) AFC East (3rd place - currently NE)
I know LOTS of things can change and teams rise and fall faster in the NFL than any other league....but the NFC North doesn't impress me much and the AFC West is surely no NFC East. We may have an "easier" schedule in 2009.

Yeah we don't want Marty because in the BIG picture he has not done well in something called the playoffs. What are these playoffs you speak of? Admittedly I can't see the big picture. The picture I'm getting now is a little hazy cuz I threw my snacks at the TV on sunday, but I'm pretty sure that behind the gaucamole and french onion dip is some bad bad football. We are the Washington Generals of the NFL for cripes sake. We haven't scored a TD since Rin Tin Tin was a pup and... on and on it goes where it stops nobody knows. Considering we're about to fire our third coach with still no noticeable improvement from 1999 , two coaches away sounds like the promised land to me. Heck a coach with 18 playoff appearances has to be a step up from the 3 stooges extravaganza we've had to endure for the last 10 years.

And his comments about coming back or not...........if anyone takes anything anyone says at face value in this league, they are only fooling themselves.

We are quietly tossing Marty's name out thier to drive Cowler price tag down and Marty is saying he dosent have to have the job to push is price tag up incase Cowler dosent want the job, it's all mind game of $$$$ I / We dont have any control over who's hired, so all we can really do is pray we get the right guy.

Would he be "allowed" to hire his son?
For Hrad Coach? Why not? The name of the game in the NFL is winning. The only problem would be in the "appearance" with regards to the NFL's minority hiring policy. Once Marty's kid's name is out there, who would want to interview?
Could he bring his son in as an assistant then ..... as others have considered a possibility?
Probably ...... except for the fact that his son is under contract elsewhere.
NFL rules state that an assistant is an assistant ..... whether a position coach or a coordinator. A team may deny a position coach a chnce to interview for a coordinator spot elsewhere if they wish.

I wonder how that pairing would work out.. Marty in the FO and Cowher on the field coaching. Clearly, those two know how to work together. No question about that.
Marty's right, that is an intriguing possibility.

Since RAC is still on board , Marty and Cowher have respect for that situation..Marty knows all too well how it feels to be fired and have new opening mentioned while you're still at the helm.

I have little doubt that RAC has been sat down and told that he's gone.. It's just hushed until the end of the season IMO..
The question I have is does Savage know his fate yet?

I know you're in business for yourself Damon, but I do not believe that was always the case from reading the board.
Now maybe this works different in varying venues. But in my profession ( construction ), I was the "axe man". If someone within my division was going to be terminated, it was my job to deliver that message. In both a smaller company and later at a larger corperation.
NEVER and I mean NEVER did you give ANYONE "advanced notice" they were being terminated. And there are a multitude of reasons for that if you would really like to know. Including but not exclusive to production, motivation and chaos.
If a guy knows he's leaving in advance, why should he be concerned about production or be motivated? A disgruntled or PO'd employee in the midst of the corperation can cause chaos and disorder which only increases the delimna you faced when having to decide to terminate said employee in the first place.
IMO- RAC having this "advanced notice" was speculation on your part.
But from my experience, if you wish to get the most out of an employee on any level, telling him he won't have a job in a month only serves to be counterproductive to the company or corperation who employs him.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

And when he was 63 he took a team to a 14-2 record.
I'm perfectly fine with Schott coming back on a 2-3 year deal.
I'm not. I understand the logical progression but this retread stuff is starting to drive me crazy. We fired our original coach and replaced him with a college coach. He failed, so we replaced him with a coordinator. He failed, so now all that's left to try and fail at is a retread. Does that mean that we HAVE to get someone with experience? Hardly.
If we bring Marty in for 2-3 years, what happens if, just as we start to become competitive again, he decides he doesn't feel the fire anymore and quits? Suddenly, we're looking to bring in another guy with a different system and take a few steps back. With the older retreads, it's very difficult to get continuity because their status is up in the air. Everyone wants to get the fire and change in philosophy and attitude that these older coaches have proven they are capable of, but who's to say we can't get that with someone younger and less experienced? It's worked for all teams that tried it this year.
Everyone wants for us to have our own Cowher... a guy who will coach for over a decade, ingrain his philosophy, make the playoffs over every year and eventually lead us to the promised land. The thing most people are missing is that to get your own Cowher in that sense (just like the Steelers did when they got Cowher himself), you want anything but a retread. Retreads don't coach forever like new coaches do.
To me, it's not clinging to anyone with success as though the only ones who have it anymore are the ones who had it in the past, it's about finding the RIGHT coordinator/assistant to bring in. Butch was power hungry and wrecked the front office. Romeo is likeable but not a leader. Find a leader. Find someone the players will respect and not only want to play for, but actually DO play for. Find someone with passion for the job who is smart enough to make the right calls.
Do your homework and you won't need to bring in a retread, which is the easy way out in all of this.
We're... we're good?

Sat down and told that by whom? Internet fans?
Actually, I was think that Lerner told him... Who knows if I'm correct.. It's just an opinion.. It's hard to work down the hall from the boss everyday, knowing things are going all wrong and not be told something. Tension in that building has to be monumental,, That's why it's just my opinion that he's been told.

My opinion of Marty is he's 65 yrs old and his best years are behind him.
Parcells was 66 when he was hired by the Dolphins and took them from laughing stock to playoff contender in 2 years... and not to be rude, but Marty looks to be in a heck of a lot better shape than Parcells physically.
Anybody on here that would have turned down Parcells coming to Cleveland last year?

No he hasn't been told Daman..and I don't need to go into the whys ..it hasn't happened..I'll take Lerners word that he'll wait till the season IS OVER and do his assessment..there's nothing gained by telling Rac he's a goner..but ya think Rac is stupid and doesn't know whats up?

Thanks for the read...I do take Marty at his word.
The likelihood of him being offered our coaching spot is slim.
I do fear Cowher would push hard for him to be the GM if he is HC...I surely would prefer Savage!
Clay57...Cowher and Marty communicate often...I doubt we would be utilizing Marty to better the negotiations for Cowher - they talk to each other.
If Cowher comes - there are no negotiations. He would be in the driver seat as we are going to him...not the other way around.
So at this point I think the likelihood of Marty being our GM in the future is greater than being the HC.
