Springsteen delivers promised party at Super Bowl Feb. 1, 2009, 8:53 PM EST TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Bruce Springsteen looked into the camera Sunday night and told the people watching at home to "put the chicken fingers down and turn the television all the way up!"
Then he proceeded to give the Super Bowl crowd and the millions watching on TV three high-energy Boss standards, with the title song from his new album wedged in among them for good measure.
The 59-year-old Springsteen and his E Street Band opened with "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," then without pause ripped through "Born To Run" and "Working on a Dream," before winding up the set with "Glory Days."
Springsteen, dressed all in black, came out Sunday night with the considerable challenge of packing the bombastic energy of one of his rollicking, three-hour concerts into an abbreviated Super Bowl halftime set.
That turned out to be no problem. He had fireworks, an expansive stage, about 1,000 people on the field and help from a Raymond James Stadium crowd equipped with small flashlights.
A five-piece horn section helped saxophonist Clarence Clemons blast out "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," and a gospel choir came on stage to back Springsteen, his wife and bandmate, Patti Scialfa, and guitarist Steven Van Zandt during "Working on a Dream," the title song from his 24th album.
Springsteen is riding a new wave of exposure and popularity, playing for President Barack Obama in Washington before the inauguration, releasing his 24th album this week and winning a Golden Globe award for his song from the Mickey Rourke movie "The Wrestler."
In 1988, Chubby Checker was the first popular musician to perform at halftime, and Michael Jackson raised the bar in 1993. His sister Janet provided the show's most infamous moment with 2004's "wardrobe malfunction."
as always, Solid, Class.....The Boss

I thought he looked like he should have retired 5 years ago. His voice is going, and he was out of breath during a 12 min show

GM"s right, his voice is not what it once was, but then who's is at 59...LOL
The entire performance by the E Street Band was pretty darn amazing and all in all, I thought it was one of the best Halftime shows ever.

I thought the show was very good. The Boss is one of the best concerts that I've ever been to and he didn't disappoint last night. High energy, lots of crowd interaction and even a slide into a cameraman! Good stuff.
Anyone else notice that the folks on the field were all at least about 35 or older? No youngins! LOL! Oh well, the Boss can still turn it out.

One of the better half performances I have seen. I didn't believe the Boss lost much (if anything) in the quality of his voice or performance as a whole.
Do consider, playing a half time show with a 10 minute set up is not the same sound quality you hear from records or recording room performances...jmho...mac...

My dad is a huge boss fan and goes to a concert anytime he's in Ohio. I like him a lot too. I think The Boss and Tom Petty are the two best half time shows I've ever seen.

LOL.. here is what Wiki has on his singing.. you decide if it's a compliment or not LOL..
"Notwithstanding this, among E Street Band members he often gets the second-most amount of "face time" in concert after Clarence Clemons, frequently mugging for the audience and sometimes delivering his unpolished, nasal backing vocals while sharing a microphone with Springsteen"

I thought at a couple of moments that this thing was dubbed over.
Being a drummer, it didn't sound like the whole thing was in synch.
Definitely, he is getting near the "Mick Jagger" stage. Time to count your cash and enjoy life,...fly fish, kneel with the grandkids, sand your '66 GTO.
Just my opinion,...he is still The Boss. "Glory Days" is the tune of a lifetime.

Anybody else notice when the Boss did his knee slide toward the camera that he misjudged the distance and didn't stop until his crotch was right in the stage level camera... I find amusement in the simplest things...

Well, how could you NOT see it?
Overall, I wasn't impressed with Springsteen at half time. I love his music, don't get me wrong. I was really, really hoping he'd play "the rising" (2 reasons: I love the song, and I wanted to see steven van zandt sing with bruce - it's funny how, on that song.........ah, you'd just have to see it I guess)

When his crotch slides into the camera on a 60" HD TV, what else are you supposed to see?
