Mangini reaching out to disgruntled Browns DT Rogers
Posted: February 24th, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: Cleveland Browns, Eric Mangini, Shaun Rogers

As much as Eric Mangini has tried to change the culture in Cleveland, one of his biggest challenges now is changing the mind of Browns defensive tackle Shaun Rogers.

Rogers has grown so disenchanted with the situation in Cleveland that he has asked the Browns not to pick up the $6 million option-bonus payment due to him next month, a source close to the defensive tackle said. Rogers would rather be released after one season with the Browns, despite still being owed another $15 million in guaranteed money.

The Browns said Rogers hasn’t asked them to be released.

Cutting Rogers would be difficult to do financially. If the Browns release Rogers, they would have to count more than $9.7 million against their salary cap.

Cleveland has no intention of getting rid of Rogers. It wants him back as the productive team member he was last season, when he was selected to the Pro Bowl. Mangini, according to those within the Cleveland organization, is still optimistic that he can change Rogers’ mind once the two men speak. Mangini is said to have recently reached out to Rogers. Those who know Rogers say his mind will not be changed. MORE

The only way I get rid of him is if we trade him for Julius Peppers straight up. He either stays on the team or is traded for Julius Peppers...No other options in my mind

I don't want to get rid of him, but we've seen what can happen when Rogers is unhappy, as he was in Detroit. He is so important to this defense, an insurance policy may be needed.

Ugh. This is shocking to me, I had no idea there was even an issue with him. Hopefully he and Mangini meet and get it straightened out.

2008 Statistics:
Games/Starts: 16/16
Tackles: 76
Sacks: 4.5

Cutting Rogers would be difficult to do financially. If the Browns release Rogers, they would have to count more than $9.7 million against their salary cap.

Cleveland has no intention of getting rid of Rogers. It wants him back as the productive team member he was last season, when he was selected to the Pro Bowl. Browns coach Eric Mangini, according to those within the Cleveland organization, is still optimistic that he can change Rogers' mind once the two men speak. Mangini is said to have recently reached out to Rogers. Those who know Rogers say his mind will not be changed.

But Mangini has had success in these types of settings. When he arrived in New York as the Jets' coach in 2006, wide receiver Laveranues Coles was, at best, a skeptic, but Mangini eventually won him over.

Mangini has said publicly that when change occurs, as it did in Cleveland, there is uncertainty and that can create misunderstandings like the one that has happened now.

Some of Rogers' feelings stem back to two offseason incidents in which he believes Mangini disrespected him. The first time, Mangini walked into the Browns' training room and failed to say hello to Rogers. The next time, at a public charity function in which both men were in the green room, neither said hello to the other, and Mangini later said he didn't know Rogers was there.

"Anytime someone new comes in, there's a process of getting to know that person," Mangini said Feb. 4. "I feel really comfortable with who I am and the things I do. I know that everything is done for a very specific reason and that is to give us the best chance to win. I feel really good about the relationships that I had in New York with the players there. I think that the things that they have said are things I feel really good about. I anticipate having those same types of relationships here."

The Browns believe that, once Rogers hears out Mangini, the same will occur. The situation will be soothed over, hard feelings will dissipate and Cleveland will have a happy defensive tackle.

"I didn't realize Shaun was there at the time," Mangini said earlier this offseason of the green-room incident. "I know it's probably hard to believe considering how big he is and how big I am. I feel really good about watching him on tape. I always appreciate 360-pound nose guards. He's powerful, disruptive, has a high motor, and I’m looking forward to that."

Some believe there are other reasons driving Rogers' desire to leave the Browns. But before the situation is resolved, Mangini will have his say with the player whose mind he now must change

Well, if in fact there is any truth to this at all...our "D" will suffer....BAD....on the other hand, I suppose if you were to trade him away, just think of what you could get for him...do I think for a second that there is anyone in the draft that could fill his shoes...no, maybe not even 2 players.....but, I would think you coould get a high 1st round out of somebody.....and also a 2nd...maybe even something else...or like somebody said earlier...sombody like a Peppers...I wouldn't want Peppers, mainly cause I don't think he is as good as Rogers, plus he is 29 I think......there are a few unhappy players around the league looking for a new home....and if Rogers is one of them....then I say let's go shopping.......

you know what lets trade his butt then...if he dont want to be here then i say dont let the door hit you in the @$! on the way out

He might have been our best player but he signed a huge deal and if he wants to be a jerk, i say trade him and get picks for him. he wont play if he is here against his will....he will just go thru the motions and cost us game after game!

I love rodgers as a player but its his off field issues that have resurfaced again that have me worried...if this story turns out to be true then he will be a huge distraction on a already poor "D"....he WILL NOT PLAY if he dosnt want to be here, he showed that in detroit....if its true i say lets get some picks or another player or two for him!

This is makes no sense why would Mangini go out of his way to diss Rodgers. He by far the best defensive player, and maybe the best player the browns have. Also the key to a 3-4 is the nose tackle...no why would you want to make a pro-bowl nose tackle mad?

I believe Mangini when he says he just didn't know that Rodgers was in the room. Hopefully Cooler heads will prevail.

Yeah, there better be more to it than missing him at an awards show. I can't blame Mangini if that is why Rogers is pissed, I know sometimes I walk with blinders on if I'm day dreaming or tired or thinking. It happens sometimes.

Whoever mentioned Rogers looking at Haynesworth getting a monster pay day may be on to something. Just seems like weird timing for the story to come out.

Um...wow.

If he is really pissed because the head coach, who is extremely busy, didn't say hi to him, then he has ego problems.

On the other hand, there is no way I let him go for free. It would have to take an offer of a lifetime to get him off our hands, IMO.

yeah, me too.......but, let's look at this as if it was true...and we have to trade him.....I say the best place to start, would be the teams that are after Haynesworth...and the ones that I saw so far that are wanting him are Philly and Seattle....and I saw a lil tid bit that Atlanta might be interested.....let's start with Philly....

Philly said that they are really interested in Haynesworth....and it just so happens that they have Lito Sheppard that is also a lil unhappy about being a nickel back, plus they have 2 1st round picks....there is alot of bargaining room there.....

Seattle....well, they really don't have any players I don't think we coould use and/or get, so it would probably have to be done with all draft picks....and they have a good one.....they do need a QB...or at least will need one soon....not sure if you could pull have a package deal with DA and Rogers....that would take every draft pick they have...lol...

Atlanta......I just really can't see us doing anything at all with them...

but if we could move Rogers to say Philly for maybe Lito and a 1st round....and find a way to trade DA and maybe Stallworth to Detroit for a 2nd....or a 3rd and 4th .....and hell, while I'm at it, let's go and sign Haynesworth to replace him........ .........I think with all of those picks, we could bring ini some quality players....obviously the Haynesworth thing was me being stupid, but I think we could do something...I think Tank Johnson is out there....he is no Rogers, and I know he comes with some baggage, but he would be ok I think for a year or so....

Perhaps both of them do.

But, if you take your coach not saying hi to you as a sign that you don't want to be there then, yes, he may have ego problems.

I still would not let Rogers go, at least not for anything less than a first rounder.

While you may be afforded the luxury of walking thru life in a daze most men are not.
I was lambasted here for pointing out that Mangini was wrong in ignoring Rogers, and then questioning his rather lame explanation of the events.
It appears I'm not the only one that thinks HC's shouldn't be so aloof.

The Bucs were after Haynesworth and are rumored to be interested in DA... what would they give us for both DA and Rogers? Lol.

Man, I hope this report is overblown and Rogers sits down with Mangini and everything is worked out.

Yeah, I just read the article on nfl.com....TB and Detroit are both in that situation....if this is true, I still think we can come out of this smelling decent...I mean, no matter what, we now have a hole the size of the moon to fill with Rogers being gone, but if there is a bright side to it, then this is it.....

NO NO NO!

If we lose Rodgers over the stupid fact that Mangini snubbed him... the fans will be calling for Mangini's head. There's always something with the Browns.

If this is true and we lose him over this BS then you can bet BE, KW2 and any other franchise level player will soon follow. Mangini is now is in a catch 22.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

And all of you should get off Rodgers back. He played his heart out last season. If I were in his shoes I'd be PO'd too.

It was one time. Not everyone is perfect. Mangini may have just missed him. It is possible. If Rogers said "hi" or made and effort to talk to Mangini and was blown off that is a different story, but if Mangini just simply missed him, Rogers needs to stop being such a "Big Baby."
