Eo, this hiring should make KWII happy. JMHO
BTW, hope we don't ever start hearing the "CHUD IS A DUD" in next year or two. Give the young man a chance to learn and grow as soon as he is able. JMHO

LOL I hear ya brother,,, I hear ya..
hey everyone, go over to the Browns site.. they have another Vid up with Jamir Howerton interviewing Chud in the locker room... I gotta say this, he really is saying all the right things (what little of substance he is saying at any rate).,,.. Who knows if it's going to translate in to a better offense, but he sure is saying everythiing right...

I do hope we start hearing "Chud is the stud!" chants though.

Gentlemen and ladies... There are no guarntees in life... accept for death... No taxes don't have to be paid... But if you don't your life choices become limited... But the IRS won't end your life... Did the Saints new head coach have any prior head coaching experience in the NFL? How about the Jets new head coach this past season...? Didn't they both make the playoffs this year with teams that "had no chance", or "no way they would be there" This guy is a good O-mind, is a solid teacher and has been valuable and successful every where he has coached and played... He has my support until the time he doesn't deserve it... Good luck and kick ass Chud!!! By the way, the Boise State Bronco's were undefeated and the number 5 team in the country this season with a 1st year head coach with no head coaching expeience in Div. 1., a 28 year old 1st year offensive co-ordinator that had no prior experience as an O-cord and a 29 year old 1st year D-cord that had none either... So it can happen... Lets show some class and real support support for Chud... He very well could be one of the keys to the Browns future success. This means all of us, including us know it all nobodys need to shut up and give the guy a viable chance, treat him like he is one of us and or die trying... JMHO

Something to think about; he was on the offensive staff of SD, who as we all know centers around a great RB. Could this be a sign of who PS is looking to draft in the 1st? As I recall, none of the Chargers' OL were 1st rounders.
Those are two very large reaches.
Not real excited about this move. I've had about enough of inexperienced coaches, but time will tell.

Besides, what OC wouldn't want to get his hands on a LT that could anchor the line on the left side for the next 10 years?
In addition if I listen to so many posters on here, there is a bunch of strong RB's coming out next season... so why do we need to take one now?
A couple things on this...
Regarding get a 10 year tackle, I agree. I love AP and wont be upset if we get him, but I almost want Thomas more and if Savage grades out AP and JT as equal and they are both sitting there at 3/4 for us. I bet he would take Thomas as it is much harder to find a franchise LT than it is a franchise running back. Although one could say, Peterson is the latest and greatest but what would you take? (Hypothetical) Orlando Pace or Edge James/Shaun Alexander? I would take Pace. (sorry for the pace referrence! haha). But now say it is Pace or Tomlinson, I'd take Tomlinson, but there is no guarantee JT is Pace nor is there that AP is LT. Everything is on potential.
And to clarify, I don't think AP is the next LT, he is not as good of a receiver and route runner. Who knows, maybe we take someone else and 5 years down the road AP is better than LT. What a headache, savage deserves his pay haha!
As far as the argument that alot of strong RB's are coming out next year, that is never safe to rely on. So many years we here how the next OL class will be the best in years and it turns out to be sub par. Sure you are going to have some talented guys coming out next year but you don't know the strength of the class until 1/2 way through the NCAA season.

j/k I like the hire, Chud is young enough to relate to the youuger players, but old enough to get his point accross, he's learned under Cam and Marty, seen what a RB can do and for those who wanna sign the RB from SD, he might be able to lure him over here, if thats what we wanna do. He's ran a high powered off. in Miami, and is a browns fan. I'm sure there's gonna be a lerning curve at first, but atleast Frye and him will have all winter to set things rolling...

There are my two kickers.
If AP were considered the next Tomlinson, he'd be ranked right there with Johnson as the surefire, can't-miss prospects. He's not. Neither is Thomas.
So all things being equal, it's harder finding that rock of a left tackle than it is finding a really good running back.
By the way, did I allready mention that any connection between LT being on Chud's former team and the chances of us taking Peterson increasing is completely ludicrious?
Here's another one: Since Rivers was taken as a rookie and put on the bench, it could mean that we're going to take Quinn and sit him behind Frye for a year, then let them compete for the job.
Wait, here's another one: Since McNeill was taken in the 2nd round, it means that we'll take a defensive player with the 1st round pick, knowing that we have a real chance at taking a good left tackle who can start as a rookie in the 2nd.
The more logical discussion as it pertains to Chud is what kind of offense is he going to run. I think a former TE's coach dictating to Savage who he wants in the first round is rather outlandish...........

Honestly, only time will tell.
When Romeo was hired, most were excited because he came from the Bellicheck tree, his defenses were always awesome, and he was a 3 time Super Bowl winner.
None of that has helped turn our fortunes around.
Every situation is different and unique. Some guys got 'it', some don't. Some are always going to be successful because they are competent at what they do and intelligent enough to get the job done. Some aren't. It's no different in 'normal' life and business. People will succeed in some situations and not in others. Some will always succeed.
Let's hope he's the latter.

Almost any "experienced" coach you get, is going to have positive and negative aspects to his resume. It's been said that the only thing constant in NFL coaching is that, eventually, you're going to get fired. What causes the firing? Who knows... record, personality conflicts, players...It doesn't really matter... every coach out there gets fired... Even Shottenheimer was fired once upon a time.... in Cleveland....
With any coach, you roll the dice. The Lerner family like to go with hungry coaches, looking for a chance. Chud seems to have a good mix, college OC, interm NFL OC, offensive position coach in college and NFL, with success at all levels. It looks like he's worth a shot.
No disrespect intended too posters after this one, but I didn't want too have too come back and search for this little gem. This choice, could be a career making/breaking choice for Phil IMO. I do wonder how much Randy influenced this choice, if any at all. If Randy had any influence, I'm sure Chud being here previously must've have left a positive impression on Randy, considering we hired him.
I like the hire, but as with most coaches he will need some thoroughbreds, instead of donkeys too run the race. I hope the terminology he uses, and system is an easy transition for the players, and remaining staff.
If you look at the great QB's through history, they usually stayed in the same system. Marino, Brady, Montana, Young, Staubach, Bradshaw, Fouts, Manning, Kelly, Unitas, Graham, Namath, Ect, stayed in the same or simular system throughout their careers. You could say they made the systems, what they were, but allot can be said for the continuity of the being in the same system. We need too get too the point where we have a system, that works and we have that system as the core, which evolves depending on talent, rule changes ect.

I don't see any GM passing on a franchise LT in the Draft... unless they already have a guy like pace or someone of that skill level,,, Then yeah, you pass. Also, I don't `know if the RB's coming out next season are any better than those this year,,, no idea, I'm just repeating what others have said.. But I will say this, I do think that behind a better line, Droughns could still be effective for us for the next year or maybe even two.. Having said that, which position between LT and RB becomes more important to the team? That's for each of you to answer,,, for me, it's LT. But that doesn't mean I"m right And like Peen said somewhere,,, all of that depends on what happens in FA... We might end up going Defense again,,, maybe this time we go Branch.. Who knows!

Daman... Peterson could be a special RB... but IMO if he comes out next year he would be the 2nd or 3rd guy taken... the RB class next year (depending on if certain juniors come out) could be stacked.
I think it's obvious that we need to get better at the line... if Joe is there we have to take him IMO. Unless we get some major, MAJOR upgrades during FA.

Very outlandish indeed. The scouts, coaches input are taken into account, and no opinion is disrespected. I remember an article posted some time back about how Phil ran the war room, and nobody dictated too Phil who was going to be picked.

That depends,, do you think that Gallery is a franchise LT for the Raiders... If they answer that no, then yeah, maybe they will take him.... But I bet they don't feel that way.,. I doubt they have given up on Gallery already.
Detroit is next and I thought they felt good about thier LT.. if not, it's possible they take Thomas...
If you read my comment you will see that I put a caviat in there,,,, that being if a team felt it already had a guy they like, then they pass on a Franchise LT...

Interesting. I am relieved it's a new face. I am not one to say any and all change is automatically better. But if he came from Miami, he has some throwing background. I hope the Miami curse doesn't come with him. But if we can open up and be effective, by that I mean ambitious about scoring touchdowns, and doing that aggressively great. I know little about his pro career. I am suspect that success as tight ends is not the same as captaining the offense. But I am real certain it will be better than we saw this year. Fingers crossed and praying for respectability at last. Da Browns . . . May the Elf be with you! Use the Force, Phil!

I do agree with that. Romeo has almost zero say on this team.....not even about who mans his staff.
I doubt a fresh off the street coordinator is going to have much pull.

I hope by being earlier a hunk o cap is for impact free agents. I also think our talent was far better potentially than our OC's used by sets and scheme. This is a huge edge if we ever get a line, but they are the nasty part of the equation. Shoot the wounded and march. We need reliable contributors. Spare me the projects and the crap shoots. I wish him and our Browns all the luck and a few ood turnarounds. Da Browns . . . May the Elf be with you! Use the Force, Phil!

Toad, I don't know that is correct,, I think that if you hire a man to do a job and he says he needs a claw hammer,,,, and you give him a BallPeen hammer,,,, you are taking your chances he's gonna fail.. I'd think he will have some say in te decision.
Speaking of Ball Peen,, I don't know how, from toads comments you decided that RAC doesn't have much say as to how the team is made up... again, if you want a man to cook the meal, you ought too let him make a grocery list.
Last season, Phil said he ask RAC which was most important,,, an edge rushing OLB or a D lineman,,,,, According to both RAC and Phil, RAC chose the OLB,,, They drafted Wimbley.
Unless I'm wrong, that's input into the makeup of the team,,, Just a thought.

I'm late on this but. YAYYYY!
This guy is a young up and comer...and potentially our next HC if Romeo happens to last for a while, and can groom the kid.

i've gotta admit i'm suprised with all of the positive responses on this hire. i was really expecting something totally like the couch/holcomb days. the more i think about it, the more i like this hire. another local boy brought in that TRULY understands the meaning of rivalry. i honestly think this is the guy we targeted all along. SD's O was a run 1st (literally every 1st play was a run LOL) quick pass to LT or the TE. that would bring the D's closer so rivers could exploit the secondary. that was what i saw of their offense, i see the same scheme being used here basically. chud is a TE through and through, and i don't think very many schools have produced a finer crop of TE's than miami did while he was there. bubba franks, shockey, and winslow will always be a positive on his resume. i think this guy will finally give our O the identity it has been craving. i also believe that winslow will be the face of the O because of it. i'm not worried about experience as much in a OC than a HC. if you can call plays, you can call plays. IIRC when he took over OC duties when he was here last, we started screwing up our draft pick didn't we?
tradition can only carry you so far, then you have to start winning again.

Im wondering. Since Charlie is a mobile QB, will we see more rollouts this year?
I really hope we do, because that would increase effectiveness and use our QB to his full strength and potentially make him look better than he is/has been. He seems to throw very well on the run (DNs 41 yarder) and roll outs could help him do that. Id like to see some

I get on the board and this is the first thing I see, I love it! I like this hire too. He understands the rilvalry and the the Browns tradition, he should be good. Maybe now we see more creativity and more Winslow on third down situations, who knows? He was the chargers TE coach, maybe Chud will mold K2 into Gates?

Personally I thought we should have seen more this year... with Charlie being fairly mobile and having a crap OL... I would have thought it would have been better to have Charlie moving more... of course he might not feel comfortable throwing on the run? who knows

Since Charlie is a mobile QB, will we see more rollouts this year? since he's the closest thing we have to LT i can see it happening. seriously i wouldn't mind seeing charlie used to his strengths also. it's different if the rollout is designed. you know where you are going beforehand as opposed to getting "giddy" in the pocket. that alone can keep D's off balance enough to target anyone of our receivers.

I guess maybe we need to define what 'skill level' you are referring to. When you say franchise LT, I personally only think of 3 or 4 players and none of them play for the Raiders or the Lions.

If you read my comment you will see that I put a caviat in there,,,, that being if a team felt it already had a guy they like, then they pass on a Franchise LT...
I think you, myself, and every other poster that wants Thomas should prepare ourselves for disappointment - that's all. I think it's a 50/50 chance it happens if Thomas is on the board when we pick. I also think it could be Quinn or Peterson.
Nobody knows what Phil's thinking. And if we score a guard or two in free agency, Phil might be willing to roll the dice with Shaffer at LT next year.
It's nothing more than speculation. But I don't think it's a certainty we take Thomas if he's there when we pick.

I do agree with that. Romeo has almost zero say on this team.....not even about who mans his staff.
I doubt a fresh off the street coordinator is going to have much pull.
Phil calls the shots and sets the direction. He selects the players and now the coaches who are going to do things the way he envisions.
Why are you spreading more crap like this as fact? This is just opinion, but someone will pick this up and soon it will become 'truth'.
So Romeo is a liar now, too? He stated clearly in the press conference he told Savage he liked this OC. We all know that Crennel plays a good game of "tell the truth by omission" when he's getting grilled by the reporters, but he's never been a blatant liar. As well, Phil addressed this question directly in his last press conference with emphasism.
If you think about it for even a second, you'll come to the conclusion that Ted Washington, Andruzzi, McGinest and half the position coaches wouldn't be on this team if not for Romeo, and Phil was quoted last year as asking Crennel directly what he wanted more in the draft on D -- a pass-rusher or a run-stopper.
Several articles have pointed out clearly how the draft works -- all input is taken, evidence is collected, opinions are considered and every player is rated through countless meetings throughout the off-season, culminating in the "big board" ranking that Phil looks to on draft day. Of course he's not taking anyone's opinion on draft day -- the work has already been reduced to a numbers game at that point where he takes the highest-rated players left from the big board.
To state that Crennel has no input on the team is to say that Phil Savage ignores the talents that Crennel brings to the team. Having been a part of 5 Superbowls already and been a system notorious for turning blue-collar off-the-street guys into football stars and generating league-wide respect on all levels, Crennel is the coach Savage hired.
If he didn't want Crennel or respect what Crennel brings to the table, he'd be stupid not to fire him the second he had that thought. And we all know Savage is anything but stupid.

Just my $0.02.
I like the hire. I was disappointed when he was allowed to leave following the 2004 season, but could understand that the Browns couldn't make any promises until their Head Coach was hired. I think that he is a really bright guy.
I don't really get the infatuation many had with Davidson. I remain unimpressed with the results he obtained either as OL Coach or OC.

Speaking of Ball Peen,, I don't know how, from toads comments you decided that RAC doesn't have much say as to how the team is made up... again, if you want a man to cook the meal, you ought too let him make a grocery list.
Romeo has lost all power. He is a eunuch. he has little power and a singular purpose on this team....to hold the clipboard.
Romeo has just a little more input than I as to who is drafted and who is on his staff at this point.
In his PC he was reading notes about Chud when he introduced him. Had he actually known about the guy, he would have known them. Heck, he didn't even know Chud coached Winslow while at Miami!!??
I agree with your post....Romeo should have some say.....but he doesn't.
Why in the heck we are keeping him is beyond me...I am beginning to wonder if Savage wants someone he can keep under his thumb in the position.
Romeo is the guy.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

I hate to have to agree with you...Romeo is toast...dead man walking with his clipboard. Whether it is fair or not RAC has no future here...I wish it were different for him but it is what it is.

As rosy as we all were when rac was hired, he was always pretty much just holding a clip board in my mind. Holding it for Ferentz, Grantham, possibly now Cowher. The guy was pushing 60 when he took the job, you had to figure he wouldn't be here 10 to 15 years. I just hope the players have more faith in Romeo than we do, because if they dont, we are in for another [censored] poor year.
