there is just no way we keep both of them with the kind of contract they savage signed DA to.....the time to move him was last year when he had trade value...savage bumbled that big time. now as you said DA's stock in trade value is next to nothing....but his new fat contract will result in us not getting value in return.

I am with DCDawg. Two important missing pieces on D: 1) A killer edge rusher; 2)a coach with the hard attitude to BRING the Beast! RAC isn't it, has refused to do it, even though pressure killed us over and over again. I truly do NOT favor the scenario of having him back with the DC only role. Not if it means giving the bad guts all afternoon. This is a major philosophical flaw that figured into every loss.

will there be someone in FA....? There is nothing in the draft that I think will make a huge impact, or be any better than what we have......I have been trying to find a list of FA this year, any idea where I can find that...????

RAC adjusted his philosophy to fit the talent he was forced to use. That's not an indictment of RAC's schemes. RAC has PROVEN that he can coach an outstanding defense. There's a problem with talent on the defensive side of the ball. You can't make an elephant run a marthon or be angry when the trainer can't get him to do it successfully.

Scratch that......I found it......and damn.....there are some descent FA's out there as far as pass rushers...starting with Julius Peppers.....wouldn't that be nice....followed by Albert haynesworth, Bertrand Berry, Terrell Suggs....and some others.......

Anyone can coach an outstanding D.....Not many teams have a D that was as good as the one he had with the Patriots.....what makes you a good coach is what you can do with the talent that you have........

Just clicking... Well a lot of my opinion hasn't really changed but we do know that Savage is no longer our GM.
That is big on the discussion cause whoever comes in will not have the stigma of --- got to give BE every opportunity to succeed cause we invested an Overall #3 pick for him.
But I still maintain you have to have a WR in here that can take his place as a playmaker...BEFORE THE DRAFT. you don't want to be locked in with "THE NEED" stigma and here will be a NEW REGIME and what do they do with their "SIGNATURE" first pick of the DRAFT and NEW REGIME...WR?!?!?!? Ground hog day...it was the title I gave Butch's first draft - And so would I give this new group.
YOU DON'T BUILD A TEAM AROUND A WR...QB? yes. Defense? Yes. TE? No WR? No.
The key here is that we do not have BE locked up long term. His 2nd contract is coming and I really don't think he will be lenient with us cause he LOVES IT HERE SO MUCH or that IT'S ALWAYS BEEN HIS DREAM TO PLAY FOR THE BROWNS! We will have to pay dearly for him.
It might be one of the first and maybe important decisions of the new Regime.
What about BE. Now everything I get from Pioli is that he's a no nonsense type guy. So I can see him moving KW2 to Zona for Boldin - who recently has had problems there.
But I think then and only then can they consider moving BE....remember, especially if McDaniels comes aboard...as much as you don't build a team around a WR. They both (Pioli n McDaniels) can see the difference that a playmaking WR can make on an offensive team.
We can assume if they come Stallworth is as good as gone.
Also if they come who will they get to be our Welker almost as important if not more to that offense then Moss. JJ?
The guy we can live without actually would be KW2...he is signed for 2 more seasons and could give us some leverage in the BE happening.
But until Pioli, McD or anyone signs on to remotely give us some direction that we are heading - its tough to predict what will happen.

Would it be worth it though.....all the drama that will come from it...as soon as Quinn has 1 bad game......here comes the DA talk......I saw make a decision, and trade, or cut the other.......unless the cap hit is to serious to take that is......

DA isnt a starter...but as a backup Id love to try and keep him. I agree with you tho with him on the roster some fans will make a case for him to play if quinn was to have a bad game...but i just dont think that we can get much for him in trade as this year hurt his stock...if we could find a way to keep him i would be happy. unless we get a stud LB, or RB for him i say try to keep him, and who knows maybe the new staff will want to let them duke it out in camp and go from there

that is a good point.......haviing them both on the team will definitely keep them in a dog fight to keep their levels of play up.....and now that his stock has dropped, I doubt he will bring much in a trade......maybe a package deal or something...but you know with the new regime comes new ideas, and with the 1st pick they are gonna want a new face to go along with what they are trying to do....so i doubt they trade the 1st pick away.........

That would be optimal but it cant work that way in Cleveland.
Somebody needs to take the job by the horns. He cant have somebody looking over his shoulder. DA has to go or Brady has to go. We have saw enough of this 2 QB crap in Cleveland. It doesnt work.....period.

I think DA is too pissed at the fans to really consider staying. I think he wants out and wants to start fresh.
He'll probably be gone by the draft.

Yeah, that is exactely what needs to happen......You put all that drama to bed...try and get what you can with DA and move on......the D needs to much work not to try and gain something.......

IMO...The NUMBER ONE job of the new HC is to NAME a QB...
This is the quickest way to STABILIZE this thing immediately...

Yeah, I agree.....this is first thing on his "Honey Do" list......then, I would suggest looking at the rest of the roster and make a statement move...just like Parcells always does......Since really the only way the QB thing gets put to rest, is that Quinn is the starter, I say take DA, package him up, lets say with a Stallworth, or a Holly......and try to get a DB, a WR or a draft pick of some sort....and then you could use the 1st pick for Rey Maualuga LB....I think he is the best LB in the draft......Some people have Aaron Curry ranked ahead of him....but he did play for Wake forest.....

I'll give you the Brian Urlacher for New Mexio......but that is one out of how many.....I'm just going with odds here......If I come in as a new Gm or coach...and I have a top 5 pick....I had better make it count....ya know...??? I'm not saying that Curry isn't better, but the fact that he played for Wake Forrest has got to come into some sort of consideration, don't ya think..?? Personally, I say avoid both and get Jenkins from Ohio State....but that is just me....

Not if it's the wrong one. Wouldn't it be better to see both under whatever O you want to install? I'd like to see whomever fits the best DA or Brady. Whomever it is, I don't care. I just want to see the one who is best based on what the coaches say.
I don't want to make this a QB thread since that's the best way to darn it to heck
Back to edwards: I think a new coach/FO gives him a clean slate. If he still doesn't catch the ball, the FO lets him walk. IF he gets his head on right, he gets a fair contract offer, but less then he thinks he's worth.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

I for one am a fan of Wake Forest. I have a friend that goes to Law School their as well.
Also, I pimped Chris Barclay HARD!!!!!! way before we picked him up... Luckily Savage was on the message board, and snagged him... Too bad he didn't stick.

I don't know much about either of them, but you could look at it a different way as well. Ray played on a team full of good players and maybe that made him look better. There's different ways of looking at things.

In what capacity? I'll give you that USC is better than Wake Forest, considerably better.. but if you're using the "level of competition" argument then I'll disagree... Aside from their bowl game every year, I don't think USCs schedule of UCLA, Oregon St., Cal and Arizona are any better than Florida State, Boston College, Virginia Tech and Maryland.... Out of conference, USC did play Ohio State but Wake played Vandy and MIssissippi who are both .500 or better in the SEC, it's not like they played St. Marys of the Poor...

How about this???
Tomorrow... We will see what Maualuga does on the field against a pretty good Penn St.
One game doesn't mean we need to draft this guy, or we do not need to draft this guy, but let's just see.
Curry didn't do very much from what I've heard with Wake Forest's bowl game... So lets see what Rey does come his.
And side note: Most ILB's that get drafted in rounds 1 and 2 do pretty well in the NFL. As for OLB's, it's a toss up. Some break out, and some just fall on their face.

I'm simply trying to look at it as if I was the new GM or coach of the Browns....I want....or actually NEED the 1st player that I take in the draft to be a good one, or as soon as one little bad thing happens...here comes the snowball effect and then my draft gets picked apart. The Browns have a terrible past in the draft when it comes to early picks....(IE..Tim Couch, Courtney Brown, Gerrard Warren, William Green)..... ....At least Thomas panned out, and it seems that Brady will be a good one too...... .....

Curry plays outside and Maualuga plays inside, so I wouldn't put too much into who is rated better. They play different spots. Not knowing if we stay 3-4 or go 4-3 next year, it's hard to say who would fit better. Staying 3-4, I would say our bigger need is inside and go with Maualuga. Haven't seen or heard too much on Curry, but have read one criticism of Maualuga is that he tends to play 'undisciplined' in his gap responsibility. Seeing him play and reading that makes me think of another Trojan who had that same label of being 'undisciplined' - Troy Polamalu.
From Cleveland to KC to south central Florida, this dawg has made his travels - and changed his display name for each move.

Well, I'm thinking that we will end up with the 3-4 again.....Pioli, Mangini, Marty, they all come with a 3-4 scheme don't they....??? Assuming that they do....and you take Rey with the 5th overall pick..that Gives us Rey and D'Qwell as ILB's....depending on what they do with Andra, Beau, Leon....and OLB we got Wimbley, A. Hall, McGinest, Orr......that is where we need the most help I guess.......maybe Curry would be a better fit.......

what ya think about a James Farrior, Mike Peterson, Jon Vilma.....all could be good band-aids for holes that couldn't be addressed in the draft.....obviously not the future, but all better than what we have.....and provide great leadership skills too.......

I could see Vilma maybe being money hungry.....But Farrior and Peterson not so much....I think they are gonna need to do something in FA....maybe Suggs........

here comes the DA talk
Any "DA talk" doesn't mean squat to the FO (any FO for that matter). The only drama associated with any struggles of Quinn that matter is what is on the scoreboard and what it takes to fix it. Imvho, what Derek has showed is that it is not likely that he is the fix.
I think we would be doing quite well to get a 4th for him, but doesn't his contract go with him? Is there anyone that wants to pay him that kind of money? Can we get someone to fill the #2 spot with a 4th round pick that is as capable as him? I tend to think not and, quite frankly, until we improve our defense I think we need a #2 that has the abilities to get the ball down field with proven success (despite his inaccuracy).
This is a bit off topic, but the thread was going that way a tad.

Yep, and it should be Quinn. We gave up a lot to get him in 2007.... time to find out if he's gold or garbage

Quinn for 09'..... if we draft two great LB's in rounds 1 and 2, we could have a defense that could keep Quinn on the field.

Yeah, that would be nice, but I just don't think we could get one good enough to over take Leon in the 2nd round.....

Yeah, he has a great scouting report too...... Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia After redshirting as freshman in 2004, Clint Sintim started every game as a freshman in 2005 and never looked back. During that freshman campaign he ranked fifth on the team in tackles, third in sacks and fourth in tackles-for-loss. His numbers steadily improved over his career and he tallied 45 tackles, 12.0 tackles-for-loss and four sacks in 2006. By his junior year Sintim was a leader of the defense and recorded 77 tackles, ranking third on the team. By his senior campaign he totaled 70 tackles, 11.0 sacks and 13.0 tackles-for-loss. His 0.92 sacks per game average in 2008 was the best among linebackers in the entire nation and he was rewarded with second-team All-ACC honors. Despite all the sacks, Sintim is a well balanced outside linebacker. He can deliver the big hit, get to the quarterback and drop back into coverage. At 6-3 and 254 pounds, he has the size to be a dominating linebacker in the NFL. To many pundits, Sintim is the second best outside linebacker after Wake Forest's Aaron Curry. That would put him ahead of players like Brian Cushing and Marcus Freeman. Senior week and the combine will be the difference maker, but Sintim could end up being a first round selection. He may not have gotten much recognition during the season due to the relatively poor performance of the Cavaliers, but that will change now.
