http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090102/ap_on_re_us/yellowstone_quakes_1YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. – More earthquakes are rattling Yellowstone National Park. The small quakes include three more Friday that measured stronger than magnitude 3.0. The University of Utah Seismic Stations say the strongest was 3.5. Several hundred quakes centered under the northern end of Yellowstone Lake have now occurred since Dec. 26. No damage has been reported. Earthquake swarms happen fairly often in Yellowstone. But scientists say it's unusual for so many earthquakes to happen over several days. Yellowstone lies mostly in northwestern Wyoming and is the caldera of a volcano that last erupted 70,000 years ago. Scientists have not concluded what is causing the earthquakes. -------------------------------- Not to be a 'the sky is falling' freak (or, the earth is rising) ... but Yellowstone is a super volcano....and if that thing blows super style it's not too good for mankind. I'm kinda' hoping that it settles back into normalcy some time soon.

Let's hope these are a few burps to let out some pressure , because, if this baby blows, it's all she wrote for most of mankind.

I'd only be nervous if the Browns had a 28-point lead with 1:00 left in the Super Bowl. You KNOW the end is near if that were happening.

right you are, lets hope this "gassing" slowly takes place over the next decade+. because while N America has been known as a melting pot of humanity. the Yellowstone basin is a melting pot of plate tectonics. and these cats have been building for thousands of years

I've read extensively on Yellowstone's caldera for many years. They've been predicting this thing to blow for years. In all honesty, it's a matter of when instead of if. As I recall what I've read, the last time it blew, it buried everything west of the Mississippi in at least 4 feet of volcanic ash. I have no doubt that mankind would survive, but it would drastically change our planet.

Either that or we'd find a way to screw that lead up

I've read a few things as well ... Yellowstone sorta falls into the realm of, modern-scare science. Yellowstone Caldera if I remember right has had eruptions ranging from between 50,000 and 150,000 years. But the last two have been in the 70,000 range, so they've used that to say that it's "due" to erupt while scaring the public into doomsday scenerios, while sticking a hand out for more "research" money to better understand.
It's a hotspot ... it's going to have seizmic actvity. It's been doing that for 70,000 years ... and it could keep doing it for another 70,000 and still fall within it's eruption "window".
like someone said before ... "if we dies ... we dies".

You don't happen to have the newspaper from the one 70,000 years ago do you?

No newspaper, just saw some geography info about the line of volcanic ash that runs throughthe soil layer. I put this volcano up there with large meteors. There's nothing I can do about it, so I'm not going to worry about it.

It only has the potential for that. An eruption there does not automatically equate to doomsday.... like most of the "junk" science shows on Discovery, they simply show you the worst possible outcome in an over-dramatized fashion.

Personally, I think Old Faithful is just a little backed up and needs to let off a little steam

I was at Yellowstone this summer and attended a short seminar on the thermal activity in the park. In short, there's no evidence that the caldera is overdue for an eruption. Even with the fluctuations in seismic activity, there's no indication that an eruption is imminent. They are actually more concerned with a drop in underground temps jand water levels, which if the trend continues will render some of the major thermal features inactive....including Old Faithful.

Supposedly increases in seismic activity is one of the warning signs of the awakening of a volcano. Of course, I'm not saying it's going to blow up any time soon...it's just that I've seen a couple of reports of increased activity at Yellowstone....and Yellowstone isn't just any old hot spot.
Even if we thought it was going to blow...what could we do about it besides hoard canned food and flashlight batteries...

The fact that there are a number of small quakes is a good sign to me. I would be more worried about Yellowstone blowing if it all of a sudden went dormant for an extended period of time.

No, but if you go past GM's cave, I mean house, you may find some old chippings of rock with his handwriting on them.....

Well before Mt St Helens blew her top, there were a lot of earthquakes preceding the eruption...

Thats why I have a few dozen small eruptions each day, to keep the pressure from building up and ending life on this earth as we know it
