Well it's the offseason.....(for us anyways ) Summat new, there are some proper music freaks in Browns Town so i know this will go down well, please share your experiences. Used to be a prolific gig go-er in my mid to late teens and then it faded off a bit as i found other scenes in my 20's (most notably the UK "Rave" scene of the early 90's and all that it entailed ) Made a New Years Resolution at the start of '08 to see more bands this past year and i kinda stuck to it. Sometimes think of the "gigs that got away" over the years...the ones that i regret that i couldn't go to (Anthrax in the late 80's as i was grounded ), and the ones that i'm glad that i did (Pantera, twice (RIP Dime), Sepultura, Green Day in a little club in my hometown where i was one of about 30 people - before they made it big). For 2008 i saw Testament with Skolnick (as i missed them in 2007), Carcass (first saw them about 20 yrs ago), the Modfather, Paul Weller, Iron Maiden (first band i ever really "got into") Machine Head, among many others. 2009 is starting well, got tickets for Soundwave festival here in Aus (Nine inch Nails, Alice in Chains, Bullet for My Valentine) and the Kings of Leon in a seperate gig. I'll probably go to the Death Angel gig here also for nostalgia reasons as they were the first gig i ever went to when i was 15. So come on Dawgtalkers, whats on your radar? What was the best gig you went to? Which is the ticket that you most regret missing out on? Share your gig-going experiences (or lack thereof. ) Cheers Riddler

I REALLY wanted to see Franz Welser-Most's interpretation of Shostakovich's Symphony #7 (the "Leningrad") last weekend at Severance, but I was out of town.

In the past few years, I was paid to see, in no particular order, The Rolling Stones, Elton John (twice), Widespread Panic, Carrie Underwood, Modest Mouse, The New Pornographers, James Taylor (my favorite person to meet, talk about a really nice, down to earth guy), They Might Be Giants, Phil Vassar, Rodney Carrington, Terry Fator, Martina McBride, The Newsboys, Brad Paisley, The Pink Floyd Experience, The Swell Season, Carlos Mencia (hey, he sang one song!), Wilco, Blue Man Group, and most recently Nine Inch Nails (this tour is amazing).

The band I really want to see the most is Lamb of God if they ever tour somewhere close. The one I regret getting not going to was Slayer at the Newport in Columbus. I have wanted to see Testament for a long time also. One of the best ones I ever went to was Iced Earth at the Newport believe it or not, Trivium, Devildriver, and Children of Bodom were also there.

Couple of my favorite shows: Michael Jackson (what can I say, the guy is pure entertainment), Bruce Springsteen, Genesis, Phil Collins and the GREAT BB King.
I'm hoping to get to Billy Joel/Elton John when they come back to Cleveland in May. I'd also love to see Pink Flloyd (yeah, yeah, I know). Locally, there isn't much I'm interested in seeing, mostly because I've been out of touch with the local scene for a while. I loved Trip Man Dead (no longer together), Jaded Era and the Strange Familiar.
Worst Show EVER: Jewel! Every damn one of her songs was written for a friend that died by some tragic mean (suicide, cancer, AIDS etc). Her concert just depressed the hell out of me

Good Lord! Where to start? My first concert was The James Gang and Humble Pie. Of course that was in the early 70's. Ted Nugent put on a great show back in the day. Aerosmith. Ozzy with Randy. Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Allman Brothers. The REAL Lynnyrd Skynnyrd. Jeff Beck was a pretty special show. Jeesh, I could keep going. But I guess the one I missed that I regret the most is Pink Floydd. I really don't do many concerts anymore. But I've probably been to at least 100. I like country outlaw shows too. David Alan Coe and saw The Highwaymen before the passing of Johnny and Waylon. That was priceless IMO.........
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I haven't gone to a concert in a while, never was big into going to them, although I've always had a good time when I did. I've seen Boston, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner, Hootie and the Blow Fish, Melissa Etheridge, Cher, Earth Wind and Fire, a couple of Lilith Fairs where I saw a bunch of people, John Denver, Johnny Cash, and quite a few local type bands that nobody would recognize. I've seen a couple of them multiple times. Like I said, I enjoyed them all, even the one's I was dragged to.

Did you see her when she played Cain Park in Cleveland Heights? I got my wife tickets to that show for her B day a few years ago. It was a completely acoustic show and I went formy wife r but I have to admit I thought it was a great show and Jewel is a amazing talent. I really thought she was good at interacting with the audience and telling the storys of her songs.

Favourite concert ever: Triumph... April 1985, 'Thunder 7' tour. They were at their peak at the time, & sold out arenas all over North America in their heyday.
Close 2nd: Def Leppard Hysteria tour in 1988, also at their peak.
I could have seen the Stones a couple years ago; the ticket was practically in my hands but I said to hell with it, because I didn't want to travel three hours to get there. Might regret it someday.

I have been to a lot of shows but my favorites have always been the Static X shows I have been to. I think I have seen them ten times. It has been interesting to watch the development of the band from Wisconsin Death Trip through Canibal. I have also seen some good opening acts for them, like Soulfly and Soil.
The band I regret not seeing and I am still holding out hope they will come to Ohio is Rage Against the Machine.

A few of my favorites were:
Don't laugh.....The Jackson 5 at Municipal Stadium in 1984. What can I say!
Guns N Roses a couple years ago - that was right before Axl went completely off the deep end and quit showing up for concerts. I absolutely LOVE his voice!
And this past fall we saw The Back Keys in Akron at BJ Thomas Hall - what a talented local duo!! I loved the hall too - a smaller more intimate place to see bands, I'd go there again for sure.
Oh, and Genesis at the Richfield Coliseum. Phil Collins is so talented.
Some that I didn't enjoy so much were:
Rod Stewart at Blossom - it was like he was singing in another language. It was strange - I knew all his songs at the time (80's), but I seriously couldn't understand a word he sang.
Pat Benetar and Huey Lewis & The News were unexciting. (OK - BORING)
I'd really like to see Green Day, I hope they come out with new stuff soon & tour. Also wish I had seen the Stones at some point.

Smokin-ass Symphony, fersure. Shosty kicks all the butt in all 15 of the big works. If you ever get a chance to hear #8, don't pass it up. It's immense... and very moving. It's surtitle: "Dedicated to the memory of the victims of Fascism and war." In the third movement, there is a rising volume level and writing that suggests the Stalin war maching rolling over the peasants. Exhausting and exhilerating to play. Violent and visceral in the extreme, it kicks the spit out of the hardest rock band you can name. (imho) BTW: Did you know that the players in the CO refer to Franz Welser-Möst as "Frankly Worst than Most?"
"too many notes, not enough music-"

I saw her when she first hit the scene (Who Will Save Your Soul?). Perhaps she's improved since then. Personally, because of that first show, I'd be leery of going to another one of her shows.
I loved her opening band though...the Rugburns. They were great!
Another boring concert: Sammy Kershaw, and I love his songs! No audience interaction.

Trip Man Dead. I used to play in a band with their guitar player Justin. I don't know if he used Justin as his stage name with Trip. Never seen them and I only talk to him every now and then. He's a good guy though.

I've seen alot of the hair bands like Warrant, Skid Row, Poison etc. But two that are kinda off the wall were BB King my parents took me to when I was young and Celine Dion at blossom back in '96.
Don't rip on Celine, yeah her stage gestures are kinda corny but I went to hear her voice. I respect anybody that can really sing well. Her voice is incredible.

Your listing of hairbands reminded me that WAY back in the day, I saw LA Guns at the Akron Agora. I couldn't have been more than 14, fun show!
An ex-boyfriend of mine turned me on to Trip, I can't remember who he knew, I mean, I dated this guy in 2001, I can't remember that far. I just know that I used to listen to the Trip cd that he gave me as I drove up to Muni lot to tailgate. It always got me pumped up!

first show was motley crue. did the heavy metal shows, slayer, pantera, SOD, cannibal corspe, etc i grew up a little and broadened my music interests. since then i have seen willie nelson, phish, tom petty, elvis costello, james brown (rip), john mellencamp, los lobos, bob dylan, kid rock, neil young, doobie bros, george clinton and the p-funk,santana, van the man morrison, steve winwood, and many others.
concerts are my hobbie. the summer months are about concerts. ive been to AT LEAST 200 concerts the past ten years. 20 a year EASY. people at work joke and think im some kind of concert junkie.
i mainly see jambands anymore.i love the music seen always will.
the best shows ive been to have been festivals, first couple bonnaroos, hookahvilles, etc. I flew to san fran on my 30th to see Van the man Morrison, then drove to LA the next night to see him again. that was special for me.
the one i really regret missing was the grateful dead right before jerry died. a buddy talked me and a buddie into going and trying to find a ticket. he got us acid instead. lot of crazy stuff happened that night, but no concert for us.

Wow. THE Akron Agora! That was the place back in the day. My favorite place to play. Too bad it turned into a county bar and now is a empty building. Do you remember Outta The Blue? One of the best local bands around during that time. Or Kidd Wicked? Billy Morris plays during the tailgating in the muni sometimes along with Dave Brooks who sang with Slammin Gladis (sp)

I remember Kid Wikked. There used to be a small rock club over on the west side of Cleveland right off West 117th and Berea Rd. I think it was Cleveland Cafe. Kid Wikked used to play in their all the time. I had a friend who was a good friend of a couple guys in the band, so we used to go there and drink with them between sets. I did not realize that was Billy Morris though. Billy Morris owns a small rock club down in Lakewood now, it is called the HI FI.

I used to enjoy going to the Hi Fi when it was still the Blind Lemon. Saw some fun shows there.
I wish that the Cleveland Agora was still relevant. I haven't seen a good show, or heard of one coming there, in years.

There was another band named kidd wicked with different spelling. I don't know what state or city where they came from but yeah, I heard Billy owns a club. The Hi Fi sounds about right. We are talking about the same guy.
Used to play with Warrant.

The first show I ever saw was Jethro Tull back in 77, I can still remember the radio ads from WPLR New Haven and 99X from NY, "Tulls on tour and we know youre dying to see em."
New Haven Veterans Memorial CT
The second, was at the same place but.. was the good ole Grateful Dead
I recall with fondness shows with Muddy Waters, Ian Hunter with Mick Ronson, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Watkins Glen, Who, Stones, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, Floyd, Ron Wood and Bo Diddley.. Many of these shows from the Columbus Agora Ballroom
I'm not so sure music will be the same again. A lot of what I hear and see these days is pretty processed stuff.

The Cleveland Agora is a great place to see a show, but like you said they do not have any significant shows any more. That is because they are independently owned and the venues that have connections to the major media outlets(like clear channel) get the big acts.
I saw Nirvana at the Cleveland Agora before they were anybody, I saw the Beastie Boys there too. Also the first time I ever saw Static X, it was there. After that theOdeon started getting all the shows because of their affiliation with Live Nation. Eventually the Odeon went out of business because of House of Blues.

I don't see as many acts as I once did.....last year..... ZZ Topp, Little Big Town, Clint Black, Robert Plant/Allison Krauss, Ohio Players, Mark Farner....and most of those were at a week long music festival we have in town. I guess Clint Black and Plant/Krauss were the only shows that weren't part of the festival. I think I have mentioned before that I once had to accompany my daughter and a few of her friends when she was about 14 to a Michael Bolton concert. Now let me tell ya...that was a thrill of a lifetime!!

Yeah, I used to love going to the Agora back when I was in high school and college. All the bands I used to see there are either going to the HoB (if they're bigger) and Peabody's (if they're smaller) these days. Those places are alright but both are way too much to get into, especially Peabody's where they book 4 or 5 local acts for every show and pump the ticket prices up.
I never was a fan of the Odeon, really, except when I'd go see my cousin's band each year for the Mountain Dew High School Rock-Off in the late 90s. Back then I preferred the old Peabody's (in the Flats) or the Euclid Tavern.
Nowadays, most of the bands I like to see usually come to the Grog Shop or the Beachland, which is fine with me because the shows are cheaper and they're close to my house.

I was at Soldier Field 7/9/95 to see what ended up being the Grateful Dead's last show. If I only knew then what I was witnessing...
Seeing Widespread Panic at Red Rocks was a great show for me. Any time you can see one of your favorite acts at one of the country's premier venues it's a great thing.
