Sitting in church this morning, wife, daughter. I noticed a friends wife sitting behind us with their 2 kids, but no "john" (not his name). No biggy. People get sick, can't make it, whatever........

When the service was over, I get up to leave and I see "john" a few rows behind. So I figure he got there late, there wasn't room beside his wife and kids, so he sat a few rows back - again, fairly common when you get right down to it.

So, I shake his hand (at this point, we're right beside the bench where his wife and kids were), and, because he and I joke and kid all the time, I say "john, I'd like to introduce you to tammy" (not her real name either). He says "probably not now" and he walks off.

My first thoiught was "ah, they must have had a fight this morning or something...."

As I'm walking out, I see him standing, obviously waiting for me to walk past. As I do, he turns and says "look, I know you had no clue that she filed for divorce on thursday, but that's why I walked out."

I was stunned. Shocked really. These 2 have been married about 19 years. I felt like .........well, like a guy that stuck his foot in his mouth, and then gnawed on it, basically. I told him we'd be thinking of him, and off he went.

This is the third couple we know and are friends with that have filed for divorce in the past 6 months.

I just felt so bad for him...........

So, when I see him monday, I'll tell him "you're right, I didn't know. And I'm sorry for saying what I did, and trust me, I've been through it myself, if there's anything I can do to help let me know".

It was what you might call a very awkward moment.

And all this happened after - long story short here - our pastor asked us to take our shoes off - he was trying to make a point. Another friend was sitting in front of us, so I told my daughter to climb under the bench and take one of his shoes so I could hide it - I mean, that's funny stuff, right? Guy goes to put his shoes on, can't find one of them? He was sitting in front us because there wasn't room by his wife and kids..........

Anybody have any "oops, wish I wouldn't have said that" moments?

First off,, don't feel bad.. you had no way of knowing and your assessment of the situation seemed as plausible as any. Especially since you had no idea that anything was wrong with thier relationship.

Secondly,, yes, I called a guy to recruit him a long time ago,, Called his house in the afternoon, got his wife on the phone, asked for him and she said in her shaky voice,,, that he had died that morning suddenly and unexpectedly.

Awkward... for sure...

Remember a town in Kentucky where thier was a kid that shot kids at the school. I believe the town was Peducah Kentucky... back in like 1999 or something like that.

Anyway, I had a name of a guy at a company that was an engineering manager.. I called him up to see if I could get some business.. we talked for a w hile and I asked him if I that was the town where the school shooting took place.... it was, and one of the kids shot was his daugther...

Awkward... I sent flowers..

Nothing,, not a damn thing you could do about those things.. it happens..

Our neighbors separated. They moved in later the same year that I bought this house.

I hadn't seen the woman's car there for a week or so right before Christmas. They don't have any kids and go on vacation a couple times a year, so I figured the lucky bastages are on vacation again.

So we're out grocery shopping and we run into her. My wife asks her where they hell she's been? Then she goes on to say she and her husband split. Probably not as awkward as what you were in today, but definitely a surprise. They're nice people, we've hung out for cookouts now and again.

Ah, they're all awkward. And like some of you have said, heck, if you don't know, you don't know - can't fault a friend for saying what a friend would say............it's just that when you find out you put your foot in your mouth, even if it's not your fault, you feel bad. Least I do.

Hey, all I can do is be a friend. Sad thing is, it's him, another one, and another one. Then I also have a friend, probably in my top 5 of friends, who found out his wife was cheating on him with their daughter's boyfriend. The daughter is 18, the boyfriend is younger.....................and those 2 aren't even seperated. They're working through things. Now, how it might end I don't know, but still, I give him credit.

Moral of my story appears to be, for those on here that are married, be glad you aren't my personal friend I guess.

I recall the time that I was in an office cubicle farm and I tried to stop a buddy from asking if a female co worker was preggers.. she wasn't and I do believe she was a tad sensitive about her sudden weight gain.... I think the temp in the office was a bright sparkly 20 below after that.

My whole family is bi Brian Regan fans, god, funny stuff, without the need to be dirty and cuss all the time. A couple years ago I burned a Brian Regan CD and we took it with us on our drive down to Virginia Beach. My 9 yeard old son can now do the whole act.

Oh man, yeah that's pretty rough, but no need to beat yourself up. Sure you feel bad, but what you have to realize about funny people, which you seem to be, is that with funny comes risk. Such as what happened to you. In a sense the fact that what happened to you is actually even funnier since it's real. It's called "bad yet funny" philosophy. Yes it totally stinks that your buddy is getting divorced, but it is funny to everyone thats not you or him how that whole joke went down. In a few years when he heals from divorce and he's crushing tail with some new chic, you both will see just how funny that actually was.

Been there done that. I was at the store and the long time manager who I haven't seen in awhile turned from really slim to having a pregnant figure, I assumed she was pregnant congratulated her, then she proceeded to tell me she just got fat. I said whoops and moved on.

some years back I was at a meeting in Boston with other colleagues from around the country. This one fellow I knew reasonably well though we weren't close friends.

Some months before I knew his wife had died, but in one of those moments I shook his hand and asked him how his wife was doing.....as soon as it came out of my mouth I knew if was one of those "Oh Gawd" moments.
