It was only the size of California. How many polar bears could live in that small of an area. Arctic Sea Ice Underestimated for Weeks Due to Faulty Sensor By Alex Morales Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- A glitch in satellite sensors caused scientists to underestimate the extent of Arctic sea ice by 500,000 square kilometers (193,000 square miles), a California- size area, the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center said. The error, due to a problem called “sensor drift,” began in early January and caused a slowly growing underestimation of sea ice extent until mid-February. That’s when “puzzled readers” alerted the NSIDC about data showing ice-covered areas as stretches of open ocean, the Boulder, Colorado-based group said on its Web site. “Sensor drift, although infrequent, does occasionally occur and it is one of the things that we account for during quality- control measures prior to archiving the data,” the center said. “Although we believe that data prior to early January are reliable, we will conduct a full quality check.’’ The extent of Arctic sea ice is seen as a key measure of how rising temperatures are affecting the Earth. The cap retreated in 2007 to its lowest extent ever and last year posted its second- lowest annual minimum at the end of the yearly melt season. The recent error doesn’t change findings that Arctic ice is retreating, the NSIDC said. The center said real-time data on sea ice is always less reliable than archived numbers because full checks haven’t yet been carried out. Historical data is checked across other sources, it said. The NSIDC uses Department of Defense satellites to obtain its Arctic sea ice data rather than more accurate National Aeronautics and Space Administration equipment. That’s because the defense satellites have a longer period of historical data, enabling scientists to draw conclusions about long-term ice melt, the center said. “There is a balance between being as accurate as possible at any given moment and being as consistent as possible through long time-periods,” NSIDC said. “Our main scientific focus is on the long-term changes in Arctic sea ice.”

It's a slow Sunday so I'll bite.......What was the point you were trying to make?
They had a sensor problem. They discovered it. They corrected it. They're checking their other sensors. Am I missing something?

Apparently you're missing the fact that the sea ice is not melting like they were just recently saying. Meaning that perhaps the worries over melting sea ice are unfounded.....I mean, most everyone has heard how fast the ice is melting and it's all because of man made carbon emissions and if we'd just give al gore more money, so he can cruise around in his jet and suv's, and tell us all how terrible we are and shouldn't fly or drive suv's......well, maybe those reports have been unfounded.

there was an aberrant sensor for 5 weeks....which is now fixed....i'm pretty sure that's not when the idea of ice melt came about

And apparently you're missing the fact that the error started in January and was caught last week. I hardly think that anyone was making policy-type decisions based on one month's data. Coupled with the fact they also use satellite data makes me think the data is pretty sound.
But don't let that stop you from taking gratuitous shots at Al Gore or anyone else that disagrees with you.

So does this mean that Global Warming isn't as big an immediate problem as recently thought? I'm somewhat confused what this means for sure

Al gore does not need gratuitous shots from me or anyone else. He sets himself up so unbelievably.
As for me taking shots with people that disagree with me? I'm not clear on what "shots" you mean, but I can't hardly believe that you want me to change my opinion based solely on someone else's opinion, do you?

it doesn't mean anything....there was 5 weeks of bad data, that was then corrected.....
it's just that one sensor in the article started showing enormous amounts of melt, amounts that couldn't have been physically possible, they realized that this was due to a malfunction of the sensor, instead of any physical process, and so they fixed the sensor
most likely that data was never used for anything, because in most cases, data doesn't go from recorded to published in 5 months, much less 5 weeks

Does that mean they disregard the temp. sensors that are placed on top of buildings? Next to a/c units?

Ah, I see. So, I base my opinions on facts that you don't like, so you feel you can call me out because I don't agree with the opinions you do......I get it. Some facts are better than others, huh?

So I guess I still can't cut out my Catalytic converters and start running leaded gasoline and R-12 refrigerant?

Dude, nobody "called you out". If I wanted to do that I'd PM you. But I do think you seem to think your opinion is the only one that matters. And it seems to me that you base your opinions on whatever right wing drivel you can find. I guess the melting sea ice is caused by those pesky liberals that are trying to take your guns away, eh?

Oh, I get it. When I state facts that disagree with man made global warming, they have no merit in your eyes. Okay.

Right wing "drivel"? What right wing drivel have I spoken of? If my having an opinion is right wing drivel in your mind, so be it. Small minds think like that I suppose.

To even insinuate something like that shows the level of intellect you have. But, I bet you think pres. Obama is serious and doing a good thing with his "fiscal responsibility summit" too.
I appreciate your attempt at juvenile humor. It just falls flat on it's face though, kinda like you.

Actually, I'm old enough to know better than to argue with you. But it's usually so much fun I can't help myself. You know what I enjoy the most? The way you take yourself so seriously. Like your opinion is the be-all, end-all. Have a wonderful evening. But do be careful about those marauding drug cartels moving through Archbold..........

CrazyOtto, What fact inconclusively support global warming? Is it truly a slam dunk? It is truly surprising to me that very little is said about the ice core data that indicate that CO2 values 115,000 years ago were as high as they are today, and the cycle repeats itself every 115k years. Tell me please what industrial outputs contributed to the CO2 levels of that era? Anthopogenic sources are nothing but noice on larger, climate driven cycle. All you Global Warming advocates should do yourself a favor, go do some research on the Milakovitch cycles. Especially take note of where we are now on these cycles....Global Warming is another means of the government and media trying to gain control of big business.

I saw today that a rocket carrying a global warming satellite crashed into the antartic ocean today. Hope it didn't knock off a big chunk of ice in the process. So we've got satellites crashing down, sensors floating loose around the ocean, scientist testing out hundreds of floating mirrors trying to reflect sunlight away from the earth ... You know in the movie Wall-E, I used to think he was cleaning up the garbage left behind by wasteful humans ... turns out he was just cleaning up the mess left behind by global warming scientists.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090223/ap_on_sc/sci_climate_update_1WASHINGTON – The Earth won't have to warm up as much as had been thought to cause serious consequences of global warming, including more extreme weather and increasing threats to plants and animals, says an international team of climate experts. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated that the risk of increased severe weather would rise with a global average temperature increase of between 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit and 3.6 degrees above 1990 levels. The National Climatic Data Center currently reports that global temperatures have risen 0.22 degree since 1990. Now, researchers report that "increases in drought, heat waves and floods are projected in many regions and would have adverse impacts, including increased water stress, wildfire frequency and flood risks starting at less than (1.8 degrees) of additional warming above 1990 levels." Indeed, "it is now more likely than not that human activity has contributed to observed increases in heat waves, intense precipitation events, and the intensity of tropical cyclones," concluded the researchers led by Joel B. Smith of Stratus Consulting Inc., in Boulder, Colo. Other researchers, they noted, have suggested that "the likelihood of the 2003 heat wave in Europe, which led to the death of tens of thousands of people, was substantially increased by increased greenhouse gas concentrations." The new report, in this week's online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, comes just a week after Christopher Field of the Carnegie Institution for Science told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science that humans are now adding carbon to the atmosphere even faster than in the 1990s. Carbon dioxide and other gases added to the air by industrial and other activities have been blamed for rising temperatures, increasing worries about possible major changes in weather and climate. Carbon emissions have been growing at 3.5 percent per year since 2000, up sharply from the 0.9 percent per year in the 1990s, Field said. The new study found evidence of greater vulnerability to climate change for specific populations, such as the poor and elderly, in not only developing but also developed countries. "For example, events such as Hurricane Katrina and the 2003 European heat wave have shown that the capacity to adapt to climate-related extreme events is lower than expected and, as a result, their consequences and associated vulnerabilities are higher than previously thought," the scientists report. Co-authors of the report include Stephen H. Schnieder of Stanford University, Michael Oppenheimer of Princeton University and researchers in India, Germany, Canada, Zimbabwe, Australia, Bangladesh, Cuba and Belgium. ----------- "The Earth won't have to warm up as much as had been thought to cause serious consequences of global warming..." Well, many of them have even said that global warming will cause global cooling, and either way, they want money.

[....Global Warming is another means of the government and media trying to gain control of big business. you mean the corporate interests dont you?what makes you think any corporation cares about you?why would you care about protecting 'big buisness' from the mean old government. the government is actualy you!and me of coarse.and I only care about human beings.so it makes good sense to regulate industry in order that is does not harm myself, you, and our children. i wonder if there was a hole in the ozone layer during this Milokovitch cycles.I doubt it.I am not a scientist, but I am aware that we humans and our industry have scared and gouged the earth quite a bit.perhaps its wise to have some respect for the only home we have ,here on earth.we dont own it,we just get to use it for a very few years.I hope you will consider this approach.

This global warming crisis is getting pushed to the back of the crisis list...with all the other crisises such as the education crisis [where 17000 bureaucrats run the Dept of Education - but teach not one student].
