Winslow says he wants to stay with Browns amid bumpy season

BEREA, Ohio -- Despite a disappointing season and an ugly dispute with Cleveland's front office, Kellen Winslow wants to stay with the Browns.

Winslow will miss Monday night's game in Philadelphia with a badly sprained left ankle, and the oft-injured tight end isn't sure if he'll return to the field for Cleveland's last two games. Earlier this season, he was briefly suspended by the Browns for making disparaging remarks about the organization following his hospitalization with a staph infection.

"I love being a Cleveland Brown," he said Wednesday. "The guys here, we don't know who's going to be here next year. You just have to focus on this year. That's all you can do. ... I do want to be back here. I love being here. I love playing here. The fans have stuck by me."

Winslow said he has a "very good relationship" with Browns owner Randy Lerner, who will wait until after the season before deciding on the fates of coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Phil Savage.

Winslow missed two games with the staph infection and has just 43 catches after making 82 as a Pro Bowl selection last season.

"It's been a tough year all along through the stuff that's happened to me, it just hasn't gone my way," Winslow said. "I'm going to continue to fight and try to be a consistent player."

I'm glad to hear it, but I can't say I really expected him to say how badly he wanted out, etc. I think whining and moaning would hurt his trade value as teams may already be skeptical about him with his injury issues. Throw in a malcontent attitude and there wouldn't be too many teams that would want to touch him, IMO.

While I'm glad to hear he wants to be a Brown, it doesn't change my opinion that he's going to be more of a distraction then anything.. If I could get a first day pick in the coming draft.. I'd really think long and hard about pulling the trigger... But then again, what do I know....

I hope we aren't dumb enough to trade him.

But whether or not he remains here he's still my favorite player in the league.

Yeah he will want to be one of the highest paid browns for 7 years. Not a high paid guy for 2 with health clauses. We will see how bad he wants to be a Brown. I think he will chase the best offer. I would if I had his knees.

This is just my biased opinion, ok? Those words he spoke? They are exactly what his agent told him to say.

Kellen is going where the money is, and I highly doubt it will be staying in Cleveland, regardless of those nice words he said that Robbinghouse told him to say.

I think we'd be dumb not to trade him if he's pushing for a long term deal.

What organization is being run more poorly than ours,....?? That's what it's going to take to get anything for him. I truly expect nothing more than at most a 4th round pick, or some money. Too much baggage.

He wants more money. - He nevers shuts up about money. He's not a team guy. He may play hard, but it's because he wants more money, not because he cares about how well the Browns do. -After one decent season, he wanted a new contract, follow that up with a Pro-Bowl season, and he wanted a new contract. -He hired an agent that is known for stopping at nothing to get his clients more money.

I'll tell you what's going to be just as interesting as what players we acquire this off-season, and that's how Savage handles Greedlow and Dropwards. They both want new contracts, and neither guy has done anything remotely close to earning them this season.

I wouldn't care if the Browns traded Winslow if the price was right. His health is the main issue, not his heart.

I do wonder why he would be speaking out now?

He has to know that a coaching change is likely....hmmm...new contract ground work?...maybe

Toadie....honestly, I was just making a general statement and your attempting to make something from it?

You want to break down his complete game?

The guy has heart, playing with injuries, through pain...now if you want me to break down his game, just say the word.

1) Glad he still wants to be here. I want him here. Don't want to trade him. He's a "gamer."

2) He probably knows that a lot of teams will take that chance of losing their top TE. And most teams do just as well without a good TE.

I don't understand some of you! The media makes all this fuss abot how Winslow is going to hold out of TC for a new contract, and all he does is show up, practice hard, and talk about his excitement for the team. The season doesn't go well, he gets crapped on by the front office, and he still says he wants to be a Brown, he loves his teammates and his fans. What more does this guy have to do? Short of maybe Josh Cribbs and possibly Shaun Rogers, we don't have a guy that plays harder than Winslow. Our defense could take a few lessons from him about playing with heart and toughness. I am so glad we have a guy like Winslow on our team and I hope he spends his entire career with us.

I think we all would except his career might only be 2 more years. So we do not want to pay a 7 year bonus for 2 years of service.

Winslow gets the biggest raw deal of any Brown from this board. I love the way he plays. he fights, he shows emotion, he has amazing hands, yet reading some of these posts you would think he was Art Modell's love child.

What player doesn't want more money? what player doesn't hire an agent to get him the very best deal? Winslow would be an idiot if he didn't do these things. Then the comment 'he plays hard because he wants more money' this can be applied to EVERY player in the NFL. GMAB

Okay so his blocking skills are terrible! If we had a TE that blocked well you would be moaning that he doesn't have good hands or he doesn't run the right routes.

I for one hope Winslow stays ....

Tight end Kellen Winslow wants to be back with Cleveland Browns

BEREA, Ohio — Kellen Winslow was reluctant to talk, what with his tongue being a past problem.

But the talented tight end, whose badly sprained left ankle will likely keep him off the field the remainder of Cleveland's schedule, decided to sit down at his locker stall Wednesday and address his disappointing season with the Browns.

He hopes it's not his last one.

Despite the Browns' shocking slide and the uncertainty leading into an upcoming off-season of probable change, Winslow wants to stay in Cleveland.

"I love being a Cleveland Brown," he said. "The guys here, we don't know who's going to be here next year.

"You just have to focus on this year. That's all you can do. ... I do want to be back here. I love being here. I love playing here. The fans have stuck by me."

Although Winslow's ankle remains swollen - he hurt it in a Nov. 30 game against Indianapolis - and he has a sprained right shoulder, the oft-injured 25-year-old is winding down this season in better shape than he has in some time. Winslow doesn't anticipate needing any surgeries, a welcome change after having multiple procedures on his right knee in recent years.

During an interview he initially turned down, Winslow revealed for the first time that noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews worked on his knee last winter.

Winslow hasn't given up on playing again this season. He is continuing to get treatment and has been strengthening his ankle in hopes of avoiding his third trip to the reserve-injured list since joining the NFL in 2004. Injuries have already cost him nearly two complete seasons.

"I can come back, but I want to be healthy enough to help my team win," he said. "I don't want to just be out there to be out there.

"I want to help my team win."

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said the club has discussed shutting Winslow down.

"We have talked about it," he said. "Our range is anywhere from three-to-six weeks.

"He wants to have the opportunity to see if it will get better. If it will get better I think he would like to try to play. We are playing it by ear and seeing what happens."

In an implausible season filled with drama and defeat, Winslow's ugly feud with Cleveland's front office over his bout in hospital for a staph infection was perhaps the club's most embarrassing moment. He was briefly suspended for making disparaging remarks about the Browns, who later rescinded their one-game penalty.

Still, the disagreement left a mark and is fuelling speculation Winslow, who came into the 2008 season seeking a contract extension, will continue his career elsewhere.

Winslow's future in Cleveland may hinge on what moves owner Randy Lerner decides to make following his off-season review of Crennel and general manager Phil Savage. Winslow would not comment directly on what impact the futures of Crennel and Savage would have on him staying with the Browns, but he seemed to take a swipe at Savage.

"I don't know what's going to happen," he said. "All I can focus on is my rehab.

"Whatever happens, happens. ... Mr. Lerner and I have a very good relationship. I'm very happy with him."

There's no denying Winslow's talent. Even with the injuries, his speed and sure hands make him one of the league's premier tight ends.

However, his checkered medical history and tendency to be a distraction could force the Browns to move him.

Winslow's current contract runs through the 2010 season. He's scheduled to make US$4.5 million in 2009, and $4.75 million the following year. Winslow, who made his first Pro Bowl last season after catching 82 passes for 1,106 yards, was asked if he was confident his contract issues could be worked out.

"I hired (agent) Drew Rosenhaus for that. That's his job. I might just want to go and reach free agency," he said, laughing. "Who knows?"

If his season is over, Winslow will finish with 43 catches for 428 yards and three touchdowns - hardly the type of numbers the son of a Hall of Famer was expecting.

But Winslow couldn't have imagined the Browns being 4-9 or that they would lose quarterbacks Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn to season-ending injuries, or that former college teammate Ken Dorsey would wind up as Cleveland's starting quarterback.

Nothing has gone as planned.

"It's been a tough year all along, through the stuff that's happened to me, it just hasn't gone my way," he said. "I'm going to continue to fight and try to be a consistent player."

My thoughts are that he is signed through 2010 and we tell him we will talk after 2009, dependent on his play. If he balks at playing, we attempt to trade him; if we don't get what we feel is real value for him then he can play or sit. If he sits, we fine him through camp and take his pay during the season.

They've been more than fair to him........and though he asked for a new contract months ago after catching 40 balls and losing more time he nor his agent should utter a word about a new deal after this season.

We need help; I am willing to trade him. Heck of an athlete. Give him that. One with raw attitude, beaucoup injuries, mucho drops, seems to be a flag collector, especially if it can kill a drive, and a marginal blocker who seems to hold regularly.
Glad he wants to be a Brown. Has been a source of distraction since arrival, generated a bunch of negative PR. Expects too much $$$$$ for too little production. Heiden gives us a bunch more IMO, and I LIKE Heiden.
PS This is NOT his MaMa typin'!

Only here can a Pro Bowler say he wants to stay and get dogged. Winslow is a great team player, whose emotions get the best of him because he hates losing. Nothing wrong with a player that hates losing and is pumping up the crowd when they are winning.

It could be worse, he could not care about wins and losses and just be happy to get a paycheck regardless what happens.

Oh O.k ..glad you guys forgot about the mess that he caused during the bye-week..
Wonder if you'll barf the next time he blows up...
Aren't any of you smart enough to know whats going on?
Dude knows his contract isn't going to be reworked..he knows Lerner was not pleased at his antics..he knows with his medical condition regarding his knee that no team is going to bash in the door , trade for and deal with that Gengis Khan of a agent..so he needs to mend some fences to keep his career alive..
Psst...he's not in the drivers seat in this case.,.

Really? When did this happen? You mean the front office that stood by him when he irresponsibly put himself and his career in danger and left the team without a high draft pick for a season? The one who worked with him so he could get paid and stay here even after all that? The one who watched him do something stupid again and then try to put the blame on the Browns. That front office?

I don't agree, but even if everything you say is accurate, KW has been the source of so much negative pulicity and off the field distractions that he should be traded while he still has value. He hurts the team more than helps it.

Moi???

Can I assume you were just clicking on me? I went and checked and I just saw the one post about the Jock Rocket

But now that you mention it... I have no problems with KW2's game day effort...for the most part its right there with how you want guys to fight.

I do have a problem with KW2 making up his own routes.
Not knowing the formations and where he lines up.

I do question his effort on the 6 days between Sundays???

Do I care that he didn't play for 2 years and collected millions then states we are not taking care of him and he wants a new deal with 3 years left on his contract? Sure...but mostly cause he has the Devil Agent who right off the bat wants a new contract and feeding KW2 who I don't think has much of a brain on his own.

No I don't like the fact that he hasn't "Improved" on his blocking...which means a gifted athlete just didn't put the effort. Blocking is more a state of mind...of sacrifice.

I do like his toughness but I've seen him quit a couple of times.

But last and not least...he's a luxery item. We can win with him or without him.

If he's on board...fine. If not, get what he's worth.

The Crotch Rocket thing was half tongue in cheek half real. Cause he's only a fraction of what he could have been. And that forever he took away from the Browns.

Do you think the benefits of his play override the distractions, baggage and questionable health he brings?
