She's got lots of tubes hooked up to her and some stuff on her feet that are meant to keep the blood flowing somehow.. I'd still be there, but I quickly realized that what she needed was sleep and with me around, that wasn't gonna happen so I took off.

Smart man.

Working in a hospital, and particularly on an orthopaedic floor where we see this same surgery all the time, some family members don't understand this. They hover over their loved ones, never let them relax, then end up exhausted and do worse when they start their therapy.

Glad she's doing a bit better after a rocky first night.

Michelle- we get our patients up after hip/knee replacement shortly after they get back to their room. We at least have PT dangle them on the side of the bed. If they feel up to it, some stand, and a few even take a couple steps. Last week we had one waiting in recovery for a bed, and PT went over there and got her to stand up.

They all walk the next morning. Lying in bed only makes things worse. People with hip and knee replacements aren't sick- they are just hurting from the surgery. Tell your wife to keep up the good work

That's what they did with me 17...The day of surgery i was up that night in a chair and then did some short walking with the walker...By the way Daman glad to see she's doing better. She'll probaly be off the drip either tomorrow or Friday and then the exercising really starts and she'll see big jumps, not to mention how much better she'll feel when she notices the pain gone. Hang in there.

Yeah, she's been up and walked with help twice today and she's been sitting up in a chair also...

Drainage tubes are gone, the thing that keeps the legs seperated is gone, the thing that is hooked to her feet to keep the blood flowing is gone.. so now its a cathader (SP) and some lines to put meds in.

She's up and eating and watching TV.... still complaining of pain but seems to be lessening.

I called the nurseing station moments ago,, they intend to give her more pain meds soon and something to help her sleep....

I honestly get the impression that if she could get some sleep, she'll see a dramitc improvement tomorrow.. Just a guess..

She sounds better,,but I know it hurts....

That wedge between the legs really sucks.. With me i couldn't keep my right leg immobil because it would swell as i needed a knee too...Finally a nurse seen that either she remove it or i was...The more she get's up the faster she'll heal. And the better she'll feel..

Is she going to get to go to a rehab center for a few days before she comes home or is she coming straight home...I got to go to a rehab center....Basically i had therapy 3 times a day and lots of moving around to improve strenght. But then again i went through therapy to improve strenght before surgery to help my recovery afterwards....

Good luck and keep us updated.

I've been told that there's pain in the initial stages of recovery from hip replacement (my father has had 3 done (yup, 3) and 2 cousins had their's done). It's a healing process.

Glad to hear things are going according to plan!
God speed on her recovery.

Oh Man Nor,,, She hated that thing.. The names she called it only should come out of a drunken sailors mouth

Yeah, she's headed to a rehab facility near our home in aurora. She's expected to go there tomorrow I think. Maybe Saturday.

Not sure how long they will keep her there,, I dont' want to rush it. I'd rather she takes her time and rehabs properly. But the wife has a mind of her own.. that's for damn sure.

I think they said the minimum is 3 days,, but my guess is that that info is wrong.

Sorry for not responding sooner,, I guess for some reason I completely missed your post... could I just be tired?

Yeah,, rest (sleep) helps them get past the pain. I know this from the two major surgieries that I've had and I'll tell you true, it's better just to sleep through the roughest part

When I saw that her eyes were closing,, I gave her a kiss, and said good night and that I'd call her later.. which of course I did.

Spoke to her already this morning.. they are giving her a sponge bath or some kinda clean up.. she's very very happy bout that....let me tell you.

She also mentioned that the hip is moving and the actual joint seems pain free.. it's the actual cut that hurts.....

Thanks for the encouragment, I'll pass it on when I see her today.

And that attitude is the one to have.....If she's willing to do everythingthe therapist says and maybe alittle more she will do fine....As 17 said it's the muscles that need healing and strenghting.

I was at the rehab center 4 days...I wanted that extra day just to get on my cane..as i felt much more mobile than on crutches.....

LOL. It's only been 2 DAYS. She's had surgery, she's going to have pain after it, and for more than just a day or two.

Think of all the time she spent in pain leading up to this. This short lived pain will be so worth it.

Glad she's doing better!

I keep trying to tell my Grandmother this about her knees. She had one replaced a couple years ago and biotched and moaned the pain. Now, that knee is tip-top. The problem? She needs the other one done and refuses to do it despite knowing the outcome will make things better for her. Stubborn old woman!

Daman~Glad to hear the wife is doing better

Jules,, I know your right,, but you have to understand that this woman IS my life.. she cuts herself, and I bleed... go figure.. so for me, for her to have one second of pain,... kills me.

But I know your right.

Good to hear that she's doing well.

Typically people spend up to a week in rehab. Usually not more than that. We used to have a separate rehab unit that was in our hospital. It was like being discharged from the hospital, and admitted to this place, but it was right there inside. They ended up closing it, which sucks, because the patients loved it.

I know everyone likes to take their time and not leave to early, BUT in all honesty, if she is doing well and getting along, home is the best place to be.

Sure, there's not staff there to help out after you go home, but laying around in the hospital leads to 3 things: DVT (deep vein thrombosis or blood clots in the legs), pneumonia, and infection. You're forced to be more independent at home, which gets you moving and keeps you out of trouble.

Keep us updated Daman. She'll be back home and walking around before you know it.

Latest news... she's being released from the hospital sometime today... Now she goes to the Rehab place here in Aurora... I guess that means that things are progressing as planned...

SO, I guess that's GOOD NEWS

I don't think I could get out of it even if I wanted too...LOL

Would you believe, they set up a 6pm pick up to take her to the Rehab place last night.. it changed to 8pm,, but by the time they got her there it was 10:30pm..

I was so ticked off..

But she finally made it.. and she was starting to settle in last night. I get to go visit her at 11am today..

I guess this is where the real work for recovery begins..

Right it begins here and then when she's gets home [ I'm betting on tues.] she will continue therapy 2-3 times a week for what seems like forever...So far she's doing fine....I know i refused to let my wife wait on me it was important to me to do things myself.....Remember if she wants to do something herself to at least give her the opportity to try it on her own...it's that darn indepence thing...If she needs help she'll ask..

Thanks Cal,, I was over there this evening again..3 times today since it's so close.. The last time, I brought our puppy with me... Oh man,., it was amazing. Both the dog and my wife just lit up..... it was fun.. I put him on the bed with my wife and he just snuggled right up, I have a feeling he's gonna be a big help in her recovery.. just the lovin he gives her will help.

Speaking of recovery,,, the old lady is getting around pretty good,, but she was doing so much that the nurses and the PT people made her stop for the night... I guess they want her to take it a little easier at first..

.... for about 3 days.

We bought it, my dad claimed it bothered his allergies, then made us take it back.

We'll know later, but it appears that there might be a little setback.. when you have this surgery, there is always some drainage involved. She should have stopped that by now and but there is still some. I guess we'll see later tonight or tomorrow.
