I guess that leaves Cowher out. According to all reports, he wants total control,,,

Good. Total control is a disaster waiting to happen. I'm of the belief that you can't both coach and make personnel decisions without neglecting something. There's a reason the jobs are separated in the first place.

I still think Bernie should head up the search committee.
And I wonder what he could do as our OC...
As Eo stated in another thread...the coach that comes in cannot be given the role of Grand Pubar. We need to have a coach AND a GM. Not one in the same. (look how much better bill belleyache is in N.E.)
Belichick has final say in NE.
Anyway...Bernie doesn't wanna coach due to the time commitment involved, but he'd be open to a consulting role. He'd be the PERFECT guy to run the coach/GM search.
Everything he touches in business turns to gold, and look what he did with the Gladiators in just ONE offseason. 2-14 to the conference championship game. AFL is different from NFL, but he knows bright football people when he sees them.

You will get no argument from me.. I agree.. coaching is a full time job,, Scouting is another one.. it's not a one man job.

You still have scouts. Belicheck has a guy who brings him the information....a guy he listens to.
The head coach should be able to pick anybody he wants, and he clearly should be able to determine the final roster.
Phil needs to check his ego is my opinion.

In an article that quotes Marty Schottenhiemer, he makes the claim that he wouldn't want the dual role. I beleive he said he tried it in Washington and it didn't work so well. (then he supposedly laughed)
I would say that if anyone knows the perils of such a set up, it would be someone like Marty..
Just saying..

1. Phil has shown that he can and wants to work in a symbiotic relationship with the HC. 2. RAC has attended and contributed as a HC in every War Room that we have had. 3. Possibly Cowher would be a little more strong in his DRAFT DAY WAR ROOM ROLE...but you are already condemning Savage as not being willing to share some of that power.
Actually...Vettedawg and Ammo.
What I have said the only way I would cherish having Cowher here is if Savage remains. Cause I would like a "STRONG" HC and for him to have his Pioli...which was the direct image and copy we have always stated of wanting to have.
Savage would be King in his domain and Cowher in his...and in so many ways Cowher would take over a lot of the duties that Savage seems to detest. Savage has been fighting with Upper management for years regarding his penchant to Scouting and not being in Berea. Well this could actually be the perfect MARRIAGE and not the clash of "EGO's" as some would predict.

I remember Lerner saying in a press conference the exact same thing at the end of the year after Davis left. He looks to other good franchises and see's a Coach AND a GM. He felt he believed it was the right way to spread up the load and make each part the most efficient. I doubt he's changed his mind.....

Last year Daniel Snyder wanted Cowher really bad. The rumor floating around is that Snyder is not happy with Zorn. If the Skins miss the playoffs, look for Snyder to be in the Cowher sweepstakes. JMO, but Marty looks more viable than Cowher if Snyder gets involved.

Snyder goes through coaches like I go through socks. I have to think that Cowher wouldn't want that kind of "someone looking over his shoulder" environment. Hell, he could go to Oakland for that.

Hehe........As rich as Snyder is, I'm not sure even he'd be willing to give Cowher a five-year, $40 million dollar deal, then fire him after one season and pay the whole thing
Of course who knows what goes on between the ears of Snyder. That man is an idiot as an NFL owner, so far as what happens on the field.
On a side note, some Browns fans should be careful what they wish for in an owner. They bash Lerner for letting the football people take care of the football stuff while keeping his distance from the camera's, but when owners seek the cameras and the control, they almost always screw up.
Example: Jerry Jones: "I didn't actually mean to question Marion Barber's toughness"

I would expect someone like Cowher to want an owner like Lerner, who stands back and lets the people he hired, to do the jobs he hired them for.
An owner who is not cheap, like, say, those guys in Pittsburgh...
I doubt that Bill Cowher would work for an owner like Dan Snyder or Jones, for any amount of money. Someone who would be looking over their shoulder and questioning everything they do.
For all the crap Lerner takes from the fans and media, for his style...from a HC's point of view, Lerner would probably be more desirable than most of the owners in the NFL.

That's 100% correct.
Lerner is rich, Lerner isn't cheap, Lerner is patient, Lerner isn't meddling.
Now having said that, if the ONLY guy in the NFL that's willing to pay me $8 million and let me have total control over everything is Snyder, then I'd seriously have to consider that gig.

FLOYD REESE LOBBIES FOR BROWNS JOB Posted by Michael David Smith on December 11, 2008, 11:41 a.m. Former Titans General Manager Floyd Reese, who campaigned for a job in Detroit shortly after the Lions fired Matt Millen, is now turning his attention to Cleveland.
Reese, now an ESPN analyst, told the Akron Beacon Journal that if Browns General Manager Phil Savage is fired after the season, he’d be interested in getting the job.
”When I look at organizations and potential jobs, you always look at do they have what it takes to win. That’s an owner willing to invest, the facility, the stadium, the fan base,” Reese said. ”Cleveland’s got all of that.”
Those are very similar to the comments Reese made when lobbying for the Lions job — he also said Detroit had a good owner, a good facility, etc. And Reese will probably make similarly complimentary comments about any other NFL franchise where he thinks he might find employment.

Former Titans official in mix Ex-GM Floyd Reese would welcome call from Browns owner
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sports writer
Published on Thursday, Dec 11, 2008
While recent reports have characterized the return to the Browns of Bill Cowher and Marty Schottenheimer as unlikely, former Tennessee Titans General Manager Floyd Reese would openly welcome a call from Browns owner Randy Lerner.
In a telephone interview Wednesday, Reese said ''you'd have to'' consider the Browns if Lerner decides to fire General Manager Phil Savage or insist that Savage accept a reduced role. Presumably, coach Romeo Crennel would be the first to go.
Currently an NFL analyst for ESPN, Reese has been out of the league since stepping down from his Titans post in January 2007. Reese has more than 30 years of NFL experience, including 13 as the Titans' GM.
''When I look at organizations and potential jobs, you always look at do they have what it takes to win. That's an owner willing to invest, the facility, the stadium, the fan base,'' Reese said. ''Cleveland's got all of that.
''Have they won the way they wanted to since their rebirth? No, they haven't. Is that something that can be fixed? All you've got to do is look at the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins to say, 'Yeah, it can be fixed.' ''
After finishing 10-6 and one game shy of the playoffs in 2007, the Browns are 4-9 going into the game Monday night against the Eagles (7-5-1) in Philadelphia. Since the franchise returned in 1999, the Browns are 54-103 with one playoff appearance (in 2002).
Earlier this year, Reese expressed interest in the Detroit Lions' job after General Manager Matt Millen was fired, telling the Detroit Free Press, ''If I had William Clay Ford's number, you'd be hearing a dial tone right now.''
Reese said he would evaluate the state of any franchise that approaches him.
''You have to evaluate everything from top to bottom,'' he said. ''My impression and from the league's perception, Cleveland is probably one of the classier organizations. At least as an outsider looking in, they're trying to do everything right. They do everything first class.''
Reese wondered if the Browns are as bad as their record, especially after offseason trades brought high-priced defensive linemen Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams, quarterback Derek Anderson was given a new contract and free-agent receiver Donte' Stallworth was signed to a deal that included $10 million guaranteed.
''They made a large investment in the offseason to try to get better. Did that pay off? I'm not sure it did. You have to evaluate why,'' Reese said. ''You won 10 games, you have a Pro Bowl quarterback and receivers, now you're looked at differently than an expansion club. The schedule gets harder, draft choices are not as good, your opportunity to pick up players off the waiver wire is not as good.
''There's a point the players have to understand that you have to notch it up one more notch.''
Reese also looks at the Browns' 2-0 record on Monday night, especially their 35-14 victory over the New York Giants (11-2).
''That's frustrating. A team that can beat the New York Giants, then the Giants run off seven in a row. You've got to say, 'Wait a minute, what happened to that team that played on Monday night?' '' Reese said.
No matter how he assesses the Browns overall, Reese thinks that the team has major assets in Anderson and Brady Quinn, both on injured reserve.
''It's hard to get one quarterback you consider a franchise quarterback,'' Reese said. ''At least when you look at the contract they gave D.A. and the drafting of Brady Quinn in the first round, you're saying to the world you think they're both franchise quarterbacks. That's indeed a luxury. Where you go with it is another issue. But at least at the most important position in professional sports they appear to be loaded.''
An All-America defensive lineman at UCLA, Reese entered the NFL in 1975, serving as an assistant in Detroit, San Francisco and Minnesota before joining the Houston Oilers in 1986. After he became general manager in 1984, Reese's teams went 111-102 and reached the Super Bowl in 1999.
Reese is eager to return and was not soured by how his career with the Titans ended, reportedly in a power struggle with coach Jeff Fisher.
''I was in the league 32 years. I started when I was 23 or 24,'' he said. ''It's really the only thing I know in my adult life. I understand and feel comfortable with it. I'd like to think after all that experience I can help somebody win a game someplace.'' web page

Just as I said above, there are good reasons that very qualified people would love to work in Cleveland, for Randy Lerner.
''When I look at organizations and potential jobs, you always look at do they have what it takes to win. That's an owner willing to invest, the facility, the stadium, the fan base,'' Reese said. ''Cleveland's got all of that. "
For the fan complaining on this message board and others about Randy Lerner and the way he handles himself as the owner, their are and will be many who would love to work for him.

I think the guy has a few screws loose. He's like trying to hard to put his foot in the door, it's like frightening. I don't think I'd want them working for me, especially since he repeats the same line over and over and just changes the team name.

LJ,, I'll say this,, if Zorn is fired and both snyder and lerner make a run at Cowher,,, Lerner would win.. reason is this,, Snyder did Cowhers Mentor (marty) way wrong.. Cowher won't forget that...
Just a guess. Snyder just like Davis in Oakland has a bad rep.. (davis moreso) He's still capable of landing the good coaches,, but it's gonna change at some point.
At least the changes for the Browns coaching have been with pretty good reason.. Palmer,, the record stunk, Davis,, attitude and the record wasn't good, RAC (if he is actually fired) will be because of the team record.
And in all cases, these guys were given time,,, Palmer 2 years, Davis 3 and RAC 4. Only Palmer might have been a rush to judgment, and Randy wasn't involved in that or the subsequent hiring of Davis
I think if you stack up Lerner and Snyder.. money equal,, Lerner would win. JMO howver.

florida...Yea, Reese does seem to be trying a little too hard.
He had similar comments about a possible opening in Detroit. I guess the guy does have a good record when it comes to his past performance as GM.
I wonder how Reese's comments make Savage feel?

Sure is... he wants to be back in the league in a meaningful way, and he is publicly tossing his hat into every ring he sees. It's called lobbying through the media.... marketing. If he can get some segements of various fan bases to start shouting for him, then on the off chance that some owner is stupid enough to listen to what its fans are saying, then he might garner a little more consideration. At the very least, he is getting free publicity which puts his name out there for everyone.

You don't lobby for a job through the media. Just by his comments Reese probably eliminated himself.
Marty took the high road: " I'm retired. Probably not going to return. I never say never. It would intriquing working with Bill." Hmmmmm!
Marty is like Parcell's he just can't stay away from the game he loves.
Having him and Cowher, with Savage in charge of scouting and the draft would be a marriage made in heaven.
It would put me on cloud 9.

How about the GM that got ran out of Houston for drafting Super Mario (Casserly). Looks like he didn't blow it after all...
I'm not really pimping Casserly since I never followed his career. Just wanted to point out how he was thrown away too soon.

P,, isn't casserly the same guy that was with the Redskins years ago and did a pretty decent job there with Joe Gibbs as the Coach? Ahh,, yes,, the internet,,, what a wonderful tool: Quote:
Charley Casserly is one of the most highly respected, and successful, general managers in NFL history. In his 23-year career with the Washington Redskins, he saw the team go to four Super Bowls, winning three. As a scout for the Redskins, he was responsible for spotting Joe Jacoby and Jeff Bostic, who made up the formidable offensive line known affectionately as the Hogs.
Starting as an unpaid intern under Redskins coach, George Allen, Casserly, worked his way up from intern to scout to assistant GM. In 1989, Casserly became a full General Manager. He is most respected for finding quality players late in the draft, such as Brian Mitchell and Stephen Davis, who ran for 1,450 yards in 1999. In 1999, Casserly was voted NFL Executive of the Year.
Starting in 2000, Casserly took over the reins of the expansion Houston Texans, becoming Senior Vice President and General Manager of the club. The Texans were not nearly as successful as the Redskins were and he resigned in 2006.
Throughout his tenure as a football executive, Casserly has also had an extensive broadcasting career. He has worked for local radio and TV in both Washington and Houston as an analyst. He has also been a contributor to ESPN radio and the show, "Edge NFL Match-Up." Currently, he is an NFL analyst for CBS sports.
http://www.football.com/commentators/charlescasserly.html
He had some bad luck with the Texans,, but before that,, the man had a bit of a midas touch.
wonder why he failed in Houston? That expansion stuff can really be a career killer....

I agree. That in and of itself is enough for me not to want him here. Kind of classless IMO

Gotta gripe! OR I got a gripe, not sure which; perhaps I mean both! That only part of this upsets me is the "continuity" thang. As miserable as we have been, don't overrate this, MR. Lerner. I don't want to maintain 'continuity' with the fishbone Iabout choked to death on, nor do I want to keep a warm fuzzy contact going with the Atomic Ptomaine Chicken gave me food poisoning. In a franchise this storied, be SURE AND CERTAIN about the worth of continuity in the office, capacity, role, function of anyone carried over. I would argue against continuity in those who got you here, those who proved incapable of getting you out of here (the hole we are in), and anyone not showing improvement. If we discover that some overrides have been in place, say by FO or coaching sidelines, then maybe a chance. Just do NOT hold back, pulleeeze! Cauterize it; buy a new and proven direction, regardless of NFL quota requirements or other artificial issues. Proven success; fans are still hungry. Tired of being lame in the NFL>

I'll tell ya what I'm rooting for: An implosion of the Cowboys.
Wade Phillips wouldn't survive a colapse down the stretch, and he's one helluva defensive coordinator, who just so happens to really know how to run the 3-4.

Or maybe it's get a grip So along the continuity line. We all hear that good teams have continuity. But are we making the wrong suppositions. The common feeling is that teams are good because they maintain continuity. But could it be that teams maintain continuity because they are good?
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

Then there's just plain bad continuity, such as what we've seen with the Lions.

Former Titans official in mix Ex-GM Floyd Reese would welcome call from Browns owner

''Cleveland's got all of that........
I do believe some of us came to the same conclusion as the opinion below, concerning Reese's interests......
CONSENSUS BUILDS THAT FLOYD SHOULD SHUT UP

When former Titans G.M. Floyd Reese used his visibility as an employee of ESPN to openly politick for the vacancy at the top of the Lions organization, more than a few league insiders believed it was bad form.
The fact that former CEO Matt Millen already was gone made some overlook Floyd’s football faux pas.
A far different reaction has occurred in the wake of Reese’s decision to lobby publicly for the top job in Cleveland.
After all, G.M. Phil Savage is still employed.
“In Detroit, Millen was already dead,” one league insider told us. “In Cleveland, we don’t even know yet whether Savage has a terminal illness.”
We believe (as do others) that it’s horribly bad form for Floyd to be openly seeking the job in Cleveland. In our view, any prospective employers should be taking close notes regarding Reese’s behavior, because the judgment and tact he’s exercising while seeking a job might have some relevance to the judgment and tact he’d exercise once he has another job in the NFL.
If, that is, he ever has another job in the NFL.
We also think that ESPN should be taking a closer look at its policies and procedures regarding former NFL figures who are on temporary scholarship at Bristol University. We can’t recall guys like Vinny Cerrato, Tom Donahoe, or Marty Schottenheimer using their on-air work as a way to openly apply for other jobs, either via statements made on ESPN platforms or in interviews with other media outlets.
Reese’s routine, and the appearance that ESPN implicitly is approving it, makes the network look like an enabler at best and an accessory at worst in Floyd’s effort to get himself re-employed — possibly at the expense of guys who currently have jobs.
Of course, maybe ESPN can hire Savage to take Reese’s place. And then Savage can parlay that position next year into consideration for NFL jobs that aren’t yet vacant.
Regardless of whether Reese should or shouldn’t be chasing jobs in the press and whether ESPN should or shouldn’t be troubled by it, the Browns have a real decision to make after the season ends. Do they keep Savage, or do they let him go?
Well, the guy who wants to replace Savage if the decision is made to release him already has put forth earlier this year a cogent, well-reasoned position on the matter.
That’s right, Floyd Reese praised the work of Savage in March 2008.
So if the Browns think Reese is the right man to run the show, then maybe they should accept the free advice that Reese already has provided — and retain Savage. web page
