Yes, compensatory picks are given in the year following the year that you lose FA's, based on a formula of what you lost vs what you gained.

Hello fellow Browns fans. I'm new to the board here, although I have been lurking for a few years. Just thought I would finally take the time to register and weigh in. This thread seemed as good as any.
I'd like to throw a name out there. David Bruton. I think he's a guy the Browns could grab in the late 2nd or early 3rd round (possibly even later) of the draft and could step in immediately as a starter in the defensive backfield.
I've been fortunate enough to watch just about every snap of his college career, and I believe him to be the real deal.
Anyhow, just wanted to throw that out there. I hadn't heard his name mentioned yet in the threads I have viewed.
Looking forward to getting to know the folks here and talking Browns with you.

Welcome to the board, DAWG!
I was just thinking. Since the compensatory draft selections are based on the said formula for free agents lost and free agents gained, does the new regime probably have that in mind? Like is it possible that they are just sitting back, allowing this to happen given what little is available at the right price, that they are going to maybe not sign any big names on the market hoping to get compensatory selections?
Other than that, go ahead and overpay Philly. For some reason I just would not like the idea of putting Jones at FS. Isn't he a bit out of place there?
Politicians are puppets, y'all. Let's get Geppetto!

Welcome aboard, MBL.
I'm sure there are plenty of decent safety candidates worth taking in the first 4 rounds. But I'm sure most agree w/ me in wishing to keep Jones for a reasonable price and addressing other positions such as LB, OL, RB, & WR in the first 4 rounds and then getting to address safety in free agency &/or the draft next year. As of right now, we do not have a 3rd round pick.

We wouldn't get any compensatory picks until next year for this year's FAs, IIRC.
Also, it's based a lot on the guys you lose. We're not necessarily losing upper-echelon guys, so we'd only get very low compensatory picks. If we're sitting back so we can pounce on a guy that's available at the end of the 5th round so he can be our starter, then we have some BIG problems.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Philly has a reputation of being a very well run org. They have built thru the draft with a sprinkling of FA's. Like everyone they have made mistakes along the way, but,if that org.deems Jones worthy of big bucks and ours don't.Well,I'll go along with the proven track record, instead of the unknown.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

I want good players. Andra wasn't a good player. He was a great guy, but he had little value as a backup because he doesn't have the speed and athleticism to be a good special teamer. Sean Joens is a good player. He isn't great in coverage, but he is a good player. That is why I'd like to see us keep him, but I won't be mad if we don't. I like how hard he plays and I like that he is an enforcer against the run, but if he wants elite money, I say bye.

I think Philadelphia fans will be extremely disappointed going from Brian Dawkins to Sean Jones, if Jones was to sign with them.

Who do I want on the team? Players that can produce. I'm not in luv with any of these guys.. Lemmie say this simply ..for years I have seen too posts by people giving props to players who are medicore...or backups at best. There are very few players on the defensive end that impress me..U may not want to believe this but right now only two would I suggest are locked in as starters..and of the two, there's one I would still upgrade if it were me.....the rest ..well they all can be replaced.. If I like a player I say so..if I don't I voice it but I give reasons why... I don't need to go down a list but as I look at this team there are a bunch of positions that could use a upgrade..

j/c sean jones signed with the eagles, one year deal. maybe that's something we didn't want to give him, who knows. Quote:
The Eagles Friday announced they have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent safety Sean Jones on a one-year contract.
A second-round draft choice of Cleveland in 2004, Jones (6-1, 225) has played in 60 games (44 starts) during his four-year career with the Browns, recording 286 tackles and three forced fumbles. The 27-year-old Jones ranks third among NFL safeties behind Ed Reed and Oshiomogho Atogwe with 14 interceptions since 2006. He is also one of just four players in the NFL to have at least four interceptions in each of the last three seasons. The others are new teammate Asante Samuel, the Packers' Charles Woodson and the Ravens' Ed Reed.
In 2008, Jones appeared in 12 games and recorded 69 tackles and four interceptions, including one at Philadelphia on December 15th. He underwent knee surgery following the first game of the season vs. Dallas, and was sidelined for the next four contests. Jones missed his rookie campaign after suffering a knee injury in a May minicamp, but rebounded in 2005 to appear in all 16 games and led the team with 20 special teams tackles. The following year, Jones was named the Browns' starting strong safety and went on to post consecutive seasons with 100-plus tackles and five interceptions from 2006-07. Jones also earned a spot on Sports Illustrated''s Dr. Z's All-Pro team following the 2006 season.
A former standout at the University of Georgia, Jones earned first-team All-America honors as a senior in 2003, after serving as the team's defensive captain. A two-time All-Southeastern Conference selection, Jones finished his collegiate career with 250 tackles, seven interceptions and a school-record four blocked kicks.
The Atlanta, GA, native attended Westlake High School. As a senior quarterback in 1999, Jones threw for 2,490 yards and 31 touchdowns, while rushing for 806 yards and 11 scores. He also notched 13 interceptions as a defensive back, en route to all-state and All-USA Today honorable mention honors.

Guess they weren't too whipped out on him, only one year?
How does a league celebrating its 100th season only recognize the 53 most recent championships?

The fact that the contract he accepted was a one year contract is telling.
I'm kind of glad he isn't back. He never became what he should of, maybe it was his knee or his motivation, but he just never became that S we needed.
GL Sean.
you had a good run Hank.

Witten and Cooley must already be licking their chops to play against Jones twice a year.
I really liked Jones but his lack of ability to cover really hurt us, especially on big plays.
Unless we pull a rabbit out of our hat, we're likely to have a worse safety tandem this year (Pool/Adams) than last. But hopefully we're more on the lookout now for a more complete player at safety.

We have more then a handful of serviceable starters. We need a safety and two LBs on defense. We could use a upgradeat corner as well. The biggest thing is adding needed depth.

would this be someone we would look at as a stop gap to help us out since we lost jones?
BENGALS RELEASE SAFETY JACKSON The Cincinnati Bengals have released safety Dexter Jackson, an 11-year veteran who missed most of last season with injuries.
Jackson played the past three seasons for the Bengals, starting 28 games. A thumb injury forced him to miss most of the first half of last season, and he was placed on injured reserve for the second half after hurting his hamstring in practice.
Jackson ended up playing only three games last season.
The Bengals also cut three first-year players Friday who were members of their practice squad for part of last season. They were guard James Blair, cornerback Marcus Brown and defensive end Victor DeGrate.

Now with Curry doubtful, I'm leaning toward Jenkins,...he's only a couple of pounds short of being a Safety,....

How in the H did we let Jones go? We are already weak at DB and we let Jones go to the freakin Eagles. What gives with this admin? Boy, if this doesn't have all the earmarks of a rebuilding year... again. I am flat fed up.

If you think Jones was good, then you need to go back and watch the games.
He was good if you don't count his ability to leave TE's wide open.

Watch out for Rashad Johnson FS from Alabama...he could become 1 of our 2nd rounders now. He´s a younger Brian Russell Coach Saban went out of his way and labeled this guy the smartest player he ever coached....does Saban have any ties with Mangini? Anybody know? Do they still "like" each other? If he´s a buddy he will be ours if they have beef cause of Bellichick then we won´t draft him even if he´s Eric Turner

Kevin Ellison. Projected 4th round. Scouting reports say he is very instinctive. Problem is he is a little on the slow side. I think he has already had 3 knee surgeries. Not sure exactly.
I would love to get Eric Berry in next years draft. Safety out of Tenn. He will be a junior next season and if he declares will go before Mays. Unfortunately if we get him it means we had a pretty crappy season.

I never said he was good... but he wasn't half bad either. Guess we could always see if Ralph freakin Brown is available.

No, he wasn't half bad. He was 2/3rds bad. His 3 primary jobs were support the run, cover TEs, and make the calls in the secondary. He only supported the run well.

Hey coach, hopefully your doing well.
I thought Pool being the FS was the guy who did the secondary calls. I'm pretty sure Russell did the calls when he was here. But yeah, he didn't seem to cover very well. Good luck Sean.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Yeah I would really like Taylor Mays next year but Ellison could be a good 4th round pickup. I mean he maybe slow but you can't be a perfect prospect and taken in the 4th round If I remember right he is a pretty big safety too.
