Per John Taylor from the OBR:

The Cleveland Browns announced today that the team has traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for undisclosed draft picks.

“The Cleveland Browns thank Kellen for his contributions to this organization over the past five years,” said Browns General Manager George Kokinis. “We appreciate his passion for the game and wish him success in Tampa Bay. The draft picks we have obtained through this deal will give us greater flexibility as we look to infuse more talent and create competition and depth on this football team.”

The Browns selected Winslow with the sixth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. In his five years in Cleveland, he played in 44 games, recording 219 receptions for 2,459 yards and 11 touchdowns. In 2006, he caught 89 passes for 875 yards and 3 touchdowns, and in 2007 he went to the Pro Bowl after catching 82 passes for 1,106 yards and 5 touchdowns. He played in 10 games in 2008, catching 43 passes for 428 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Just confirmed on ESPN.

If the picks are even reasonable - based on the depth of this draft and the problems with Winslow - this is an awesome move, IMO.

Here we go again....blowing it up. We can look forward to non-rising ticket prices again for the next 2-3 years.

I assume it's going to be a 4th or 5th....if we're very lucky a third

Adam Shefter just said on NFL network that it is suspected to be a 2nd and 5th. I can't find any info on it yet other than that.

Kokinis' statement did say "draft picks" so it sounds like more than 1. I hope, at least.

Winslow played with a ton of heart and passion. I think if he had never gotten injured, he would have been here for a while. I really do wish him all the best.

I'm glad he went somewhere where we won't play him very often.

If it is indeed a 2nd and 5th, I like it. Jared Cook's a lot like Winslow. He could be a guy we'll look at in the draft.

That's amazing if true, a 2nd Round pick in this deep draft is great.

So since we traded Winslow does this mean that Edwards and Rogers are tradeable?

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now all we have to do is PRAY he somehow passes his physical ... Please Please Please ...

our only hope is they just want him so bad there going to give him a cursory physical ... like just touch his knee and say .... ya, thats good ..

and I could really care less what we got for him .. he showed up on Sundays and made plays .... but he was a MENTAL MIDGET that could not even line up correctly ... he could not pracice .. EVER ... and he was a class A .... JACK ASS!!!!!! ... and my guess is that he was alot like A-Rod in the yankees locker room ... no one really liked him ...

as good as he was on Sundays .. he was NOT WORTH it when U consider the total package ...

If or when he passes his physical .. I will be one very very happy Dawg .. regardless of what we get ... witch IMO will not be much at all .. maybe a 3rd ... if were lucky ...

It was said by a few GM's that everyone in the league was well aware that Butch Davis had one name on his draft board - KW2 - and that they were all clamoring for who could rip him off harder. I wanted Big Ben that year.

He wasn't my favorite, but he was a competitor. I am very glad we shipped him off. We're in need of picks, and I didn't feel like giving him a golden parachute contract.

I guess. We traded the only guy that played with any freakin' heart last year. I am not happy with this move. At all.

Great move by the Browns. Winslow's injuries have shortened his career. He only has a few years left. He was also a HUGE problem in the locker room. He was constantly touting himself for to be in the Pro Bowl in the locker room and meetings and the other players would tell him to learn to block. He was always demanding the ball in the huddle. The fiasco with his staph infection showed his true colors and was the final straw. He had a ton of heart, but was a me first player. Thanks for the picks, KW2.

Agreed if we got a 2nd and 5th for Kellen I'd be happy.

yes he played hard & with heart but unfortuatly his knee is the main issue along with his impending contract demands.

I thank Kellen for his effort & time and wish him the best in Tampa.

In a heart beat.

If it was just about talent/heart he'd be an all-pro.

Unfortunately, brains and character also come into play and he's on empty for both of those - not to even mention durability concerns going forward. How many years does he even have left?

Cleveland Browns trade Kellen Winslow to Tampa Bay
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Friday February 27, 2009, 12:26 PM

The Browns have traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for undisclosed draft picks.

Winslow made the Pro Bowl in 2007, but ran afoul of the organization in 2008 and was considered likely to be traded by the previous regime. The new management team of General Manager George Kokinis and coach Eric Mangini obviously agreed it was time for the 2004 No. 1 draft pick to move on.

In a prepared statement, Kokinis said, "The Cleveland Browns thank Kellen for his contributions to this organization over the past five years. We appreciate his passion for the game and wish him success in Tampa Bay. The draft picks we have obtained through this deal will give us greater flexibility as we look to infuse more talent and create competition and depth on this football team."

Before the trade, the Browns were without picks in the third, fifth and seventh rounds.

The Cleveland Browns announced on Friday afternoon that the team has traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for undisclosed draft picks.

"The Cleveland Browns thank Kellen for his contributions to this organization over the past five years," said Browns General Manager George Kokinis. "We appreciate his passion for the game and wish him success in Tampa Bay. The draft picks we have obtained through this deal will give us greater flexibility as we look to infuse more talent and create competition and depth on this football team."

Given KWII's additude, the trade makes some sense. It depends on the picks we got for him. The sound you hear is the blasting caps as the team blows it up and starts all over... UUUGGGHHH..

Im shocked....Mangini is tearing this thing to the foundation before he starts building it back up with his own people.....

I figured Winslow would be a MAJOR COG in the ball control offense Mangini likes to run.....He grabbed Dustin Keller in last years draft at pick 30.

Im not surprised by it...just more shocked by it.

YES.....I do think Mangini's mind thought is he came here to a team that had a few players who thought they were untouchable silver spoon players, last FO put a couple of these layers on pedistals and they believed they were untouchable, Mangini is not going that route and is not treating anybody special, treating everybody equal. Just my ,02 worth.

glad to see we're getting something for him. the guy always played hard but there was no doubt that the knees were going to continue to be a problem. further, we don't need to worry about re-signing him, AND i hope this helps edwards. now we tell him to focus and that he's the target for our air attack. i expect a big year from edwards.

i also have to wonder if this says anything about the offense and the DA/quinn thing. it probably doesn't but i have to speculate since it was a given that winslow benefited the most from quinn whereas edwards benefited the most from DA.

Does this mean they think Martin Rucker can fill his shoes? Because as much as I like Steve Heiden, he's a workhorse but not a huge difference maker...a great #2 option at TE but I wouldn't want to enter the season with him being the guy.

We have to remember that Heiden is a more then legit starter not to mention a better blocker. I have a feeling it was a situation where we had to much depth at one position considering our lack of depth at other positions.

I will say that I'm not sure you really need a spectacular WR-ish TE like Winslow. The guy had some great receiving skills, but we all know his lack of blocking skills let alone his trouble lining up, etc.

I'd rather have a guy like a Heath Miller or Steve Heiden who might not put up 1,000 yards/season, but he makes good tough catches and can block.

If you want another receiver, put another receiver in the game. Frankly, I'd rather we have an average TE but get some draft picks to help us stockpile some defense or OL.

That's one problem w/ being an "outsider". From a talent/ability view - he was clearly someone to build around. Unfortunately, his personal problems would have completely undermined any attempts to foster a "team-first" mentality.

Winslow is the epitome of a "me first" player.

Add in the fact that, if they kept stats on it - percentage-wise, he had to have run the most wrong routes of any player in the history of the NFL, he can't/won't block, etc, etc.

It was a move that needed to be made plain and simple.

I'm not drinkin' the EM coolaid yet, but this is a good start and trading this guy is no where close to "rebuilding", IMO.

I suppose anything is possible. I didn't see this coming. Edwards, I'd say that possible.. Rogers, I don't think so.
