I doubt any of you guys remember the post i made on here around memorial day last year. My brother was commissioning for the Army and I had mentioned that I had been debating the Air Force for a couple years.

Well, since I had some trouble with school last semester, I decided to go in another direction. I've spent the past month or so trying to get things together to get into the Air Force.

Things finally came together today, I finished up my processing and swore in early this afternoon. I will enter as an E-3 (Airmen First Class) thanks to my college credits.

Since I have worked for an Eye Doctor for the past 1.5 years my first job was Optometry. Then Air Traffic Controller, Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory, and Satellite Wideband and Telemetry as my other jobs. I will probably find out about that fairly soon.

I don't quite know when I will ship out for basic, it will probably be in the next two months. And I'm going to try to get stationed at either Moody AFB, Charleston AFB, Elgin AFB, or Hickam AFB (the fiance wants me to put Hawai'i on the list).

Well, I just figured I let you guys know that there was a new Military Dawg.

Congratulations ! If someone is gonna defend the country, best a dawg do it. My brother was in the military and loved all of his experiences with it. He joined the marines just after 9/11 and was stationed in different parts of the world, and wound up going to Iraq and fighting in the big battle in Faluja. Then when he was tired of the military he got out and used the GI bill to finish his education at Ohio State and start his career doing other things. He has lots of great stories about being in the military and lots of horrible stories too (mostly the Iraq stuff).

Thank you for defending our country.

Of the 4 bases you mentioned I know a bit about and have been to each except Elgin.

Moody..
My brother is currently stationed there. Can't ask for better weather. Not the biggest area in the world. And your butt cheeks will scrunch up when you are driving through some placed (dueling banjo's music starts). Base itself is pretty small, not exactly the accommodations that the Air Force is known for.

Charleston...
An hour and a half down the road from me. Again, can't ask for better weather. Charleston is a nice city, not a bad place to be stationed. The base is typical of an AFB.

Hickam....
Been a few years since I have been to this base, it is side by side with an Army base. Another great place to be as far as weather. Only real downsides to Hickam is, the islands get VERY small after a while and you can't just take a road trip, prepare for high ticket prices each and every time you want to come back to the lower 48.

...thanks for serving.

Thanks to all that have replied and once again thanks to all of you that have served or are curently serving. It's something that I've being wanting to do for a while, and something my dad regrets to this day.

Thanks for the thoughts on the bases Navy. Moody's only on the list because my fiance's family lives just east of Tallahassee and it's only about an hour and a half drive. Eglin's pretty much the same way just 3 hours away. Charleston is an absolutely beautiful town I'd love to be stationed there. And with Hickam, like I said before it's on there because the fiance wants the chance to live in Hawaii. I had Wright-Patterson on the list but the fiance doesn't want to live in Ohio (she's from FL).

IRE -

lol, I've already heard it from my brother (2nd Lt. in the Army), " Have fun in the CHair Force!" Judging from the response you gave, I'm guessing you're just jealous because you're a jarhead

When I was down at MEPS one of the Army NCOs that helped give the physicals mentioned that Airmen get the substandard housing allowance when they're staying on Army bases. There were also several jokes about it being a good thing there wasn't any Navy guys when we were getting weighed in and all that.

I talked to my mom today and she told me that she told my little sister that she could NOT go into the Military, lol.

So now you are insulting me ? JK I was in the army BUT if I had known how good the Air Force guys had it I would have gone there instead. I've been to a few Air Force bases and compared to our accomodations ...well , let's just say I was a little envious . Hope you have a great time . Good Luck.

214...First, congratulations on your decision to serve your country.

It sounds like you have taken some time to think this over and are sure that this is the direction you want to go. Regardless of how much thought you put into your decision, there will come a moment, most likely in basic, that you will ask yourself, what the hell did I get myself into?

Well, it only gets better after basic and after a while, you will adjust and fall into a routine similar to having a job outside the military.

Best advise I can give you is to take advantage of everything the military has to offer and don't look back...thank you for choosing to serve your country...mac...USAF 72-76

Thanks mac, I know basic's gonna be tough. I'll get through it. I plan on taking advantage of the CLRP program (College Loan Repayment Program) and the Tuition Assistance program as well. Since I'm going in as an E-3 I'm gonna finish up my college degree and go to OTS. As things look right now, I'm looking at staying in for my 20 and getting retirement. Getting a decent pension at 45 sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

A little update for everyone, I got a call from my recruiter the other day. His boss had called him and found a opening for a Bomber Avionics position that would leave for BMT on June 2nd. I told him that sounded fine and he told me that if one of my job picks opened up before then I could get them instead. So as of right now, I'm going to be headed to BMT on June 2nd.
