Allen, Gruden Dismissed Jan 16, 2009 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today announced that they have dismissed head coach Jon Gruden and General Manager Bruce Allen. “We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise,” said Buccaneers Co-Chairman Joel Glazer. “However after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward.” http://www.buccaneers.com/news/newsdetail.aspx?newsid=6912

I knew one of them would be gone, but I had no clue which. That both are gone confuses me.
I would personally like to see one or both brought to Cleveland. Unfortunately we have Mangini here and that spot is filled. So that leaves me with hoping for Allen.

They have to have someone else already lined up to fire both guys so late in the off season like this. My guess is you will see someone that is going to be both GM and Coach. Like Shannahan or Holmgren.

I think this move was prompted by Glazer having someone in mind. Now the question is who?? Would warmth and 350 days of sunshine a year get Cowher to reconsider??
I wonder if Dungy would look at a GM role back where he lives??
I hope Glazer isn't looking towards Gainesville.
To me Gruden is good enough you don't just make that move unless you have your sights on something better.
From a coaching and quality of life perspective, Tampa would have to be one of the better NFL cities in which to find yourself employed. The west coast of Florida from Tarpon Springs down to Ft. Meyers is about as nice a place as you can find short of Hawaii.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Letting them both go so late is very surprising.
Monty Kiffen is leaving to join his son in college ball so that's puts them three down. Dungy is an interesting thought but Shanahan is still out there as well.

As far as Dungy goes i doubt very much he would go back to Tampa as a GM. From what i have read and heard he is stepping away from football altogether at this time.

This points to Holmgren Shanahan or Cowher.
I still remember I met a few bucs' fans 2 years ago. they hated gruden, becuase he could never make up his mind on a quarterback. they gave credit to dungy for the super bowl. I don't agree with that line of thinking and would take Gruden in a heartbeat.

I suppose I'm not as sold on Gruden as others. I can't help but feel he took Dungy's tream to the SB and he's done nothing since. Not a great resume' if you ask me. He's managed to employ many many QB's but we really don't need that here, we have enough QB issues.
No, I'm happy where we are right now and hope it pans out.

DAMN! WHY couldn't they have done this weeks ago? I would LOVE to have him here. I heard the GM was prob gone, but Gruden too is shocking to me. Quote:

Well there is no way he would face that problem in Cleveland

Just talking, but Gruden didn't take Dungy's team to the Super Bowl. Gruden took his own team to the Super Bowl. What Dungy couldn't do in Tampa, Gruden did, which was to win the Super Bowl. Dungy was lucky enough to inherit an offense in Indy, which was his downfall in Tampa.
I've never put any stock in the belief that one coach won the big one with another guys players.
It's worth noting that Gruden got the Raiders to the Super Bowl, so his resume is rather sharp.
Having said all that, I'd want no part of him. I've heard rumblings over the years that his players don't trust him, and I wouldn't either. His botching of various QB situations looks like a failure to me.
Bruce Allen? He has a winning track record with both franchises. That's all I really know about him, other than he's the son of former coaching great George Allen.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

Well that only works if you're willing to admit that Switzer was a Super Bowl genius and didn't take Johnson's team to the Super Bowl. I think most if not all can agree that Switzer just inherited a quality team featuring the triplets and walked into a super bowl. Not the fact he was any great NFL coach because he simply wasn't.
The fact is that in 2002 Gruden walked into a quality team and a Super Bowl and never ventured back into that rhelm. He walked into Dungy's team. Without a first or second round pick, in the 2002 draft he brought in such winners as, 3rd rounder WR Marquise Walker, 4th rounder RB Travis Stephens, 5th rounder Safety Jermaine Phillips, 6th rounder DE John Stamper and 7th rounder Corner Tim Wansley. Who?
Now these picks obviously enhanced the previously awful Dungy bucs that didn't make the Super Bowl but made the playoff's in 97, 99 2000 and 2001 under Dungy.
Yep, it was all Gruden and had nothing at all to do with the team that Dungy put together.

Gruden did something Dungy couldn't do in tampa: win in the playoffs when the game temp was below freezing. I remember dungy's last season in tampa when they got drilled in philly in the wild card round. next season gruden takes them back to philly, and they come out of there with a w. not saying gruden is better, but he did do what dungy couldn't.

This is one time we got lucky. We got our coach and JG can go to the Jets, win a few games and ruin their team instead of ours. If JG has proven anything it is that he can win “IF” the pieces are in place for him to win with. But if he has to develop players he falls squarely on his face. I don’t like the guy as a person, and have always thought of him as being a horse’s ass. From what I have read about him, that appears to be the players opinion of him as well. So yeah we got lucky and then some, we got our coach, and a pretty good one at that. JMHO BTTB

Toad...and given the time, Dungy took another team to the Super Bowl and won.
Gruden stepped into a very good spot when he got the Tampa Bay job.

Well, now, wait a second Toadmiester....
If Gruden couldn't take Dungys team to the Superbowl, then when did he take the Raiders to the Superbowl? Oh,, wait, I know,,, didn't the raiders team, partly assembled by Gruden but coached by someone else (callahan I think?) lose to the Dungy/McKay assembled Tampa Bay team coached by Gruden?
Just wondering.

It's been quite an off season so far for Morris. He was just announced as their DC last month replacing Kiffen, now he's their HC? So, in a months time he's moved from being their DB coach to HC and he's 32...
If you're going to fire Gruden for not making the playoffs, why not do it when the season ended instead of taking this route? Something must have just suddenly happened, this doesn't sound planned, it sounds knee-jerk.

I think Peens right.. I think someone became available and the Glazers decided they wanted that person more than Gruden...
The thing is, who is that person.... Shanahan maybe... How about that DC they have that the Raiders are looking at?
The Glazers didn't just wake up one morning, this late in the game and say,, we're firing Gruden.. there had to be a reason and a person in mind to take his place....
