Ya know, we still lead the world in manufacturing, and I heard this weekend that we still manufacture around the same number of things as we did decades ago. It's just that we manufacture different things.

My guess is that the workforce refused to adapt to the "different" things.

Anybody got any information as far as that goes?

Just clicking

Well, I guess I got a whole lotta answers as to what you all thought!

One theme I keep hearing is "who or what is to blame' and "what we are doing isn't the right way to fix it". I hear very little constructive thoughts about how to go about turning things around.

Jindal (sorry I screwed up his name earlier) Doesn't have a very good delivery,, but who cares. Listen to his words and in them you will hear that the Republicans seem to want the same things President Obama wants.

They want to do some of the very same things that Obama wants to accomplish.

The difference isn't in the desire, it's in the path to get there.

Certainly, if both sides want the same things or close to the same things, there has got to be a way that reasonable people can come together in agreement. I'm pretty sure that Democrates don't have all the answers and I'm equally sure that Republicans don't either.

Yet to hear some of you, you would think that one side or the other is always right.

I"ve said it before and I'll say it again, if these two parties can't get thier acts on the same page, it won't matter.

Time for division is over with.

But hey, that's JMO

It's possibly the most important thing when it comes to supporting our future as Americans.

I want to support MY kids through college, not everyone else's. Sorry, I don't buy in to socialistic views.

Read many of my posts, and you'll see i dont either. However, you wont be supporting others kids through college, and that's an important differentiation to make. It's not like welfare or social security in that you'll probably never see the money returned. You'll have a chance to claim the same amount as everyone else and recoup the money you put in. Education is far too important to leave it to a select few that can afford it, and even less will be able to attend a secondary education college because the cost keeps rising. A 10,000 dollar tax credit over four years is a good way to start regaining our place in the world, on the shoulders of our children. This is a VERY small way in which the government can help keep the country strong, and therefore keep it's citizens safe. This is about investing in infrastructure that will pay dividends in the future.

So just like before with Obama's plan the rich can go to college, the poor can go to college, and the middle class can bend over and take it up the rear.

If your rich you can afford to pay for college. If your poor you can get grants, and fin. aid for college, if your middle class you get very little help, yet you still don't have 100,000 laying around to pay for your kids education.

In his speech he said everybody should have the right to attend college. However forking out 2,500 to help the middle class afford it still leaves the middle class at a disadvantage when compared to the rich, and the lower class. Lets not forget parents already had the Hope learning credit, AND the lifetime learning credits available.

thats the truth of it right there..

and even with that 2500/year many won't be able to go to college....last i heard its about 15,000/ year in ohio for a state school like kent...

i'm hopin' i can send my kids to tri-c for 2 years...

my oldest daughter said she wanted to go to either harvard, princeton, or yale, when she was in like 9th grade....i about died...then told her the truth of it...

fact is i could take all the equity out of my house, and maybe get one kid to school for 2 years (might not even be any equity now...lol) and then what do i tell the other 3...too bad?

maybe if we stopped bringing in all these foreigners enrollment would drop, and then tuition prices would follow...

but hey, i dropped out of college before i lost all my common sense

There is all kinds of financial aid out there. My daughter got some grants and the rest of it she took out a student loan.

It'll be alright.

No kidding ... I don't know where everyone get this "people can't afford college" stuff. I basically put myself through college, and graduated with a fairly low amount owed on loans ... compared to most people. I got minimal financial aid from a Pell Grant, and my parents didn't have the money to assist with anything outside of an occasional care package. What did I do? I worked two part-time jobs and lived a minimalistic lifestyle. Basically I put in the hard work and did it myself, because a degree was something I wanted.

And the funny thing is, I probably could of even avoided the student loans had I gone to a JC for a few years (granted one didn't exist in Idaho at the time) ... and lived with my parents to save on housing costs. A lot of the kids I knew in college that got the "free rides" from parents usually spent most of their time partying and took 6-years to graduate.

I put myself through college as well. Couldn't get loans, initially, because my parents made too much money (when combined). Then they split up and my sister was in college at the same time. So, sis and I both said my Dad was our sole support (at the time, he made less, since he was out of work for about 6 weeks in there too). I was able to get student loans, worked full time (or damn near it), and went to school full time. I lived fairly minimalistically and I managed to scrape by. I'm still paying on my loans (personal financial reasons) but, growing up, my parents taught me that a student loan was one debt I should be willing to take on if college was important to me. College was/is important to me, so I took on the debt.

Could I have gone to school without getting a loan, ABSOLUTELY! It just would have taken me MUCH longer to finish school.

Both of my nephews are in that boat right now. Both going to school, one in Pittsburgh and one in Tampa.

Both have taken small loans to take on the first part of school and then took jobs to earn the rest. if it works out like they plan, they will both graduate with minimal loan amounts outstanding.. maybe 20k or so each.

that's not terrible. When I went to school, I took out loans to pay for it, worked full time and went to school full time.. Wanna talk about tired I found it hard to stay awake and my grades began to suffer.

Mom and Dad came to the rescue in my final year helped out so I could cut my work hours down to part time. What a HUGE difference that turned out to be. upon grad, I had only about 10k in loans to pay off... took me 5 years but they were gone.

I don't know, it might have been nice to have someone pay my way, but I think it helped me learn the value of a buck better than anything anyone could have told me.

You sound a lot like my dad. He has always wanted to hand us kids money at any opportunity he could get. Personally, it doesn't feel right to me taking hand-outs from him. Case in point, he has offered to help me out financially since my layoff, but I declined even though I'm hurting financially. I would have to be on the verge of becoming homeless before I would take money from him. I want him and my mom to enjoy their retirement...not give their money to their kids.

You seem to have an old fashioned view in this regard. And don't talk that as an insult, please. You seem like a very sweet, considerate father, and I'm sure she appreciates it.

I want to pay for my kids education. I don't want them to have to start out with so much debt. Unfortunately as of now it will be impossible.

I understand where you are coming from, especially after reading some of what this board's college kids believe. If I think my kids don't appreciate what advantages they have and don't take their education seriously I would not pay for it. They will learn it the hard way.

For some people helping out their kids makes them happy. My inlaws give all of us kids $500 each at Christmas (plus presents) even though they are retired. They are not wealthy (my father-in-law always worked multiple jobs) but they want to see us enjoy the fruits of their labor. They feel we will get their money anyway, so why not be hear to see us use it?
