Okay, the title of the thread was just to sort of "bait you in".
I've seen where people have sat and discussed who may be available in the FA market. But really? What makes you think so?
To be honest, I'm getting a little tired of seeing NOTHING BUT negative posts. I know we're all fuming. I know we're all tired of watching our team get beat up and losing. And I really think having a positive thread looking forward and doing a little prongnosticating may be a refreshing change of pace.
We all know that each team in the NFL has two options to try to retain a potential FA. One is the frachise tag. The other is something that I'm not that well versed at called the RFA tag. (restricted free agent)
I know the draft forum will not open up until after the SB like tradition has always been with Dawg Talk/Dawg Talkers. But think about it folks, the FA signing period comes before the draft. And from the history of Savage here, the FA signings will directly impact the draft. So as of right now, we have no idea of who Phil will get in the FA market. Which in turn leaves us NO CLUE of which direction we will go in the draft. So sitting here trying to speculate about the draft is a virtual impossibility until the FA signing period is over.
So the Boldin preface has no real credability. We can all feel pretty comfortable knowing that if all else fails, Zona will put the franchise tag on Boldin.
So here's what I'm proposing as a "change of pace" type thread. ( at least something different than negativity )
Let's collectively break down each team. See how many players (and who they are) from each NFL team are on the last year of their contracts.
ie......Zona will most certinly tag Boldin IMO, but if they tag him, who might Zona lose? Zona may have 4-7 players on the last year of their conract. Let's use six as an example. If so, they can franchise tag one, RFA one. Which would leave four that may hit the FA market.
And to further this, where are these teams in terms of cap space going into next year? Using Boldin s an example, maybe Zona is in such poor cap space, that maybe they could simply not afford to meet Boldins demands? ( Fitz does eat up a lot of cap space ) While I doubt that, the cap space of each NFL team gives us a good indicator of what teams may be in the market to compete with us in the FA market.
So that's my proposal here. Break down each NFL team. What players they have that are on the last year of their contracts. Who we feel each team will "tag" and who that leaves as FA's to choose from. And having those teams cap room will also enter into the equasion who they me FORCED to cut loose, even though they'd rather not.
Is that a lot of homework? Oh hell yes it is! But it may give us something positive to talk about, instead of just ranting about the state our team is right now.
If it sounds like an interesting proposal? Let's have at it! If not, let this thread die out and become a part of the archives.

Seen a lot of drops from Boldin - Is he of the same cloth as BE???
Roy Williams I would have loved but the Cowboys got him.
But lets face it any WR would come at a high cost via trade or FA that is a STUD!
Best get one or more through the draft. We are heading in a 3 year draft era of some absolute studs coming up the ranks and I don't see any let up as so many college teams have gone to a spread offense and utilize the passing game like no college eras before.
It seems like most Top 20 schools have incredible WRs...several who are Freshman that are outstanding.
Its a position I think we can get into the draft. And not half assed the way we went and got Wilson - I think we were tired and just grabbed a high skilled guy on our board. We don't have to go for the HRs...kids who were very good at Jr. or Soph. but had an injury or change at QB and have them drop in the draft...we can get a good WR out there if we just search for one as a priority. Even in the 2nd day of the draft.

Dang, I wonder what Arizona is going to do with Kurt Warner. They can't let him walk for nothing and if they sign him longterm, what does that mean for USC-boy? Tough decision for the Cards.

Yeah, like I said, Boldin was the bait to get people to open the thread. That goes for you too Tabber. And it was great that captal came up with that list. That would have really helped break things down the way I would have liked to. But I guess it's outdated.

Is Warner going to retire at the end of the year, b/c of the Boldin injury? If not... the answer is simple. Sign Warner AGAIN, for like a 3 year contract. Leinart is fine on the bench.

Well the only FA WR I would pursue on that list is Austin of the Cowboys...I think he has some skills not seen yet. My son is a Cowboy fan so I get to see them a lot.
A couple from the Saints...but I think we are talking about overpayment on some...including TO.
But for me it would be a relatively Unknown like Austin who needs that Chance to show his skills that is what I would like to see us go for in the FA market - cause any considered a STUD would be WAAAYYYYY Over paid.
Draft...I said it before and I'll say it again. Anyone who has Excellent Hands, Runs good routes and is willing to Block...draft them...even if they have 4.6 speed.

Well Tabber, sometimes, even though I try my best, my message is not NEARLY clear enough. And I guess this is a prime example. And it looks like the Boldin Refrance was my downfall in this case. I did not intend on focusing on the WR position. My intension was to break each NFL team down into the players whose contract ends this season. Then, try to guesstimate which of those players each team will most likely "tag" with the franchise tag or the RFA tag. Then we would be left with a list of likely players that may hit the FA market. ie.......A team may have a GREAT LB that it would really LOVE to tag. BUT, if they have to tag their LT and a RB (or other position), and aren't in the cap situation, that LBer may hit the FA market anyway. That's why I believe you need the cap info and a list of all players broken down team by team whose contract will be up at seasons end to try to formulate that. And as a result, we can look at LBer's, CB's, S and yes, WR's too. I didn't intend on focusing on the WR position. But more where we might be able to fill positions of need through the FA market. But without seeing whose contracts expire at seasons end broke down team by team, and each teams cap space, it's very hard to gauge who might or who might not be out there in the FA market IMO

Not really. Matt Leiny out and look at the offense thrive under Warner. I wouldn't call resigning Warner as a tough decision. Just because you draft a guy high doesn't mean you have to go with him. More often than not, 1st round QB draft picks don't pan out in the long run.

Boldin is still under contract to the Cards, so no need to tag or worry about him. He's going to be traded or be unhappy being a Cardinal.

That list is way off it needs to be updated, don't use this list as your measuring stick for players available because people such as Chris Gamble have already signed extensions.

I have a few things I'd like to see done..
Pick a New Head Coach who hopefully will bring in a new DC.. I'm still not sure if it's Chud or RAC that is holding up the progress of the Offense. Just not sure. But it's it's Chud, then he's got to go also.
I'd like to see a top flight receiver added and I'd like to see someone get inside Braylons Head and figure out what the hell is going on in there. The kid had the ability,, I can't figure out what the heck happened to him this year..
We are deep at TE and I fear that KW2 is too much of a distraction, I wouldn't mind seeing him go away in a trade. Perhaps we can get something for him around draft time.
We need new LB's across the board with the exception of DQ and this young kid, Hall.. Not saying Hall is all that and a bag of chips, but with limited playing time this year, he's done pretty well.. I wonder whatelse he has to offer up.
I want the new regime to focus on LB's in the draft... Don't care if we are going 4-3 or 3-4. Find the right guys.
*(just a question, if we switch to a 4-3, does anyone think that wimbly could man one outside spot, Hall the other and DQ in the middle, does anyone think that might work)
WE'll need to find a replacement for Jones cause I don't think we'll resign him. Adams needs resigned I think...
I'm ok with our CB's as long as we get D. Holly back in good health.. Maybe add one more.
No need to add to Dline., They just need to remain healthy.
And for gods sake, someone pick a QB and STICK WITH HIM.
Find us a running back other than Jamal Lewis.. I love his attitude, but I'm getting the feeling that he's done.. either that or we have a bigger problem on the Oline than I think.
A big dose of Harrison would be nice assuming he's healthy (the announcers said that he banged up his ribs yesterday,, haven't heard anything else about it however)
But we need another big back to go with him,, How about that Brandon Jacobs kid from the Giants. At 6-4, 264 lbs and only 26 years old, he could be a perfect fit. Now throw a guy like Harrison in there and teams will wonder what hit them.
I love our FB's.. Ali and Vickers have skills and I don't think a change is needed there.
RT is a hole.. Hopefully Tucker returns but even if he does, he's getting a little long in the tooth.. we have to find a guy that can take over for him.. I'm afraid Shaffer isn't it. Not if we want to keep whatever QB we use alive that is.
Speaking of the Oline, Depth is weak..
All in all, we have the basic foundation for a good team.. not like when RAC and Savage got here... (man, did we suck or what)
Man, I'm trying to stay positive. After yestersdays game and my current hangover caused by my use of booze to forget yesterdays game,, It's difficult to find the positive in any of this..
But it's there,, I just know it is.. I'm going to click my heels together three times and I'll be wisked off to football nirvana!

I'm so with you on Winslow. He just is not an AFC North TE...
Question is, what is his value? Is there a way to get a first day pick for him? I would be more than content with round 3, I just don't know how possible it is...

I've never really been good at guessing the worth of a player on the open market... But if we put out the feelers, we'll get an idea pretty quick.
To be honest, if we can't get a 1st day pick, then I'd keep him.. But as far as a new contract,, no, I don't think so.

Maybe I misunderstood what dawgs were doing...but I figured people were supposed to do individual teams...
Hence...the Carolina Panthers
WR Dominique Thompson TE Jeff King PK John Kasay OT Frank Omiyale DL Julius Peppers LB James Anderson LB Jason Kyle CB Chris Gamble
The Blue Chips
Two names obviously stand out for the Panthers…. CB Chris Gamble and DE Julius Peppers.
Chris Gamble has steadily progressed since being a first round pick in 2003. He’s a corner with good size and plays heady football. Ideally, he’d be a great FA pick up for a secondary starved Browns. Unfortunately however, Gamble was recently resigned to a long term and very LARGE contract by the panthers (6yr, 54 million).
So we’re out of luck there right? Well, perhaps not.
There’s already noise that with Gamble, Ken Lucas and Richard Marshall in the fold; the Panthers have 3 starting quality CBs. With Lucas having a very high cap number this year and hitting the ripe ol’ age of 30, there’s some speculation he may be cut loose or extended as trade bait.
Julius Peppers looks to be a no-brainer as either a franchise tag or being locked up long term before the offseason. Back into form with 11 sacks in 12 games, he’s a dominant pass rusher. Even if he were to become available, he’s too light in the pants to play DE for us anyways in our 3-4 alignment.
The Rest
OT Frank Omiyale got one start this year but all scouting reports on the guy scream left tackle and not the brute that we need on our right side to perhaps replace Shaff.
We need better receiving options but Dominque Thompson doesn’t look like he’s still on the roster….so I doubt if he’s it.
Neither of the LBs look like solutions for us. We’ve got 2 solid TEs already so King, although decent, isn’t needed. And I don’t think anyone is looking to jettison Dawson with the year he’s had.
All in all
I doubt if the Panthers have anything to offer us FA wise. If Lucas could be had, I’d grab at him in exchange for a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Not nitpicking, but as I understand it the Panthers would take a huge hit to release Lucas, so they are probably just going to let Richard Marshall walk. He's a talented player, no doubt, but he's going to want huge money. Think similar scenario to Rod Hood a few years ago, but with way more cash involved.

Good info BigC... the sources on the net I had found seemed to lean more toward Lucas getting walking papers. But if there's a huge cap hit there, maybe you're right... unless they could trade him, as then the prorated signing bonus gets transferred to the new team, correct?
BUT if you're right and Marshall gets released, all the better...younger player, has already been groomed as a nickelback and ready to make the leap to starter.
Would likely be better for us long term.

Not a problem.
He's started in the past (Marshall). In fact it looked like he was more in their long term plans until this year when Gamble started playing better. Marshall's not some Ricky Manning, Jr. knockoff...he can play.
Marshall probably is hitting the FA market unless they tag him. They just can't afford him, especially considering how badly they want to resign Peppers.

"*(just a question, if we switch to a 4-3, does anyone think that wimbly could man one outside spot, Hall the other and DQ in the middle, does anyone think that might work)
No, No and No.. No#1...Wimbley would be too light, if he was an extraordinary pass rusher I say we keep him in as a pass rush specialist on passing downs...but right now I'd have to say no to even that.
No#2...Hall actually that could become a Maybe...BUTT he would have to gain weight but he has the frame to do so and come in somewhere 270-280.
No#3...DQ, if there is one part of the game DQ does struggle with Interior OLmen and I'm not quite sure if he has ideal sideline to sideline speed. I thought he would make an ideal Will LB (but my Yang would differ ) who tend to be a little less in size and have good coverage skills which DQ is developing.
Pittdawg...lol still too many pictures I see...lol I'll get it started.
I could see Warner, QB Cards Bart Scott, LB Ravens Colombo, RT Dallas Garrard, QB Jags Brandon Jacobs, RB Giants Steven Jackson, RB RAMS...Can he??? I think he signed. as well as probably others listed.
But if I had to make a short list of Maybe's to be Tagged...that would be it.
I'd say Whosyourmama but Brown is so cheap no way he pays avg of top 5.
Ray Lewis...doubt he'd be tagged.

Man u can make it difficult... It's way 2 hard to figure cap right now...And even harder to figure who will Tag who... Lotsa teams have megabucks with this cap thing the way it is... Dansby I believe has a clause to where he CANNOT be Franchised a 2nd year in a row,...To me this goes against the CBA which says one player CAN BE Tagged twice in a row...Oh well...Will Zona scoff at Dansby bucks like they did Pace??? Dansby may become available and will be the upper cream... You hit the nail EXACTLY on the head in what I was looking for Canada! It's quite a daunting task, no doubt. But IMO, it beats the hell out of sitting around complaining in thread after thread. And it would make for a great thread and quite a mind excercise in wading through the possibilities IMO. Thanks Canada! And if it catches on, maybe we can begin to look forward a little bit. I can't see how 15 threads complaining about everything can have any positive effect. Accept to vent. JMHO

Why not? The only thing else we have to do is sit around and bit.........rant about how bad things are!

I won't argue either of those points. But on the "who's gonna tag who"? In some cases it might not be that tough.
ie..... We KNOW that QB's, LT's, and top rated CB's are VERY expencive in the FA market. And "stellar" quality on DL and LBer's won't be let go unless it's a must.
So it gives us some strong indicators IMO

Actually, I'd like to see us have a LEGITIMATE #1 WR. Best as I can tell, we don't even have that yet! Boldin as a #2? Nah.

DnD, I know this thread would be pure speculation and conjecture. Nothing more. And to actually accomplish and wade through all of that information would be a daunting task.
But realisticly speaking, what else do we have to look forward to right now? The draft forum doesn't open until after the SB. There will be no playoffs or SB for us.
So IMO, we're left with one of two choices. Realisticly we can try to figure out who might be available to us in the FA market ( which usually has a direct impact on the draft ), or we can sit here and keep piling on and complaining about everything.
And isn't there enough of that going on already?
And let me ask you ( as the floodgates open for a highjack ), is this any more speculative than some of the accusations and blame being dealt out on this board now?

Seen a lot of drops from Boldin - Is he of the same cloth as BE???
Um Boldin is a sure handed WR and is one of the top pass-catching WRs in the game. He may have a had a bad game this season (thanksgiving) that was on national tv but it is uncharacteristic of him. Where did you get your information from that makes you think he is of the same cloth as Edwards? The truth is he is one of the best catching WRs in the game. I would love to have Boldin here...of course it'll never happen.
So FYI Boldin is an absolute stud and he's tough as nails making great catches all the time. I wonder sometimes where some of you get your information from.

Eo, I think Daman (and correct me if I'm wrong) meant to say have Hall and Wimbley at both of the outside linebacker spots in the 4-3.

That's exactly what I meant,,,, not sure why EO didn't catch that..
So, it would look like this: Hall, DQ, Wimbley
I think eo's take that Wimbley is too small makes little sense in this case...

Well I apologize for making my own opinion without reading somebody else stating it.
I think I've seen about 3 games...or at least a good portion of their game over the last 8 weeks or so. I know he had an Injury Boldin and came back. Well all these games I've watch have been after his injury.
I don't go to any Elias stat place...nor do I search articles on Boldin. Boldin has dropped a lot of passes from what I have seen and all is after the injury. In this way I'm not biased on his previous reputation - just he has dropped a lot which stood out.
I also think a lot of BE's problems stemmed from his injury and then coming back in Game 1 without much preparation and then the season snow balled.
Even though BE had a reputation of the Bad with the Good prior to this season. Frankly I don't know Boldin's reputation nor will let it influence me. But I think you might be looking at him with the eyes of a predetermined opinion and not from the present. Does BE go back to form? Does Boldin? That is what I'm saying...it has been more than one game recently.

I form my opinions by watching football. I have the NFL package and I've enjoyed watching Arizona for the past few years. My opinion is not predetermined but based off of fact. I don't go shooting off opinions about players I know nothing about. I think in doing so I would come across as a someone that creates false statements to support my opinion. Boldin has had 1 bad game where he had some drops and that was on Thanksgiving. He also got hit hard early on which could be why he had trouble focussing from that point on. His present (this year) has him playing at the highest level for any WR.

Didn't he have a pretty big injury this year???
And in your opinion has he been the same WR upon his return.
I know I have seen more than one game recently...and yes I have the Ticket as well.
So its not National TV games or none at all. They usually play at 4 - those time slots that don't involve the Browns...I take one game as my primary and then surf to one or two others during TO's and things of that nature. At 4 there aren't many games to choose from - so I've seen a bit of Zona not cause I like them or anything but they've had some interesting games. Maybe it was games against better defenses that I watched???? All I know is the impression I got is that he's dropped passes recently and more than one game.
Maybe not as prevalent as I took from what I saw...but my thought process is bad Injury...now drops? is this a trend and something he'll have to get over. The drops are so mental more than simply...he has hands.
And it can happen over night almost. That is all I'm suggesting and referring to in a BE comparison. What BE is doing now is just over and beyond drops and to me it started with his injury and built up from there.
Good for you...watching and evaluating better than looking up stats.
"His present (this year) has him playing at the highest level for any WR."
Sorry I don't quite understand what you're trying to say here...you saying he's the best in the NFL??? I know he's been great in the RedZone cause he has a TE body and WR moves to get position on Defenders.
My question to you is...cause I think you've watched him more than I.
There was an Injury? Right, my memory on that isn't wrong?
Since he came back is he dropping more passes???
Or did I just see the exceptions to the rule regarding him?

He got a concussion late in the game against the Jets on a cheap helmet to helmet shot (look it up on utube..it was nasty) and was out 2 games afterwards. He came back and scored 5 tds in the next three games however. Yes I believe he is one of the best WRs in the game. His great hands, toughness, route running and ability to make great catches in tight coverage due to his size gives him the total package.
His drops against the Eagles I personally believe was from an early hit in the game that might have rattled him. Prior to the game he caught 24 combined balls in the previous two games. When he plays 16 games he is pretty much a 100 catch player.

Yes.
Boldin making big impact in Arizona
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—With eight plates in his face and wiring in his jaw, Anquan Boldin could have eased back into his job as Arizona’s do-it-all receiver.
Not a chance. Boldin said he’s feeling no lingering effects from one of the NFL season’s most vicious hits.
“I mean, I’m good,” Boldin said after practice on Wednesday.
If you don’t believe him, check the statistics. They’re better than good.
Boldin leads the NFL with 10 receiving touchdowns, the last two coming in the Cardinals’ 29-24 victory over San Francisco on Monday night. Boldin has a touchdown catch in six straight games, most in the franchise’s 89-year history, and he’ll try to make it seven in a row when the NFC West-leading Cardinals visit Seattle on Sunday.
In any other year, those numbers wouldn’t raise an eyebrow, given that Boldin is a two-time Pro Bowl selection.
But Boldin missed three weeks with a fractured sinus and other facial injuries following a fierce hit by the New York Jets’ Eric Smith on Sept. 28—a hit that cost Smith a $50,000 fine, a one-game suspension and the game check that went with it (about $28,000).
Boldin underwent surgery, with doctors inserting eight plates to repair his face and wiring to align his bite.
“I’m still in awe of what he does on a weekly basis, and what he’s done since he’s come back from that injury,” quarterback Kurt Warner said. “Just a special individual.”
Boldin missed games against Buffalo and Dallas—both home wins—and had a bye week off before returning at Carolina on Oct. 26.
In the three weeks since he came back, Boldin has 22 catches for 240 yards and five scores.
Boldin’s toughness is legendary among teammates. But he sees nothing unusual about returning to form so quickly.
“If I was having any lingering effects from the hit, I wouldn’t have been back on the field,” Boldin said. “I didn’t want to come back until I knew I was ready to play football, and play the way that I’m used to playing.”
Boldin’s return has overshadowed his unresolved contract situation. An angry Boldin showed up at training camp in Flagstaff and lashed out at the club for failing to follow through on what he said was a promise for a new deal. A few days later, Boldin said he’d like to be traded.
Boldin is in the second year of the four-year, $22.75 million extension he signed after the 2005 season that keeps him under contract through 2010. He’s making an average of $4 million a year.
At the time, Boldin vowed that his unhappiness with his contract wouldn’t affect his play.
“It’s a tough situation, especially when you come into a working environment,” Boldin said then. “But my job is to stay professional. I’m going to do what I’m supposed to do.”
He’s doing more than that. The Cardinals are tinkering with new ways to exploit the 6-foot-1, 217-pound Boldin, known for dishing out as much punishment as he takes.
Against San Francisco, Boldin twice ran the ball after taking direct snaps, and on another play he ran on an option pitch from Warner. Boldin has carried six times for 57 yards this year.
“It’s just something that defenses have to prepare for, something extra,” Boldin said. “I think we give a variety of different looks to defenses already, as it is, but when you put something like that in, it just gives them something else to worry about.”
A former high school quarterback, Boldin is also a threat to throw, although opposing defenses aren’t likely to worry much about that. Boldin has thrown two passes—an incompletion and an interception—in his six-year NFL career.
Whisenhunt won’t tip his hand about other ways to deploy Boldin. But as the Cardinals run away from the NFC West—they lead the woeful division by four games—it’s likely that they’re just scratching the surface of Boldin’s versatility.
“Hopefully, it’s just the beginning,” Whisenhunt said. “Like we’ve said all along, we’re trying to put players in positions where we feel it gives us a good chance to win.”

Yes. And I would HIGHLY doubt that if you looked, you would find much if anything to dispute that. Even dropped passes. Let me rephrase, ESPECIALY dropped passes!

But you are right about that "one game". He had three dropped passes and two fumbles. Not perfect. But is anybody?
Eight plates in his face with his jaw wired shut? Only missed three games?
That's the kind of FIRE we need to see here IMO!

after reading that article i don't see how ariz could possibly let boldin go. he's just too good. . hopefully that means they won't be able to sign one or two of the other guys we want.

Pit...and MDbites...guess I was wrong about the Boldin thing with drops.
Must of been the one game that took over that thought process...My Bad on being incorrect.
Two things. 1. the article stated he's signed till 2010...so how did he get on this FA list and discussion anyways? 2. I hope the ONE game process won't open a can of worms. MDBites, you mentioned he got hit earlier in the game and then the drops came. Will teams see that as a possible Game Plan...Hit him in the mouth early and shake him up. The injury has to have a mental effect. Hopefully I wasn't Prophetic in my thought process.
Well thanks for setting me straight on that....rather be wrong and corrected than ignorant

Not accurate. Many players on there have signed extensions.
And FTR Boldin is a Free Agent NEXT year.
trade BE for Boldin.
I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Of course, it takes two to tangle though, and why would 'zona trade a stud WR under a very reasonable contract through 2010 for a much worse player with a higher salary and that isn't signed as long?
Sometimes I wonder...
