He is scheduled to be released in July, and is currently serving an indefinite NFL suspension imposed by the Commish. He will turn 29 years old prior to being released, having not played a snap for 2 seasons...nor practicing. I don't see what value he could possibly bring to any team, nor do I see Goodell reinstating him for the 2009 season.
I agree with you I can't see Vick being effective as he once was but it wouldn't surprise me to see Goodell allow him to come back after reinstating pac man.

I wanted to throw up reading the description of how a fighting dog is raised
That's bad enough, now think of the innocent little "non fighting" dogs they throw in the pen with these "trained" fighting dogs.. just to get them the taste of blood.. They use these dogs as fodder...
What of those animals, Anyone wanna tell me that if you take a 120 teenager and stick him in the ring with Mike Tyson at his peak as his sparing partner makes good sport.. That's about what it amounts too.
Anyone on here can like what they want in the way of sports, but you won't ever get me to agree that dog fighting is a good sport... or even a sport at all.
And I don't give a damn how many do it or involved in it.. Still don't make it right in my eyes...

What Vick did was wrong,
U should have just quit typing then .. cause after that nuttin U said makes very much sense at all ..
Quote:
and depending on one's perspective, how wrong he was is up for debate.
up for debate?? .. please ... there is varying degrees and interpretation of how wrong ALMOST EVERYTHING IS .. and I do not no of many people who do not think that dog fighting is PRETTY DAMM BAD ...
appearantly we run in different circles ... and your circle is full of heartless and creul folks that don't care about how other living creatures are treated ...
Quote:
He did his time, and now I hope he is able to put this behind him and lead the Lions out of countless years in the basement.
Good for U .. and I won't belittle U for that opinion .. even though I think its wrong .. I can agree to disagree on this one ...
just a side note .. he STUNK before he spent two years in prison and has not played a down .... good luck to him and to U in cheering for his quest to be more than a greeter at K-Mart working with his brother ... I hope U enjoy following his career ...
Quote:
Why you began your post with 'me making excuses for loser hero, having reading problems, or whatever'--that is hardly relevant to discussion.
Its relevant because U been sticking up for the guy every step of the way .. it started back with the Ron Mexicoo crap and was highlighted by your views during the entire dog fighting thing .. what are we just suppose to forget that??? .. I like BQ ... but if my boy does some dumb ass stuff like your hero did ... I'd be all over him and mad as hell .. but it matters not what Vick does .. U STILL STICK UP FOR HIM LIKE YOUR HIS MOTHER OR SUMPTIN ..
Quote:
But I have read these boards long enough to know that that is your style and how you operate---so I guess its to be expected.
Yup .. bringing up YOUR HISTORY on the subject when RELEVANT is one of the many traits I have on this board ... if thats what U meant here .. THEN YOUR RIGHT ... the rest of my behavior is well documented ..
but in this case U bringing it up is just u trying to down play the relevancy of your past worship of Vick and the fact U thought he should not have even been arrested for this ... ya ... thats not relevant .. just me being an ass ..
Quote:
But my point is that dog-fighting is highly controversial, as is most every other "sport" that involves killing.
read that .. and then actually think about what u said .. then tell me its not ABSURD at best ... it deserves no other respnse .. cause if u can't see it .. theres no hope for U ..
Quote:
And the fact that Vick served his time should mean that he can move on with his life, and if that means playing in the NFL, then I wish him best of luck.
Of course U do .. do u think I expected anything else ... as soon as i saw this thread I knew you'd be here defending him and making assinine comparisions like u always do when it comes to him ..
and if u want to wish luck ... good for U .. i think your goofy for that but .. its your opinion and although I do not agree with it ... no biggie ...
Quote:
I also compared dog fighting to other gruesome spectacles that took place as sport in arenas around the world hundreds and thousands of years ago---this only served to illustrate that violence in sport has been the name of the game for thousands of years. This reference has nothing to do with slavery or genocide---so I am not sure what to make of your Hitler remarks.
my point (witch clearly sailed right over your head ...) was pretty obvious to anyone with a clue ... do apoll and I bet 90% of the folks knew EXACTLY WHAT I WAS DOING ... but i'll xplain it to U ..
i brought up my DUMB ASS examples of things that have gone on THROUGHOUT HISTORY that were WRONG AND BS to show u HOW ABSURD your DUMB ASS EXAMPLES of how "sport" (its not "sport" by the way ... ) ... has been around for thousands of years ..
your trying to JUSTIFY the actions of morons involved in dog fighting in todays society by giving examples of what MORONS did throughout history that was just BRUTAL .... so i gave other examples of other things that have gone on for history .... cause your analogy was that see "its gone on forever so its part of society ... " ... like its "more acceptable" somehow cause others have done it ..
its just a DUMB ASS ANALOGY ...
Quote:
but if I was raised around dogfights, and I came to enjoy it as some people do---then maybe I wouldn't be so disturbed by it.
ok .. so by that analogy .... folks brought up in Africa that went out and rounded up there fellow country man to be taken to ports to be sold ... it would be OK for them to do it today cause thats how they were "brought" up ...
and if someone was brought up in Nazi Germany ... would it be "justiafable" in your eyes if they just wanted to torture and kill Jews or could they do it to any group they hated since it was ion there up bringing?? ..
see how STUPID THAT SOUNDS ...
and psssst .. Slavery has been abolished ... and they no longer have sports involving coliseams and lions and people ... and do u know why?? ..
cause even though at one time they were "acceptable" and a part of the fabric of society .... they were BANNED AND OUTLAWED for various reasons ... I really hope I do not need to explain the relevancy of that one ...
And dude ... if it were up to me .. Vick would have never went to prison .. I would put him and ANYONE INVOLVED IN DOG FIGHTING in a big hole with the dogs they trained and mutilated and let the dogs do the same to them ...
but since its not up to me .. if he gets back int he NFL I would not cheer for him .. hell I didn't cheer for him before the dog fighting .. so why would I now??? ...
will i be upset hes back?? Nope .. out of my control .. but it won't bother me ... even if he becomes a brown ... cause then I will simply not be a Dawg any longer ....

It amazes me the lengths people will go to justify or make excuses for this. They compare apples to oranges and fail to see any difference between domesticated animals and others, not that any animal should be tortured. I'm not surprised by the people doing it, because their thinking on most things is odd to say the least, and they get off on the attention they get for it. Honestly, it says a lot about you as a human being if you support or make excuses for this type of behavior, IMO.

Well, sticking a 120 lb. teenager in a ring with Mike Tyson doesn't really relate. One, they're humans and not dogs. Two, the teenager would most likely just get beat up and scared while the dog would literally be killed. And Three....ok, I don't have a three . Just playing with ya...
Seriously, I think dog fighting is a "sport" by the dictionary definition. Just like surfing, dog/horse racing, skateboarding, cheerleading, checkers and cup stacking are:
- An active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition.
or - Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
If dog/horse racing fits into the second definition, then so does dog fighting. However, if I had to define 'sports' on my own, it would not involve animals in any form (racing, fighting, shows). And I'd also remove most other items listed above too....but we're not defining what is or isn't a sport as I see it in this topic. Just saying overall, the 2nd definition is in the dictionary and I think 'dog fighting' fits in there. Maybe it's semantics but anyway.
And I'm not defending dog fighting. It's a horrible act that should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. And in Vick's case, it was. Although, the dog fighting charges didn't really send him to prision, it was the illegal gambiling ring he was running. Had he just been 'fighting' dogs only, he would probably have spent just 30 days in the slammer.
Once he's released, I think he should be allowed to re-enter the league (pending Godell slapping another year of suspension onto him). He's paid his debt to society. With that being said, I don't see many team lining up to sign him (NOBODY will trade for him with that contract). And he'll most likely get booed every time he touches the ball in every stadium, including his own. And he does deserve that.
I wouldn't want him on the Browns and I wouldn't want him if I was the GM of another NFL team. He'd be a bigger distraction than combining T.O., A-Rod and a bong carrying Michael Phelps. No team wants Michael Vick and the additional media attention. Heck, like Diam said, he was a poor QB prior to getting busted anyway. Two years away from football isn't going to help him. I'd be surprised if he ever plays another down in football. He's just like Bonds right now, no doubt he could help a team but who wants his presence around your team?

Diam, far be it from me to jump in on Tyler's side... but... Quote:
ok .. so by that analogy .... folks brought up in Africa that went out and rounded up there fellow country man to be taken to ports to be sold ... it would be OK for them to do it today cause thats how they were "brought" up ...
Tyler's point isn't that it would then be ok and should be accepted by society in general... his point is that those close to it, those who grew up around it, might not be as disturbed by it or would be more likely to partake in it. I raised the question long ago that if you were born on a southern plantation 200 years ago, would you have owned slaves and most of the self-righteous on this board said no.. in no way would they have owned slaves.. and that's BS and you know it. If grandpa did and dad did and all my uncles did and my friends parents did.. yea, I would have owned slaves... 99.9% sure of it. Whether or not owning slaves was morally right or even legally right is secondary to the fact that... that's what you know.
Quote:
and if someone was brought up in Nazi Germany ... would it be "justiafable" in your eyes if they just wanted to torture and kill Jews or could they do it to any group they hated since it was ion there up bringing?? ..
Again, the question is NOT would it be justifiable in MY eyes, the question is, do I understand why it might be justifiable in THEIRS.... and yes, if that's how they were raised, if that is the example that was set for them by the people they loved.. then yes, I can understand why THEY might think it's ok.
Quote:
and psssst ..
Not to me, I see it quite clearly. At one point, backhanding your wife or your kids for misbehaving was perfectly acceptable.. it is now illegal, but people still do it. And do you know who is most likely to do it? Those who were backhanded as children, those who saw their mom get backhanded.
So while your logic is perfectly sound to me and most right thinking people.. it's illegal, it's immoral, it's cruel, don't do it. Those who grow up around it don't always see it that way.. We THINK that those who grow up in abusive situations should be the LAST people to abuse because they see the damage it can do, but in fact, they are the most likely to abuse.. because that's the model they saw... Doesn't make it right, but it does help to try to understand WHY somebody would do something like that, especially if you hope to teach them to never do it again...

*L* .... U didn't tell me anything I did not all ready know .. i KNEW what Tyler was doing .. I KNEW what his points were about up bringing ...
i think its BS and I could care less ... a little story ,...
my cousin married a guy that was abused as a kid by his dad ... his dad also beat his Mom ... dude beat my cousin before they were married ... her brother beat this a-hole to a pulp 2 or 3 times cause of what he did to his sister .... we BEGGED my cousin not to marry him ... she did anyhow (and her bro was not at the wedding .. imagine that . ) ... well he continues to beat her and she does nuttin ... finally she gets a divorce .. why U may ask ...
cause he wanted kids and she "loved" him enough to take the beatings ... no clue why ... but she did .. well she would not have his child ... cause she would not bring another punching bag into this world for this idiot to pound ....
amazingly enough thats what got her out of this brutal marriage ... cause she knew he was beaten and so he would more than likely beat his children ....
well guess what .. I COULD CARE LESS about someones upbringing .... I COULD CARE LESS ... they can be more acceptable to it ... I DON'T CARE ...
so I'm not really sure what point u thought u were making ... I KNEW EVERYTHING AND UNDERSTOOD it before u posted it ... I JUST DON'T CARE ....
in my eyes ... he made DUMB ASS ANALOGIES that make no sense ... so i did the same ... both his examples and mine were both ABOUT UPBRINGING .... and to me its IRRELIVENT ... and i DON'T CARE!!!!!
but I am sure Ty Ty will be very very happy and enthuastic about having your backing on this ..
TOLERANCE FOR SOME THINGS IS FOR NAMBIE PAMBIES IN MY BOOK ANYHOW!!!!

What's the point of our legal system, if you can't do the time, and come out with the right to make a living? What he did was wrong, but after he does the time, if a team wants to take a chance on him, I will be very upset if he is not allowed back into the league.
How many of you, if you got busted for say, a DUI, and spent 30 days in jail, would come out and be allowed to go back to your job? I'm sure a few wouldn't but I'm going to guess the majority of you would be able to.
Why, if a team wants to take a chance on Vick, should he not be allowed to go back to his career? Go ahead and say how different dog fighting, and the DUI that I used in the example are, but the fact remains, he served the punishment for his crime!

Again going back to your roots and hanging with the wrong crowd (reason to conceal a weapon) again and again bite these successful AA males in the butt! And the NFL gives them counseling but kids/young adults/me included in the day - have that Superman, NOT ME attitude.

Oh ... and just so U know ..
I agree with U on the plantation upbrigning/slave owner question ... I would like to think that I would not own slaves even if my dad and grandpa did ... but it would be naive of me to think that all on my own I would throw out everything my dad and grand pops taught me out the window and come to the conclusion that owning another person would be wrong ...
I and our fellow posters have there views on this based on how we were brought up and what the "moral codes' of our times consisted of ... so our views are far different based on OUR UPBRINGINGS than they would be if we were brought up in that time ...
and also .. I believe slavery may not be a great example .. cause the number of slave owners in the south was alot less than most think it is ... and alot of southerners were actually dead set against it ..
even slave owners varyied greatly in how they treated there slaves ... some treated them like family and they were treated very very well ... and before u all jump me on this one .. I am not defending any slave owners .. or defending anythng to do with "owning" aother human being ... just pointing out sumptin that most folks don't know .. I have done a ton of reading on this and was shocked at what I learned about those times in contrast to what my views were when I was relatively uninformed about the subject ..... in both a positive and negative way ..
anyhow i agree with u there ... i would like to think I wouldn't .. but i and every one of us very well may have ..

There are plenty of rapists, child molesters, and murderers who do their time and get out. As long as your fine with all of them getting back in the league if that were the case then your aren't being hypocritical.

I've wondered this myself... if he isn't allowed back (or nobody will take him back) and he goes to work at a car wash or a landscaping company, will those places be picketed and harrassed? Or are people just upset that he still has a chance to go back and make A LOT of money? I honestly think that is what gets most people, not that he shouldn't be able to work, but that he shouldn't be allowed back in the spotlight and the fame and the fortune... As if his punishment should continue and he should live out his days on a meager income with no spotlight.
That's not really how our legal system works, once you've done your time and paid your price you should be allowed to go back and earn a living.. even if it's a really good living.

I don't know if I could stay with my company, but there wouldn't be any violation to me getting another job in my current INDUSTRY.. and that's all he wants, the Falcons said he isn't welcome back.. fine. But should the NFL say he isn't allowed to play any where?

I agree with you. That guy has lost his chance for fame and fortune and millions of dollars. Why should criminals be rewarded with that ? I don't think anyone can compare the NFL to some sort of normal career or job. The majority of jobs in this country do not pay millions of dollars to be a role model for children, the face of a business, or spokesperson for ads, or looked up to/admired/worshipped/etc. Dude had lost his right to do this, he should have some normal job bagging groceries or something. Having said that, there are many money grubbing business men in the NFL, so he will probably have a job somewhere. However WRONG that is.

For the amount of time he is in prison, yes, he has lost this right.
Once released, he has every right to work for whatever corporate entity wishes to pay him millions.

1. Nobody is "rewarding" him with anything. A contract to play in the NFL has to be earned. If a team wants to take on the bad press of signing and playing Mike Vick, then that's their decision. He has a skill set that fits with the NFL (well, we could debate the skill set I suppose - considering his last two seasons). And like we've mentioned before, I don't think we'll have much to worry about him playing again. He's nuclear waste at this point. And by the odd chance he does get a contract, it will be a vet minimum...not nearly the multi-million dollar deal he currently has. 2. He's a football player. There is nothing in an NFL contract that says he has to be a role model. It's up to the parent to explain what a role model should be. And I think most parents will go out of their way to explain what POS this guy was (and may still be). 3. Fame? Well, I don't think he'll EVER live this down. I'm sure he'll be heckled from the stands, while at the grocery store, sitting in a restaurant or at a dentist appointment. Believe me; he'll never reach the good kind of fame again. 4. If a company wants to put his face on their product, however stupid that is, it's their choice. I don't we'll have to worry about this anyway.
Look, after he's served his time, he has a right to do everything as he did before. With that being said, his dirty name will stay with him as long as....as long as....that disease that Ron Mexico had (meaning, forever). And that will hurt his chances of doing the things you listed.

At what point do you lose this chance?

He's not being rewarded for being a criminal, he's being rewarded for being a football player... who also committed some crimes and paid his price.
Quote:

He would get paid millions of dollars to play football.. the rest of your list is just a societal byproduct.
Quote:
Dude had lost his right to do this,
Not according to the constitution. He has lost his right to own a gun, he may have even lost his right to vote.. but I'm pretty sure he would still be well within his rights to have a successful career at whatever he chose, football included.
Quote:

Why? What if he gets a job delivering pizzas? Is that ok with you? What if from that job he opens his own pizza place, then starts delivering, then opens another and another and another until he is filthy rich like the dude that owns Papa Johns and his face is on the news and in ads during the super bowl and he is held in high regard, especially by the black community, as a guy who overcame great odds to build a corporate empire? Now he's rich and famous and the face of a business and he's held up as a role model for kids..... Should we tell him he lost that right and take it all away from him and make him go bag groceries again?

He didn't have to hurt them though. He did it for sport, for money he didn't need. He also killed them. No point in that at all. Just cruel. totally different from fighting a human being. More akin to torturing and killing a human being.

You forgot the part where these guys will go into people backyards and steal their dogs for their fighting dogs to practice on.
I'm all for someone getting a 2nd chance but if I did something like this, no way in hell will my job let me back and if Vick is allowed back into the NFL, I want the Browns to stay has far away has they can from him. I'll hate to stop cheering for a team just because they sing a guy like Vick.

Dude. It's nice that you can quote me line for line and debate every sentence, but I don't have the patience to read that. If you want to debate with me then type a paragraph of your own thinking. Cuz I just don't read the endless quoting BS. Bottom line, I don't think he deserves to play in the NFL. I think it's a privilege and not a right. Legally, sure, he can play in the NFL again. But I don't think he belongs there, nor do I think he will be accepted (see punchsmack's post, he is right on).

I actually left it out on purpose .. thats sick ... Fido getting maimed and literally torn apart for "training" purposes ... was gonna tell Ammo if his friends pup ever comes up missing ... theres a good chance it may have been used as "training fodder" .. but thats OK .. we should "understand" that as its not their faults .. it was there up bringing ...

Food for thought:
Do we really believe that the NFL will allow Vick to go to a team with a "DAWG POUND"?

The NFL won't care because they have no balls. The Browns might care. If they don't, the fans sure as hell will. He would never survive on second in Brownstown.

I believe Vick has enough left in the tank to play a few more years in the NFL, and i also think that he served his time and will get an opportunity to be a football player again.
If Pacman got another chance and Leonard Little got another chance, then I believe Vick will get another chance.
Despite the way you continually demonize Vick on this board, he will get his chance whether you like it or not. I hope he makes the best of his opportunity and turns his life around. He was an exciting player to watch and its important for him to put all this behind him and play ball.

I didn't read the whole thread but if my comments resemble somene elses or others, this country is built on giving people second chances and I for one can not stant the crimes he committed and am a huge dg lover, have rescued my fair shae but he does have the right, since it is our counties makeup to be allowed to try and gain employment.
Now Atlanta doesn't want him an are trying to getsome sort of compensation - I don't see this happening but I respect them fro trying.
I think he will end up on a roster, and his talent i worthy of such, but is e really worth t, people will boycott, fans will not go to games, basically he is going to be a headache, but the NFL is all about making money and if a team thinks he will or can help them win he will be signed.
I will say this I don't expect him to do anything and if a team takes a chance he won't be around long, he has aged and his legs made him so it is only a matter of time when he will be sub par at best and I feel that will be sooner then later.
Do the Browns look at him? Hell no

I started reading through this thread and I actually started getting extremely upset about how people think he DESERVES a 2nd chance in the NFL......I didn't bother reading them all so I hope I don't repeat, offend, etc..etc...anybody, but I am definitely gonna give my 2 cents on some of these responses.....What he did to them dogs is just flat out wrong...it's not like killing a pig for bacon, or killing a cow for a hamburger....people do that to survive...they have a choice to be a vegetarian if they want....is killings pigs and cows right..??? no....not at all.....but we don't beat, burn, maime, or torture them first.... .....It takes a sick, twisted POS to do something like this PERIOD.....it wasn't a mistake, it didn't happen by accident....he did it over an over and over again..... Playing in the NFL is a privelage...your expected to act a certain way, to be a role model...that is just what comes with playing.....if you don't want to be that, then find something else to do...it's no different that working at McDonald's...your expected to make a Big Mac...if you don't, then your a$$ gets fired.....Roger had better be careful how he handles this situation....to many players think they are above the NFL, and think they can get away with murder...literally.....if he doesn't get a control of it soon, it will be too late.....In my opinion, you get hit with a felony, your done...PERIOD.....sure you have the right to do what you want, if you want to still play football, move to Canada.....If you ask me, what goes around, comes around.....he should have his %$# tied up and set on fire....see how his punk ^%$ likes it then.... .. Again.... .....strictly MY OPINION.....!!!!!!!......

Yup .. guys like U and Ty Ty and Phil will be whining about how Mr. Dck IS THE VICTIM .. *L* ...
When did I ever say anything in this thread to even remotely imply that?
Dude's a run-of-the-mill P.O.S. ... last I checked, there's nothing that says you can't be one and play in the NFL.

I strongly believe that people are a product of their upbringing and their environment. Rights and wrongs, thoughts, morals, etc. all develop early and continue to develop overtime based on the models and examples that are set in front of them.
To what degree can that be undone? I don't know. But I do know this. It can't really to any degree justify actions. It can only explain them. There is no justification for what Vick did. But if anyone thinks upbringing didn't play a role in it ... well, then you're a ... man, what's that word ... starts with a "d" and rhymes with "colt" ? ... damn, it will come to me...
It sounds to me like the argument should be more of did the punishment fit the crime than should he get a second chance. It seems like an awful small amount of time for someone to serve based on what he did. He should be doing more time ... then there wouldn't even be a discussion about getting back in the NFL.
But I agree with Diam in that he'll have to earn it. And he probably won't. And it will be a moot point anyway. But if he does end up making a team and playing and maybe even as a starter ... well, what can you do? He served his time and afterward as long as he isn't breaking the law, he can pretty much do whatever he wants. Do I think he would deserve to? Nah, I don't think the punishment fit the crime.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I dont want or could ever conceive him being a Brown (never liked him to start) but this is as true of a statement as could be said and pretty much should wrap this thread up.
Well said Peen!!!!

He can be let out of prison but doesn't mean he needs to play in the NFL. He has a college degree, no ? There's a zillion other jobs he can do.
