I wonder how much we as fans hurt the value of our players we want gone. Obviously our opinions don't matter when it comes to football knowledge. The thing is with all our bellyaching and calling for their heads we make them want to leave. This in turn gets out and teams can sit back and wait instead of jumping at the chance to pick someone up.
I am talking about football in general, not just the Browns. How many times on this site do we say "Lets wait until they cut them and pick him up."

Okay loyal. Put it to the test. Coach has proven time and again that he does have/get some inside info. Many, many times he has said "hey, hold on people, the story you're getting today is NOT the real story. You'll find out soon enough". And, lo and behold, within a week or less, he's been proven right.
Coach has his past predictions and information to go on. He's been proven. People tend to believe those types of people.
You? You have a friend that's a scout. Great. Can you prove it? I wouldn't even dream of asking you to name names simply because that is one way to lose your insider info, we all know that. So, can you tell us what team your friend scouts for? Can you name one person that team is after? We'll be waiting.
I have swam in pools of millionaires. Does that make me a millionaire? No. I've been out of the country, does that make me a foreigner?
I am related to a current nascar driver. I've even raced. Does that make me a nascar driver? Does that give me the inside scoop on all things nascar? No.
I've been on a plane and have a cousin that is a pilot. Does that make me a pilot? Does that mean I know more about flying than you do? No.
Here's a hint: instead of telling us how much you know, and how much of an insider you are and expecting us to believe it, perhaps you should prove it.
I can't get away with saying things about the browns like coach can. Know why? When I say something, it is just that - my opinion. Coach has gone against the grain many times, to the dismay and chagrin of many on here. Only to be proven right within days.
Perhaps you could enamor us with your inside info, as opposed to just telling us how much you know. This board is full of people that "know" everything. Coach is one that has been proven right. There are one or 2 others as well.
Everyone can have an opinion, no problem there. But until you are proven in your opinions, it is just that: your opinion.
I could tell you right now who the next gm of the browns is going to be. And it would be my opinion. I might even be right. That would be 1 for 1 for me. Should that make me legit? Heck no. If I'm 50 for 50 on insider info, yeah, then perhaps people should take what I say as truth. Inside info is just that: info that us outsiders (99.9% of this board) do not have. What do you have for us?
Go ahead and disagree with coach. I do, often. However, when it comes to the Browns, I have found disagreeing with his inside info proves useless. I have, and will continue to disagree with him on some things - which play should've been run, whether to take a timeout at a certain spot or not, who missed a block, etc. Those are subjective things - everyone has an opinion and most times there is no right or wrong.
When it comes to inside info, when you have made a statement prior to the facts being known, and you are proven right time after time, then you will get the respect you want.
I was in Chicago recently, at a restaurant, and I saw about 10 super bowl rings. Does that make me smarter? I know many doctors, and they know me, from a friendship standpoint. Does that make me a doctor? Does that give me an inside scoop on medical issues? I played basketball against Shawn Kemp when I was in college (I'm older than he is - it was open gym) does that make me a pro? Does that mean I have the inside scoop on the nba?
No that doesn't make you any of those things. Coach knows no better than anyone on here who is a better QB or who will be gone or start or what type of offense will be run or anything. He needs to stop telling people they are lost or calling their idea or post garbage or anything else, simply based on his OPINION or anything else. He could simply choose to IGNORE others posts that he disagrees with and let them have their fair say without being a punk about it. That's all. I want Quinn Traded and he wants Anderson gone...should I call him names and be disrespectful about it? No... I will state my case and move on, when someone says the opposite, I can try to prove them wrong...but once again it is all OPINION. Because no one knows for sure.

Are you seriously calling me a troll? Give me a break...just because I think DA is a much better quarterback then BQ doesnt mean that I am a troll. Its funny how so many people get so touchy if you bad mouth their boy Quinn. He isn't that good...

You have no idea how good he is.
It's not what your opinion is, it's how you present it. Yes, very troll like IMO
He played "one healthy game" and did VERY well. So based upon that? There's no merrit on your opinion of BQ. None.
And DA digressed, went backwards. It's been proven on this board time after time.
So nobody minds you having a different opinion. But making blanket statements that are outlandish and baseless? That's what looks so troll like.
Just throwing out nastiness with nothing of merrit attatched to it.

Any of you that think Derek *CANNOT* be the starter here are disillusioned and here is why I tell you that...
#1 Mangini isn't tied to Brady Quinn in any way whatsoever.
#2 The new GM won't me married to Quinn like Savage was. Savage put all his stock in Quinn by giving up 2 draft first day draft picks for him.
#3 The new GM/Coaching staff is going to keep whoever gives them the best chance to win. Quinn may NOT be the answer. Talk of keeping DA gives suspicion to the fact Mangini may think that behind the scenes. He may want to see what he really has.
#4 Just because some of the fans hate DA and boo him doesn't mean they have to cut/trade him.
If they keep DA and Quinn, there has to be a good reason... Maybe they will try and get a totally different QB from either of them. Who really knows?

I beg to differ. Many people around here take it very personally when a poster lauds DA or puts BQ down. Why do you think this thread has disintegrated into this nonsense like so many others before it?
Someone could post "I think DA is a better QB than BQ" and it would be followed with 50 posts of insults and various "laughing" or "crazy" graemlins from the in-crowd.

I know that in college he padded his stats against teams like Navy, Air Force, and Fresno State...There is a reason why he fell to 22 and we were the only team to attempt to trade up for him...he just isn't that good and many scouts going into the draft thought he was a third round talent. IMO he is going to be a bust, and we are all going to be sorry that we didn't trade him now. His value right now is the highest it is ever going to be, get something for him. Oh, man, what a riot. You showed just how much YOU know about developing QBs with your statement that DA has "vastly" improved his footwork. I would tell you to watch the tapes, but what's the point? You wouldn't know what you were looking for. Good for you, though, you know how to use GOOGLE to see how to develop a QB Yeah, I know nothing about developing QBs.....that's why my last three starters are all playing in college now. It's my "opinion" of what type of offense we will run? Nope, and I didn't even need to talk to anyone to find that out. If you had all the connections you claimed, you would SURELY know that we are going to run a "hybrid" offense with the philosophies of the NE offense and WCO combined. You see, they had this thing called a press conferenece. That's where the HC meets with all the press and talks awhile and then answers questions. He answered the question as to what kind of offense the Browns would run. So, it's not an OPINION as to what we will run, it's a fact Now, I will grant you that it's my OPINION that BQ will be the QB going into next season. However, I came to that OPINION based on the FACTS. DA is very inconsistent with the short passing game. He has proven it over the last two years, as the numbers show. In fact, he's digressed in that area of his game. Unless some miracle occurs and he actually DOES improve his footwork, mechanics, and develops sime touch on the short passes in this offseason, he is ill suited to run the style offense we have IN MY OPINION. I will also state that it is my OPINION that BQ can't be judged based on 2 1/2 games especially when you factor in the broken finger he suffered. When you state that DA can "make al the throws" and its documented fact that he cannot, it's "garbage" and you are "lost". I would even add "cluelesss" because you haven't researched it and found out the facts. You wishing it were true doesn't make it so. To state that BQ's injury didn't affect his game is "garbage" when those within the organization said that it DID affect his game. It is true that my OPINOIN is that 2 1/2 games isn't enough to judge a player's abilitites.....however, it is the same OPINION shared by the vast majority of people that actually coach and evaluate players. The bottom line is simple. If you have an opinion, we can debate that. When you start making false statements and I know they are false, I will call you on it. I would expect anyone to do the same to me. When you go around spreading misinformation, it isn't debating or offering an opinion. That may fly on the other board, skippy, but not here. I'm sorry that you think correcting your inaccurate statements is such an audacity. If you don't like it, maybe you shouldn't post false information.

It's because they simply throw out baseless claims and insult the players and their supporters rather than "debate" based upon merrit. Pretty simple actually. But yes, there are some who are overly defensive IMO. But that's more the acception than the rule.
Let me give you an example........Quinn broke his finger during the first quarter of his second game. I brought this up in more than one response on the matter. Yet, nobody wishes to recognise it or consider that into the equasion.
Now if BQ's detractors would look at that and understand that, or even recognise it? It may be different. But it doesn't suit their oposition, so instead, they act like it was never posted. It doesn't suit their agenda so it doesn't exist?
You see, that's not debating an issue. That's berading a player without looking at the big picture.

If you are saying that people would want to know "why they believe that and what they are basing their opinion on", I agree. I mean shouldn't one be expected to back up their opinions and how they arrived at that conclusion? And often times when they are called on the carpet? Their responses are pretty funny.

The reason why no one cares about the broken finger is because it was said by the coaches and brady himself that it didn't effect him. If we are going to use injuries as excuses then how about DAs concussion at the beginning of the season? You don't think that all of that missed time, and lingering effects of his concussion were botherhing him? He played pretty bad in the first few games, but starting at the Cincy game we saw "good DA" for 4 out of 5 weeks. That is what I never understood about the whole benching...why would you bench DA when he was playing fairly well?

Yep! Once you gt past Miami at #11, other teams drafting had greater needs than QB. That's "why".

That's hardly the case. Are you really saying that there isn't a contingency of posters here who will mock a poster for stating something as innocuous as "I think DA is a better QB than BQ" ? You're right, it is just an opinion, and as such there is no duty to support or defend it. Me? I do happen to think that when we look back ten years from now, DA will have had a better NFL career than BQ. That's my opinion. I'm not going to argue about it. I'm not going to debate it. And yet, for simply making a statement such as that, there are plenty of "high-profile" (no pun intended) posters here who will gladly tell me that I'm dumb or ignorant or blind or a moron or any combination.

You mean that same press conference where he talked about when they played the Browns that it was basically like playing themselves, because of the same offensive philosophy..but some different nuances.Yeah, I remember. Coach, a fact is something that is proven...That would mean that Anderson didn't complete 1 short pass. Based on you whacky logic, Quinn cannot make any pass period. As for the rest, I kind of skimmed through it, because my goal in life is to become more knowledgable...not less. I do believe "some will" Adam. And I said so in my post. Any time you get a large group of people that happens. And that's exactly what this place is. And as such, you get the same variety of personalities you get in any large crowd.
And you're right about me being far more concerned with you knowing what I meant than anything else.
I disagree with you as it pertains to the DA vs BQ thing. But I don't see you berating anyone or trying to tear one down in order to build the other one up.
It's quite possible that given the right coaching, in the right system ( pure pocket QB ) with a good OL, DA might flourish.
But IMO- He seems too easily shaken without 100% support. As though the stars must be aligned just right for him to flourish. That criticism and pressure seems to cause him to crumble.
Now that's purely from my own observations and my opinion. But that combined with innaccuracy would be my biggest concerns with DA. And our individual perception of these issues may go a long way in why we see this thing differently.

And who are these "many scouts" you speak of?
The words couldn't be harsher. "He's the biggest fraud in the draft," an NFL scout says of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn. The scout is not a lone wolf howling into the wind.
Of all the risers and fallers on this year's draft charts, Quinn certainly is the most provocative. He entered his senior season as the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow--a seemingly brilliant quarterback with near-ideal size (6-3, 225), textbook form and, thanks to the teachings of Charlie Weis, an unmatched pedigree. He was the No. 1 overall pick in waiting--at the least a sure bet to be the top QB taken. But the book on Quinn is being rewritten.
Quinn has an excellent chance to be selected in the first round--many still have him pegged for the top 10--but he is on a slippery slope. The Pro Football War Room lists his NFL comparison as Joey Harrington. Two scouts who cover Notre Dame for NFL teams believe Quinn should be a third- or fourth-round pick. They represent an extreme point of view, but they have studied Quinn's game at close range for years and are part of a growing group of talent evaluators who question his arm strength and accuracy on deep and intermediate routes.
The most surprising criticism: Some scouts say Quinn--often painted as the perfect leader during his time in South Bend--wilts when the going gets tough. Ironically, Quinn has been passed on most draft boards by LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who faced unrelenting criticism in college for wilting when the going got tough.
Russell is 6-6, 260, with an arm as strong as any in the NFL. No matter what he shows in individual workouts, he'll have that arm and scouts will froth. Quinn likely will be highly selective with his workouts, and when he does perform for scouts, he'll be under intense pressure. It's a difficult and unexpected reality for a 22-year-old who played with such grace--and guts--in his college career.
The scouting season has reached a furious boil. Sadly, Quinn's goose may be cooking.

You see, this is what I am talking about. You resort to twisting things and ignoring facts. It is a FACT that Mangini stated what kind of offense we would run. Yes, he mentioned how close the offenses were when they played. He didn't mention, however, and it's been reported on, that when Favre was acquired they changed their offense. Hmmmmm, both QBs were strong armed gunslingers that started so the offenses looked the same. Wonder why? Where did I say that DA couldn't complete "1" pass? Oh, that's right, I didn't. I did, howver, show you the stats from his starting career wher he FAR below the AVERAGE QB in his short throws. You claim that BQ can't make "any" throws. You camed to that conlusion...or maybe opinion...based on 2 1/2 games. What about the combine where he made ALL the throws necessary? I guess that was someone else at the combine? You have nothing to back up your OPINION thta BQ can't make "any" throw. Even the most uneducated football fan knows that is pure "garbage". Yet, you are offended when someone calls it exactly what it is. I don't care if you ignore what I write. You don't want to gain more knowledge, you want everyone to agree with your opinion based on false information and false logic. Again, don't post inaccurate information and expect not to get called on it. You are either a troll, want to portray yourself as a troll just to argue iwth people, or you have serious self esteem issues and feel somehow better about yourself by making ridiculous statements on a messageboard. Either way, I could care less. Some of us want to talk football.

Yeah I guess that two NFL scouts who cover ND for the NFL wouldn't know what they were talking about...

But I don't see you berating anyone or trying to tear one down in order to build the other one up.
I've berated both when they performed poorly. I only caught flack around here when it was about Quinn, though.
But yeah, this will play out as it will, and what you, me, or anyone else on this board thinks really is immaterial. I should also add that while I think that DA will have a better career, I believe that he's going to have to go to a different team, one that allows its players to develop and doesn't cast the weight of the world upon one person's shoulders, in order to do that.

Not to get in to the debate in any depth....but i do remember TSN had Quinn rated a 3rd round talent...so there were a group of people who had Quinn less than a 1st rounder, and his falling supports that.
There was a varied scouting report on BQ.
Just a FYI....

Og, a couple of things I'll reply to in one post to save clutter.
You found one scout being "harsh". Should I post all of the scouting reports that said otherwise? There were a FEW that said BQ would bust. There were MANY respected scouts that said otherwise.
Now, you mentioned the injury and the coaches and BQ stating it didn't afect him. Yes, they did....then they later stated it DID affect him. BQ and the staff didn't want it to be looked at as an "excuse". The injury DID affect his throws. It was obvious on film and was stated by the coaches and BQ later on.
You mentioned DA's concussion and that certainly was a factor int he situation, as I defended him at the time. HOWEVER, that doesn't discount his poor play last year, his inconsitencies last year, his slump last year, and the concussion can only excuse so much of this year.
The simple fact is that neither BQ or DA were responsible for ALL of the poor play. However, DA has not improved his footwork, mechanics, or his touch. in 2 seasons sarting. BQ has started 2 1/2 games. While the jury is out on BQ, there is enough body of work to judge the upside of DA. I'm not saying BQ is the answer. I'm saying based on what DA has shown and the offense we will be running, DA will not be on the roster next season. BQ might be a bust. We don't know that. What we do know is that Mangini is bringing in a system not suited for DA.

I'm not going to try and debate this but I just want to point out that Russell became the "Golden Boy" to many of these experts.

Oh I understand that Peen. But it seems as though someone is at least "hinting" that this was a general consensus by many.
Which I find to be quite flawed IMO

Accuracy is DA's biggest issue, as you know. Accuracy comes from the waste down *HA*, and DA's mechanics, as coach pointed out, are terrible. They havent improved to a noticeable point. It osnt "easy" to fix an NFL QB's mechanics when that is how he's been throwing for his entire football life. DA also makes awful mistakes and decisions, frequently...which is only fixable by DA, not the coaches. EM is most likely gonna bring in offensive coaches who like the WCO type of offense. Derek is owed a $5mil bonus, the writing on the wall says DA wont be here in 2009. But by all means folks!

Some of the petty arguing going on here lately is making this forum a lot less nice to visit.

Well, you're going to get Quinn vs DA on any other Browns message boards. Outside of this thread, it's not nearly as petty.
you had a good run Hank.

That is funny, because one of the biggest knocks on Brady and somes reason why he slipped is because of his accuracy issues...especially on the move. He throws balls that sometimes make you scratch your head, like the one this season right to the guy...His passes, especially his long passes are wobbly. I know Romeo called them Misreads, but there is more to it than that. Romeo pulled him so fast...I mean this is a first round pick, you don't screw around with that...He pulled because he was playing soo poorly. Quinn was pissed, and didn't know he was on such a short leash...His actions were not that of a hurt QB that couldn't do the job because of injury. He was mad because he got pulled because of his play, not because of the injury. He made some questionable decesions and had some misreads...not anything to do with he couldn't make the play because he was hurt. It was all mental mistakes.

Both QB's are going to make questionable decisions. Hell, Manning makes questionable decisions.
Here is the thing, once you take away DA's long ball, he becomes much less effective. If he were more accurate on the shorter passes, then could be a much better QB.

After having read quite a few posts in this God-awful thread I'd like to nominate this line as my favorite..... "but I have seen you insult people enough to know you are a poser with a following." I may use that one as my new sig........ But to be honest after reading your self congratulatory steaming pile I don't know which one of you has the bigger superiority complex. I'll let you know when I figure it out.......
