Figured I would get this one up and running for the New Year.

First game of 2009 is tonight at the Q vs. the Bulls. Z is not playing as he will be resting his ankle. Sounds like he may have come back a bit early as this has been nagging him. I would imagine we won't see Z until the 9th vs. Boston..

January is a big month for the Cavs as we have our longest and toughest West Coast swing. Below, I have added the schedule for January, as well as the link to Brian Windhorst's PD "Cavs-Beat". For those of you that do not know, Windhorst is the Cavs beat writer, and probably the best beat writer in Cleveland. If you do not have a lot of time to watch the games, this is a great way to keep up with that is going on with the Cavs.

Lets Go Cavs!!

i like these monthly topics, very organized, and very useful...

and yes, windy is the best in the nba, bar none.

if something is going down, i usually check his blog to see what's going on, he usually lets you know as soon as he can confirm it.

i see a really tough game tonight, i know the bulls are horrendous on the road, but we're due for a home loss...

without z, we're gonna have to scrape, hopefully one of these young guys can step it up.

the bulls announcers just said that z had a second mri and they found some other damage...

i can't find anything that can confirm this on the web...

also, cavalier atittude, which is a great blog, has nothing.

Z has a chip and a small fracture in his ankle, he will be in a boot for a week and then he will be day to day.

thanks...

it sucks, but z needs to rest as much as we can allow him too.. i know friday night is boston, but we have bigger goals...

and we can still beat boston without z, it will just be much tougher, we'll need lebron to really take charge, maybe go a bit old school, and go for 45...

this bulls team is awful, i love watching larry hughes hoist up brick after brick, i still can't believe someone actually took him off our payroll.

I am liking what I have seen of JJ. Hopefully with a nice lead he will be getting lots of minutes.

it's kinda nice to have a young, raw rookie like hickson, and not have to start him, and make him play, where maybe he gets exposed, and fans and media alike really get after him... we have it so nice that hickson just gets small doses of meaningful time

i wish we had that with the browns, where we could phase guys in.

it would be just a whole lot easier, lolz.

I feel sorry for Fred McCloud, the Cavs play by play announcer. Game in and game out he has to endure Austin Carr's color commentary that includes:

"L-Train (or any Cavs player) throws the hammer down at the Q."

"Get that weak stuff out of there, young man."

I'm not questioning his knowledge of the game, but he's gotta be more original when he calls it.

he's a complete honk, but i love listening to him...

it's like madden... he brings virtually nothing to the broadcast, but you'd miss him if he were gone... it just sounds right, madden doing a football game, ac doing cavs basketball, it's the way it should be.

fred's not a bad announcer. he has good passion, and good knowledge. i think people were kinda turned off by him because reghi just dissapeared from the booth.

i don't mind fred at all though. we went to the finals in his first season, maybe he's good luck.

Cavs' Ilgauskas could miss up to month with ankle injury (LINK)
Jan. 2, 2009
CBSSports.com wire reports

CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas could miss up to a month after suffering a small fracture when he twisted his left ankle last month.

Ilgauskas sprained his ankle during a Dec. 10 game at Philadelphia. He missed only three games but has been bothered by pain and stiffness since returning. An MRI taken Friday revealed that Ilgauskas, who missed nearly two full seasons earlier in his career with foot problems, chipped the talus bone in his ankle.

The 7-foot-3 Ilgauskas said he's likely to be "out three to four weeks." He said his left foot, which has pins and screws in it from a restructuring operation, was not affected by the injury.

The Cavaliers' ball movement and offensive production slipped while Ilgauskas was out and limited in recent games. He's averaging 13.8 points and 7.1 rebounds.

Anderson Varejao replaced Ilgauskas in the starting lineup for Friday night's game against Chicago. The Cavs came in as the NBA's only unbeaten team at home with a 16-game winning streak on their home floor.

Cleveland forward Wally Szczerbiak was back after missing two games because of a bruised right knee.

Sucks. I wonder if this will force Ferry's hand in a trade.

I agree ... we really need another big man. We were thin upfront before, but this is going to hurt a little. Andy and Ben don't give use very many offense weapons (although Andy has been stepping it up this season) ... and JJ is still earning his stripes.

we'll be fine against crap defensive teams, like chicago, but against the elite teams, we are really going to have to rely on lebron...

hopefully we can get through this month at something close to our pace through the first 2 months...

not really anyone out there..Antonio McDyees would have been nice. but there really aren't that many quality big men out there..now if we are look at a PF..then maybe theres more options..maybe snag ak47 and move lebron to PF in certain sets..but as long as we get andy involved a little more, defense is what's going to keep us in these games and between sasha, bron, mo and delonte..we have plenty of offense

The good teams are gonna pack it on us. Teams are gonna love Andy trying to hit that mid-range jumper..

Without Z, we really have trouble stretching the floor.. The way we need to deal with this is simple. ATTACK the rim even MORE. Some teams, couldn't do this, but we have the horses that can dribble into traffic (LB, DWest, Mo). Yes, we are prolly gonna get a few more offensive fouls, but the more we attack, the more adept the defense will step out as the game goes on, leading to the ball movement we need...

Also wouldn't hurt if Boobie started shooting the ball better in this next month..

damn, i'm beginning to think we really aren't that good after all. this was a joke of a game. If it showed anything it showed 2 things..1. andy is a role/bench player at best and 2. we need to move the expirings of wally and snow for another post player. The refs were garbage. i probably would have beaned one in the head with a ball if i was brown. almost came back but lebron with some more choke decisions kinda hurt us. but he does so much good its hard to hold it against him. but he's hurt us alot too in times not trusting his teammates.

1. You need to relax, doubting how good our team is is ridiculous.

2. Varejao played a pretty good game...10 pts and 10 boards, but he shouldn't be out there for 40 minutes.

3. I am open to trading Wally, but only for someone that we know can step in without disrupting chemistry, and whos contract expires before '10.

4. I wouldn't call LeBron a choker, and to say that he doesn't trust his teammates is dumb. He almost trusts his teammates too much, more times then not in those type of situations he will dish to the open man, instead of forcing a shot.

at the end of games he almost ALWAYS takes the shot..don't matter whos wide open.. and i do doubt how good we really are, for the last month we've played some pretty crappy teams and we haven't beaten them down like we should..getting beat by this team is uncalled for..they have 2 players that would start for another team. and andy did not play a good game..what channel was the game you were watching..he was getting handled inside all game..the majority of his points came in the first quarter..like i said, he's a bench/role guy..nothing more...this team misses Z so bad its not even funny.. having to have wallace/andy out there together that much is hard for any team to overcome because both aren't very good. with Z in there..they can't bring those extra guys to lebron. I hope we give boston a good game and i think we might, but i also wouldn't be surprise getting blown out by 20

I think a good trade for us would be Wally for Brad Miller of Sacramento, that would make our front court one of the best in the NBA when Z returns.

These guys best get their heads outta their asses and realize u can't cruise thru 3 1/2 quarters and expect to win with a clamp down D the last 5 minutes...

They do that BS against a Boston and they get beat by 25...

i could see it maybe happen right around the deadline...

i still think we can go after joe smith, and hang on to wally's 13m...

they signed kristic, so i could see them possibly waive joe smith, or at least take eric snow's 6m...

doesn't matter either way for the cavs, because smith comes off the books this year...

miller is making 11+m with his contract expiring in 2010... so it wouldn't hurt us in our quest for resigning lebron and going after another big time free agent...

it's clear that without z, our offense goes back to what it used to be...

Unfortunetely we are not allowed to trade for Joe Smith this year due to league rules, but if he ends up getting bought out then I would love to have him back.

Brad Miller would be awesome though, and I think Wally might be enough by himself to get it done. I am not so sure if I want to trade Sasha though. We are going to need him for his D in the playoffs on some of the bigger wing players in the East. I would rather try to give them Darnell Jackson or Tarence Kinsey.

not only did boston lose, they lost to the new york bricks...

i think we are all overreacting to this... a typical cleveland fan patented knee jerk reaction... yes, we can't play as great offensively with z, but he's gone for a few weeks, not the rest of his career...

the cavs will be fine, we don't need to panic and trade wally for something we'll regret... we have to learn to play without z while we give him ample time to rest his foot... it could pay dividends for the playoffs, if he has some rest now... kinda like how boston would shut pedro down in july or august to have him ready for october...

but yeah, lolz @ the celtics getting lunch served by the bricks...

While I agree that we don't need to panic and trade Wally just for the sake of making a trade, their are a few guys out there that could really help us. Gerald Wallace, John Salmons, and Brad Miller are the 3 guys that I think that we should be looking at. Wallace and Salmons both give us scoring and good defense and size out of the 2 and 3 spots and Miller would provide another scoring big man. I think that each one could be had with Wallys expiring contract...

i think wallace could be had, because charlotte seems like they could be on the verge of unloading, but i really think we need to eye our frontcourt... don't get me wrong, wallace would be great, and we've have a solid rotation of mo, delonte, boobie, and wallace, but even with z healthy and playing, i'd like another guy... we had it good last year with that 4 man rotation of z, ben, andy, and joe, it was great...

if we could just get him back, i think we'd be ready to go...

How about adding Gerald Wallace (9,500,00) and Nazr Mohammed (6,049.000) for Wally (13,775,000) and Lorenzen Wright (797,500). Salaries are close, not sure how close they need to be.

Wallace and Nazr have 4 and 3 years remaining on their contracts. That's over $15 million counting against the cap during the 2010 free agent bananza. I was doing the math a few weeks ago ... I think we can afford to have an extra $10 million on the books going into the 2010 offseason. That would allow us to hand out a max deal to anybody we wanted (Bosh, Wade), and then still allow us to keep LeBron through the Bird rule. If we have too much on the books going into 2010, we can still keep Lebron, but wouldn't be able to pull the daily-double.

If we wanted to trade for guys that have more than 2 years remaining ... I'd much rather get Antawn Jamison from Washington at 4 years/9.9 million. A underrated power forward, that plays hard, can score, and would be a good compliment to a defense guy like Wallace or Andy at Center.
