By getting our HC early, and really, it seems even you admit the choice was not a bad one, Mangini has time to interview and hire his assistants
That is a luxury RAC did not have. By the time RAC came on board all the good assistants had been hired by other teams and he was stuck choosing from the lessor tier of assistants. A lot of people blamed him for not choosing the right people in the first place having to replace them soon after, but the reality was that there was not a lot to choose from. Our new HC has been spared that restriction.

Outstanding post!!! RAC was never able to dig out of that hole.

Do not like this trifecta....from Mangini to Ryan to Daboll it only gets worse....3buddies running the show...if Kokinis comes along we´ll have 4...I think their freindship will be tested Hate this nepotism BS...it does not work more often then work....RAC was buds with Carthon too, remember? Lerner is about to do the same mistakes again....hire a GM first, who than hires his HC and then BOTH in communication select the Coords...what´s so f**king complicated about this?....I just hate HCs who gives "buddies" a shot at a new job....Ryan sucked at OAK and Daboll has never been an OC....WTF? Once again we seem to run our franchise like a training school...can we get some f**king experience somewhere in this building already? I´m really pissed...especially if we hire Kokinis now...not that I think he sucks...I´m sure he is a good, competent guy...it´s just hat we have greenhorns everywhere yet again.... Lerner did not want to make the same mistakes twice, right? WTF is this compilation of a staff then?? I predict another 1-2 years of overachieving under a new coach just to get our hopes high yet again just to see the players being POed about their hands-on-HC...let the fingerpointing among friends in the staff begin then.... Oh man, this feels like Groundhog day all over again

Yeah but honestly if we draft Jenkins his contract would probably be identical or close to what Asomgua gets...

•The Favre Factor: Mangini handled Favre with kid gloves, rarely criticizing him in front of the team . (Caters to the prima dona players?) A TV report over the weekend said Mangini embarrassed Favre in meetings, but "that report was full of (garbage)," one player said. "He never called him out. If anything, he yelled at the receivers for not breaking up the passes. He'd just throw 'em up, and there was no accountability."
Any chance that Mangini was told from the top brass that Favre was "untouchable"? I mean after the way the season ended with Favre's terrible TD/INT ratio, what did the Jets say? They said we'd like Brett Favre back, and they said bye bye to Mangini. Favre was brought in to sell tickets as much as anything else, so maybe Mangini was told to keep him (Favre) happy. Mind you this is all speculation, but on the day Mangini was fired I thought to myself, it's obvious that the Jets have chosen Favre over their coach.
There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do. -Derek Jeter

Look at it this way - if it succeeds, we're set and it doesn't matter if they're all buddies or not. Wins are what matter. If it fails, Randy sure as heck isn't going to do things this same way again and he'll probably step aside as a failure. He could easily end up selling the team or at least doing things the conventional way by hiring a proven executive to run the show.
Either we win games or we don't have Lerner screwing up the process anymore. Both are good enough options for me.
We're... we're good?

9 of the last 11 Superbowls have been won by head coaches on their 2nd job.
The only two to do so on their first job are Brian Billick and Bill Cowher...and Cowher was there long enough that it felt like a 2nd job.
I've been theory crazy, if you've read my post from late last night (which Ernie Accorsi later supported part of my theory).
Here's another one...
Why have these coaches succeeded on their 2nd try? Probably because the first time they didn't get to do things the way they wanted to and had to submit to guys like Savage, who weren't on the same page with the coaches on how to run the team. You know Shanahan had that problem with Al Davis.
Also, there's the whole learning curve thing. Belichick learned that here.
They needed to learn the delicate balance between not being a big dictator and not being pushed around by those above them. Some swing one way (Shanahan) some swing others (Belichick). Here's hoping Mangini can be less like Belichick in his first stint as a coach, and more like Belichick in his 2nd stint.

Maybe you are right but maybe not. We don't know and stuff like that worries me because you can't let guys like Braylon (and what Favre has become) run amuck and have a successful team.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

Hey guys if we get Rob Ryan you know he is going to face his identical twin brother Rex right?
Wouldn't that be weird? Also wikipedia jumped the gun and is callling Rob our defensive coordinator already.

That's the way it works in every business. Guy takes a new job as a promotion, brings along his friends from previous jobs and "bumps" them up to the next level. Not saying it's right, and I've seen it backfire at some places and work at others. We'll just have to wait and see....as Daman said above, you just never know with any certainty when you hire someone if they are going to be successful.
I'm in the wait and see crowd. We did get a guy with experience, probably the best one (at least to me) who would come here. I doubt Shanahan was going to come, Cowher turned us down, Marty wasn't interested, I don't want Billick or Mooch, so that really left Mangini as far as experienced coaches go. I like Ryan as DC, not sure of the OC guy, but he can't be any worse than Chud was this year.

j/c Mangini is an intriguing choice, and up until now I have considered him to be a viable option. But, to play devil's advocate... I hope we are not hiring someone else's problem. Let's face it, the Jets fired Mangini. There is a chance that the Jets are right. I know they are not the most respected organization, but how different are they from the Browns??? Of course, many successful coaches have been fired only to return and win big (Belichick, Shanahan and Coughlin), but then again, how do we know Mangini is not another Rich Kotite??? I'm eager to hear the press conference. I hope to hear some good questions about lessons learned and changes to be made.

Lerner obviously knew this was his guy from the start. What he knew or how he knew, none of us know what triggered the infatuation he has for Mangini. The simple fact of it all is, Lerner knew and he went with it. Since he's paying the bills, we either like it or we don't but it won't change the fact that he now is coaching our (speaking in the emotional vernacular sense) team.
I personally would have been more elated with Shanahan but Mangini's our guy and I'm now a Mangini supporter until such time as he proves that support is not worthy of a Browns fan. I, as we all I'm sure will salute anyone who can come in here an bring us our long awaited winner. If it proves to be an incorrect decision, we'll it's "wait till next year" and we are all getting very good with all of our practice with that one.

For all the people that are saying that Mangini is bringing in people that will not disagree with him...that's wrong.
He's bringing in people that he can communicate well with him, but that doesn't mean they are the same person. Are you telling me that everyone here is friends with people that think the exact same way as yourself? I seriously doubt it.
What this does mean is that communication is there, instead of it being no communication on what talent to get. That is what is so key for a franchise, good communication and philosophy from the GM to the head coach.
you had a good run Hank.

Yeesh! I mean, I'm supposed to give a rat's patootie about Rod Woodson and Terrell Davis thinking this might not be a great hire? C'mon. I don't listen to those guys when they praise our team, why should I listen now?
In a backwards way, I am happier to hear they dislike the hire. But, you're right. Their comments are worthless. There is a good reason they are talking heads on television - otherwise, they would be working in a front office and leading a football team to a Super Bowl.

I stated earlier that I felt Kokinis would be hired Tuesday and he might. After thinking about it I am not sure if he is going to hire your typical GM. He might split this department in two. Someone on the executive side and someone on the operations side. I keep thinking Cowher in my head or maybe someone like Marty or Holmgren...kind of like a consultant. I believe Lerner likes the way Parcells has impacted teams and might try to emulate such here. JMHO. There is a reason for him hiring Mangini first and I think we are in for a surprise when he makes the announcements...maybe not.

I guess cautious optimism sums up my mood. I believe that Mangini made his mistakes in NY.
The KEY to success will be if Mangini has learned from his mistakes and how does he recover from them.
If he repeats his mistakes.. then this was a bad hire.
If he's able to make the adjustments and step up in a positive way, then I think we can look forward to better Sunday afternoons in Cleveland.

Boy, I sure am glad Randy took his time to make sure Mangini was the best candidate. A whopping 9 days after Romeo was fired and 8 days after Mangini was fired, we have a new coach.
I'm pretty darn pissed right now. Less than 10 days and 4 candidates (one being a Rooney Rule interview) does NOT consistute a serious head coaching search.
I wish Mangini well but Randy's process is a freakin' joke.
Dude, you don't have to interview 25 coaches. It's already been stated that the Browns have done extensive research on coaches. There was probably a small number of guys that wanted to talk to, and they go from there.
Personally, I'm happy with the choice. He'll definitely instill discipline into our players- something we seemed to severely lack as of late.

I hope it works out, Mangini will go as far as the people he surrounds himself with. He made a good choice in Rob Ryan, now he needs to get the offense in order.
What scares me the most is Randy Lerner made this decision, without the approval of an NFL exc. I still believe you need to get an NFL guy to run the team, and let him make these decisions.
Anybody know what time the presser is in the morning, and who might be televising it?

He had help from an NFL exec...although there's no real way to confirm it, a certain Cleveland.com article about a certain GM candidate will give certain clues as to who advised Lerner in this process.

Was this Exc. from another team or a guy not employed? This seems odd, if Randy is willing to listen to him...why not hire him as your President or GM?
I dont understand Randy not wanting an NFL exe right there, employed, helping him make a good football decision. What would that hurt? If Randy's opinion is correct, great! But atleast have someone who knows their stuff, there to help you.

I'll give you a hint... http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2009/01/while_kokinis_has_his_skeptics.html
Read between the lines on the GM candidates we will interview and who this former exec recommended.

Kok is a personal friend of Mangini's, of course he recommended him . It felt like Randy was shopping for a guy who would tell him what he wanted to hear, instead of shopping for the best possible NFL exec.
It's kinda like asking Hank Fraley who the starting QB should be....your not getting an unbiased opinion...so whats the point?
I hope this works out.....I think it would have a better chance had Randy properly established the normal NFL chain of command and power. Time will tell, I still feel that things won't change much until Randy changes HOW this team is run, and not just who is running it.

Whatever you say. There are also a number of sources coming out already that back up my opinion that Lerner was going to hire Pioli and let him take care of things up until Mangini got fired. Randy was excited from the moment he heard Mangini was let go, interviewed him and fell in love which caused him to alter his plan, abandon Pioli, and rush the process without doing due diligence. Reports are coming out now saying that he essentially chose Mangini over Pioli. That decision alone deserves to be second guessed. Even if his studies showed him that having a great head coach helps more than a great GM, the front office is still the key above all. You fail there, the failure spreads like a disease. Yet, Randy is addressing the front office almost as an afterthought. There would have been absolutely nothing wrong with adding Mangini atop the list of candidates and continuing on course, but something about it caused Lerner to seal the process off at Mangini well before its time.
The only reason you'd even do something like that (and even then it's not really advisable) is if you get THE candidate for the job and you have a time frame to grab him in. I can't imagine that Mangini SHOULD have been a guy given that much consideration (especially considering the lack of other teams' interest), but when you consider that Lerner has been trying desperately to build a clone of New England over here and he got a shot at a guy I can just about guarantee you he projected as future Bill Belichick, he went bonkers for him. I bet this decision in his mind, at least on some level, wasn't Pioli vs. Mangini... it was Pioli vs. Belichick... and in THAT situation, suddenly his actions make more sense.
You know what? It is what it is. Nothing we can do to change it now. If Randy is right and Mangini leads us to the promised land, he will be a genius, everyone will hail him as a great football owner, and no one will care about the process used to bring Mangini in. If he misses with this and guys like Pioli, Spagnuolo etc. go other places and succeed, our franchise is going to be the laughingstock of the league even moreso than it is now and Randy will be looked at as a buffoonish owner who got in way over his head. If he blows this one, I can't see how he'll want to keep the team and try to rebuild yet again, especially because the fanbase will be livid beyond comprehension. I hope it never comes to that.
I'm willing to give him and Mangini a shot because I think he is capable of winning and because I love this city and team, but there's no way on earth you're going to convince me away from the notion that from the moment Mangini was let go, this process ground to a halt, went in a completely different direction than was originally intended, and centered on Mangini and Mangini alone.
We're... we're good?

It appears that Ernie Accorsi was helping him quite a bit in this process.

Yup. STO is airing it live at 9:30 am tomorrow. I'm actually going to go to bed early so I make sure I'm up by then. Usually 9:30 is when I get woken up by my daugther.

When Butch Davis was fired and we went through the hiring process I was glued to the tv and computer screen daily looking for news about our search. This time around however, when I found out Cowher had turned us down and Marty wasn't interested, I wasn't that intrigued. Maybe it was because I wasn't excited about the names being mentioned. Spags and Schwartz had no HC experience (and too often I have seen great DC's go on to become lousy head coaches), McDaniels intrigued me but i wasn't too high on Shannahan. Then there was Mangini. He was the only guy being interviewed with HC experience which was what I wanted. I'm indifferent. I guess putting all my hope into RAC when he was first hired taught me a lesson.
For GM I really wanted Pioli, then I heard about his demands and wanting to bring in Ferentz so I soured a bit. Then I wanted (and still do) McKay. I know nothing about the guy from Baltimore and would probably rank him last between the previous mentioned and Philly's GM.
I sort of began to lose faith in RAC after the first season. I didn't expect him to lead us to glory right away, but he didn't seem the same as a coordinator. As a DC he had fire and passion. I rarely saw that from him on Clevelands sidelines. How he handled the Mo Carthon situation and switching in Frye and Dilfer at QB lost a lot of points as well. Then he didn't even give Jeff Davidson (now running Carolina's offense in the playoffs) a chance to draw up and call his own plays, only Carthon's. When Marty was fired in SD a few years ago I was one who actually wanted us to dump RAC in favor of Marty. In two years I'd seen enough to know RAC was in over his head. He had a good season but I cringed when we gave him an extension. One year later...
If find it funny, in 2005 we hired Baltimore's assistant GM guy and New England's DC. Now in 2009 we hire New England's former DC and it appears Baltimore's assistant GM guy again.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

With reports of outrageous demands that NFL teams probably couldn't meet, it makes you wonder if Pioli truly wanted to leave New England, or he's just testing the teams.
I guess we won't know what is true and what's not, but if the reports are correct, then it seems like Pioli probably wasn't coming in the first place.

Check the Mary Kay report I linked above. It's pretty revealing and makes what I once thought were gut feelings about what happened in the process about as solid as they can be without confirmation from Lerner himself. Picking Mangini over Pioli could end up being one of the biggest blunders of the new era when all is said and done.

I hope this works out.....I think it would have a better chance had Randy properly established the normal NFL chain of command and power. Time will tell, I still feel that things won't change much until Randy changes HOW this team is run, and not just who is running it.
Since Ammo won't come out and say it, I will.
It appears that Ernie Accorsi was helping him quite a bit in this process.

Thanks for giving him the info. I wanted him to read between the lines without me outright saying it at the risk of posting a rumor and having another stint in banned camp.

While Kokinis has his skeptics, former Browns GM Accorsi is a big booster by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter Wednesday January 07, 2009, 7:01 PM
CLEVELAND --- If the Browns indeed pair up new coach Eric Mangini with GM candidate George Kokinis, they will be seeking to duplicate the success enjoyed by the Atlanta Falcons this year.
Atlanta turned around its fortunes in one year with a young, rookie general manager at the helm. Thomas Dimitroff, 43, was an out-of-left field candidate to reshape the Falcons and now he is taking bows for transforming them from 4-12 to 11-5 in one year.
Kokinis, 41, the Baltimore Ravens pro personnel director, is the hand-picked choice of Mangini to be the next Browns general manager.
The Browns have interviewed Patriots vice president of personnel Scott Pioli and have received permission to interview Eagles General Manager Tom Heckert. But many consider a Mangini-Kokinis pairing to be a fait accompli because of the strong relationship they've had over the years.
They were among the hungry and driven entry-level staffers who worked essentially as gofers for Bill Belichick in his five seasons as Browns coach in the early 1990s.
Pioli was part of the group. So was Mike Tannenbaum, who eventually became Jets GM. So was Phil Savage, the recently fired Browns GM.
When Belichick was fired by Art Modell after the 1995 season, most of his staff moved to Baltimore. Kokinis is the only one from that pack still with the Ravens.
Mangini tried to hire him with the Jets on at least two occasions. But because Tannenbaum held the top football authority with the Jets, the Ravens had the right to block a lateral move for Kokinis.
Kokinis could only join the Browns as GM or similar position, contractually assured the final say on all football decisions.
Is he ready for that?
One veteran NFL executive said, "Hiring a GM is like drafting a quarterback. You bring in a rookie and, unfortunately, there's a learning curve in the NFL. I think it just depends on how much a learning curve you want to go through."
Another veteran NFL executive said, "He's really less prepared [than Savage] because he's only doing pro personnel."
Savage held the title of director of player personnel with Baltimore, which meant he directly supervised the Ravens' college scouting and pro scouting departments. When Savage left in 2005 for the Browns' job, the Ravens did not fill his job. Kokinis (pro personnel) and Eric DeCosta (director of college scouting) merely reported directly to General Manager Ozzie Newsome.
"You look at the Ravens and they're built through the draft, not through free agency," observed one source.
Also, Dimitroff, the model in Atlanta, served five years as Belichick's director of college scouting with New England before making the jump to GM. Kokinis has been in the Ravens' pro personnel department for nine years -- six as director -- after working as a college scout for four years.
Ernie Accorsi offers a different opinion.
The former Browns executive -- now retired after building the New York Giants championship team -- served as a consultant for the Falcons last year when owner Arthur Blank went looking to rebuild his football operation.
"My three recommendations were Dimitroff, Tom Heckert and Kokinis," Accorsi said. "Blank really loved Dimitroff and hired him before interviewing Kokinis."
It turns out that Accorsi -- and not Belichick -- was the man responsible for bringing Kokinis to Cleveland in 1991. Kokinis had been a baseball graduate assistant at University of Richmond when Accorsi's godson played for the team. Accorsi gave Kokinis an entry level job in the Browns' operations department. After Accorsi left the following year, Belichick took Kokinis under his large wing.
"Everybody fell in love with him," Accorsi said of Kokinis, who was 24 at the time. "Hard worker, smart, a great kid. Now, over the years, I'd lost touch with him. But through my scouts [with the Giants], I got to know of him well. I'd ask about him all the time, and everybody liked him. Ozzie was really high on him."
Accorsi debunks the theory that a general manager is best qualified coming through the scouting ranks, since the draft is the lifeblood of the NFL.
"Number one, I think he did plenty of college scouting," Accorsi said. "Number two, [former NFL executive and Hall of Famer] Jim Finks always told me that for the GM job, it's more important to have a pro personnel background.
"His reasoning was you always have time to prepare for the draft. What's more important is to know the league, not only the players but what it takes to play in the league. The NFL game changes, positions change. The coaches know the league and the pro personnel guys know the league. A lot of the college scouts, they don't see the NFL games much.
"Listen, it's the person that matters, but you're better off being a pro guy because you're going to know the league. You can always get ready for the draft. Finks would preach, 'Look at pro tape, look at pro tape.'"
Newsome said he would not even entertain questions about Kokinis while he is going through the Browns' interview process.
Another NFL team executive summed up Kokinis this way: "He's a real good guy and works 24 hours a day. He's one of those guys that sleeps in the office."
Accorsi thinks Kokinis is ready to make the jump.
"The more research I did, the more I was convinced of it," Accorsi said. "He works like hell. He's a great guy. But you never know. These jobs can change people because the pressure and scrutiny is so great."

Well like I said, who knows what is true and what isn't. I guess it comes down to what's more important. The GM or the coach.
No matter what the combination, you need to make sure they're on the same page. As much as I'd love to see the Pioli-Mangini team, it obviously wasn't happening. Lerner and his team allegedly did a lot of research, and must have felt landing the right coach was more important than landing the right GM.
Pioli was my choice for the GM. Spagnuolo was my choice for HC before Mangini was fired. I don't know if Pioli would have brought in Ferentz or McDaniels, but it's obvious that Lerner's choice for his coach wasn't either of the two. Hopefully, it's the correct decision. Only time will tell.
One good thing to come of this is actually getting a solid, experienced DC in Ryan. Now this OC who is supposedly going to be hired I'm pretty clueless about. I'd prefer someone with more experience, but hey, I guess we'll have to take what we have and see where it leads us.

Ok, my team has a new head coach. I'll be tuning in early in the morning to hear Mangini's vision for the Browns, how he prepares his squad for opponents, what mistakes he made with the Jets that he has learned from, how he handles underachievers, what goes into his game planning, and what style of offense and defense he envisions for the team. I'll assume Randy asked him these questions and heard answers he liked.
Now let's get the personnel guys in place and prepare for free agency and the draft. Also, there is the evaluation of the current players on the team that needs to be done. Get started this weekend and turn this thing around.
I've read that in several of Spagnuolo's interviews, he came in unprepared. I'm hoping that Mangini was just the opposite..fully prepared, insightful, and creative in his interview with Randy and that sealed the deal. That's the kind of coach the Browns need right now. I understand how some might be really upset with the hiring. But Mangini is all we've got, there no turning back...so let's get behind him and hope he is indeed, the Mangenius. Go Browns!!
