I think Spags has HC potential...but Randy wants the HC to be the top dawg instead of the GM...whatever Randy. It's a stretch to believe Spags can can run an NFL team.

If we could bring a GM, who is the top dawg, and he wants Spags...all for it. I'm for anything that involves bringing in a real football person who evaluates and not Randy.

well lets see. Interviewed Pioli and his choice.

Interviewed Mangini and waiting to interview his choice.

Interviewed Spagnuolo and wanting to interview Heckert.

I dont see any pattern except for wanting 2 guys that can work together. I like his thought process. I know he is taking heat but I like the way Lerner has gone about this entire situation.

You know Mourg you are right. The Heckert interview really brings that thought some clarity.

Pioli/McDanial
Kokinis/Mangini
Heckert/Spagnuolo

Great observation on your part.

And as far as the Lerner process goes, my issue is not so much with him but with how the media is portraying things to be. We only know what the media tell us and not what is actually going on. And they tell us he immediately jumped on the Mangini bandwagon. But we do not know that to be true. Sounds to me like he is exploring all his options. But then again I am only goiong on what the media tells us.

If he actually does that - compiles 3 sets of HC/GM candidates (Pioli/Ferentz or McDaniels, Mangini/Kokinis, Spagnuolo/Heckert) and sits down, evaluates each pairing and determines which combination is the best for this organization and the direction of the franchise, then my frustration with this process goes way down.

I don't know that that's actually what's going to happen (because that would mean all the Mangini reports are premature and it's really hard for so many to screw something like that up) but that's certainly a more detailed and legitimate way to approach things than it seems to be at the moment. If this is actually his thinking, I won't take any more issue with how he's going about things.

What personnel decisions has Coach made that has you swinging from his jock so hard? Sorry, but his resume in peronnel choices is far from stellar.

Where did you get this information that Lerner wants the HC to be in control of everything? Link or a source? I have YET to see a link stating that and havne't heard such nonsense either. He wants a COACH AND GM WITH THE SAME PHILOSPHIES. You know, that actually works together. That doesn't guarantee success, but it sure ups the chances for it.

I disagree with this. It's not hard for a lot of people to mess something up when most people's "sources" are other people in the media! It's a gigantic circle, one person extrapolates, another guesses based on that, a third reports it and BOOM. Heck, if the 2000 Presidential Election (an event only slightly more important than the Browns chosing a GM and coach) could be reported wrongly, anything could be.

BROWNS TO INTERVIEW HECKERT

The Cleveland Browns, according to a league source, have asked the Eagles for permission to talk to Tom Heckert about their vacant general manager job. Another league source said a specific time and date has not been established for the interview.

Heckert, who has been with the Eagles since May of 2001 and has held the title of general manager since 2006,

One thing I'm wondering: for all those people freaking out that Learner hasn't done his homework and Mangini is set in stone... why hasn't he been hired yet, then?

Seriously.

Probably because of what Lerner and everyone else has been talking about the whole time- the coach and GM being on the same page.

Mangini allegedly wants Kokinis as his GM, and since we have be unable to talk to him yet, Lerner is probably going to hold off. Remember, it takes more than one piece to put a puzzle together, otherwise, you have an incomplete picture that just doesn't look right.

Barring something I don't know, Heckert would become President and GM of the Browns. Or something along those lines.

is anyone else starting to think that mangini as a "sure thing" is just blowing smoke? why would we leak that we want the one coach that no one else wants...yet continue interviewing? not saying spurano/heckert are the real candidates or anything but i doubt any of us complain if that's who we end up hiring.

Something that could support Kokinis.

Savage's strength coming in was the draft and college personnel. It was not acquiring free agents or making trades...which can explain why our free agent acquisitions and trades have been largely hit or miss.

Kokinis has experience with trades and free agent acquisitions as that's his specialty.

Now, the college scouting system in place is the same as the one the Ravens run. That wouldn't change under Kokinis and would provide *gasp* continuity in this front office...or at least some semblance of it.

Could it be that our drafts haven't been as poor as they seem, and it's really been our free agent classes that have been so "hailed?"

Cuz I DO think there's some legit talent on this team...how much remains to be seen...I don't think the pieces have been used adequately, or the pieces exactly fit right. (i.e. Jamal Lewis running behind a line that would best fit a runningback in the zone-running scat back mode, Stallworth in a downfield offense over an offense where the ball gets in his hands and he runs with it after the catch, etc.)

I really don't know...most of Savage's moves have made sense to me in the past but they don't now...sometimes I thought he didn't do enough (receiver, corner, etc) and that hurt us.

Maybe the real difference between Savage and Kokinis is that Kokinis has been brought up with experience piecing a team together, while Savage's upbringing was more focused on scouting players and giving grades on players. In other words, he was prone to making mistakes by making decisions that weren't best for piecing together a team.

Why is he prone to those mistakes? Maybe because he wasn't in on all those meetings with Ozzie and the rest of the staff on piecing together a team concept...despite his title previous to Browns GM (perhaps Ozzie gave him permission to scout often and not sit in on those FA meetings because Savage was busy scouting college players).

Long story short: Kokinis would let the scouts (who he likely has ties to because Savage brought a lot of them from Baltimore) bring him the scouting reports and use that information on draft day along with Mangini. In other words, perhaps his drafts would not be total disasters along the lines of Butch Davis because he has enough knowledge of the Ozzie school of drafting AND the Ozzie school of free agents/players already in the league?

I'm just thinking out loud here trying to sell myself on this Kokinis thing. It's a harder sell to me than Mangini.

EDIT: and a BIG point I would like to make...we all talk about depth in a 53 man roster. Given the high amount of turnover on EVERY team EVERY year...is FA acquisition more important than the draft? By FA acquisition, I'm not talking "making a Redskins-style splash every year", but in fact making those "back nine" signings that float around the league from team to team? (think a guy like Nick Eason fitting right in in Pittsburgh yet we've jettisoned him, or a guy like Hank Poteat floating around the league in various backup roles because they fit a certain system) Really, it's probably equal. But while you always look for a draft class to find gems...maybe the big key to a draft his having those guys who can fill in those key roles for a couple seasons because they fit a system but won't pan out to be truly special? Perhaps Savage was obsessed with hitting every one of his picks that he lost the sight that fielding a good TEAM goes beyond trying to hit on every draft pick? (hence why it's so important to acquire many draft picks...not only to find hits but to find warm bodies who can fill key roles)

I really don't know...I'm trying to speculate as best I can.

Kinda/sorta...lol...

Interviewing Mcdaniels could fall into Pioli's choice...But it's widely known Ferentz is da' man with Pioli...I seriously doubt we even look Ferentz way...I have no problem with him except the fact he hasn't been around the NFL for YEARS...That bothers me...Pioli bothers me because of these reports and I QUOTE..."He's asking for Power that NO NFL Team would agree to"...What that is exactly we just don't know...Let someone else give it to em'...

Lerner's takin' alot of heat about all this Mangini stuff...But if you're INTERVIEWING someone for either GM or HC...You best be opening the lines of communication as to WHO WOULD BE A PREFERENCE for you to work closely with...Without that conversation that particular interview is USELESS...U don't go hiring a GM or a HC and say "Have At It Baby...Good luck...That IMFUO is IRRESPONSIBLE Ownership...

Spectre it appears has his panties in a wad because the name Kokinis came up during said interview with Mangini...I see zero problem with this...And it goes back to the interview question and conversation about WHO WOULD BE A PREFERENCE for you to work closely with...That is a conversation that SHOULD go down...And should be a LONG WINDED ONE...

So Mangini mentions Kokinis and everyone gets fired up because they take it as Lerner giving Mangini control he shouldn't have???...BS...It's called trying to find individuals in KEY roles of this new regime that are going to have a good chance of working well together from the start...We might not be in this position if this sorta thing was done 4 years ago...

Yeah...Lerner HAS LEARNED A FEW THINGS I'd say...

Hell...Nuttin says Kokinis is gonna impress Lerner one bit come interview time...And I'm POSITIVE that Mangini's not dumb enuff to shove it down Lerner's throat that it's Kokinis or NUTTIN'...That's the quickest way to have said Owner tell u "Well it sounds like NUTTIN' to me"...

Lerner's going about this beautifully and hasn't jumped the gun one bit with a knee-jerk hiring...Now we wait and hope the Iggles and Slavens both LOSE this weekend...Which I might add is HIGHLY LIKELY...

I completely understand the desire for Heckert, an experienced GM. But why the lovefest for Spagnuolo, another rookie head coach?? Everybody talks about doing SOMETHING DIFFERENT this time. Assuming our options are Pioli-Ferentz/McDaniels, Heckert-Spagnoulo, or Kokinis-Mangini, and considering we haven't hired an experienced head coach since 1971, I think the Mangini/Kokinis combo is about as 'different' as we can get right now. If we must choose, I think I would much rather have the experienced head coach than the experienced GM at this point. Just my .02.

I agree and give Lerner 'A" for effort.

No matter how it turns out, he can't be accused of making a knee jerk decision in some uneducated fashion.

He has researched which combination tends to work best and has work towards that end by seeking out all the best candidates and not just appointing the most popular guy or some buddy.

He may still get it wrong because a big part of the equation is luck, but any failure won't be due to lack of preparation.

Who knows....maybe he wants to be able to fire the owner??

I think these reported demands are a signal he really doesn't want the job here unless it is just a lock down situation.....probably some sort of ironclad guarantee in the contract or some sort of upfront cash bonus.

And beyond that now that we're interested in talking to Heckert...Who's to say who suggested him???

As far as we know Mangini may have mentioned Heckert also...We just don't know...And quite frankly never will...

We need to sit tight and let this thing play out...

Everyone reads WAAAAAY 2 much into this stuff...Including these ding-dong media people...

If u ask me...Ole' Randy has a major jump on everyone else when it comes to this...Noone else is even close to having spoke to as many as he has already...

Chris Mortensen said on the Tirico / Van Pelt ESPN radio show yesterday talking about Lerner and Piloi, about the report of Pioli extreme demands, that he has since spoken to someone in Cleveland who says those reports are simply not true they never got to that point and Scott was nothing but professional in their interview and the only aspect that could be considered extreme would be that Scott has to be in control of football operations for him to be hired away from the Patriots. Therefore they never got to that level, they never discussed salary or finances and it's really a case of Lerner falling in love with Mangini more than anything that Poili has done or said to them.

Then again, Schefter is reporting we just requested for permission to interview Tom Heckert of Philadelphia. Maybe Mangini/Kokinis is only a 95% lock.

I've been kinda trying to figure out how it was a lock for Mangini/Kokonis when all we have to go on is reports in the press and they seem to change daily. In other words, none of it seems totally reliable. Mostly speculation.

I just keep trying to be patient,...but it is hard.

We can only wait for the press conference to hear it from Randy. Hopefully it's a sign that he's trying to do a most thorough and completely perfect process.

Just an article that Grossi wrote that explains a few things... Just an interesting read..

Analysis: Tracking Eric Mangini's path toward the Browns
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter Tuesday January 06, 2009, 6:52 PM

John Russell/Associated Press
Eric Mangini was not a vocal supporter of Brett Favre's signing with the Jets, although it was reported that after New York completed its late-season collapse, Favre told Mangini it was the players' fault, and not the coach's.
More Browns

Browns can interview Eagles GM Heckert
Pluto chat: Terry talks about the Browns coach, GM searches
Who's your choice for coach?
Show us your Browns tailgating and party photos

Eric Mangini was fired as New York Jets coach the day after the team completed a free-fall from first place to third in the AFC East and out of the playoffs.
Before the day was over, Mangini was on the fast track to becoming the front-runner to replace Romeo Crennel as the next Browns coach.

Now that Mangini's hiring appears inevitable, if not imminent, a refresher course on the one-time Browns ballboy is in order.

Question: How did Mangini go from "Mangenius" to "you're fired" in three seasons, two in which the Jets had a winning record?

Answer: Jets owner Woody Johnson doled out about $160 million in future contracts for veteran acquisitions in 2008 to get the team over the top while simultaneously pushing sales of ultra-expensive luxury seats in the new Meadowlands stadium under construction. The trade for disgruntled Green Bay quarterback icon Brett Favre was the final act in getting the team to the playoffs. When the Jets failed, Mangini took the fall.

Q: Is that all?

A: Mangini was not gung-ho about the Favre trade and seemed intimidated by him. Favre had his run of the place and other players took note. Mangini's defense failed him in the playoff stretch. He was heavily criticized for some game decisions that backfired. He also was hard on his players and on his coaches. He was not the most popular man in the Jets complex by the end of his time.

Q: So why did he appeal so much to Lerner?

A: Mangini was Crennel's first choice to be defensive coordinator in 2005, so there was some familiarity with him from that time. More importantly, Lerner has been convinced that the Browns needed an experienced head coach, one capable of learning from his failures in his first job. Mangini is a grinder who works his players hard and Lerner felt that type of coach definitely was needed. Also, Mangini never shirked responsibility as Jets coach and always stood up and took the bullets.

Q: Why has no other team expressed interest in Mangini?
A: Some believe he is too tough a coach to work for. But he's not the only coach accused of that. It is odd that he is not a candidate in Detroit, St. Louis, Oakland or Denver.

Q: Would Mangini be given the full authority over personnel and the draft that Crennel lacked?

A: Probably not. Mangini's personal choice to take over as Browns general manager is George Kokinis, the Baltimore Ravens' pro personnel director. They are good friends since their original days in entry-level positions with the Bill Belichick Browns of the early 1990s. The only way the Browns could pry Kokinis from the Ravens, however, is by giving him full authority over football decisions. Mangini apparently is comfortable with that.

Q: Isn't that the way it worked in New York between Mangini and General Manager Mike Tannenbaum, who also were close friends?

A: Yes. For three years, Tannenbaum and Mangini worked hand-in-hand on personnel decisions, with Tannenbaum having final say. But they differed on Favre. The owner and Tannenbaum wanted him and Mangini was lukewarm at best.

Q: Isn't Mangini a clone of Bill Belichick?

A: Well, they are very similar -- stoic workaholics always looking for the slightest competitive edge to exploit their opponents. They are not going to light up a room when they enter it.

Q: What has happened to their relationship?

A: It's non-existent. After succeeding Crennel one year as New England defensive coordinator, Mangini interviewed for some head coaching jobs. Belichick encouraged him with one proviso -- take any job but the Jets, who are the Patriots' arch rivals. Mangini not only defied his mentor, but further angered him by trying to raid the Patriots' staff for assistants. Then, after the season-opening meeting of the rivals in 2007, the NFL office received evidence of Belichick authorizing the videotaping of Jets' defensive signals, which is against league rules. It is widely believed that Mangini is the one who snitched. The Patriots were docked a first-round draft pick and fined $250,000. Belichick was fined an additional $500,000 -- the maximum under NFL rules. In three seasons, the Jets were 2-5 against Belichick's Patriots, including one loss in the playoffs.

Q: It seems the Browns should be more concerned with defeating their own rivals than in trying to find the next Belichick. What was Mangini's record against the AFC North?

A: In three years, the Jets were 2-4 against teams in the AFC North. They beat Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. They lost twice to Crennel's Browns.

Duhhhhhh...and we're seeing more names coming up..pairs of names...which is good..working combinations..

I don't where Tom Heckert name's was dropped from..but I vaguely remember his name used a possible candidate when the first bunch of names popped up..I think when there was speculation of Reid leaving..

Last I heard Chud was discussed in several coaching searches.

A few years ago (I think after Romeo's first year), our D-Cord was discussed too.

Plus, it's not really all that advisable to have a prospect in mind, interview him, and then just sit back and wait to see what he says. No, you go out and interview a ton of people and start ranking them.

When you go out looking for jobs, do you just go out, apply for one job, and then sit back and wait for them to call? No, you go out and apply all over the place in the hopes that your number 1 place will call, and if they don't, your no. 2, etc.

IMO, Randy is doing what a smart businessman would. He's making sure that if his number 1 isn't there, he has enough information to feel comfortable with his number 2, or his number 3, etc.

The most amazing thing about all the heat that Lerner is getting is that it's all based on speculation about what he's doing or thinking.. he's not said a word publically since his news conference after firing RAC and Savage.

To my knowledge, he's not been quoted as saying that Mangini is the frontrunner..

Everything we've read or heard is all basedon anonymous souces speaking to the press telling them what they THINK is going on ..

Essentially, all he's done is interview some of the candidates for both jobs and it appears he has more interviews scheduled.

So for my money, it appears that NOTHING is set in stone yet.. getting up in arms and laying the heat on Lerner seems quite premature....

Reminds of Chicken Little......

Reminds of Chicken Little......

I think if anyone ever re-wrote that story, they'd change the name to "Browns Fans"

Browns receive permission to interview Eagles GM Heckert
by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter
Tuesday January 06, 2009, 9:08 PM

The Browns have received permission to interview Eagles General Manager Tom Heckert for their GM vacancy, a league source confirmed to The Plain Dealer Tuesday night.

It is not yet known when the interview is, but the Eagles are preparing for their divisional playoff game Sunday against the Giants in New York. The Heckert story was first reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Heckert, widely regarded as one of the NFL's top executives, is in his eighth year with the Eagles and has been the team's GM since Jan. 2, 2006. He doesn't have final say over the 53-man roster, but works closely with coach Andy Reid on all personnel matters. He also manages the player personnel department, which includes both college and NFL scouting. In May, Heckert received a contract extension through 2011.

Heckert's father, Tom, a longtime NFL personnel man, was a scout for the Browns in the 1980s, so the job would probably have special meaning for Heckert.

Because he holds the title of GM and oversees the entire player personnel department, Heckert has a stronger resume than George Kokinis, the pro personnel director for the Ravens, who will be interviewed by the Browns on Sunday. Kokinis is the first choice for GM of coaching front-runner Eric Mangini.

It is not yet known how Heckert's addition to the mix impacts Mangini, who is the top choice of Browns owner Randy Lerner. Heckert has been more closely linked with Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who interviewed with the Browns last Thursday. Spagnuolo and Heckert worked together in Philadelphia and were viewed by some as a team heading into the off-season interview seesions.

Heckert's first draft with the Eagles produced three Pro Bowlers in Lito Sheppard, Michael Lewis, and Brian Westbrook. He's also known for unearthing key rookie free agents.

The Browns have also interviewed Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli and Browns director of player personnel T.J. McCreight for their GM vacancy. Pioli has also interviewed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

DnD...First, I do not share your opinion that Lerner is taking a lot heat for this Mangini stuff.

Let me guess...you had or have another HC in mind?

We all have our preferences...and that is not a problem...you and I are entitled.

Browns to interview Heckert? I thought Mangini already had the HC job and was going to be taking over ownership of the team as well as ownership of the world?

Just throwing this out there, so you guys let me know if this can be done, or if this is the chain of command, in other organizations.

Heckert- V.P. of the team

Kokansi(whatever) G.M. in control of the 53 man roster

Mangini H.C.

I do not know if the title of V.P. and G.M. are basically the same in the N.F.L.

Sounds to me like that would be a choice the owner would make.. I know of no rule that says it can't work like that..

.. " It seems the Browns should be more concerned with defeating their own rivals than in trying to find the next Belichick. What was Mangini's record against the AFC North?

A: In three years, the Jets were 2-4 against teams in the AFC North. They beat Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. They lost twice to Crennel's Browns.. "

Now that is something worth discussing !

U could be on to something...I get a feeling Lerner wants a true structure put in place.

I'm pretty sure the owner can structure his organization however he sees fit and can give whatever titles he wants.. the only stipulation seems to be that most of these FO people have contracts that only allow them to move it is an upward move and not a lateral move... so I'm not sure how that would work if our organization was structured different than others...

Lerner gets guys to fill roles so they have to answer to someone else..
The HC answers to the GM..who answers to the V.P. who answers to Lerner..it's a structure we haven't had.
