Giants, Browns Each Drop Three

The National Football Post has just been informed of the following NFL roster transactions:

The New York Giants cut running back Reuben Droughns today, along with defensive backs Sammy Knight and Sam Madison.

In Cleveland, the Browns cut quarterback Ken Dorsey, defensive back Terry Cousin and linebacker Antwan Peek.

Many hoped for Dorsey and Cousin...Peek just couldn´t stay healthy and probably wasn´t worth the money (2.95mil for 2009)...but...wtf is Stallworth still doing on this team? I really hope we cut him before his bonus

edit: here´s the link, sorry: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/02/giants-browns-each-drop-three/

Browns announce seven roster moves
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
02.09.2009
The last two players to start at quarterback for the Browns are no longer with the team.

The Browns announced seven roster moves Monday. Ken Dorsey's contract was terminated, and Bruce Gradkowski was waived.

The contracts of Antwan Peek and Terry Cousin were also terminated. Also waived were punter Mike Dragosavich, kicker Jason Reda and offensive lineman Eric Young.

Dorsey was the Browns' third quarterback for most of the past three seasons but started three games in 2008 before suffering a season-ending injury December 21 against Cincinnati. He went to injured-reserve and in stepped Gradkowski, who was with the team less than four weeks before starting the season finale in Pittsburgh.

Peek's 2008 season ended in training camp after he suffered a knee injury. He played in 14 games (four starts) in his first season with the Browns in 2007 and had four sacks. Cousin, a 12-year veteran, signed with the Browns last spring and played in all 16 games last season as a backup cornerback, recording one interception and two pass breakups.

Dragosavich and Reda signed future contracts with the Browns last month. Dragosavich spent the final week of 2008 on the Browns' practice squad, and Reda spent the 2008 preseason with the team as an undrafted free agent. Young signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent last spring and spent the season on the non-football injury list.

I don´t get why we released G Young..he was considered 1 of the best Gs of that draft class but went undrafted because of his injury....I hope they have the medical certainty that he can´t play again or something like this because otherwise this was a pretty useless move....what do you risk bringing him in healthy to OTAs and Camp?

The real question is how we are going to replace all the offensive TDs that Dorsey and Gradkowski scored for us

Thanks DB,,

Is anyone surprised by Dorsey or Gradkowski? Peek I was wondering about, but still, not surprised. Cousins shouldn't have surprised anyone.

Rada and Dragosavich,, who knows, perhaps they'll be back for an OTA or camp.. you can never tell.. but when they cut a guy like Cousins or Dorsey, I think it's safe to say they are gone for good.

I know nothing about young so no sense in speculating....

Before I opened this I guessed who the players were that cut. My guesses were Stallworth, Shaffer, and Cousins.

I got one at least.

Dorsey knew he was cut when Savage got fired. lol.

And there were times this season, I had to be reminded that Peek was even on the team.

Cousins.. OMG.. I don't even know how many times he has cost us... I can't remember all the times I typed his name on Game Day threads asking what the heck is he doing on the field.

I want Holly back, but with a new chief in town.. Not sure if he will be back... Hope he does though. Even as a 5th string, he is worth the spot.

Just curious, why Shaffer? I know many don't like him, but he is not as bad as many proclaim he is, plus there is no one on the roster to fill his spot. Please don't say Tucker, he is not dependable at this point, and if he's healthy, he should play gaurd. At this point in his career, he's not that good at RT, but is very good at RG. He just isn't as quick on the end of the line anymore.

By Game 4, every time we got a team into 3rd-n-Long, I said "ball is going at #25" ... and sure enough, the opposing QB would throw right at #25 and #25 would give up the first down.

I believe that he is as much a factor in our failed season as any single individual can be.

It got to the point on 'What I Saw' where I'd just type 'Terry Cousin.' and leave it at that.

Well, Dorsey was given, and Cousins was garbage.

Damn shame about Peek, though. If he stayed healthy, he could have been a solid player.

The problem with Shaffer, at least as I saw it, was that he did a pretty decent job when he had a guard next to him that was solid..

Whenever Tucker played RG next to him,, that side of the line was solid.. you saw it in 07 a lot and you saw a much more productive Offense in general.

Shafffer out on the end was like a swinging door......

But that's just my opinion..

But with Tucker being the age he is and his injury status the last two seasons, Shafffer might just be our best option...... but we gotta get someone to put next to him.....

Does anyone think it's too much to ask to get 2 or 3 solid LB's, a Safety, another RB, a number 2 receiver (or a #1 and move BE to 2) and also find a RG and a RT?

And even if we do, we better hope Holly is gonna be ok...

Absolutely no surprises here. I wouldn't be shocked to see a few more guys gone before free agency begins. Savage and RAC fell short in creating a winning atmosphere in Cleveland. I hope Mangini and Kokinis will accept nothing less. Go Browns!!

I was thinking Shaffer because he doesn't play as good as his salary says he should. Last year he counted $5,016,041 against our cap for a below-average right tackle.

I don't think Shaffer is a bad player, but he isn't a starting player on a good team in the NFL unless he has a quality guard next to him (as Damanshot pointed out).

Maybe his salary isn't as much this coming season? I don't know.

The main problems with our lines has ALWAYS been the Guards (except in '07 when we had Tuck in there).
If the middle 3 aren't solid, it doesn't matter what you've got at tackle... the rush will just come right up the gut.
A weak guard affects two adjacent players. A weak tackle affects only one adjacent player.

I agree.....and why in the past I pimped Hutcheson, Andrews and a few others.

But..".they are only guards" was the stock answer.

We have to upgrade.....guys like Sowells just aren't good enough....good guards come before round 4 IMO.

I agree...while it's always nice to find a gem that late in the draft, I don't think I would EXPECT it to happen.....if we don't get one in FA, we had better do it early.....

Ahh my friends, remember when Savage and RAC came in and we saw immediate cuts of guys we thought were rubbish.... now we see it again with this regime.

Getting rid of Rubbish is good,, NOT replacing it with more rubbish,,, now that's the real trick

I always thought Peek was pretty good,, when healthy,, we just didn't see much of him healthy..... What,, in 3 years, did we actually get 4 games out of him where he was perfectly healthy? Was it 5? I mean, I know he played in more than that,, but I remember him playing banged up pretty bad for a number of games...

I wonder if the other NFL teams with or without new regimes get rid of their "rubbish" and try to upgrade in areas that they feel are inferior. I think this would be a great strategy, each year we should try to get better players so we can be competitive. What an excellent plan, getting players that fits the needs of the team. Great concept.

System and depth have as much to do with success as natural ability do.

If James Harrison were a Brown, I'm convinced he'd be worrying about cuts right now.

Yes, that's very true,,, so we better hope the new guys are better at figuring out who is and is not Rubbish than those that came before them...

No, no, no...he was garbage. I hated him. HATED him. Can't decide if he was worse than Cousin....

My point was depth...if he was our #4 on a stacked team...well, we could very well end up in the S.B. with him covering 3's and 4's.
