I don't want to derail this thread by getting back on topic, but:

Has anyone stopped to think that maybe the raiders rushing D was bad simply because the raiders O was bad? Consequently teams got big leads on them, and what do they do? Run.

I'll give Ryan a year or 2 to see how our d does.

That and the restrictions placed on Ryan's schemes are both valid as to why the D was so poor....along with the insistance to switch from a 3-4 that was top 5 to a 4-3 that was....well you see the results

OMG!! someone who acutally understands how a offense and a defense affect each other. Someone who actually understands that they are not mutually exclusive. Good post Arch.

There are quite a few people that post here that know alot about football. Many get into the x's and o's deeper than I care to. However, when someone looks at one statistic, or even 2 or 3, yet forgets or ignores all the rest, well, more often than not there conclusions are inconclusive.

As far as OC goes...anything brought in has got to be fresher, more exciting and just as ccapable of producing than what we saw this past season!

Chud must have drawn some of that crap up on an "Etch a Sketch"!

I remember the Mo Carthon crayola Play Book and the praise that Chud got when things were going well.
Now his play book is being drawn up on Etch-a-Sketches.

It's a funny thing how much of a difference in perception there is when the plays are actually executed properly.

Hey, my 1 yr old can draw with crayons, but can't handle the etch-a-sketch yet. My 2 yr old handles the etch-a-sketch with ease.

So, we're headed in the right direction

Might make him a solid X's and O's guy...

Unlike some I'm choosing not to take the "Chicken Little" route until I
see what this group brings to the table.

Now that we have a Ryan as our D- Coordinator, any chance of us running the vaunted 46 defense that the 1985 Chicago Bears employed?

What some seem to forget who have chosen the "sky is falling" path, is the sky already fell. No td's in the last six games would suggest it fell and fell hard. The glass half full crowd realizes the simple fact that once the sky has fallen, reaching for the stars is oh so much easier.

The Raiders have been bad for some years now...but their D has been good. Even though they've had no O, they've had a tough D.

I don't know about that. They sucked about as bad as what we have now by this article.

As someone else mentioned, that's not the whole story. Their pass D numbers, including sacks, were strong. Plus, you've got to remember, their O was bad...very bad...so the D was on the field a lot. And you know what happens to a rund D by the time the latter half of the 4th qtr arrives.

We're in transition. It's scarey and exciting at the same time. We're not certain what we've got in coaches. It's normal to draw conclusion based on the facts as we see them. Experience or lack thereof at their new roles. But they are our coaches now. Hand picked by the HC. I'm going to reserve judgement until I see the team play.

I'm glad that our D coaches are all gone. I really did not like our style, especially the secondary. I'd be interested to see what different coaching would be able to do with the same players...but not so interested that I wouldn't want to see upgrades to our LB's.

Former Cleveland Browns QB coach Carl Smith plans to interview with team, source says

Friday, January 16, 2009
Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter

Former Browns quarterbacks coach Carl Smith was scheduled to interview for his old position with coach Eric Mangini on Thursday night, a source told The Plain Dealer.

Smith, 60, coached the Browns quarterbacks from 2001 to '03, tutoring Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb. Question is, will Smith leave his new job at USC?

He was hired Jan. 6 by USC coach Pete Carroll to coach quarterbacks, serve as assistant head coach and call the plays. Before rejoining the Trojans, where he was quarterbacks coach in 2004, Smith spent two years out of football. Prior to that, he was Jaguars offensive coordinator from 2005 to '07 before being fired.

Current Browns quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer, highly thought of by Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, has not yet been interviewed by Mangini, a source said. Scherer recently interviewed for the San Francisco 49ers' quarterbacks job.

Smith, who has 35 years of experience, also coached quarterbacks and tight ends for the Patriots from 1997 to '99 under Carroll. He began his pro career with the Saints from 1986 to '96 as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

Jets receivers coach Noel Mazzone also has been under consideration for a position with the Browns, possibly as quarterbacks coach.

On the general manager front, Browns owner Randy Lerner interviewed James "Shack" Harris on Thursday in the New York area, a source close to the situation said.

Harris, the former vice president of player personnel for the Jaguars, is the fourth candidate the Browns have interviewed for the job. The others were former Patriots vice president Scott Pioli, who took the Kansas City Chiefs job, current Browns director of player personnel T.J. McCreight and Ravens director of pro personnel George Kokinis.

Kokinis, Mangini's first choice, will be interviewed again by the Browns as early as next week. The Ravens play Pittsburgh on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game.

Harris resigned last month from the Jaguars, who went 5-11 this season. He took the fall for the Jaguars' dismal season and for the signings of receiver Jerry Porter and cornerback Drayton Florence to free-agent contracts in the off-season that totaled $23 million guaranteed. Florence played mostly in the nickel and dime defenses. Porter, hampered by a hamstring injury, finished with 11 catches.

Also, former Broncos General Manager Ted Sundquist said he's reached out to the Browns about interviewing for the GM job and has been in contact with them for several weeks. As of Thursday, no interview had been scheduled.

Sundquist, who was fired by the Broncos after 16 seasons with the organization, said he was a finalist for the Kansas City GM job that went to Pioli. He's in a group of experienced GMs the Browns are aware of, including Floyd Reese and Charley Casserly.

"I feel like I've got a lot of experience to offer a club," Sundquist said. "The Browns are a very intriguing opportunity."

Unlike other experienced executives such as the Falcons' Rich McKay and the Eagles' Tom Heckert, Sundquist said he had no problem with the Browns hiring Mangini before the GM was in place.

He was there during some of thier best years.... He deserves an interiview.

And he seems not to be worried about us already having a coach on board.. to me, that's a no brainer.

A fluke? Or learning from mistakes and growing into the role? And isn't the Raiders the team owned by Al Davis where HE always signs overpriced, washed up players and straps the coaching staff with them? Of course he is.

When I start blaming others as a reason I don't post here? You'll have a comparison to make. As of now? You have nada.

This is the first time since the 80's that we've hired a HC with any experience. And that was two out of three winning seasons with a sub par team. If you want to play cry in your beer, have at it. But there is a cause for optimism this time around.

That's all the time I have to waste on you today................

This puzzles me, the guy has prolly the most experience of anyone we have interviewed, he is interested, has been in contact with the Browns, and is the only one that has actually said he doesn't care about Mangini being hired first(that I know of) and he doesn't have an interview yet. Then we go interview a bum like Harris?

As I said....there are exeptions to the norm and Belly is the Tom Brady of the HCs....and how many HoF QBs are there in the 6th round normally? Also, Belly and Brady profited from one another...it was a perfect and pretty unique symbiosis

Of course you´re free to believe, like Lerner obviously does, that Mangini is the 2nd coming of Belly...I´m looking at this more realisticly....I´d estimate that 1st time HCs that get fired after 3 years and a negative record (don´t give me the 2 years with a positive record BS....going 9-7 with the easiest schedule out there and a monumental choke job at the end is as bad as it gets...MIA, with less talent, had an even harder schedule having to face BAL instead of CIN in the reg season and reached 11 wins after 1win season)...at least 40-50% of HCs with that track record don´t ever even get another HC job in the league AGAIN...yet we give Mangini even more power here? wtf has he done to jusitfy it?....Cleveland Browns: the training school of the NFL

think Crennel will get another shot? Nolan? Cameron? Linehan?

The Jets were in win now modus for 2009 ALL THE WAY....they bought Faneca, Law, Jenkins and Favre...go ask some Jets-fans: they failed miserably. They played uninspired football late in the season against absolute crap teams when the POs were on the line...that all falls back to the HC, who happens to be our new messias, doesn´t it?

Now, I can live with Mangini...he wasn´t a horrible choice looking at the alternatives. The horrible decision was the power he undeservedly received from Randy and the inexperienced regime he put together.

Learning from mistakes? You do know that Ryans D got worse with evey year and every supposed "upgrade" to it? As for Davis or Kiffin overruling Ryan: he´s either a yes-man or bad DC or both?....you guys still have to pick a poison

Can you quote "one reliable source" that gives us a clear picture of what "powers he recieved fromRandy"? I mean if you're going on nothing but pure speculation, fine. But speculation has nothing to do with "facts". And trying to present your speculations as fact doesn't change that.

Quote:

Speculation is just as valid from one perspective as it is another. What was Bellichicks record as the Browns HC before he went to NE? What I'm saying as he comes MUCH closer to fitting that mold than anyone else who was available.

Secondly, you "should know" as well as anyone that Al Davis infects his coaching staff with washed up has beens and blames his coaching staff for the results of his mistakes. So just keep ignoring those things.

It just helps bolster the fact that some only see what they want to see and refuse to even entertain any ideas that don't suit their purpose. Like I said, there are valid reasons to be optimistic. If you don't see that, that's on you, not me.

And have a nice day.

I dont understand how people think Ryan is an inexperianced coach. The guy grew up in football. The Ryans are to defense what the Mannings are to QBs.

The browns havnt had a pedigree like that in the organization. For people that say that Oaklands defense got worse, the organization would give out huge paydays to a player, then cut him. Thats not easy to work with. Especially trying to do your thing with two other peoples philosiphy. Like getting a job based on your credentials and accomplishments but not allowing you to do it your way. The only fault Ryan has is not adjusting to 2 other people (Kiffen,Davis) telling him how to do his job the way he knew how to.

On top of that, with the whole firing of Kiffen fiasco, Ryan remained a top professional during the whole ordeal (something this team needed after Savages lack of professionalism). Even after Kiffen threw Ryan under the bus publicly saying that Ryan and Davis gameplaneed behind Kiffens back (the owners fault, not Ryan because he had to do what the owner tells him to do), which Kiffen knew about and knew how things were ran. He also faulted him being fired in Oakland for having to work with Ryan, a guy who had differant philosiphies. Ryan remained a professional thru out the whole ordea and didnt throw anyone under the bus. He kept on doing his job and worked with what he was given. Its not Ryans fault that Davis wouldnt let him take another job that suited him better.

Also, former Broncos General Manager Ted Sundquist said he's reached out to the Browns about interviewing for the GM job and has been in contact with them for several weeks. As of Thursday, no interview had been scheduled.

I hope Lerner grants him a interview..

I've read that Lerner is out of the country this week, so that could be another reason people may not have been recently interviewed.

This previous post is what I was trying to warn you against before. It is unwarranted to throw out attacks and outlandish claims without backing them.

9-7 in the NFL is not "as bad as it gets" For instance, Buffalo had a similar schedule and did not finish that well. All teams in the NFL have talent and it requires good coaching to get to that mark regardless of schedule. Their sputtering finish reflects badly on coaching, but you cannot completely focus on their finish just like you cannot completely focus on their start.

Randomly throwing a percentage out there does not make it a valid statistic. If you want to back up your reservation about Mangini, take the time to go and look up coaches with similar records. And don't compare him to a coach that went 1-15, compare him to coaches that finished ~.500 both just above and below that mark.

Then, you blow all of that away by saying that you did not mind the Mangini hire considering our other options. Ummm, okay. You do have a problem with the "inexperienced" regime that Mangini has put together....

GM - unfilled, so we do not know. However, if the most likely thing happens at this point, we will have Kokinis in charge. He has experience as a pro-personnel director and if we keep TJ McCreight, then we also have experience in the college draft on staff. Kokinis will have to prove he can handle the final say from the FO perspective, but everyone under him will be experienced as we are likely keeping our scouting team intact.

HC - Mangini. 15+ years of coaching + 3 as HC. Experienced.
DC - Ryan. 20+ years of coaching + 4 as DC. Experienced.
OC - Daboll. 10+ years of coaching but Inexperienced at OC.
ST - Seeley. 10yrs ST coach for NE. Experienced.

That is all we know for sure about the staff that Mangini has put together. 3/4 are experienced and the 3rd is someone that Mangini has worked with closely.

I would like to believe that Mangini believes Daboll is ready for the OC job as his job is closely tied to Daboll's success, but he could be wrong in his judgement. So, that is a reservation I have.

As for Ryan, I suppose that I should clarify my previous post so that you can see what many on this board believe.

Ryan had success everywhere he went before he arrived in Oakland in his 17 years of coaching before these past 4 years as DC.

Is it foolish to think that some of the difficulties of being forced to switch defensive alignments and the lack of talent provided played a big role in his struggles these past 2 years (as he did have some successes in his first 2 seasons in Oakland)?

We are taking a coach with a proven pedigree, who has had success at every level and hit a rough patch once on what is considered by many to be the most difficult place to coach. Plus, we already knows he works well with our HC from their previous experiences.

The only other guy available out there with the experience and success that could compare to Ryan was Nolan, and it is not like the past few seasons have been kind to him either.

Also, yes, I do think Mike Nolan will get another shot as a HC in the NFL.

"I wanted a proven comodity."

I totally understand this...but who? Martz? Mo Carthon? This is a team we are trying to build this time with all on the same page. He has had a lot of experience with WRs and QBs which I think a solid background. Chud had 3 years as a TE coach. I'm looking at this hopefully turning out like Arians who had a similar background. But we know he's going to be on the same page as Mangini.

GM??? Experienced? Sorry we need a strong Personnel background that is it. Casserly, Reese and McKay were the only experienced GMs out there. And only Casserly I thought had what it took in the Personnel area. We didn't really need experience in failure. I'm all for building a LONG TERM winning team. Kokinis is the type who will be here for 10+ years. Those experienced GMs that were available I only saw as possible TEMPS in a GM.

I want somebody who is going to see this thing through!

In my opinion, it speaks volumes that Mangini brought Daboll with him to make him the OC when he could have easily brought Schottenheimer and made him the OC/Asst. Head Coach. It seems clear (through a haze of speculation on my part ) that EM and Scottenheimer were at odds in NY, most likely over the Favre saga. Tannenbaum, in an attempt to sell PSLs for their new stadium made the sexy decision to keep Favre around and get rid of EM instead of Schottenheimer, who now also happens to be in the Top 3 for EM's old gig. So EM brings Daboll to Cleveland because he believes in him and will see eye-to-eye with him. EM, who is a defensive coach, clearly trusts Daboll enough to take this thing on and to do so intelligently and successfully. And I'm sure they have had long chats, probably behind Schottenheimer's back, about what should really be going on. I'm sure Daboll has expressed his thoughts on scheme and personnel to EM and they both agreed on a system to run their offense. Again, it's about getting people who work well together and will strive toward the common goal.

Well aware of that Attack. Unlike some, I don't see this as a pre-qualification for the 'Destined to Suck' Club.

I'm staying in the give 'em a chance crowd and nothing that anyone says or does between now and September is going to change that.

But he has 10 years of "experience" and he has breathed in and out succesfully for over 30 years now....he qualifies for the job, can´t you see it?
