I know some of you guys on here lift weights!

what do you guys eat after? do you have a post-workout meal? or snack?

some of you might not have one..but i'm trying to gain weight so i usually try to eat something healthy...
Being a vegetarian limits my options. I try to eat eggs or egg whites but i need more options!

Nuts, seeds, beans, soy products (tofu, soy milk, tempeh), grains (wheat, oats, rice), eggs, and dairy products.

I am 99% veggie myself, and I'm addicted to this brand called QUORN. They make frozen "chicken" and it's delicious. I use it for everything, from salads to burritos. You should give it a try. It's in the organic frozen foods.

I also like Egg Beaters, peanut butter and lots of dairy.

Mmmmm yes, black beans are yummy!! I have only recently gotten into tofu... I don't make it for myself yet, but maybe sometime I will try.

Look hard at yogurt. Potassium and protein! L-carnitine supplements. If you eat lean, the weight is going to be hard to mass up. Whey protein shake and fruit smoothies will handle your eggs as well. A good long source I eat sometimes is soy nuts which can be flavored as well. They take awhile to break down also. But try finishing with a slow neg set after your regular sets to get the mass up. Good luck and stay away from the Vitamin S!

Immediately after a workout you want to get some kind of liquid in your stomach that contains a 4:1 (carbs to protein) ratio. This could be in the form of a recovery drink such as 8 oz grape juice with one tablespoon of vanilla protein powder. It could also be good old chocolate milk (if that is permitted being a vegetarian).

you should eat complex carbohydrates.thats whole grain food,in the morning.this will give you a good staedy supply of energy throughout the day and your workout.hydrate yourself because if you are thirsty, that means you are in fact dehydrated.befor you begin to lift, stetch and inhale a good supply of oxegen.
protien builds and repairs tissue.that is all.you will require about 100 grams on workout days, about 60 on off days,as an athelete.
as a vegitarian you must combine two protein sorces to have a whole protein .
soy is the only complete protein outside of animal protein .of coarse, eggs are animal protein,as are all dairy products.
I recomend organic raw eggs mixed with milk and cheese.its good.
get a juicer, and charge up befor your workout .

Post workout, being a vegetarian and looking to gain weight I would suggest a whey protein shake, simple carbs, look at dextrose. I drink Gatorade, but creatine has alot of simple sugars in it also if you want to go that route.

I was gonna suggest peanut butter also with it for the added protein and good fats (natural peanut butter) but with the peanut butter scare lately, it's up to you but peanut butter I think would slow down the digestion process and what you want after workout is fast absorption.

I know you asked for post workout, abd you already may know this but before bed take some casein protein or eat cottage cheese. Gotta have that protein all night while you sleep so your muscles don't start breaking down.

ok..what you want to do is pre-workout..a complex carb and slow digesting protein..egg is a good source, as well as any casein protein such as milk. Post workout, whatever you decide to eat, do within 45 minutes. A typical protein shake that i use is a few scoops of whey, 2 tbl spoons natural PB, 2tbl flax, and stuff called waxy maize starch. The goal is to get protein and carbs in your system for repair and to replenish glycogen stores. This should be the only time you consume simple carbs. Dex/malto are options and thats basically all gatorade is, but it really spikes insulin. That's why i use a starch based simple carb. you don't get a bloat, it aborbs alot faster and don't mess with insulin levels. another thing...if at all possible, make your shake with water and not milk. it speeds up absorbtion. and if you want a recommendation on a good whey. I only use Optimum Nutrition because they have hyrdowhey which is partially digested allowing for better aborption. The problem with most whey proteins is they are blends of several type of proteins, many of which aren't readily absorbed and just passed. Thats why if money isn't an object, most people go with the isolates. Well the majority of the protein in ON blend is isolates.. and they extreme milk chocolate is killer.

What do you mean by insulin spike?? As a diabetic this kind of interesed me. Are you saying it causes the pancreas to produce more insulin in response to the sugars? I am kind of curious as to how this would effect my sugar levels as a diabetic.

Since you are a vegetarian, try protein bars and a drink called Proto-Diet. It has massive amounts of protien in it and is like a Kool Aid you mix with water. It doesn't have the suger content of other products.

I don't think dextrose is of much use to you unless you drop low. However, after a hard workout your non-insulin dependant GLUT4 will suck up a good amount of the available blood sugar so you may want a quick acting sugar to keep you from dropping too low...but you know that already. You can spike whenever you want so I don't see a special reason to take extra dextrose, although an acute dextrose dose followed with a quick acting insulin theoretically could shuttle more into your muscle. I say theoretically because, as you know things don't always work the way one would think they would in your state. usually if you are non diabetic the aim is 50-70g dex/malto post workout. So you could benefit from it. but i would monitor it until you get where you should be. Dex is usually used to load creatine. It also speeds up recovery and liver glycogen..but its basically blood sugar..so honestly if you're diabetic i'd go with something lower GI. The thing if you're diabetic and are trying to lose weight, it almost won't happen if you are using dextrose. Not sure what you try to keep you Hba1c at, but if i was to guess i would say no higher than 7. So while dex helps shuttle protein. You can do the same thing with a lower GI carb. I've done in the past was take quick oats and put them in a coffee grinder and mix that in with my shake..

This is exactly what they tell you at the sports medicine classes for coaches. They find that the best way for muscles to recover quicker (and in turn build faster) is roughly 8-12 oz. of low fat chocolate milk.

So my carne worshipper triple deluxe pizza power pre-and post- workout is not nutritionally sound? I am gonna run to the store for the choco milk then to balance it up. Just kidding. This is a good read for me.
