The cuts are hitting heavy in the business I work in and they found me today. After 10 years at the same place, today I got the news. Six months severance, see 'ya later.

I work(ed!!) in the newspaper biz as a writer here in Canada, as a scant few of you know, but don't worry I never got offended by the media bashing on here.... daman, or eotab . . hell, I do it myself, to be frank about it.
Anyways, since my home computer went kaput a few months ago, I've been posting from work ocasisonally (which is where I am now, cleaning out my desk).

I might not be on much the next while (not that any of you will notice haha), but once I get my stuff together I'll be back.

Like Derek Anderson.

See you guys later, and Go Browns!

Lamp,

I have been a long time lurker (from the old board and now the new board) and I felt it was finally time for me to make my first post since I feel like I know so many of you even though I have never met anyone.

I found out on January 5th that my position was also eliminated after being with my company for 10 years.

The reason why I wanted this to be my first post was to say I know how you feel.

The most important thing is to stay positive, keep your head up and realize that things happen for a reason.

When one door closes, another one always opens and it is for the better.

Times are definitely tough out there right now but there are still several jobs to be had.

I still do not have a job but I am on final interviews, so I guess that is a good thing.

I wish you the best of luck with your search.

I am sorry for the long post and if I sound like I am preaching.

You guys are all great and now I will get back to my lurking......

Very sorry to hear lamp (and you too Miller).

It happened to me in '06. Private owner sold to a corp. (Ohio based). A few years later I thought I had survived the cuts...then, wham, myself and 2 executives' jobs were eliminated the same day. (26 years of service for me).

Good luck and God speed.

The jug is half full, right? For your sake I hope so.

To your benefit you work in a skilled profession (media jokes aside). I hope that you might find something appealing and suitable to your needs.

I am a fairly well compensated laborer with 17 years at my current and hopefully continued employer. That can mean a lesser standard of living given future economic woes. I am not sure how three years of apprenticeship in tool and die or 4 years experience as an ISO auditor translate to employment or income and I frankly hope I don't need to find out.

Take care lamp...keep your head up and sell what makes you better than the next person. Btw, if nothing else hit up your local library or maybe pick up a netbook or something to stay in touch with your fellow Dawgies.

That sucks man, good luck in the job search and unfortunately hearing a story such as your is becoming a regular theme I am hearing, over the past month I have heard from numerous family, friends about someone losing their job, many of these people worked decades for their respective companies only to get shown the door.

Good luck in your upcoming job search, hopefully things will work out for the best for you.

Well, you joined a big club. Unfortunately, there's a lot of people out there without jobs. Hopefully, things turn around in 2009. Sorry to hear that. I'm thankful I have a pretty secure job right now.

Hey, I read the other day Mickey D's is opening 1,000 new stores!

Good luck Lamp.. Hope you don't stay without a job for long.. because I may need a new job soon myself.. If you get one soon.. less competition.. anyways good luck and remember to stay on your feet.. at least you got 6 month's severance.. if they axe me.. i'd get nothing.. and be lucky to even get unemployment with the way California is going.. It's why I picked up a second job..

Some sound advice here Lampy, but i'll re-iterate that many times something better comes out of these situations (though it may not feel like it right now.)

The company i'd been working for these last 3 years went bust on Halloween last year (nothing to do with the state of the economy...everything to do with being run by muppets. )

I landed a short term job with a mate that very day, playtesting video games. Less money but kept the wolves from the door over Xmas until an opportunity presented itself.

I start a new job this coming Monday for a better company and more dosh than the last job doing the same thing.

Hang in there fella, something will come your way mate.

Thank you very much everyone for the well wishes and the welcome.

I hope I did not come across as trying to sidetrack Lamp's post.

As I said, this just happened to me and I know exactly how he feels and the emotions that he is probably going through.

The first day that I did not have to go to work, I was depressed and sat around the house and said this is not fair.

I am not a person who takes hand outs and have worked since I was 16.

Today, I felt like I wanted to throw up because I had to file for unemployment the first time in my life. Let me know tell you that was a fun process!

After the first day of me sitting around though, I told myself I can't do this sitting here feeling sorry for myself routine. I decided that I was going treat every day as a normal work day and make my job search a full time job.

If anyone knows someone looking for an HR/Recruiting and Sales person in the IT consulting/staffing industry, please let me know.

My wife and daughter (she's 6) live on the west side of Cleveland but are totally open to relocation (get me the hell out of this weather!)

Also, if any of you Dayton Dawgs know of anyone hiring down there, please let me know. I grew up in Vandalia and graduated from UD. My parents still live in the area so I would be more than willing to move to the Dayton area.

I guess I will start posting more if that is OK with you guys. I really apologize about the long post.

This is a great group of people and I have watched what some of your prayers have done for people on this board. Most recently for example, 337's situation.

Lamp, please feel free to ask me any questions or ideas on how to go about your search. I would be more than willing to help.

Go Cavs!
Miller
