Anyone in touch with current college student humor would laugh at this (including myself)... and this guy is a student.

Actually, at his age I was senior in college, had a son and an ex wife, and worked 25 hours a week. Angel? No. Respectful? Yeah. And I am to this day. See, I didn't get passes cause I was a stud athlete. Respect. You cannot go wrong giving people respect. Ray apparently felt he was above respect, or maybe he was just feeling untouchable, or maybe it was just something he did to make him look "good". Who knows?

Respect. If you disagree with respecting people, feel free to say it here. Maybe some day your sister or mother will be disrespected, but of course, it will just be a "frat boy having fun", right?

Arch dude, you sound like an un-fun person. Maybe cause you had so much responsibility at a young age but you need to stop being so judgmental..

I agree with you Arch... I also believe in respect, had no idea that it made me an uptight do-gooder. It's the way I was brought up, and I have no problem being fun while being respectful to those around me. Maualuga didn't show respect here, what else can you say? It doesn't mean he's classless, doesn't mean he's low character guy... It just means he isn't like me. That's not a problem, just like it isn't a problem that I don't find the video very entertaining.

Though it is nice to see Andrews again...

Most of my friends would tell you I have too much fun. Not a single person that knows me would say I don't show respect to others. Fun and respect does not have to be mutally exclusive. They can go hand in hand.

Would you care for me, or any guy, to come up behind your mother and do that dance while she's getting ready to work?

Oh, loki, I'm not sure where you can call me judgmental. Class is class, respect is respect. If I call out someone that shows no class and shows no respect, I'm judgmental? Please.

Let me just say, I joined the US Army at 18, if at 21 while still in ARMY a reporter was on base and I did such a thing the repercussions I would have received would have been tremendous. But as an elite athlete everyone gives him a free pass, a college kid just having some fun.

I bet if while talking to his mother or sister or cousin or aunt if someone did this to them Rey wouldn't have found it so funny. I'll also bet he would have went after whoever did it!

You probably walked to school up hill both ways with no shoes in the snow too....

Get over it.

Listen, a woman should never be disrespected and just because Erin Andrews is playboys "sexiest sideline reporter" it doesn't mean she deserves to be disrespected...

But...

Rey wasn't being disrespectful. Your being hard on the guy because I don't know if your jealous he's a stud athlete or if you hate college kids who didn't have your same situation that kind of thrust you into growing up, or maybe you just hate stereotypical frat boys, or SoCal boys, or rich kids or what??? I don't know..I mean he had a little fun...Hell i'm jealous he got to get that close to her But seriously, settle down...he didn't Joe Namath her like she was Suzy Cobler...He didn't cross any lines, he just had a little fun. Trust me, It's no coincidence ESPN doesn't put Shelly Smith or Linda Cohn as a college sideline reporter...ESPN knows what they are doing putting her down there and she knows and obviously accepts what she is going to take each week having her job....
I would imagine its a non issue with her considering she puts up with 60000+ college kids probably mostly drunk males 18-22 in a stadium every saturday from August till January.

Relax arch. Wait atleast till you see the breaking news she is pressing sexual harassment charges against Rey.

Arch, I'm pretty sure I was raised in a similar manner to you, but I have to admit, if this was my mom or my sister or my daughter and she was on the sidelines of a football game and this happened, as long as he didn't touch, grope, kiss, or proposition her, I'd still think it was pretty funny.

It would get him fired in the business world and fined at the next level.

Bad judgement.

Yea well if he won a proposal and stood over his competition and pointed in their face and called them names that would get him fired in the business world too, yet for some reason we think thats just "showing fire" on the football field... and I don't know about you, but my boss has never got in my face after a presentation and berated me for making a mistake in front of all my co-workers because that would be lousy management technique and HE could likely be fired, but that's perfectly acceptable for a coach... and, oh by the way, we don't have any scantily clad cheerleaders in my office cheering me on to do a better job (wish we did, but then we'd be accused of treating women like objects)...

Football is entertainment, office work is office work... believe it or not, they are just a tad different.

Just out of curiosity, has Erin Andrews issued any kind of statement about this, requested an apology from Maualuga or his family or the football team or the University? My guess is she has not, why, because she is over it.... it's more than likely a non-issue to her.... but I'm sure she appreciates all of this righteous indignation on her behalf.

He's a college kid. He's a male. She's a very attractive female.

There are some very old people and/or old thinkers around here.

For the record, I AM old, but take NO offense. She is an extremely attractive female.

But to suggest that because I am old, or an old thinker that I didn't think it was either funny or entertaining ? HAH !!

It was both, from THAT side of the fence. I apologize to anyone thinking it's a big deal to me, because it isn't, and I would still draft him. But he'd better be able to accept the fact that granting him employment and it's inherent millionaire status would come with an expectation of future maturing as a human being.

As I posted earlier and someone else mentioned, it would be interesting to hear what Erin has to say.

Judgement is the better part of valor; he could have pulled off this stunt in a more acceptable fashion, and I would be howling about it laughing.

He NEVER touches her and if you think that's grinding, you need to go to a club... or a junior high dance.

Not only that, he does it for all of a second and a half...

No I didn't. I lived in cheap housing within walking distance. I DID go to college in northeast Indiana though. However, I did ride my bike to work in the snow, cold, heat, rain etc. Oh, and here's the best part, I took my son to the baby sitter on my bike. In the same weather. (the sitter was about 3/4 of a mile from where I lived if it matters)

Where should I even start in regards to this? Jealous of him? No. I give him kudos for playing at a major college. That takes a lot of time and work. Jealous that he doesn't have the same situation I had? Not at all. In fact, I'm glad he doesn't, in the same way I'm glad my son doesn't. I'm happy for both of them in that regard. Basically, it means they were/are smarter than I was.

Hate frat boys? I only knew 1, and he was and is one of my best friends. Hate rich kids? I don't know if Ray (rey, don't know how to spell his name) has parents that have money or not, and I don't care.

According to.....?

Here's my problem - it's the dumbing down of the citizens. It's the "hey, I have a right to ....", it's the "you can't push your morals on me", it's the "look what I can do" attitude of too many people.

So call me an old fuddy duddy. I'm 40. Maybe I deserve it.

If a stranger does that to my wife, we instantly have a problem. When my daughter is in jr. high and doesn't ask for nor initiate that type of behaviour? Yeah, there will be some discussion, and there will be an apology.

I suppose that's why we can look at the same thing and reach 2 different conclusions... I watch the video and it doesn't say any of those things.. it says, football is supposed to be fun, it's entertainment, nobody was harmed.. this ranks right up there with mildly taunting a guy after laying him out or a little endzone celebration or LeBron getting baby powder on the people at the scoring table by throwing it up in the air.. something for some fans to see and cheer, jeer, laugh at, whatever...

Calling the President foul names, sexually harrasing an employee, telling racist jokes.. those things are disrespectful.... but this is football, it's supposed to be lighthearted and fun..... Heck, I was more offended when the Tennessee women's basketball team went to the Whitehouse and wore flip flops.

You're right - football is football. What happens on the field is a touch different than what happens off the field. This happened off the field. This happened to a person trying to do their job.

Look, the act in and of itself is nothing. At least to me. The mental attitude of the guy doing it is where my issue is.

See DC, that's the thing--it's all introspective definition. What hurts or offends one, doesn't the other. I still laugh to hear Imus use the phrase "nappy-headed-hoe," never thinking how ingracious it might be to say that, but that it was "funny" because I had never heard dreadlocks called that before,....the man lost his job.

This is the same thing,....to me. Is Rey going to lose his job ?? Most probably not. (and he shouldn't).

Well lets stop all touchdown celebrations...well all celebrations period...I mean those offend me cause they are all terrible dancers...Also they are disrespecting those other football players.. CRUCIFY THEM...CRUCIFY THEM . We don't want any of them cause they are mean, and have fun at others expense

Dude if I was Erin Andrews and Rey did that I would laugh....I have a very relaxed personality and am 23 in college. With you're attitude you're going to have a heart attack.

EDIT: Also Comparing A reporter to my mom on a street is apples to tomatoes...and Also you don't call your country a [removed for being inappropriate] don't call a fraternity a frat. I am a fraternity member.

USC's Rey Maualuga apologizes to ESPN's Erin Andrews, school says

8:39 PM, January 6, 2009

EDITOR'S NOTE: This post was originally published with a video of the incident for which Maualuga apologized. The video was first published on "All Things Trojan," which described the action in the video as dancing. The video is not appropriate based on Times' standards and practices and should not have been posted; it has been removed from both blogs.

Responding to inquiries from media outlets, USC issued a statement regarding a video that captured linebacker Rey Maualuga dancing behind unsuspecting ESPN sideline reporter Erin Andrews before the Rose Bowl game.

"The situation was addressed immediately," the statement said. "Rey both e-mailed and spoke to Erin and apologized to her. He realized he made a mistake and used poor judgment. He deeply regrets his actions."

Andrews has declined to comment. Maualuga could not be reached for comment.

"We appreciate the apology," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said.

I agree OoooRah... so for now, everybody is being offended on behalf of Erin Andrews.. if she comes out and says it was offensive or that he touched her, then Rey should apologize (which according to my previous post, he already did).. until she's upset about it (and we may never know if she was), I'm not going to be upset about it.

Now the clarity of the matter comes to the surface. Those of you who thought it was funny probably also knew it was wrong, as USC and Rey have now acknowledged.

It WAS still funny, but is was a real lack of judgement.

I was surprised to learn this happened BEFORE the game,...not that it matters.

Growing up means having the ability to pay your bills. Growing up means the opportunity to PLAY on your lawn, you know, the lawn you OWN. The lawn you pay taxes on.

Growing up means you can invite people over to play on your lawn. People that laugh and have a good time. Growing up means you don't go up behind the women and ...............

Play on my lawn? You need to back up before you look any sillier. I pull my daughter and her friends on sleds all the time (when there's snow) in the winter.

Ah, responding to you on this subject is very similar to using a shotgun to kill a fly.

So you're saying that Arch is Clint Eastwood? If that's the case, it might be a wise decision to tone it down a notch.

That being said, I'm 20 years old, a college student, and an non-religous person, and still see that this is not respectful of Erin Andrews. My main philosphy in life is "whatever floats your boat but doesn't sink mine or anyone elses'". Yeah I chuckled at first when I saw this, but you don't just go up behind a girl, clearly too close and invasive of the space bubble and do an inappropriate dance like that. Take then into consideration she's at work and had to deal with that distraction and wonder what this six foot two, 260 pound guy was doing behind her? Not exactly something she might feel comfortable with....

Yes, it is a bit more tame and not THE most offensive thing I've ever seen. It falls under the category of something far less serious than an actual crime, but is just not all that right. At the end of the day, this definitely was in bad taste, as Rey woudln't have had to apologize if it wasn't....
