Baltimore is expected to release former Pro Bowl cornerback Chris McAlister to save $8 million off its salary cap for next season, hurting its depth.

A few years ago i'd have said "we gotta get that guy" but injuries the last 2 years have robbed him of his abilities and he'll be 32 before the season starts. Just say no.

Yep, his play over the last two years have taken a nose dive in quality.

He's not the player he use to be.

Running backs and corner backs are finished when they hit 30. There are always exceptions, but McAlister isn't one of the lucky ones.

McAlister now equals Terry Cousins.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.

James Walker seems to think we will be looking at Hank Poteat...

Quote:

Here is a name to watch for the Cleveland Browns: Hank Poteat. The eighth-year cornerback is an unrestricted free agent from the New York Jets and we're being told he is a "Mangini guy." New Browns coach Eric Mangini likely will bring in some of his favorite, most-reliable players from the Jets and Poteat is a prime candidate. It also doesn't hurt that the Browns could use some veteran help at the cornerback position.

Poteat would be OK if the contract was reasonable. Cousins was less than adequate and Hollys coming off knee surgery so for stop gap depth type duty IMO Hank would be a good a addition. I'd rather have Jenkins but I want a couple quick LBs and a guard too so somethings gotta give.

I'd rather bring in some UDFA's for depth...

I think Lawson has talent.... Hope he gets a shot.

Here's the story

Ravens release 10-year veteran, three-time Pro Bowl CB McAlister
Associated Press

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens released cornerback Chris McAlister, a 10-year NFL veteran and three-time Pro Bowl player, on Monday.

Career Statistics
Tackles: 339
Interceptions: 26
Touchdowns: 5
McAlister, who started for Baltimore's Super Bowl winning team in the 2000 season, ranks third on the Ravens' career list with 26 interceptions and scored seven touchdowns -- including a 107-yard return of a missed field-goal attempt.

McAlister, 31, started five games last season before being benched, and he was placed on injured reserve Nov. 11 because of an injury to his right knee. McAlister finished the season with three interceptions and 19 tackles.

McAlister was scheduled to make $8 million this year.

"We want to thank Chris for all he did for the Ravens in the past 10 years," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said in a statement released by the team. "He was a major contributor to many big wins, including the Super Bowl."

Well, If healthy, and if he could be gotten at the right number.. beats the hell out of Cousins... I'd take him for a year.
