As for Lerner, I don't see him as a determent or negative at all. Yes he is inexperienced as an owner but no one can say he has not failed to support those who are running his team
If we have to find a negative, he's really all there is, or so I thought.. and as negatives go, that's really not all that bad.. it woudl be worse to have an owner that doens't know what he doesn't know, and acts as if he does.
But you've brought up another negative.. Fan expectations..
I'll say this to any perspective GM or HC.. If you can't stand the heat, stay out of Clevelands kitchen.

Sources: Mangini had 'compelling' interview By Chris Mortensen ESPN.com (Archive) Updated: January 3, 2009, 2:36 PM ET Comment Email Print Eric Mangini, fired on Monday by the New York Jets, is emerging as the favorite to become the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns, team and league sources said Saturday.
The Browns have continued their search process, interviewing other candidates, but sources say Mangini had a "compelling" interview and owner Randy Lerner is fascinated with him.
If Mangini gets the job to replace the fired Romeo Crennel, the favorite to become the team's general manager is George Kokinis, who is the director of pro personnel for the Baltimore Ravens, the sources said.
Kokinis and Mangini each were members of the Browns organization when Bill Belichick was coach. Mangini formally joined the staff as an assistant coach in 1995. Kokinis was a scout from 1991 to 1995 before moving with the team to Baltimore.
Scott Pioli, the Patriots' executive vice president of player personnel, has been considered the favorite for the GM job, but sources say his demands were "extreme," and Lerner is hesitant to accept the terms unless there is some level of compromise.
Pioli is scheduled to interview with the Kansas City Chiefs no later than Monday.
If Pioli is hired, the leading head coaching candidates are believed to be Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who also has interviewed with Lerner.
Even though Kokinis would be the leading GM candidate with Mangini as coach, current Browns director of player personnel T.J. McCreight also is in the running.
Lerner's firing of former GM Phil Savage had little or nothing to do with Savage's personnel decisions; Lerner specifically said the dismissal stemmed from a difference in "management style."
Chris Mortensen is a senior NFL analyst for ESPN.
Now we are adding a new name to the potential GM list... the plot thickens

My only concern with Mangini is really his loyalty.
To the game? Sounds like it was Bill that was showing a lack of loyalty to the game of football.
Quote:
The stuff with the Pats, i mean if he comes here then decides to leave for a college job what stops him from costing us a draft pick for tampering with a free agent or some bull stuff like that.
Its like hiring the handyman that does great work and he comes real cheap but recently hacked up the family he worked for.
You know, I really do not understand that line of reasoning. So you're more upset at the witness than the violator?
You see, if you break the rules, nobody should tell? Mangini was the HC of the NY Jets. Division rivals. So we see this thing from opposite perspectives.........
Mangini did everything within the confines of the rules to help his team "that he worked for" (loyalty) to gain ground on the Pats. He even cost them a first round draft pick. To me, that shows 100% loyalty to the Jets. That is who he was working for, right?

So when he worked for the Jets, you're saying his real loyalty should have sided with his "former employer" to such a degree he should let them "cheat against him" when he was employed by the Jets at the time?

IMO- He laid himself on the line to help out his CURRENT employer! When a HC is hired here, do you want his loyalty 100% in Cleveland? Or would you rather he be more loyal to someone else?
Just wondering.......
And if we don't cheat, why worry about it? I think they call that "misplaced blame", but I'm not sure......

Pie-hole is pricing himself way out in space..wonder what power made delusions of grandier he has? Apparently if I'm in the ballpark..he wants complete control of football operations and some other things and wants Ferentz... Lerner is hesitant to accept the terms unless there is some level of compromise.
This is what I was pointing to BigWillie..dude wants it his way..probably doesn't want to look at other coaches out there..U can't do that if you want your gig with a team who doesn't want a rookie HC..apparently Pie-Hole thought RL was desperate..or he 's playing cat n mouse, because he's really afraid of stepping out of NE..which he should have just said:"Not interested". Now while I favor Mangini..I know nothing about Kokinis ..the big Kohoni...another Ratbird ..careful...

I got nothing bad to say about Ferentz,, for all I know, he could get the job done.. he's sharp,,no denying that. and he's got some mad coaching skills,, another thing that can't be denied.. we may kick ourselves someday for not getting him.
But for me, I'm still looking for a guy that doesn't have his head in the college game.. thats just me.
But this is looking (as you elude to) more and more like Pioli is putting a gun to a billionaires head... first to flinch buys.. I think when Randy first took over as the owner, he might have flinched. I have a feeling, call me crazy, but this time around, Randy isn't falling for it.
There is one other thing I've kinda been wondering about. is Pioli trying to get what he can upfront because he doesn't think he can hang for the long term on this team..... Don't forget, he was here when the fans were ready to hang his boss, burn his house down, plunder the Belichick vault, all just for cutting Kosar.
Maybe he's covering his butt so to speak.
Just wondering.

Kokinis does not make me feel that good. I don't know, perhaps it is because Savage was from the Ratbirds, but I just don't like it. I would rather have Floyd Reese, to be perfectly honest.
Pioli is wanting too much control, props to Lerner for saying no.

My guess is Shanahan is going to wait and see if Dungy retires and is going to hold his options open until then.

Apparently, Mangini tried to bring him in 2006 to the Jets, but ultimately the Ravens blocked it because it was not a promotion. Here is one of the articles from that time frame http://bal.scout.com/2/498040.htmlRaven' Kokinis linked to Jets By Aaron Wilson Staff Writer Posted Feb 8, 2006 OWINGS MILLS -- Baltimore Ravens director of pro personnel George Kokinis is reportedly leaving the organization to run the New York Jets’ scouting department where he’ll work in tandem with longtime friend and new Jets head coach Eric Mangini. The NFL Network reported Tuesday that Kokinis will be leaving the Ravens after 15 seasons to help overhaul the Jets. Jets spokesman Ron Colangelo didn’t confirm or deny the report Tuesday night. Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne said he wasn’t aware of the report or any news regarding Kokinis. Kokinis didn’t return telephone calls at his office and home. Based on professional and personal connections, it makes sense that Kokinis has been linked to the Jets. He has been good friends with Mangini -- a former Cleveland Browns and Ravens assistant -- for several years. Both grew up in Connecticut and got their start in the NFL in Cleveland under New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. With Mike Tannenbaum’s promotion to Jets general manager Tuesday and Terry Bradway stepping aside into a “consultant” role, it leaves a scouting void in New York. Tannebaum has a law degree from Tulane and is regarded as a salary-cap expert, but doesn't have a track record in player evaluation. Like Mangini and Kokinis, Tannenbaum broke into the league under Belichick in Cleveland. He was a player personnel assistant. With Mangini, 35, Tannenbaum, 36, and Kokinis, 38, the Jets would feature the youngest power structure in NFL history. Kokinis has assisted general manager Ozzie Newsome in signing several high-profile players over the years, including wide receiver Derrick Mason and cornerback Samari Rolle last spring. If Kokinis leaves after three years in charge of pro personnel after James Harris’ departure to the Jacksonville Jaguars, it’s believed that Ravens assistant director of pro personnel Vince Newsome would be a strong candidate to replace him.

My only concern with Mangini is this:
I believe there is a lot of merit to second time HCs (or second time anythings) seeing much greater success than their first stab at the job. This normally happens when an individual is intelligent and humble enough to learn from their mistakes and take the necessary steps needed not to make those mistakes again. And when a person has that makeup, it means good things BUT not until after they've had some time to reflect.
What I'm getting at here is that although Mangini was fairly successful as JETS coach, he still made mistakes and was still responsible in some form for their collapse this season. Has he reflected back on what his weaknesses are and what he needs to do to make himself better?
He's not as proven as a guy like Shanahan which is why I want him first. But I do like the fact that he has experience and was somewhat successful in his brief time as HC. Maybe a year or two away from the game would give him a chance to reflect, come back energized, and ready to atone for his shortcomings. That's how people truly become great.
I just kind of wish we were getting him after a year or so off instead of coming straight from the JETS. I don't want him to be the same person the JETS had ... I want him to be an improved version.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Especially our anointed overspeakers. We got a few lousy mouths for the media. Canadia is hiring. So are we decide which side of the border is better for your career.

Or something like that.......
I understand dude, I really see your point of view. In McDaniels favor is that Quinn is a much better QB then couch was, he also has a lot more to work with. I've accepted that Quinn most likely will be 'the' guy so we may as well have somebody who can help him be as good as he can be.

PIOLI TAKING A PAGE FROM PARCELLS? Posted by Mike Florio on January 3, 2009, 5:05 p.m. Despite a report that the Browns could hire Eric Mangini to coach the team and George Kokinis to serve as the G.M., there continues to be a strong sense in league circles that Pats V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli has first crack at either the Cleveland or the Kansas City jobs.
It’s prompting some league insiders to conclude that Pioli has learned a thing or two about leverage from his father-in-law, Bill Parcells.
Last year, Parcells parlayed the interest of the Falcons into a sweetheart deal with the Dolphins, which will allow Parcells to collect the balance of the four-year deal and become a free agent if/when owner Wayne Huizenga relinquishes control of the team to Stephen Ross.
And so it could be that the Mangini-Kokinis pairing is being floated not as a preference to Pioli, but as an alternative. If, after all, Pioli is maximizing his leverage by creating opportunities in two cities, one or both of the teams in question need to demonstrate that they have other options.
But, really, is Mangini-Kokinis a realistic “Plan B” for the Browns?
As one league source put it, “Browns fans will revolt. It’s like Groundhog Day.”
And the source is right. Mangini is a former defensive coordinator in New England; Romeo Crennel was a former defensive coordinator in New England. Kokinis is a key executive with the Ravens; Savage was a key executive with the Ravens.
Though, in reality, Mangini and Kokinis likely will be able to work together far more effectively than Crennel and Savage, Browns fans are looking for change. And there are too many similarities between Crennel-Savage and Mangini-Kokinis to get the locals to regard such an approach as sufficiently different from that through which they’ve suffered for four seasons.

Which once was the exact same sentiment with Palmer. Do you seriously believe a 32 year old without NFL HC experience can handle the ego's of NFL players?
You see, I'm not saying it might not help "BQ". But the probem is, we have a 53 man roster. Not just "BQ".

I agree. But isn't your reasoning just a tad scewed? You went from one coach in Marty with TONS of experience in "turning things around on an NFL team", to a guy with none!

That's why I favor Mangini. Enough experience to show "he gets it", but young enough to be a long term solution. A happy medium that should excite most I would think. Youth combined with experience.
It must be the moderate in me.

If Pioli had the resume Parcells has, that would be one thing. But he doesn't. Lerner got fooled by a "Pioli type" before in Savage.
If he gets fooled yet once again, we will all be worse off for it.
From my understanding, it was a VERY long negotiation process with Pioli, and Lerner seemed to make it clear he was asking for too much publicly. So I'd say the ball is in Pioli's court to give in to demands.
Or are you saying Lerner will publicly say one thing, then turn right around and do the opposite? I highly doubt it.

I originally stated that I was warming up to him, mainly because he's one of the folks interviewed. I'm not saying he's the best guy. I like mangenous also.

I don't think he's very much at all like Butch Davis.. listen to both speak and you can see that Ferentz is, IMO, a smarter guy...
Be that as it may, I still don't want a college coach as our HC... I just don't see a big enough history of success....

can't wait to find out....

OC's boss isn't as important as one of those working under the HC? Some of these posts crack me up!
perhaps you should re-read what I typed so here it is: I love the fact that he thinks like a QB but I think that's more important as an OC than the actual HC though. translation - thinking like a QB for an OC is more important (to me) than a HC that thinks like a QB. Therefore DC's can be HC's.

Take this article posted last week... COULD QUIET CHANGE TO RULES ALLOW PATS TO BLOCK PIOLI MOVE? Quote:
Pioli has toiled away in relative anonymity for nine seasons in New England, and if he wants to explore other opportunities, he should be given a chance to do so.
Strange - Pioli has been at the top of the list for many years... Just because someone is good at combing the Internet for articles and stories, does not make that person qualified to write stories with unspecified sources.

One thing about it if Randy wants to interview McKay, he should be available now, if he should decide he is interested.
Hope springs eternal in the heart of a true Browns fan. GO BROWNS!!!!!

Or are you saying Lerner will publicly say one thing, then turn right around and do the opposite? I highly doubt it.
JMHO
No what i was saying was he did learn from daddy in law....and maybe he wanted a built in clause for an out without losing any pay....hence RL said noone would agree to that...jmo

Funny you should say that.. I was sitting here watching the Zona/.ATL game and thinking,,, i want ATL to win, but dang,, if they do, it will postpone the mcKay interview..
I guess he's free to interview now. perhaps on his way back to Atl he can take a detour and head for Cleveland where he can sit down with Randy and tour the facility...
I think it's a GRAND idea...

What will the fans do when the HC and the GM Decide Anderson is the better Qb over Quinn Will the fans burn the city of Cleveland down? sorry had to throw that out there...laugh please. Even though I like Anderson what will be will be and I will get behind whoever the management picks

I am not so sure about McKay, I mean...Atlanta really isn't a proven winning organization, look at their team. Is that a team that you want your team to be built like?...not me.

j/c Interesting read. Pioli, Browns talking, but he may stay put by Mary Kay Cabot Saturday January 03, 2009, 9:27 PM Stephen Savoia/Associated Press Patriots vice president Scott Pioli is expected to decide whether to pursue leaving New England following an upcoming interview with Kansas City. The Browns are continuing their dialogue with Patriots vice president Scott Pioli, but Pioli is still weighing his options, which include staying in New England, a source close to the negotiations told The Plain Dealer. Pioli is also expected to go through with his interview with the Kansas City Chiefs sometime over the next couple of days. If Pioli takes himself out of the running, the Browns will focus their attention on fired Jets coach Eric Mangini, a source said. Atlanta president Rich McKay can also get back in the mix now that the Falcons are out of the playoffs following their wild-card loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. McKay postponed his interview with the Browns on Thursday so he could focus on the game, and will thoroughly research the situation before deciding whether or not to formally interview with Browns owner Randy Lerner, a source said. Two other head coaching candidates -- fired Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz -- are on the backburner for now. Shanahan was contacted by the Browns, but told them he will be on vacation with his family for the next two weeks and will not be interviewed during that time, a source said. If the Browns haven't hired a coach by then, they might still reach out to him. Their scheduled interview with Schwartz on Saturday was canceled because of a scheduling conflict. He also was scheduled to interview with the Lions Saturday. If the Browns don't interview him by Sunday, they must wait until the Titans are eliminated from the playoffs, or until the week before the Super Bowl to talk to him. As reported Friday in The Plain Dealer, the Browns were weighing the pros and cons of their top two candidates -- Pioli and Mangini -- knowing they'd probably have to make a choice between the two. Their research showed that landing the right coach was more imperative than finding the right general manager, a source said. Pioli will require the authority to hire his own head coach, and reportedly favors either Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz or Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who impressed the Browns in his interview Friday. Lerner, who has said he would be "apprehensive" about hiring a college coach, would have to be sold on Ferentz. Likewise, it probably wouldn't be a deal-breaker for Pioli if the Browns didn't want to go the college route. A source close to Pioli said he headed into the Browns interview with serious reservations. Multiple league sources have pointed to squandered Browns draft picks over the past few years -- including the third, fifth and seventh in 2009. The team is headed for salary cap trouble after giving huge bonuses to free agents over the past several years, and the contracts of a number of players are up after 2009. One league source noted that the roster is in bad shape after the reign of fired general manager Phil Savage, and that only one current defensive player -- Shaun Rogers -- would be good enough to start for the Ravens or Steelers. Another said neither linebacker Beau Bell nor Martin Rucker, two players the Browns traded up to select in the 2008, will be able to cut it in the NFL. Mangini, who's been the front-runner among coaching candidates since he interviewed Tuesday night, told the Browns that he had his own general manager in mind, a source said. That person is believed to his close friend George Kokinis, the Ravens' director of pro personnel. The Browns feel that Mangini and Kokinis could be similar to the Bill Belichick/Pioli tandem that has produced three Super Bowl victories in New England, the source said. Pioli Browns talking but..
