I am very concerned about hiring Mangini and letting him pick his buddy Kokinis than hiring Pioli and letting him bring in his guy be it Frentz or McDaniels.

And I feel just the opposite.

In the last twenty years, other than Jimmy Johnson, name one first time NFL HC's to win a SB with their first HC gig?

I've already shown how three out of four of the last SB's were won by NFL HC's on their second gig as an NFL HC.

Or doesn't concrete evidence sway your opinion?

Oh, you want to list "inherritors", not people who actually "turned teams around".

Then add Switzer.

And whatever happenned to those guys?

I haven't seen this perspective before so here it is....

Perhaps we can wait one year for Cowher. How you may ask? Well, Marty is old and probably better suited or more inclined for a GM role. Maybe you get Marty and Bill in the room and propose the following scenario: Bill you want another year before you return to coaching. If I could offer you the position in 2010 would you be interested? Marty, I know your getting up there in years and want more of an executive role but would you be willing to coach for one year and then move into the GM role and let Bill become the HC? What do you think guys? Marty, you're great at working with the people you have, and making the most of them. You could provide the first step to turning around the franchise. Additionally, this would give you first hand experience with the players we have and thus, what we need to turn this around. Bill this scenario now fits into your time frame. What do you think? You worked well with Marty here at the begining of your career, how about doing it again?

Could work....if the two parties were interested.

I like that list!

Cowher walked into a long standing, storied franchise. Sound like us?

Billick. How did he do after that first SB? Better or worse?

George Seifert. Do you count or can you compare guys who "inherrit a dynasty" to our situation?

Barry Switzer. See George Seifert

Mike Holmgren. Now name guys who repeated SB victories after winning the first one with another team.

We don't have a dynasty to hand over to anybody. So Switzer and Siefert aren't very comperable. In fact, they're an outragious comparison given our situation. They built nothing.

We don't have that storied, solid franchise Like The Steelers had for Cowher to work with here. And he's aleady refused the job.

Billick? Once again, didn't he go backwards after winning a SB?

It's a nice list. And they did accomplish what you said.

But look at the last four years. None of them inherrited dynastys and all won SB's. They all built their teams to win a SB. And I didn't have to dig back twenty years to prove that point either, did I?

What Mangini did in his first three years as a HC, was turned a putrid team into a contender. Sounds like he could be OUR Billicheck. I don't see anybody on your list doing that. Not anybody we can get right now that's scheduled for an interview at least.

Pioli, Browns talking, but he may stay put
by Mary Kay Cabot
Saturday January 03, 2009, 9:27 PM

The Browns are continuing their dialogue with Patriots vice president Scott Pioli, but Pioli is still weighing his options, which include staying in New England, a source close to the negotiations told The Plain Dealer.

Pioli is also expected to go through with his interview with the Kansas City Chiefs sometime over the next couple of days. If Pioli takes himself out of the running, the Browns will focus their attention on fired Jets coach Eric Mangini, a source said.

Atlanta president Rich McKay can also get back in the mix now that the Falcons are out of the playoffs following their wild-card loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. McKay postponed his interview with the Browns on Thursday so he could focus on the game, and will thoroughly research the situation before deciding whether or not to formally interview with Browns owner Randy Lerner, a source said.

Two other head coaching candidates -- fired Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz -- are on the backburner for now. Shanahan was contacted by the Browns, but told them he will be on vacation with his family for the next two weeks and will not be interviewed during that time, a source said. If the Browns haven't hired a coach by then, they might still reach out to him.

Their scheduled interview with Schwartz on Saturday was canceled because of a scheduling conflict. He also was scheduled to interview with the Lions Saturday. If the Browns don't interview him by Sunday, they must wait until the Titans are eliminated from the playoffs, or until the week before the Super Bowl to talk to him.

As reported Friday in The Plain Dealer, the Browns were weighing the pros and cons of their top two candidates -- Pioli and Mangini -- knowing they'd probably have to make a choice between the two. Their research showed that landing the right coach was more imperative than finding the right general manager, a source said.

Pioli will require the authority to hire his own head coach, and reportedly favors either Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz or Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who impressed the Browns in his interview Friday. Lerner, who has said he would be "apprehensive" about hiring a college coach, would have to be sold on Ferentz. Likewise, it probably wouldn't be a deal-breaker for Pioli if the Browns didn't want to go the college route.

A source close to Pioli said he headed into the Browns interview with serious reservations. Multiple league sources have pointed to squandered Browns draft picks over the past few years -- including the third, fifth and seventh in 2009. The team is headed for salary cap trouble after giving huge bonuses to free agents over the past several years, and the contracts of a number of players are up after 2009.

One league source noted that the roster is in bad shape after the reign of fired general manager Phil Savage, and that only one current defensive player -- Shaun Rogers -- would be good enough to start for the Ravens or Steelers. Another said neither linebacker Beau Bell nor Martin Rucker, two players the Browns traded up to select in the 2008, will be able to cut it in the NFL.

Mangini, who's been the front-runner among coaching candidates since he interviewed Tuesday night, told the Browns that he had his own general manager in mind, a source said. That person is believed to his close friend George Kokinis, the Ravens' director of pro personnel. The Browns feel that Mangini and Kokinis could be similar to the Bill Belichick/Pioli tandem that has produced three Super Bowl victories in New England, the source said.

If Pioli is "apprehensive" about taking on a challenge ..... then he shouldn't. He should simply remove his name from consideration.

Personally, I'd rather take over a bad team and turn it into a consistent winner. Where are the acolades for taking over a good team .... and keeping it good?

Maybe he doesn't want to risk damaging his reputation built in New England. Who know?

I'm more inclined than ever to think that Mangini and his preferred GM are the way to go. I want someone committed to building a winner ..... not someone afraid of the job.

George who? Raven exec reportedly a front-runner for Browns job

Eric Mangini and George Kokinis are the front-runners to be head coach and general manager of the Browns, ESPN said in a Saturday report.

George who?

The name is surprising as Kokinis, 41, lacks a striking resume. It is not surprising in the sense owner Randy Lerner wants his coach and GM to establish a deep level of trust. Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel were not a marriage made in heaven.

Kokinis, who has worked with the Ravens since they have existed, is a Mangini ally. They last worked together in Baltimore in 1996 but have not drifted apart.

One selling point for Kokinis might be that the Ozzie Newsome-influenced system Savage installed in Cleveland wouldn’t have to be scrapped. In Baltimore his boss was Newsome, whose right-hand man was Savage.

Along the same lines, Cleveland’s defense wouldn’t have to be blown up with Mangini as head coach.

Mangini was on Crennel’s defensive staff when the Patriots won three Super Bowls. Mangini replaced Crennel as coordinator in 2005 after he jumped to Cleveland.

The ESPN report, by Chris Mortensen, merely named Mangini and Kokinis as front-runners, not imminent hires, and used anonymous sources.

Josh McDaniels interviewed with Lerner for the head coaching job Friday. At last year’s Super Bowl, his first as the Pats’ offensive coordinator, McDaniels attracted crowds of national writers, leaving many amazed at how poised he seemed for his young age.

Both Mangini and McDaniels started off in high finance before they landed in football.

Coming out of Wesleyan University in Connecticut, Mangini tried investment banking before he latched onto a semipro team as a coach, at which point he realized he had missed his calling.

McDaniels followed a similar path. Coming out of John Carroll University prepared for a business career, he quickly realized he hated being in a suit instead of on a football field.

Their beginnings in the NFL were only slightly different.

Mangini showed up in Berea one summer, hoping to catch the eye of his fellow Wesleyan alumnus, Belichick. He talked his way into a training camp job.

When camp ended, Belichick wound up giving Mangini a grunt-work job on his football staff. Mangini worked his way up.

McDaniels, like Mangini, hooked up early on with Belichick. He wiggled a grad assistant job under Michigan State’s Nick Saban, who put in a good word with Belichick, who hired him as a bottom-rung employee in 2001.

McDaniels worked like a maniac, and did more than he was asked. By 2002, McDaniels was a full-fledged defensive assistant.

Mangini’s edge is his head coaching experience. McDaniels’ edge, perhaps, is that he offers an attractive change of pace on a team seeking an identity.

Whereas the Browns’ last two head coaches, Butch Davis and Crennel, have defensive backgrounds, McDaniels was offensive coordinator for a record-setting New England attack on a 16-0 team in 2007.

In 2008, McDaniels kept the Patriots near the top of the offensive rankings despite losing Tom Brady.

McDaniels is unusually young, set to turn 33 in April. Mangini, who will turn 38 on Jan. 19, was the youngest head coach in the NFL before he was fired Monday.

Lerner’s choice of head coaches hinges on whether Scott Pioli, Belichick’s right-hand man on the personnel side, agrees to become general manager.

George Kokinis?

According to the Ravens, Kokinis’ current job entails analyzing NFL rosters and coordinating NFL free agency. He has been director of pro personnel the last six years, the first two when Savage was ahead of him in the organization.

I don't know if savage had too much power or too big an ego but after watching the Rats dismantle the Phins how can one argue their methods of organizing or obtaining personnel!

That team has a good of shot as any in getting to the SB! (hurts to say that)

Since Ozzie is out of the question I can't say I'm entirely opposed to seeing what ole Georgie has to offer!

If Mangini is the guy and these guys are buds I can't imagine Mangini bringing in a guy who he has no idea whether he has the right stuff to make him look good or break his next HC gig.

History can be spun to make any argument. Is Crennel now ready to win a Super Bowl now that he was fired from Cleveland?

The issue here is get the right men for the jobs. If Mangini had won a Super Bowl I would consider him bringing in his guy. But when you look at all that is out there on Mangini there are many questions.

Pioli has earned the right from his accomplishments to name his HC. Mangini has not earned the right to name a GM that would be Lerner's job.

In addition I just have a problem with rushing forward with not at least talking to Shanahan (he has won 2 Super Bowls).

Even if they decided against hiring him they could learn something just from his interview. You look at his record overall. I find it disturbing to not a least consider him.

Two completely opposing things come to mind when a complete unknown becomes the front-runner for a job like this:

1. This guy has quickly made a name for himself in league circles, really making himself stand out and he's an outstading candidate because he is a superstar in bloom.
2. This is what we're reduced to because everyone that we really wanted is either already gone, has crazy demands or has turned us down.

Which one is this guy ?

Or...

3. He's a smokescreen to feed to the media sharks while the real negotiations are taking place with a serious candidate.

If you check out the NY media (NY Post and others). Some feel the reasons range from poor adjustments, bad game plans and poor clock management. Wow! does that sound familiar.

Can you provide some links?

It has been stated we want an experienced head coach. Yet Marty, Billick, Shanahan, Cowher, & Holmgren ( 4 out of 5 won Super Bowls) are not on the radar. Some because they say they are not interested others because of timing.

Marty and Cowher have stated they are not interested in coaching in 2009. Holmgren might be in the same boat. And, I am not sure about Billick's interest.

With all of this talk about wanting coaches who are not available makes me wonder if we should also be looking to bring back Vince Lombardi or Chuck Noll. Heck, we can bring back a living ex-coach like John Madden! Man, he would be great in post-game news conferences, especially if he can use the telestrator...

I wonder about Mangini. I like that he runs tough training camps.

I like his approach with the written exams and holding people accountable. It's Belichick's "humble pie" mantra. But I wonder if he's TOO difficult to work with, and if spygate will hurt his ability to hire good coordinators. I like the fact that he dealt with the NY media (which our media is NOTHING compared to). I also wonder how many of those games he's been outcoached in.

I think he did a great coaching job in 2006 (the '06 Jets were a soft team)...not so much in 2007 and '08 was a mixed bag.

Still...McDaniels is too intriguing to me. CoachB...got anymore input you can provide?

I'm not 100% sure that's what he's saying, but I agree with your thoiught.. if any guy doesn't want the challenge, then he's better off removing his name from consideration.

This is like a dream job of sorts.... an owner that has more than enough money and is willing to spend it, a fan base that will go totally nuts for a winner and a city that needs it badly. Not to mention a team with some talent on it.

But you gotta want it and all that goes with it. and that means tough fans and a team in mental distress that also happens to lack a few key pieces to make it real.

And that is possible....there are teams still playing football that prevents us from talking to them...both coaching and FO people....though I think Mangini makes the most sense when you add up background, experience, and age.

Not much to not like.

Report: Parcells to stay with Miami

The Miami Dolphins fell apart on the field Sunday, but the front office apparently won't self destruct this offseason.

Watch highlights from the Baltimore Ravens' 27-9 win over the Miami Dolphins.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells will return to Miami next season and not exercise an escape clause in his contract.

"Bill's going to stay," owner H. Wayne Huizenga said, according to the newspaper. "He told me [Friday] he's going to stay. He said he likes it here."

ESPN's Chris Mortensen first reported that Parcells had an escape clause.

Parcells' contract allows him to leave if Huizenga sells the team, and he would still earn the remainder of his $12 million contract.

Earlier this year, Huizenga agreed to sell 95 percent of the Dolphins to New York developer and team part-owner Stephen Ross. Parcells would have 30 days after the sale to opt out and still collect $9 million.

Mortensen reported last week that a number of teams would be interested in Parcells if he decided to leave Miami.

Parcells turned around the Dolphins in only one season. He took over a team that finished 1-15 last season and guided the Dolphins to an 11-5 record and an AFC East title. Miami was eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday, falling 27-9 to the Baltimore Ravens.

Sources: Mangini had 'compelling' interview

Eric Mangini, fired on Monday by the New York Jets, is emerging as the favorite to become the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns, team and league sources said Saturday.

The Browns have continued their search process, interviewing other candidates, but sources say Mangini had a "compelling" interview and owner Randy Lerner is fascinated with him.

If Mangini gets the job to replace the fired Romeo Crennel, the favorite to become the team's general manager is George Kokinis, who is the director of pro personnel for the Baltimore Ravens, the sources said.

Kokinis and Mangini each were members of the Browns organization when Bill Belichick was coach. Mangini formally joined the staff as an assistant coach in 1995. Kokinis was a scout from 1991 to 1995 before moving with the team to Baltimore.

Scott Pioli, the Patriots' executive vice president of player personnel, has been considered the favorite for the GM job, but sources say his demands were "extreme," and Lerner is hesitant to accept the terms unless there is some level of compromise.

Pioli is scheduled to interview with the Kansas City Chiefs no later than Monday.

If Pioli is hired, the leading head coaching candidates are believed to be Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who also has interviewed with Lerner.

Even though Kokinis would be the leading GM candidate with Mangini as coach, current Browns director of player personnel T.J. McCreight also is in the running.

Lerner's firing of former GM Phil Savage had little or nothing to do with Savage's personnel decisions; Lerner specifically said the dismissal stemmed from a difference in "management style."

Chris Mortensen is a senior NFL analyst for ESPN.

Now we are adding a new name to the potential GM list... the plot thickens

Wow...a personnel guy from Baltimore and a former Defensive Coordinator from New England.

Now that's being original!

As best as I've been able to find out today while waiting for my DVR to buffer as much of the playoff game as possible so I don't have to watch commercials, is that we are not in great cap shape at all. We should be a little less than 5 mil under right now from a 2008 cap of 116 mil. The cap will go up this year to 123 mil and that gives us about 12 mil to play with. 12 mil isn't squat especially since I heard this morning on the NFL channel that you can't carry cap space into 2010. We aren't going to be able to restructure contracts to spread out the cap hit for this year at all. We'll have whatever is naturally going to hit us and the rooks we'll have to sign and you can bet the #5 pick is going to want some cash. It would appear that our FA's chances this year are going to be minimal.

While I can't guarantee the info I've come up with is entirely accurate it's at least a base to play with and if you're a qualified HC candidate are you going to want to walk into cap hell for your first year when your needs to make a winner are greater than your opportunities accomplish the task?

Ammo, I will say that those that I know want Mangini. They want to play for him. They respect what he did in when he was at the Jets and with NE. That is the choice of those I talk to.

As for the spygate deal, that won't affect hiring assts. at all. In fact, it will help. There is serious animosity around the league that NE did such things, not just once but TWICE (some people forget they were did it before and the rule was put in place because of such actions). Mangini is respected by many away from NE for standing up and doing what was right for his team and, to be honest, for the league.

Browns to interview Ravens' Kokinis for GM post
by Mary Kay Cabot Sunday January 04, 2009, 6:06 PM

The Browns have asked for and received permission to interview Ravens director of pro personnel George Kokinis for their general manager vacancy, a league source told the Plain Dealer Sunday.

The interview will take place as soon as possible, the source said. The Ravens defeated the Dolphins, 27-9, on Sunday and will face the Titans Saturday in Tennessee in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Kokinis, who began his NFL career in Cleveland after serving an internship in the team's operations department in 1991, is the No. 1 choice of fired Jets coach Eric Mangini to serve as his right-hand personnel man.

Mangini, as The Plain Dealer reported Friday, is the Browns No. 1 choice for their head coaching vacancy. Mangini and Kokinis became close friends when they worked together in Cleveland in 1994 and 1995. They also spent a year together with the Ravens in 1996.

During his interview with Browns owner Randy Lerner, Mangini identified Kokinis as his top choice to run the personnel side of the business. If Lerner likes what he hears from Kokinis, he'll be ready to hire both of them, a source said.

The Browns have been waiting for Patriots vice president Scott Pioli, originally their top general manager candidate, to decide what he wants to do. But if Lerner becomes as enamored with Kokinis as he is with Mangini, he'll act quickly on the duo, the source said.

All indications are that the Browns will soon end up with the Mangini-Kokinis team.

Kokinis is in his fifth year as Ravens director of pro personnel and his 17th season in the NFL. He works closely with Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome in analyzing NFL rosters and coordinating and evaluating each year's free-agency market. He also helps negotiate contracts for some of the Ravens' draft picks.

Kokinis spent five years with the Browns (1991-95) and has spent the last 12 in Baltimore. He's not only learned from one of the best coaches in the NFL in Bill Belichick, but also one of the best GMs in Newsome.

The Browns view the Mangini-Kokinis team as similar to the Belichick-Pioli team that has won three Super Bowls in New England. Although the Browns liked the passion of Giants' defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, they're enamored with the football acumen and experience of Mangini.

Of the three coaches they've interviewed, only Mangini has head coaching experience, going 23-25 with the Jets and 0-1 in the playoffs. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was impressive, but the Browns really don't want another rookie head coach. The Browns have also pretty much ruled out fired Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

Why? They're sold on Mangini. Now, Kokinis just has to win them over too.

Well, if that's the case, then doesn't that lend a little credence to the Mangini rumor....

Question, if we couldn't interview Mckay till the falcons were out of the running, how come we can interview Kokonis?

Wow...a personnel guy from Baltimore and a former Defensive Coordinator from New England.

Now that's being original!

Could it be that some people would be fired if Pioli came instead of Mangini, which is why you're hearing that they want Mangini?

That's been speculated.

I'm very uneasy about this Kokinis thing...hopefully there's more checks and balances between him and Mangini.

Funny you mention Mangini being more respected due to spygate and not blacklisted...there's speculation out there that says he has been blacklisted. But I'll take the opinion of a coach over some internet hack (as Florio always lovingly refers to himself as).

I'm starting to wish I watched more Jets games so I knew better about Mangini. He seems like a guy who dots all the I's and crosses all the T's and I do like his age and experience as a head coach.

I've read concerns about lack of adjustments in-game which has me concerned. I don't mind his stoic personality....I do think consistency is important...but I've read he doesn't give anyone free passes, not even Lord Favre. He seems like he doesn't mess around...and I know you say Romeo didn't either in private...but I have to believe otherwise.

I think it's because McKay would be taking a lesser role whereas we'd be promoting Kokonis.

Why not hire him? He is a better Candidate than Mangini

That's highly debateable.......

how is it debatateable?

Moochs Record San fran

1997 13-3
1998 12-4
1999 4-12
2000 6-10
2001 12-4
2002 10-6

2 Division Titles
3-4 in the Playoffs

He has playoff expereince, sure things didn't go the way he planned, but he lost playoff games to:

He lost to Holmgren's Packers and the Cowboys both Farve and Aikman in their prime...not an easy task for any coach to win against in the playoffs

They were pretty close games too, I can remember

This is a guy with experience, he has probably lerned a lot from his playoff expereince which is something Mangini don't really have he has been to the playoffs 1 time and lost...atleast Mooch has won a few playoff games

Mooch is the better Candidate and could be here for a long time

granted I will support Mangini if he is hired, but to say he is a better Candidate than Mooch who is an experienced establish NFL HC i just cna't swallow...

You forgot to mention his time in Detroit.

Mariucci was named the Lions' 22nd head coach on February 4, 2003, and was fired on November 28, 2005. He compiled a 15-28 record during that span.

I wanted to gut this article a bit...

I'd like to see McKay and Mangini...I'm growing tired of Pioli..

I'd love to know who this source/genuis is...ROGER BROWN???
Sources are like opinions..everybodies got one..both Rucker/Bell have talent..they might be backups..but I read on several reports Rucker had first round talent..probably was some clown who wanted both and couldn't get neither..

Soooo it appears that Lerner will interview the big Kahoni..then if he's blown away..he hires him , who then in turn hires Mangini..ahhh yes..

While I enjoy mooch on the NFL channel, I'm not sure I want his as a coach but lets not use his time with Detroit against him. Let's face it, Moses couldn't have parted the opposing line with the Detroit offensive front five.

I am surprised we aren't talking more about Chris Polian Vice President of football operation with the Colts or Kevin Colbert the steelers Director of Football Operations as possible GMs.

Tulsa - I am just saying that if you are going to use his prior coaching record as the reason why he is such a good candidate then you can't pick and choose. Maybe it is true that no coach could have had a winning record with those Detroit teams but those SF teams were so talented that almost any coach would have had success there,

I am not saying I am against Mooch. I think an interview would be warrented. I just don't like when people present half the story to prove their point and conveeniently ignore facts that don't quite back up their opinions.

Most of those that I talk to have no fear of losing their jobs. I talk to more than just people on the coaching staff you know

As for him being "black listed", there is alot of things being said about that, but no one I know of says that's true (and I have people I talk to on other teams, not just the Browns).

Yeah I'm getting tired of the Pioli show as well.

I actually like the Rats guy, becuase he seems he could work well with Mangini, and I think Mangini is probably a done deal at this point. These two should have cohesiveness, and share a simular vision, and that's all you can ask for. Randy went about it bass ackwards, but as long as he got to the desired point I'm okay with it.
