This goes down 1 or 2 ways (if they do it right....which means my way..lol ) 1. If we are going to the draft we just about have to take Jenkins (unless some of the sky is falling folks are right and we really are rebuilding). The reason I say this is most think he's a Pro Bowl Saftey year 1, and if you want to win now he's the only one I wouldn't mind starting day 1 and feel good about it. The problem is # 5 is too high for him, and I don't like taking reaches when your drafting that high......although it can be said that most of the guys talked about here as our selection would be a reach at # 5 in most drafts......this one is bad light at the top. Anyway, in a perfect world we trade down to 7 or 8 pick up a extra pick and draft Jenkins or one of the tweeners......but I digress. 2. We draft one of the guys you all are talking about, and sign a vet safety as insurance.........maybe we are calling Adams our insurance policy?? I like Jenkins, but I don't know if he's going to make a bigger impact than one of the tweeners would.........although I think he's alot safer pick. I have a feeling this FO is a lot closer to "rebuilding" than we would like to believe. I think the biggest difference is that unlike previous regimes, this FO has some pieces to work with, and thus the "rebuild" won't be nearly as drastic as what we've seen in the past. Therefore, I honestly think that we probably go with option B, and start a 2nd/3rd rounder and develop them as we go.
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

I hesitate to post when deep player evaluations take place...but I gotta say...
It would seem to me that Jones and Pool play the same position...Pool's head is dinged up (concussion) but his body (knees) is fine...plus...it has been said numerous times that the guy is possibly the best athlete on the team.
We DID seem to play better with Pool/Adams...
Jones would not have stayed here as a "backup"...Pool is the better athlete and "risk".
Pretty simple to me....I liked Jones...but he may be done.
I'd like to hear Vers' point on this...wonder where he went?
Hey you football guys...what is your take on Pool? Please do not mention Jones when doing so...just stick with the guy who is still here.
CoachB...you have any info on Pool?

This is what I find odd ......
Jones got a 1 year deal .... and his backup got a 3 year deal.
That tells me that there might be something lurking behind the scenes as far as Jones is concerned.

Negative. It was probably the only offer on the table, and for that kind of money, he's probably lucky to get it.

See, that's my point. Just because this coach/staff dumped Jones doesn't make it a good move or the right move. But many will nod their heads and say, "Yep, EM knows best, Jones must suck". When that ain't necessarily true.
What's more likely is the Browns thought that Jones would have to come crawling back and they'd get him on the cheap. It might have worked. But it didn't. So now we need another player that 2 weeks ago we didn't need to worry about.
It could also be that the signing of Adams to a 3-year deal may mean that the staff feels that Pool at SS, (Jones' position), and Adams at FS, (where Pool has to play when Jones is in because Jones doesn't fit at FS) is a better tandam than Pool at FS and Jones at SS. In shorter terms, Pool/Adams > Jones/Pool. There may be some talents in which Jones is superior to Adams. But it's possible that across the board Adams talents are more evenly distributed among the position's responsibilities and he is more consistant in them than is Jones.
If that is true of their thinking, and the moves of letting Jones go and resigning Adams make it look like that's a strong possibility, then they are in no dire need of a starting SS immediately. Still need depth.
Pool/Adams did pretty well in '08 when Jones was injured. I'm not the only one who saw that.
I agree that there is a contingent that goes along with everything the coach does. I'll add that there is another one that is suspicious of eveything the coach does. It's probably been noted that I would fit into the first catagory more than the second.
That would be, mostly I believe, because when they make a decision I first try to understand why they did what they did. If I can make some logical sense of it then I'm usually ok with it even if I don't completely agree with it. I feel it's a better viewpoint or position for me than being suspicious of each move and looking for the negative ramifications of their decisions.
It's not that I don't see the negative aspects, but if it makes some logical sense then it just does. That doesn't mean to me that it's guaranteed to work out for the better, but it has a chance.
I know you weren't talking about me specifically, nor am I speaking specifically about you. But you mentioned the one crowd so I felt that in a fair and balanced manner the other should be mentioned as well.

I'll admit,I don't understand why the Browns let Sean Jones walk and resigned Mike Adams. I always felt Sean Jones had a couple things going against him.......
a) How many different D-coordinators did Jones play under as a Brown? Tucker, Grantham and was there another? b) He played in a divison with Ed Reed and Troy Polumalu. No matter if Jones played at a high level, his play was going to be overshadowed by those 2. c) Not being healthy in 2008.
IMHO,Jones played at a Pro Bowl level in 2007. He didn't rack up 14 INTS for nothing over the last 3 years. Sometimes he didn't tackle as well as he should and his coverage wasn't consistant. But he was a playmaker. Probally the best saftey the Browns had since 99. Its just funny how the Eagles decided to replace a Pro Bowl S as in Dawkins with a guy they fill could his spot. If Mike Adams was a FA would the Eagles sign him to replace Dawkins, probally not. This move could come back to haunt the Browns. I'm surprised the Browns haven't took a peek at Roy Williams.

Duly noted. I'd also like to say I try not to look at what a new coaching staff/FO is doing with a negative eye but rather with a cautious eye.
I'm not a huge fan of the Winslow trade but I understand why it was done. The same with the signing of Robert Royal at TE. It doesn't send me over the moon but I have no problem with it.
The fact that I think that we may have been better off keeping Jones as opposed to letting him fly the coop seems to have upset some of the locals...... Not sure why. My guess is that, as usual, the more narrow minded find it easier to group people as either haters or lovers. Ahh....if only it were that easy.
As is almost always the case this move will be better judged about 9 months from now. Let's hope that EM and the boys are right. Because if I'm a better judge of talent than they are the Browns are in real trouble......

Coaches and GM's put a value on a player and if the price exceeds that value,,, they don't care if he goes away.
The other way to put it instead of "they tried to get him on the cheap" could just as easily be, they didn't want to overspend on a guy.
I guess it's all in how you look at it.
Didn't Philly only sign him to a 1 year deal? if that's the case, there must be some serious concerns either about his ability or health.. or both! As far as I'm concerned, I'm thinking the Browns knew something about that knee.....

"unless they absolutely love someone that they feel will fall to us in the 3rd .. and thats a HUGE GAMBLE to fill a hole with a 3rd rnd pick"
Very Big Gamble - considering we don't have a 3rd round pick
Dawgglover05...there is a fine line. It all depends how you would define betterment.
Distractions over contract? Dedication to physical rehab but not so much dedication to Team meetings and play.
One Dimensional? He was a liability to the run game much more than an asset to the pass game.
Knees have him playing on borrowed time.
Throwing the team under the bus for his ... piercing and Staph infection that followed
The 50th pick in this draft and what he will bring to the team in the future.
You add that all up and guess what Team w/Royal and all the benefits vs. Team with KW2 - we just upgraded.
and again that is simply JMHO anyone can have theirs.

just curious, anyone have anything on Butler from the Giants? I read where he stopped in for a visit, so I wonder if it's a matter of money or lack of interest on our part.

You got a problem with what I said then say something. Throwing out half a dozen smilies is fairly weak. Hell, I thought the only guy that resorted to massive smilie usage was Daman....... eo.....If it isn't apparent that my mind is much more open to new things than yours is then I really can't help you. Do I think you are narrow-minded? Yes, in the respect that you think you are always right. Can't get a whole lot narrower than that, my good man. Have a good rest of the weekend, my friends.

Sorry, but that was the most hilarious statement I've seen in a while. You have pounced on anyone saying anything that wasn't negative about Mangini. You label people, and constantly argue against anything even slightly positive about this new coaching staff. So I found it funny for you to make such a statement. I've made some comments about liking some of the situations taking place and you always come back negative to either me or anybody else. If you don't have an arguement, you fall back on your favorite thing, grouping people and naming them. You argue if you disagree with someone as if their opinion is somehow less important than yours. Then if they reply you throw out that everyone has an opinion and if you don't agree with them they are somehow not giving your opinion weight. Bottom line is you love to think you are always right, and when questioned you label. You have shown no sign of giving Mangini and company a fair shake. For the record and so you don't come back with your usual "Mangini lover" type label for me. I'm not sold on Mangini either as a coach, but what I do like and use to form my opinion is his methods , so far. Have at it, I'm sure you got some spin for my reply.

I can buy that. I haven't read all your posts but to some people (not talking about the two you are responding to) tend to think if you question anything a new coach does your being overly negative.
Look how many people loved Savage right until he got canned. I might be wrong but some who were doubting him were getting blasted.
I don't know what to think about Mangini yet. I know I don't love or hate him at this point. I also know that I'm not about to give him the benefit of the doubt on anything. I will judge him on a case by case basis.
We are not a better team without Winslow. I don't buy that argument one bit. He is one of the best receiving TE's in the league. To me that overrides what Royal brings. Having said that, I think it was a great trade. Winslow is too much of a health risk. He also has a me first attitude which is something I hate. If what I understand of the trade is correct we will receive a minimum of a 3rd and 5th. If Winslow lights it up it might go as high as two 2nds?
If we can get more production in our receiving corps. we shouldn't lose too much. If not, short term the trade will hurt.

Just how do I label people? Look back and you'll see I'm one of the few that always says that just because you like someone doesn't mean you're a "lover" and just because you disagree with or don't care for a player doesn't make you a "hater". On this one my friend, you are, as my Dad used to say, "So full of crap your eyes are brown". And if you had actually read any of my posts you would see that I have said more than once that while I did not like the Winslow trade I fully understand it. (Of course, now we have no one on offense that can actually catch a pass but that may get rectified in the Draft). The same with the Royal signing, I'm not in love with it but I can see the sense in it. As far as not signing Jones, well, I would have signed him because now we almost have to blow a pick on a Safety. But that is the Coach's call so he'll have to live with it. I have never said someone's opinion is less important than mine. That's for guys like you and eotab. I do give more weight to some people's opinions when I read them but that does not make them more or less important. At least not to me. If you do that, well, that's your cross to bear. I love to think I'm always right? Coming from a guy who is basically calling me a liar and telling me I'm wrong when all I'm doing is stating an opinion, well, that's rich...... Since I've never labeled anyone except mac a "lover" of anyone (C'mon, anyone who was on here back then knows mac was, indeed, a Couch-lover) your assertion that I'm gonna label you a Mangini-Lover is a total fabrication. Not spinning anything here, dude, just laying out the facts. You can use them, abuse them, or ignore them. Makes no difference to me.

I believe you're wrong on the compensation for Winslow. I believe it's a 2nd this year and a 5th next year. There has been some rumbling that it's a conditional 5th but I doubt it would go higher than a 3rd. And since Berea apparently thinks football is in a Condition Orange they're not talking.......

crazy...Isn't this rich coming from you, the one who had a "man crush" on Kelly Holcomb.
Couch is still the only QB to lead the Browns to the playoffs since returning to the NFL in 99...but that's just a history lesson now.... ...mac

Crazie...HISTORY is not your best subject, huh?
Craz, tell us what year it was that the Browns last made the playoffs?
Just the facts as we grow older year by year, hoping we make it back to the playoffs.

Again, nothing solid yet, but speculation is draft pick.
I see the names people have mentioned... Moore 6' 220 ,Mizzu
Bruton 6' 2 219 ND
There are other names..
Louis Delmas 5' 11 197 Western Michigan
Darcel McBath 6'1 199 Texas Tech
Patrick Chung 5'11 207 Oregon
But here's the guy they could be looking at.. Sean Smith 6' 4 214 Utah..considered a tweener..he isn't considered to have the quickness and agility to be a corner..but is viewed as a safety.

He actually measured in at 6' 4" and 214...Ran a 4.53...
I guess with only Adams and Pool here we need to be looking at Safeties unless we sign another...
I really hope we put Pool up on the LOS...I hope Ryan sees that...
Smith's a borderline Round One player...Which means we need to use the 36 pick if he's still there cause he won't last long after that...I'd be OK with that...But would rather wait till 50 for one of these two...
Moore...Missouri--6' 221...4.49 Pro Day 40... Rashad Johnson...Bama...5' 11" 203...4.56 Combine 40...
I think the Combine was a misleading track for some reason...I look at "Projected 40's and almost everyone was a tenth or worse slower...Then beat the Projected's at the Pro Days...
We need to get better UP THE GUT...AND DEEP...
I ain't worried about the DL right now...The changes needed are the ILB and Safeties...
Bring Pool UP...Draft the FS...And get a Barton in here...There's the changes needed...
I see Crabtree being there at 5 and I do everything I can to move down to 7 (Oak) or 8 (Jax)...And take the 39 or 40 pick for it...And that's WITH or WITHOUT Edwards still here come draft day...Nicks or Britt are the 2 receivers I'd go after...Nicks is gonna go Late First...Britt will be there at 39/40...
We can systematically do this...And add serious talent THIS year via the DRAFT and NOT FA...
How's this strike ya'???
Brown OLB at 7 or 8 Robinson RG at 36 Britt WR at 39/40 Moore or Johnson FS at 50
Can we swing the 43 from Frisco for DA???...49 from Chicago???
Jennings...RB???
What about Edwards to the Jets at 17???
Butler CB??? Maualuga ILB???
I don't care what anyone says...If that POS Edwards don't wanna be here...TRADE HIS ASS NOW...Get someone in here that can catch a damn football CONSISTENTLY...But not for less than a MID FIRST cause we can TAG HIS ASS and get it in 2010...
Go Browns!!!

It appears they are looking at a safety so they better get one fairly early.. The thing that bothers me with Pool are the concussions..him being at the LOS means he's exposed to take more hits..if he didn't have those, I wouldn't be concerned.
How's this strike ya'???
Brown OLB at 7 or 8 Robinson RG at 36 Britt WR at 39/40 Moore or Johnson FS at 50 Give or take a flip flop of a couple of players...but you left out MLB..right now, today we need one..this is really stretching , because we just don't have enough picks to handle all the holes..
What about Edwards to the Jets at 17???
Butler CB??? Maualuga ILB??? Gotta do something..maybe we can get some comp pick ..we are going to have to trade someone...DA/Edwards..one or both..

Well, is that only if we want to fill so many holes this offseason? I'm just as impatient as the next guy and want us to fill our problem areas as soon as possible. However, I also don't want to be unloading guys now when we could potentially get a lot more value for them at a later time.
Then again, it's best to get something that you know you can get right now than just cross your fingers and hope you can get something more later.

Speculation is draft pick - which can be used to select a player during the draft, or could be traded.
Maybe someone trades up to #5 by tossing in a safety with some picks?

The Steelers trade us Polamalu and the 32nd pick for our no. 5 (so they can select a kicker) and a half-eaten sandwich.

My sentence might have sounded more desperate than I intended but the fact is we have no starting MLB..no starter at SS/FS..whatever position needs to be filled since Jones is out.. I know they can move Pool there but do you really want to with his problems of getting concussions? I say get a SS in the draft and leave Pool at FS..
But I'm more than a little concerned with MLB..if they stay @ 5 and Curry is there thats fine..but what is he isn't? If they could drop several times and be in the 10-15 range , you can take Maua..but I would never bank on that going down. Its still early but something needs to happen sooner than later.
And what if they can't drop down? Man it will handcuff them as to what options are there.

DA and Edwards have no higher value than right now.
This is a pretty weak QB class this yr. Stafford and Sanchez are pretty much it. Freeman MAY go in the second round, but in better yrs., he would probably be a later round pick. DA has value THIS YR, becuase of that, Next yr. the QB class is stronger. Edit: Also, there seem to be some pretty big questions marks about BOTH Stafford and Sanchez as well, especially Sanchez. There seems to be quit a few scouts out there that beleive Sanchez schould have stayed another yr. This also helps the Browns and the Value that others place on DA.
As for Edwards, this is his contract yr year right? If that is the case, and I believe it is, than the ONLY way we keep him next the yr., is to franchise him. I don't know about you, but I don't want to franchise a player that has NO DESIRE to be a Cleveland Brown. A team that traded for him this yr., would more than likely be able to work out a long term deal with him immediately or even wait and see if his dropsees continue or improve with different surroundings. If they do improve, they can then work on a contract.
By everything I have heard on here, Edwards DOES NOT WANT TO STAY IN CLEVELAND. If that is really the case, we need to go ahead and let him go as long as we are justly compesated, low 1st or high 2nd + lower round pick, MAY be enough. Otherwise, just keep him and let him prove to all the other NFL teams that he is worth big money when his contract expires.
IMHO, trading DA and Edwards has it's highest value right NOW.

And let me reiterate something that just really baffles me big time..we cannot seem to sign a FA MLB worth squat..U would think since that hole exists , that Kok/Mang would be after several..while I hear crickets chirping..again.. That hole doesn't need to be staring the Browns going into the draft,..if it is, it's going to dictate how the selections go..

Just my ignorance, but who would fit the bill as a quality MLB that is or was out there in FA?
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I know there's not a big name..but one target Heath Farwell went back to his own team,Minney.. I thought Barton was/is leaning toward signing..but I can't find out anything.. Other than maybe 2 more guys it isn't deep.

But that doesn't jive with what you said above.. we had Farwell here and he said he really liked it he just decided to stay with his old team and Barton is still undecided but appears to be leaning toward Cleveland... so there are 2 out there, we are talking to both, lost out on one because he chose to stay home... how is that crickets chirping? Sounds like they are doing what they can without breaking the bank for a midlevel player...

Yeah two guys..thats it for a hole as big as Edwards ego? It corelates to what I said..not a whole lot happening on that front.. If Barton doesn't sign, that cricket will turn into a Cicada.

I´d take Bowens over Barton at ILB...and I think some are mistaken reports about him with Barton, which I never saw a snippet about
Bowens is a converted DE and thus even at his age has some upside...and he can blitz from there evidenced by his 4sacks as backup last season....it was reported that he´s as good as signed, Barton otoh is A.Davis redux.....signing BOTH Bowens and Barton makes no sense imho because it would pretty much shut the door on B.Bell and Williams
I really think B.Bell on running downs and Bowens on passign downs > Barton...Barton is below average, that´s for sure...so, considering our options I´d give B.Bell a shot...should he completely fail, we still have Williams and Bowens who maybe would be a little worse than Barton...but much cheaper....
anayway I think about our ILB situation...Barton doesn´t make a whole lot of sense

I'd bet Barton's a Brown by next week...
Which is fine by me...He's SOLID in the middle of a 95 Rushing Yards a game Defense...
I'd spew if we could get to 95 a game...
Go Browns!!!

Look how many people loved Savage right until he got canned.
I was never overly impressed or under whelmed by Opie .. I think he was fired strictly cause he emberrased Lerner with the e-mail to the fan and the KW thing .... I think Opie did an OK job with his primary job of getting talent on the team ...
I wish he got another couple of years to work on his "management" skills and see what he could have done with the team .. but I have no probs with him being gone either .. I think he gets unfairly railed on in here .. he was OK .. he was not near as bad as most make him out to be ...
hopefuly Coke can do a better job ... but he certainly could do alot worse ...

We are not a better team without Winslow. I don't buy that argument one bit. He is one of the best receiving TE's in the league. To me that overrides what Royal brings.
don't forget to add in the 2nd rnd pick we get for KW this year ... everyone forgets about that part of it when evaluating it ..
as far as KW vs Royal ... are we a better "team" ... maybe, maybe not ..
obviously KW is a better reciever than Royal and Royal is the better blocker .... and KW wins that in the overall as his recieving skills far outweigh Royals blocking skills ... .. so that goes without saying ..
BUT ... how many TO's is Royal going to save us cause he didn't know where to line up .. how many PI's penalties is Royal going to save us cause he just does not run people over 10 yards downfiled on pass plays ...
how much better will we be with a TE that can actually practice every day .. and how much better will the locker room be with one less jack ass to listen to and wonder about ...
and w/o the contract being re-negotiated .. what was his mind set going to be??? .. hold out .... disgruntled?? .. where would his head have been at .. and NO WAY should we have re-done his contract ... TB will regret this sooner that later ...
its not just about blocking vs recieving ... are we a better team w/o KW?? ... I don't know at this point .. if we get someone in rnd 2 that steps right in and contributes .. I believe we will be a MUCH BETTER football team w/o him ..
and even w/o someone that contributes right away with that 2nd rnd pick .. although we may lose a little sumptin on Sundays .. i think we'll still be better when U consider EVERYTHING .... but I can see the other side of that one also ...
and with BQ oulling the trigger .. we will get much more out of our passing game .. that goes w/o saying ... its almost BQ TIME ...

Just some general statements.
Otto for a guy who knows zip about football you sure argue a lot about your favorite subject....NOTHING
Attack: If there is certainty about targeting somebody in the draft to make a significant IMPACT at the Free Safety position. For me there are only two answers.
And in order: 1. Jenkins at #5 or a short Drop back scenario. There is no other that could offer that Special Impact of a Ball Hawk that we would look in a FS than Jenkins. I'm not so sure I agree with that decision but he would make a Stud FS.
2. Moore. He was considered a stud a year ago. Now he's dropped due to playing with injuries. We do have his Safety Coach and Defensive Coordinator on our staff. The chance that he's there at 36 is Very, very good - we would have an inside track on him if we feel he will be special.
I cannot see us "COUNTING" on any other to be there specifically to actually plan it as a strategy on the level of a draft pick that we are Counting on being there.
Pdawg...I know I have been very consistent with my praises of Savage. I am no hypocrite. I do recognize that he was 50% + of a problem we had in a Marriage between GM n Coach. But I take heat for stating my opinion that I will always be Beholding to Savage for being the guy to finally lay down a Foundation of talent for us to get out of Expansion!!!
JMHO
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!
