like the Giants deal, because it fills one of our 2 big needs in getting another OLB. Of course we will need a WR at that point, but I'll always take a trench guy over a perimeter player anyway. If this deal went down (and I would ask for their 2nd, because it's a lower pick) we would have 5 picks in the 1st 4 rounds........those are the money rounds where your supposed to be getting guys that are legitimate contributors to your team. Somebody mentioned we sucked picking in the 3rd round..lol...well they have, and that is a big reason we have sucked on the field.

I'd do the Giants deal right now if it were me...
And I'd go get a WR in the draft..and the reason they suck drafting in the 3rd/4th rounds is because they don't look in here to see some of the mocks..

Greer would be an ok Nickel-CB with spot starting ability....kinda like Holly before the injury, who I hope we will give another chance here...we still need depth: as of now we only have McD and Wright..and Lawson who isn´t a NFL CB

Greer will demand Goodman money, he wasn´t as good last year but he´s younger...I hope you guys realize that...CBs price tag is crazy, he won´t come cheap...everything under 5/year will be a good deal....just preparing you

on RBs: yeah, I´m a little disappointed too we didn´t go harder after Ward....now I´d think about signing M.Morris...this guy is so underrated, perfect 3rd down back. Or maybe the rumors about us loving R.Jennings are right and that´s what the #50 overall will be used for...which would look like an overdraft as of now....

I'm hoping we didn't go after Ward because we're going to be landing McCoy with our first 2nd round pick.

Just a quick note on Bens 46 sacks

21 of them came in 4 games against the NFC East

15 in another 4 games against Balt(2) and Tenn and SD

36 sacks came in half the games....which means in the other 8 games...Ben was sacked 10 times. (78% of his sacks came in 8 games - 22 % in the other 8)

Eagles, Ravens, Titans, Giants, Cowboys...they sacked everyone they played against...and were 29 of the Steelers 46 sacks.

So yes...Steelers line had issues...but Im not sure it was a "talent" issue week in and week out as much as mental and matchups.

HACK

Browns played the same schedule as the Steelers (except for two teams, obviously, but I think you can factor those out when you consider Cleveland played the #1 D in the league twice, and Pittsburgh obviously didn't). Our four quarterbacks were sacked a total of 24 times.

But since my point was that when Ben wasn't getting sacked he was making passes to put the Steelers in position to win, and was greatly helped by his league-leading defense in that he didn't have to put up 21+ ppg to win, you don't really need to come rushing to the defense of Benny boy. I was paying him, and the team, a compliment, and using them as an example of why trading away our #1 WR and then drafting one high when drafting defensive players is much more needed is silly.

Browns have more cash to spend

Tuesday, March 3, 2009 1:09 AM EST

By Jeff Schudel
JSchudel@News-Herald.com

The Browns have more money for free agency than when the market opened Friday, but so far they have been reluctant to spend it.

Offensive lineman Ryan Tucker, due to make $3.25 million in 2009 before free agency began, agreed to contract restructuring that will reduce his salary to $850,000. Kellen Winslow Jr.'s salary of $4.5 million is also off the Browns' payroll.

With the adjustments and adding back in amortized bonuses for both players, the Browns are at least $20 million under the salary cap. They were about $14.5 million under the cap before Friday.

Sources in Buffalo told The News-Herald that Bills free agent cornerback Jabari Greer will visit the Browns. Greer, 27, is ranked eighth among free agent cornerbacks by Mel Kiper. Scout.com is more generous and ranks Greer third behind Nnamdi Asomugha, who re-signed with Oakland, and Dunta Robinson, who was franchised by the Texans.

Greer, 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, played and started in the first 10 games for Buffalo in 2008. He suffered a knee injury in the game against the Browns on Nov. 17 and did not play again. Surgery was not required. Greer intercepted two passes and returned both for touchdowns — one 42 yards and one 33 yards.

Greer played in all 16 and started 13 games in 2007. He was slated to lose his job to Leodis McKelvin, the Bills' first-round pick in 2008. Greer, known for a willingness to wrap up a ballcarrier, would challenge Brandon McDonald or Eric Wright for a starting job. Greer was credited with 38 tackles last season and 46 in 2007.

Greer would be the second high-level cornerback eyed by the Browns. The first, Andre Goodman, was tentatively scheduled to visit Berea, but he stopped in Denver first and signed a five-year, $25 million contract with $10 million guaranteed. The Browns are not the only team interested in Greer, either. Greer visited the Lions on Saturday but left without a contract.

Two safeties remain on the Browns radar — Jim Leonhard from the Ravens and James Butler from the Giants.

Brian Mackler, the agent for Browns free agent safety Sean Jones, did not return phone messages left with him Monday.

Greer would be a good pickup at a reasonable price. Sitting out the first round of FA is going to make anybody we MIGHT pick up fairly cheap.

I'll be a bit surprised if NOBODY ever inquires about Jones. Philly is now hurting at the safety position. Oh well, I actually would rather have Jones back and see what he can do this season.

Wow Diam I can't remember us being on the same page almost WORD FOR WORD on a post as in the one you made to Coach B on page 5 of this thread.

Just one comment...half sarcastic...half real.

"A. he is way more accurate than DA ... so he will have more catchable balls thrown his way ... he will be hit in stride more often giving him a chance to make plays after the catch ."

That could actually be a NO NO in BE's case...lol

Although I think the Dig routes would not have balls zipped to BE's shins those got to be better for BE

But wow I can't believe the mirror of my sentiments on that post...especially your Feel Good part about we are playing to WIN in 09 not to rebuild you sure your brother didn't take over your PC for a day??? Even though he's a fan of another???

On to pages 6 n 7

"36 sacks came in half the games....which means in the other 8 games...Ben was sacked 10 times. (78% of his sacks came in 8 games - 22 % in the other 8)"

With our history - you are going to tell us the dynamics of the SACK?!?

lol

Here is how it goes with Mediocre OLs cause for gosh sakes we had our share.

Lousy OLs are consistently lousy.

But mediocre OLs give out the demographics that you have just shown.
Against LOUSY pass Rush Teams they will pass block OK...btw 10 times against 8 LOUSY pass rushing teams is nothing to brag about

But against 8 teams with good defensive LOS there was 36 sacks....perfect sign of a mediocre OL.

Now another variable cannot be over looked. Ben Roth being one of the most amazing escape/powerful artist to get rid of a ball even on the way down! He saved a net balance of at least 10 Sacks saved...yes, I included the times he ran out of the pocket unescessarily and got a sack. But for the most time it was legitimate everyone covered and pocket was breaking down.

"but Im not sure it was a "talent" issue week in and week out as much as mental and matchups."

Dream on...all I know is this is going to take its toll on Big Ben...its a shame but if you guys don't work it out the blame can only come in one direction. I was shocked as in the history of the SB I can't remember a worse OL winning the Championship. Big Ben was amazing and the Cards weren't exactly one of the most dangerous although peaking.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I haven't seen or heard anything about this Giants trade...other than on this board. And people are talking about it like it is almost a done deal. Strange.

I just found this on Cleveland.com:

Quote:

CLEVELAND -- The upside of a management team cloaked in secrecy is it begets rumors. And they are certainly flying around the Browns.

One rumor has the Browns trading Brady Quinn and Shaun Rogers to Denver for Jay Cutler and a third-round draft choice.

Another has the Browns dealing Braylon Edwards to the New York Giants for pass rusher Mathias Kiwanuka.

Let's analyze each rumor.

Denver is in a quandary after word leaked out that new coach Josh McDaniels tried to acquire Matt Cassell in a three-way deal with New England and Tampa Bay. (Cutler would have wound up with the Buccaneers.) Now that the toothpaste is out of the tube, the Broncos may figure they have to part ways with Cutler.

McDaniels was schooled on offense in New England by Charlie Weis, who then coached Quinn at Notre Dame. So Quinn should appeal to him. McDaniels also needs a stout nose tackle to anchor new coordinator Mike Nolan's 3-4 defense. That's where the newly disgruntled Rogers comes in.

The problem with this rumor is the Browns get shortchanged. Cutler is kind of an upgraded version of Derek Anderson -- rocket arm, inconsistent, not a great field general. Also, dealing Rogers would leave a huge void in the middle of Eric Mangini's defense -- one that 2008 draft pick Ahtyba Rubin could not come close to filling. Rogers' inclusion in this trade should command Denver's No. 1 in return.

Trading Rogers would be tantamount to greasing the squeaky wheel, of course, and might create a line of players looking for greener pastures outside GM George Kokinis' door. In front would be Edwards, which leads us to the second rumor.

The Giants need to replace problem player Plaxico Burress with another big, physical receiver. They also have an embarrassing surplus of pass rushers after signing free agents Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty. Kiwanuka is a 6-5, 265-pound end who would line up at outside linebacker on the side opposite Kamerion Wimbley.

The problem with this trade is it leaves the Browns with virtually no playmakers on offense, Kellen Winslow already having been traded.

The net result would be replacing Quinn, Rogers and Edwards with Cutler, Kiwanuka and a high Denver draft choice.

There would be salary cap ramifications for all parties involved. But we'll let the capologists figure them out. Never let the salary cap get in the way of a juicy trade rumor.

Alas, I've checked into these and a source who would know said there are no legs to either rumor.

I wonder who his source is...himself? Nothing has been leaked from the Browns this whole off-season. Schefter said he didn't hear one word about Winslow being traded until it happened. Yet Grossi has sources. Please.

I agree the line is not tops in the NFL...its also just not as bad as most think...hence the new ring.

Got to remember...that line had

Max Starks 4 sacks (back up to start the year) Kemoeatu 7.5 sacks (first time starter replacing Faneca) Justin Hartwig 6.5 sacks (1st year FA) Darnell Stapleton 5 sacks (UDFA backup) Willie Colon 5.75 sacks(better suited to G)

4 new guys were on that line last year..some with experience some without.....You said it yourself...Ben holds the ball...sometimes a play is made...sometimes it is not...but only 29 of those 46 sacks were put on the head of the Oline....the other 17 were on RBs/TE's/Wr's and Ben.

Ive learned to live with the extra sack or two a game that Ben takes......at least 4 or 5 times this year I was screaming at the TV....THROW THE BALL AWAY!!! only to see Ben break a tackle side step a guy...and throw a first down...or a TD....

If Ben would throw it away like most QB's do...those numbers would be a lot different....thats not to say its not going to get him killed...but its just something as a fan...I have learned to live with.

As much as I dislike the Steelers as a divisional rival...I can respect good play and I am wowed by Big Ben from day one. I would love to beat you guys on a regular basis but I don't wish to do so seeing a Great Career cut short.

After last season...you just cut off 2 years of his football life. Its like smoking cigarettes...he's young and feels like Superman...but the hits he's taking will take its toll on him. Two more seasons like the one he just had...he could be done I want to beat you guys with no excuses

EO...Sanders has re-signed with the Pats 2 days ago

per roto:

Patriots agreed to terms with FS James Sanders on a three-year, $9 million contract.
Sanders, 25, took over as a starter in 2007 and has been mostly reliable, if unspectacular. He wasn't known to have generated much interest elsewhere. Sanders finished last season with 64 tackles and one interception.

Maybe we are seeing what he gets offered and we will match it? Seems risky but it might be what's happening. We don't seem to be very worried about replacing him.

Grove, Dolphins agree to 5-year deal
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Adding bulk and perhaps competition to their offensive line, the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday signed unrestricted free agent center Jake Grove, who had played all of his previous five seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

Grove will get a five-year contract worth $30 million, sources said.

The rugged Grove is expected to at least battle incumbent center Samson Satele for the starting job with the Dolphins, if not replace him in the lineup. Since being drafted in the second round in 2007, Satele has started 32 straight games, but Miami coaches are attempting to upgrade at the position.

Satele struggled in 2008 against the nose tackles in the AFC East.

A second-round choice in the 2004 draft, Grove has started at both center and guard for the Raiders. He has not been as dominating a blocker as he was in college, and the Raiders did not try hard to keep him.

Grove, 28, has played in 54 games and made 46 starts. But he has played only one full season in the NFL, that coming in 2006, when he started all 16 games. Several injuries have slowed the career of the former Virginia Tech standout.

The five-year veteran has had double-digit starts in only two seasons. He played in 12 games last season, all as a starter.

Florence deal means Bills likely done with Greer

March 3, 2009 7:18 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Tim Graham

The Buffalo Bills probably have run out of time waiting for Jabari Greer.

The Bills have signed cornerback Drayton Florence to a two-year, $6.6 million contract that can be worth $7.3 million with incentives.

That's bad news for Greer, who had an offer on the table from the Bills, but has been taking a tour of other interested clubs.

So what's our plan C???

Looking more n more like Jones and/or Adams

But at bargain prices. 9 mil for 3 years for a spot starter??? I feel like I'm in baseball land signing a .220 hitting SS

So the guys who are decent just aren't being offered the silly money. Good Hopefully we can re-sign Jones or better ourselves around that 3 years 9 mil mark...Uggh that seems high

It probably would have killed us against the cap but I would have dumped Stallworthless and signed Coles in a heartbeat, otherwise.

Cleveland Browns entertain Minnesota Viking LB Heath Farwell
by Mary Kay Cabot / Plain Dealer Reporter
Wednesday March 04, 2009, 3:45 PM
BEREA -- Minnesota Vikings free agent linebacker Heath Farwell visited the Browns today and contract talks could heat up later today, a source said.

Farwell, who led the Vikings in special teams tackles in 2006 and 2007, also visited the New England Patriots on Tuesday. A source from REP 1 Sports, Farwell's representatives, said, "It was a good visit to Cleveland. He enjoyed himself.''

Farwell, 27, is coming off surgery to repair a torn ACL suffered in the 2008 opener. He was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. Before that he was the Vikings premier kick coverage man and earned the team's special teams MVP honors following the 2006 season. Now, however, he'd like a chance to compete for a starting linebacker job.

Farwell (6-0, 235) was originally signed by the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of San Diego State in 2005.

The Browns have also expressed interest in Detroit free agent linebacker Paris Lenon, but no visit has been scheduled yet.

"The Browns are definitely on his radar scope,'' said agent Jonathan Persch. Lenon (6-2, 235) played middle linebacker for the Lions last season and would most likely play inside, next to D'Qwell Jackson in Cleveland. Originally signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Richmond in 2002, Lenon played his first four seasons in Green Bay and his last three in Detroit, where he led the Lions in tackles in 2008.

Persch said he's in the process of lining of visits with a couple of teams, and the Browns could be one of them.

Completely agree. The best you can expect is around ~70 receptions and ~6TDs. Not horrible, but not worth WR1 $$$.

Don't take this the wrong way, but why does everyone say stuff like this? The amount of a contract that is published out in the mainstream media is hardly ever the amount the guy actually ends up getting paid. It's restructured in 2 years, the guy retires, most of it's paid in bonuses not salary, could be anything but the amount normally isn't really THE amount.

Plus, it's not coming out of our pockets so unless it's gonna screw up the cap numbers so badly we can't do anything else that we want why do we care what they're paying a guy? I mean, assuming it's a guy we can use.

I thought Coles would have been a good signing. The FO disagrees but I doubt it was because of the money. At least not entirely.

Just checked into James Butler, and he looks like a legitimate player.

6-3, 215 and statistically has gotten better every year since he's been in the league. I'd prefer Jones back for a number of reasons, but this guy bears some consideration.

Also, if you check out his player profile on NFL.com you'll see him return a fumble ninety-some-odd yards against, you guessed it, us.

Ravens sign Matt Birk:

Quote:

After 11 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, and six Pro Bowl appearances, free agent center Matt Birk is leaving the team.

Birk agreed to a contract with the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday afternoon. He will replace center Jason Brown, who this week signed a five-year $37.5 million contract with the St. Louis Rams. Birk will provide stability to the Baltimore blocking unit.

The four-year contract is worth $12 million, sources told ESPN.com. Six million dollars of the total is guaranteed money, and Birk will receive $9 million in the first two years of the deal. The contract is believed to be similar to the one offered by the Vikings.

Birk and his wife, Adrianna, visited with Ravens officials on Tuesday evening. Birk then spent most of Wednesday deliberating over the two contract offers. Landing Birk, who many figured would play his entire career in Minnesota, is a nice recovery for Ravens officials, who only began recruiting him a few days ago, after Brown's departure.

The Ravens might have had a difficult time replacing Brown, whose size was effective against the 3-4 nose tackles in the AFC, but Birk is an excellent fit for a Baltimore team that advanced to the AFC Championship Game last season.

Birk, 32, has played in 146 games, with 123 starts. He missed some time in 2004 with a sports hernia and set out the entire 2005 season because of hip surgery. But Birk has started all 16 games in each of the past three seasons.

A former Harvard star, considered a stalwart on the Minnesota line, Birk has started all 16 games seven times in his career. In his first two seasons, Birk played in only 22 games, with no starts. He became a full-time starter, however, in his third season.

A sixth-round choice of Minnesota in the 1998 draft, Birk will arguably be considered among the greatest players in Vikings franchise history. He has been very involved in the community, with several charitable endeavors, and will be missed in that regard as well.
