Winslow was going to be the GUY when the Browns drafted him....everyone on the board was seeing GREATNESS in the guy
Yet coming out of school....the knock on KWII was he was selfish (Im a soldier) that he ran bad routes, and everyone knew he did not block well...he was a WR in a TE body.
Now 5 years later its
Get him out of here...he is selfish...runs bad routes...and cant block.
Ill be honest..I really felt the Browns were taking Ben at pick 6

It's very easy to be blinded by team loyalty. Everyone on my favorite team is a great pickup, everyone let go used to be great but now they're junk. With Winslow I think fans have been saying for quite a while that he can't block, lines up wrong, runs bad routes etc. Loved his intensity and ablility to catch but when looking for a TE he needs to do more than that.

You must not have been reading my posts at that time...
This all comes back to the old adage - "you can't teach talent" - and we generally operate under the premise that maturation and coaching can correct the problems most of these kids have coming out of college.
Winslow and Edwards came onto a team out of college w/ no veteran leadership. THEY were expected to be our leaders. Bad move by the both FOs. You can't take on character problems unless your team has the leadership to deal with it.
We haven't had that since we've been back, but we were so talent deprivated, it was a risk they were willing to take.
They were blinded by talent and failed to see the bigger picture - happens all the time - unfortunately we were another victim.
Kellen may be fine in another locker room. Doubt it, but its possible.

Heart says damn we just traded one of my favorite players to watch. My brain says holy sheep dip we might actually get something worth his on the field value. I am impressed.

I was hoping for Sean Taylor that draft, but when he went off the board, Big Ben was my hope....
I didn;t mind picking up Winslow, but when we made the trade to move up one spot to get him, I was pissed as I would've been just as happy with Roy Williams.
Winslow has all the skill and potential in the world to be a hall of fame TE. Hopefully, he starts developing himself as a team guy and learn how to block properly. Until then, he'll put up good numbers but will never be the player his father was.

Obviously Winslow is the type of guy this new regime doesn't want around. He is talented in catching the ball, but has little else to give.. That had to catch Braylon's attention..oh wait , he dropped it

Does anyone think this sends a message to Rogers? i.e. Careful, or you're next - to the Raiders!

This one caught me off guard I expected Edwards to be gone before Winslow. If the trade Edwards now we will be in big trouble. I can't see us getting rid of both of our qb's security blankets and make them learn new or new veterans tendancies and timing.

Uhh, dude, I like you, bet if we lived in the same town we'd be good friends, and really appreciate the genuine enthusiasm you bring to the board, but NO! Lol come on, best TE in the game? I can honestly rattle off 10 TEs I would rather have than KW2.
Taking into consideration all the operations the guy has had on the knees, lack of actual blocking skills, inability to LINE UP correctly, overall cancerous attitude, and the fact that he's a lot slower already and did more damage to this team last year (Denver game: fumble and 4th down drop), and missed 6 games, the MERE POSSIBILITY that we're getting a 2nd rounder for him has me beyond ecstatic...
Yeah, he was a "gamer", was enthusiastic, and was a pretty exciting player, but guys like him aren't what you win championships with. The pros are outweighed by the cons in his case. Yeah the Browns aren't going to be as fun and high-scoring in Madden 2010 because he's not there, but on the field they're be better for it with a TE who can actually block and handle business however.
I don't know if that is guarenteed to be Rucker in the future, but I really like what Heiden does and how he takes care of business like a true professional.

I wanted Larry Fitzgerald in that draft. But he was off the board before our pick.

Maybe I wasn't posting back then, so I cannot back this up in writing, but I HAVE NEVER wanted this "soldier" from the time he blew off lunch with Dan Snyder,...
And as to his blocking,...you ask "knowledgeable 'Cane fan" what they think about not having been able to run the ball like they really wanted to against Ohio State.

More then just Rogers, everyone in the locker room. Miami did something similar to this last year w/ Jason Taylor. Get a me first, high profile, good player to make a point to the rest of the team.

2 things are certain now....
1. KW2's jersey will be at Champs Outlets for $4.25 now.
2. In the Tampa headlines,it will be front page.... "Kellen Winslow injuried outside of Clearwater doing jetski tricks, out for the year"...
KW2 equals addition by subtraction....he was all about himself.

It doesn;t need to be Rucker yet. Heiden is a perfectly capable TE who is well rounded. Hopefully Rucker will develop into a solid TE but right now, I'm very glad we still have Heiden.
That being said, if we draft a TE on the first day this year, I'll b pissed.

Winslow, for all of his positive attrributes, is also physically limited now, and will only decline from here on out. He's also a horrible blocker, and has been a major mouth.
A 2nd and a 5th would make me extremely happy ..... and in fact, would make me think that Kokinis must be one helluva salesman.

I actually figured this would happen, because of his attitude and health problems. Accompany that with the fact we are short on picks, but high on needs and he was definitely on the list of 3 tradeable assets. Now we have 2 more assets with value left (unless we decide to dump Rogers). I look for BE to stay unless we sign another # 1 in FA, but I also expect DA to be sent packing by the middle of March.
NFL Network just reported it is for a 2nd this year and a 5th next year.......damn good value for a nutty (albeit talented) TE.

Heath Miller, Todd Heap, Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzales, Dustin Keller, Benjamin Watson, Kevin Boss, Dallas Clark, Chris Cooley, Jason Witten....
This is based off of money value, locker-room implications, injury history and actually being MULTI-dimensional... things that I'm not too cool with regarding Kellen...

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/11435023CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns traded talented but troublesome tight end Kellen Winslow on Friday to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for undisclosed draft picks. Winslow's five years in Cleveland were marked by injuries and controversy. He missed most of his first two seasons with injuries, but was elected to the Pro Bowl in 2007 after making 82 catches for 1,106 yards. He demanded a new contract after the '07 season. Last season, he was briefly suspended by the Browns after being hospitalized with a staph infection. Winslow was the sixth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. The son of Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow Sr., he had 219 receptions for 2,459 yards and 11 touchdowns in 44 games. While there is no denying Winslow's skills or toughness, his injuries prevented the outspoken former University of Miami All-American from fulfilling his immense potential in Cleveland. He missed the entire 2005 season with a knee injury after he crashed his motorcycle while doing stunts in a parking lot. Winslow then contracted a staph infection in the knee and had to undergo several clean-out procedures. He came back and caught 89 passes in 2006 and followed that up with a Pro Bowl appearance. But Cleveland's drafting of Missouri's Martin Rucker in the fourth round last season was a sign the Browns were preparing for a future without Winslow. And on the first day of free agency, new coach Eric Mangini and general manager George Kokinis decided to cut ties with the 25-year-old. "The Cleveland Browns thank Kellen for his contributions to this organization over the past five years," Kokinis said in a statement. "We appreciate his passion for the game and wish him success in Tampa Bay. The draft picks we have obtained through this deal will give us greater flexibility as we look to infuse more talent and create competition and depth on this football team." Before making the deal, the Browns only had four picks in April's draft. Winslow missed Cleveland's final four games last season with a severely sprained left ankle and he played for weeks with a sprained right shoulder. During his last interview in December, with coach Romeo Crennel's firing expected, Winslow was optimistic about his future in Cleveland. "I love being a Cleveland Brown," he said. "We don't know who's going to be here next year. ... I do want to be back here. I love being here. I love playing here. The fans have stuck by me." Winslow's relationship with the Browns was fractured by an ugly feud with Cleveland's front office. He was briefly suspended for making disparaging remarks about the team, which later rescinded its one-game penalty. In addition to Rucker, the Browns also have tight end Steve Heiden under contract.

The 2 now is good,....but next year's 5,...?
I'd have been happier with a pick this year (i.e. the deep draft,...)
Anyhow, he's gone,...definitely plus from a minus.

He already had his presser with TB Media. He indicated he didn't ask for trade and didn't know about it ahead of time. He said Cleveland treated him well and that he enjoyed his time with Edwards and "Quinn". Interesting.....

the problem is now we also have a hole at TE. we have rucker, an unknown who never blocked and heiden who is coming off an acl injury. hope rucker pans out but i'm glad about this addition by subtraction. since that giants game on mnf, we saw how expendable winslow really was.

A 2nd and a 3rd would be a no brainer. I would be jumping for joy to get that for Winslow.

I was just wondering that myself.
It's going to be hard to say for sure, because Winslow's contract was redone after his motorcycle injury, and I really don;t know how that affected bonuses being prorated, as well as salary changes. It's also hard to know if performance escalators were left in, or added into his contract at that time.

The tradeoff is that with the extra 2nd round pick (50th overall), we can solve a MORE IMPORTANT position than TE.
I know some Browns fans get it, but we won't be a good team until we fix the offensive line AND the defense. If losing Winslow means fixing a position in one of those two areas, then we're coming out WAY WAY ahead.
Furthermore, people need to remember that Winslow wanted a contract extension. There's no way in Hell that would have made sense for this team, so we essentially had him for one more year before things REALLY went to the dogs.
I'll miss his ability to catch the ball, but not his overall production. He hurt our running game far more than people would generally believe. Then there's the lockerroom, which doesn't even need explaining.

absolutely. this is addition by subtraction. that's why i mentioned the giants game. it was clear we didn't need him to succeed. that said, we still need a body in TE and i hope rucker is ready because i don't think we can count on heiden. maybe we'll pick up a vet on the cheap but i agree, a 2nd in this year's draft is huge for us and if we get a 3rd also, fantastic deal. i'm very high on this move.
