Lebeau needs a HC gig too...

Sources: Jets choose Ravens' Ryan

ESPN.com news services

ESPN Sr. NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen reports that the New York Jets will formally offer their head coaching job to Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who told ESPN's Rachel Nichols that he will accept the position.

The Jets notified other candidates, including offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, of their plans to hire Ryan, the sources said.

A formal announcement is expected Monday, with a news conference likely on Wednesday.

A Jets team spokesperson declined comment.

Ryan told Nichols late Sunday that he could find out about the Jets' job as early as Sunday night. "We'll see. There were no pre-arrangements made or anything, though. I was completely focused on our team."

When asked if he would accept the Jets' job if offered, Ryan said: "Sure. Any coach who believes in himself wants the opportunity, and it's a great franchise."

I wondered why EM didn't hold open the OC job here in Cleveland for Brian until the Jets made a move? Makes you wonder about what EM thought of BS!!

I haven't seen anything yet, but what are the chances that BS sticks with Ryan? I would think that after the season the Ravens had that Ryan may try to hold onto the coaches EM has left behind much the same as Balt did this year??

This should lead to the end of EM filling out his staff, will see??

Ryan's first chore: Develop Gholston

First of all, I'm glad someone got wise and hired Rex Ryan as a head coach. Second, i hope he can do for the Jets what Eric Mangini could not -- namely, make something out of first-round pick Vernon Gholston. The Jets chose him with the sixth pick of last year's draft, believing he was the best pass rusher out there. And they weren't alone. But he wasn't the best pass rusher. In fact, he disappeared once the season started and barely made a blip on the radar. My question: What happened? And how could so many people be so wrong? I don't know, but I know who can get to the bottom of this in two seconds -- and the Jets just named him their head coach. Ryan had an advantage over former Giants' coordinator Steve Spagnuolo because he coaches a 3-4 defense where Spagnuolo coached a 4-3. Both ran units that were extraordinarily successful, but Ryan's defense carried the Ravens -- and it has for years. Let's see if that happens with Gang Green. Part of the equation, of course, is that the Ravens delivered the players. General manager Ozzie Newsome is one of the best in the business when it comes to the draft, and he would find the Ed Reeds and Haloti Ngatas for Ryan to develop. The Jets don't have a great track record with the draft, so that might be a handicap for their new head coach. All I know is that there is one draft pick there he needs to make better. And there is a 3-4 defense there he will make better.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ive been bringing this up every time someone thinks Mangini can develop Wimbley. Well, they have one Ryan to develop Gholson, hopefully the one the Browns got can develop Wimbley.

NOT using my Ohio State bias to defend any player, but Draft = Crapshoot.

You take a chance, it backfires.

When was the last time the Browns first pick panned out,....??

Thomas,...OK, but what you want is to at least go 50-50. You cannot convince me that the Browns have had that kind of luck in the draft over the past ten years.

Gohlston will either come around, or, wish he had gotten his degree. It's that simple.

Im sure if Gohlston doesnt come around he can still afford to finish college.

My post has nothing to do with the draft. It has to do with developing 4-3 college DEs into 3-4 OLBs. I dont care where they were picked. We have an underachieving OLB that people think Mangini can develop in Wimbley when he couldnt do that with Gohlston.

I think some people aren't really thinking Mangini can turn him around but rather Rob Ryan.

I am not certain that there is one ounce of truth to this, but I've read speculation that there was a rub of some kind between BS and EM due in part to the use of Favre... Again, I can't say it's true or not, just speculation that I've read. Who the heck knows....

Personally I dont think Kam can be "turned around". He was a combine star, only had one year starting at FSU, and was surrounded by studs.

Gets to the NFL, his athleticism got him throught year one, team adjusted to his only pass rush move. He's terrible at staying in his lane, he doesnt get any push against the run, hes below average in coverage for an OLB.

And yeah, he stinks rushing the passer as of today, I dont think Vince Lombardi could turn him around, but I guess theres always miracles.

Get another player, hopefully we dont waste time and cap space on Kam. Pretty sure Ryan and EM we see it the same way after minicamps.

Very true. I remember a guy named Troy Polomalu (sp.) who didn't look like he was worth his draft slot after his first season. He seems to have turned out pretty well. For the writer to claim that it's Mangini's fault that Gohlston didn't develop in year one is ridiculous.

Not to disagree, but Polamalu's strengths come as much from the Steeler scheme adjustments to fit his talent.

It was seeing how to fit the plan around the man. That's what the Browns are not good at.

In a scheme that is poorly coached, Troy is just another combine 4.7, 300 lb bench presser that goes nowhere.

Just my most humble opinion.

There were doubts about Gholston's fire going into the draft. The Jets took him knowing that he may struggle adjusting because as smart as he was, football wasnt always his #1 passion.

I think thats the reason Vernon Gholston had an awful year. And will be iffy until he realizes football is a passion and not something you can just get with smarts

This is in regards to Wimbley alone, but our defense as a whole.

So far we have had no pass rush, short of Rogers who can't do it alone. Which leads me to believe one of 2 things are true.

1) We have 0 talent on the D side of the ball
or
2) Our D scheme and coaching didn't know how to use the talent we had.

I prefer to think #2 is a bigger reason, because if #1 is true, then we are in for several years of rebuilding before we see a decent D on the field.

According to Pioli, not many of the Browns defenders could start for New England and that the whole defense needed turned around. I cant disagree with him. Outside of Rogers, who would start over anyone in NE? The Browns had Sean Jones, but they had Harrison. Maybe Jackson at ILB? Maybe Wright?- who needs to stop playing the WR and start playing the ball

That was one of the reasons Lerner didnt hire him. Lerner didnt think that the whole culture needed changed from top to bottom and he didnt want to give Pioli a long time to turn things around. Lerner thought that some talent was there. Which is true, but not much and talked about in the continuity thread, definatley not top to bottom.

Pioli said that BS because he is an egomanical AH. I'm really glad we didn't get that jerk.

He KNOWS, from one team to the next, that the difference is coaches and their chemistry with the FO.

All he wants is the credit,...he doesn't really care about "where."

I would agree & disagree.

We do NOT have that much talent on D.... at least not in our LB'ing corps.
Our secondary is suspect as hell as well.

Man-for-man, compared to the rest of the AFC, I would agree, I could trade any player except Rogers, for someone else and have been "upgraded." My point is, how much of that unrealized, buried talent, is due to a lack of coaches bringing it out, or utilizing it correctly.

I hate the word abortion, but this most recent staff was its epitome.

Again I ask, what is different in Miami, as compared to last year ??

There are only 53 X 32 = what,...?? 1700 players in the NFL; either the talent level is not that different, or there are too many teams to begin with,.....just my theory.

And,...if he was that good a GM man as he talks, he would have buried his Mangini hatchet and came screaming,....instead he took the Urban Meyer way out of Notre Dame and went to Florida,...if you get my analogy.

Or,
He can see the lack of talent, and he knows Mangini isn't that good of a coach, and that without a total rebuild this team cannot be successful. And he wants no part of it.
There are many ways to look at this situation.
Of coarse saying Paoli sucks and is an egomaniac is another option.

"Ive been bringing this up every time someone thinks Mangini can develop Wimbley."

Actually I can't think of one person who has opined that Mangini could develop Wimbley. I have however heard a lot of opinions regarding our new DC Rob Ryan possibly being able to help considering his background was creating the LB crew of the Pats during their transition into the 3-4...McG and others. as the LB coach. Mangini isn't here to coach the D. Remember he is the overseer

To add on,....that what Romeo could, or did not, do.

OR, perhaps elected not to, since he--Wimbley--was Savage's "boy."

When these two turds started battling each other, instead of battling for the Browns,....you get what you got.

Wimbley, somewhere else, in a different time and a different galaxy, is an All-Pro,....jmho.

You may very well be correct.I'm just pointing out other alternatives as to why Paoli isn't here.
I just don't have alot of confidence in the decision makers in Berea.

Oops, that's Pioli.Paoli is town in Pa.it's definately not here.

OJ...
1. RAC was nothing but class and I don't think neither he nor Savage for that matter tried to sabotage the Browns in some Power game.

2. Actually Wimbley was RAC's boy. If you notice all the articles slamming Savage (as he was not exactly the media favorite, everyone liked RAC) and stating that he didn't get RAC 3-4 guys...they mentioned players drafted but not a one listed Wimbley probably the closest thing to a bust so far with our drafts (rounds 1 n 2) 05-08.

That is because RAC was asked in the War room...do you want the Run Stuffer Ngata or the Pass Rusher Wimbley...RAC answered Wimbley (pass Rusher) and the rest we all know. We got a 6th rounder and Wimbley. This I think actually was one of the last times Savage listened to RAC regarding the draft

See, I believe that's complete horsedung--and NOT because it's your take--

IF Savage thought for a second that "keeping" the Ngata pick was the right thing to do, then that tells me he HAD NO CAJONES.

Both of these two would not last a day on point,....at least not in my squad.

But how does that compare to the average turnover for any NFL team,....

I'll argue to my death that Parcells and whoever coached Miami this past season would have done--no proof available--a better job than 4-12.

I'm not looking for agreement,...just confirmation that we should have fired RAC and Savage,..i.e. if they had been in Miami, just guess who else is 4-12 ??

OK... so I bit! lol

I looked up the roster of the Dolphins for 2007 verses 2008. Only 18 of the 53 man roster remained the same from 2007 to 2008. (**note.. this does not include players who were on IR).... So to answer your question, yes the Dolphins pretty much blew up their roster.

Thanks for the input,....about time someone answered the actual question.

Now, does that prove anything ??

What it proves to me is, you can take 53 NFL caliber men, who have no chemistry other than the "original 18," and make a playoff team out of them. It's not about the roster; it's about who is leading it.

Adding 35 NEW players should have sent the Dolphins into a severe rebuilding cycle,....

Instead, they went to the playoffs. Talent ?? OR Coaching ??

Remember, again I point out--exclusive of your 1-AA gems in the rough, you have 117 x 110 = 12,870 1-A candidates looking for 1700 jobs. If coaching isn't the difference, then poor scouting has to be.

"See, I believe that's complete horsedung--and NOT because it's your take--"

Accept I remember it clear as day...on the day of the draft. Also it came up again in our first game against the Ravens. The account of how the two were picked.

Its not my take...Its my Recollection. It has nothing to do with Opinion.

RAC was the HC and D was his specialty...Savage and the scouts had them ranked very close or else there wouldn't have been a toss up situation.

Don't get me wrong...Savage and his staff were sold on both.

But for you to state that it was Savage's boy...dumped on RAC well speaking of horsedung

Doesn't matter "how" it went down,...what matters is that the result is 4-12.

Neither RAC, nor Savage has a job right now,...what does that tell us ??

also, the 'fins had a pretty easy schedule, similar to the one we had in '07, except they played the AFC west. not saying that was the sole reason, but look what it did for us.

another aspect to look at might be injuries. how many from the 'fins ended up on IR last year vs. us.

being relatively injury free in '07 helped tremendously imo, and was detrimental last year
