Please post all reported visits and FA the Browns are interested in here please

1st visit I´ve seen:

Andre' Goodman-DB- Dolphins Feb. 28 - 11:27 am et

Free agent CB Andre Goodman has visits scheduled with the Broncos Saturday and the Browns on Sunday.
Former Belichick assistants doing battle over the same player. Goodman, who will turn 31 last year, is coming off his best year as a starter. He won't come at the same price as the younger corners like Dominique Foxworth that have already signed.

Goodman would be a decent pick up for the right price.

I like the fact that we are not going after any big name free agents. I wanted to pick up a decent priced corner (which I thought would be Foxworth, but Baltimore threw a ton of money at him), and Derrick Ward. I know, Ward is a pretty big name this year, but that's the only two starters I wanted to sign.

We´re warming up...

James Butler-DB- Giants Feb. 28 - 12:41 pm et

Free agent S James Butler may visit the Browns later Saturday.
Butler is in St. Louis, but it appears he's far apart in contract talks with the Rams. Butler is a solid, if unspectacular, option to start at safety.

I'd have to go with the expert on this one. No one is better at passing or when to pass than GM.

A 31 yr old free agent defensive back, NO Future, NO present. Not a good idea this time of year. If it's late August and you have 3 injured db's, like the situation at the Center position in the past, that's the only time you should consider this.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Only if they change to a 100 man roster.
Some people just have to be not good enough to make the team.

Correction, not even if they changed to a 100 man roster.

What?

Goodman is a decent corner and had a very good year last year. He would be a huge upgrade at nickel back.

Maybe a situational player, Not someone I know alot about, but I'm not a fan of dolphin db's, an older version of Daven Holly. We have different oppinions.

Yeah, we do. I just seem him as an upgrade to Cousins, and I am not counting on Daven Holly coming back from injury. We have no depth at CB, we need to bring some in, and Goodman is decent and probably cheaper than most because he is a bit older, although far from ancient.

Going with GM on this one. We need better in our division IMO. But we are slow playing this one. Do think FA and trades will determine where we are in draft though.

thanks for the excellent thread django

obviously looks like we are looking for 2nd tier depth in DBs -

I think there might be some we are talking with their agents and don't really need the "VISIT"???

Do you or anyone know they visit cause we want to visit with them...or after discussions with their agents they request their agents to set up a visit???

Just wondering.

CJ Mosley to visit Jaguars, Browns

Jets free-agent defensive lineman C.J. Mosley is set to visit Jacksonville on Monday and has a tentative meeting with Cleveland slated for later in the week.

Mosley played for Browns coach Eric Mangini in New York, and could play a 5-technique defensive end for Cleveland, as he did with the Jets. At 6-foot-2 and 305 pounds, he'd project to defensive tackle with Jacksonville.

Mosley made his bones as an NFL player under Mangini with the Jets, where he backed and started in spots, and filled a valuable role in the club's sub packages. In Jacksonville, he'd add depth inside for a club that suffered from the loss of Marcus Stroud, who was traded to Buffalo last year. ]

Well, all I know is...it seems that we are gonna be relatively quite in FA, pretty much signing depth, which we need, but not going after the "big signing"....so I sure hope the K2 trade brings up good picks....we need some talent...I know the best way to build a team is through the draft, but they could have at least went after somebody...at least one decent player....don't ya think...????

Free agent safety James Butler is still visiting the Rams in St. Louis, but by the end of the day, he might be in Cleveland talking to the Browns.

Butler's agent, Carl Poston, said this morning he and his brother, Kevin, are talking contract with St. Louis. But it doesn't sound like the negotiations are very hot.

"Well, we're talking. We're still a bit apart," Poston said. "You know how it is with these things: sometimes it's tough to tell if you're 5 yards apart, 10 yards apart or whatever."

When asked if he expected Butler to sign with the Rams and their new head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who was Butler's defensive coordinator with the Giants for the past two seasons, Poston said, "No, I don't think a deal will be struck today."

Poston confirmed the Browns are next on Butler's itinerary and that he has tentative plans to fly to Cleveland later today. Poston said those plans aren't in stone because they're "contingent" on what happens with the Rams. But if he doesn't expect a deal from St. Louis to be completed, it's safe to say Butler's trip to Cleveland is almost a certainty.

As for the Giants, Poston said, "(Butler's) a free agent. They can step up at any time." When told Butler said last week he'd keep the Giants in the loop, Poston said, "I think they want him back, but honestly they have bigger fish to fry right now. We might wind up talking to them soon. We'll see."

Giants free-agent safety James Butler a likely candidate for Cleveland Browns

by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter
Saturday February 28, 2009, 10:29 PM

CLEVELAND -- Giants free agent safety James Butler was scheduled to visit the Browns Saturday after leaving St. Louis earlier in the day without an agreement.

Butler's agent, Carl Poston, told the Newark Star-Ledger on Saturday that the strong safety would head to Cleveland Saturday afternoon if he wasn't signed by the Rams by then. A source told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Butler left St. Louis still hoping a deal could be worked out. With the Rams, Butler would be reunited with new head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who was his coordinator the past two years in New York.

"Well, we're talking. We're still a bit apart," Carl Poston told the Star-Ledger Saturday morning. "You know how it is with these things: Sometimes it's tough to tell if you're 5 yards apart, 10 yards apart or whatever."

In Cleveland, Butler would replace safety Sean Jones, who's had a quiet first two days of free agency. Neither Jones nor his agent, Brian Mackler, returned messages Saturday. A Browns spokesman couldn't confirm Butler's visit.

Butler (6-3, 215) was originally signed by the Giants as an undrafted rookie out of Georgia Tech in 2005. He led the Giants with 10 tackles in their 17-14 Super Bowl victory over the Patriots after the 2007 season, and finished 2008 with 68 tackles and three interceptions for 62 yards.

Poston said he has several other teams interested, "but nothing set up beyond Cleveland." He said it's also possible Butler could return to the Giants.

If Butler did go through with his scheduled visit, it marked the first of the free agency period for the Browns, who haven't been active in the frenzied first wave.

Davis to Denver: Seven-year Browns linebacker Andra Davis signed a two-year deal with the Broncos on Saturday, a source said. Davis, the Browns' fifth-round pick in 2002, finished the 2008 season with 90 tackles, including 62 solo. Davis, who led the Browns in tackles in three of his last six seasons, played in 105 games and totaled 789 tackles. He had a career-high 199 in 2005.

McGinest undecided: A source close to Browns free agent linebacker Willie McGinest said he'd return in 2009 for the right opportunity. McGinest said before the 2008 season that he'd retire after the year. But he was noncommittal even after the season finale in Pittsburgh. McGinest and Browns coach Eric Mangini were in New England together, but it's not known if Mangini is interested in re-signing him.

Big names on the move: The Browns have sat back and watched as some of the top names in free agency have moved on. Former Ravens linebacker Bart Scott signed a 6-year, $48 million deal with the Jets and Giants free agent running back Derrick Ward is headed for a visit in Denver on Sunday, according to profootballtalk.com. Ward visited the Bengals on Saturday but left without a deal. Ravens safety Jim Leonhard also visited the Jets on Saturday, but there was no word of a deal.

i wonder why the browns aren't after Leonhard. Kokonis should know him.

Denver sure is trying to stock up on RB's. Buckhalter, Arrington and now talking to Ward.

Things should start to pick up now- the big names are just about gone- and the mark is being set for the second tier talent.

edit: just discovered that Arrington did not sign the contract with Denver- guess that explains the interest in Ward.

It looks like Jones' attempt for probowler type money went down the crapper. He seems to not be getting any play from anybody. I'm willing to suggest that he resigns here at a cap friendly price. I also wouldn't be shocked if they still bring in someone to compete with him.

His lackluster play last year hurt him. The injury might have had something to do with it. I think of all the time that him and Pool would be arguing after one was beat. Many blamed Pool it seemed, but maybe it was Jones making the wrong call and Pool being out of position because of it. Just a guess, but it makes me wonder, since when Pool was playing at his spot, he seemed to play better.

Not for nothing, but that could be the precise reason they aren't going after him.... Maybe Koks knows that he's not worth it?

I am still hoping he re-signs here for a fair rate. Though, with Dawkins and Considine both leaving Philly, I could see Philly overpaying for him. Time will tell.

Though if he were to leave, wouldn't we get a compensatory pick (assuming we remain relatively inactive in the FA market)?

Browns could be next stop for Greer
Sunday, March 01, 2009
Posted By Albert Breer 2:42 PM

Free-agent cornerback Jabari Greer, late of the Bills, has wrapped up a visit with the Detroit Lions and could be headed to Cleveland next.

The Browns have shown interest since the start of the free-agency period. Cleveland is hosting Dolphins cornerback Andre Goodman today.

New coach Eric Mangini is looking for a player to compete with or replace incumbent right corner Brandon McDonald to play opposite Eric Wright

I think Leonhard just wanted to give the Jets first dibs because he wanted to be reunited with his old cooridinator and knows how to play in his system. I think he would be an upgrade to Adams and Sorenson. He has shown that he could start and be effective but I think teams are looking to sign him for less then starting money because he doesnt look to be the long term awnser. Not that there is at many positions anyways.

Goodman signed with the Broncos

BRONCOS KEEP COLLECTING PLAYERS
Posted by Mike Florio: Sunday, March 1, 2009 7:48 PM
The Denver Broncos aren't necessarily signing the biggest names on the free-agent market, but they're cornering the market on sheer numbers.

The latest addition is cornerback Andre Goodman, formerly of the Dolphns.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, it's a five-year, $25 million deal, with $10 million in guaranteed money.

Goodman, a seven-year veteran, spent his first four seasons in Detroit and the last three in Miami. He started in every game last season for the first time in his career.

I'll play with what we have before I want the FO to fork over that kind of $$$ (guaranteed no less) to backup fodder.

Congrats Mr. Goodman........you just won the power ball of FA stupidity...lol.

J/C....how can this possibly be and why would we have a thread about FA visits? We have been assured by some knowledgeable posters that there is on FA out there that will consider going to Cleveland because NO ONE in the league wants to play for Mangini.

Personally, I think the Broncos are idiots.

We are going to get better play simply with a different approach and attitude. We will be improved, IMO, even if we don't sign a single FA.

And as long as we don't trade Edwards or Rogers ...

1. Goodman was better than Wright and McDonald last season

2. Foxworth deal (4 years, 27.2mil, 16.5 guaranteed) set a very high bar for CBs...CBs are more expensive anyway, every offseason

3. compared to Foxworth, the Goodman deal was good...he is better (short term) and comes in cheaper

That said...I´m still happy we didn´t sign him...not because of the money, 5 years is too much..also: he is on the short side and we already have 2 of those

2008 Goodman was the best of the FA-CBs out there...

I just don't understand all the emphasis on FA CB's and FA WR's. I know that the big play potential is there, but neither is involved consistently on every single play.

When i look at the contracts that the FA corners and offensive lineman (especially guards) are getting- it just makes it that much more apparent that you need to draft these guys. They are just too expensive on the FA market for the quality of player that you get. For example- look at Goodman's deal with Denver. 5 mil a year- that's just crazy. I can't see a huge drop off from this guy to the next guy in talent. Hopefully the contract is cut in half, much better bargain. Denver did get a good deal in Dawkins though- that kind of sets the celing at around 3 million a year for other safeties.

"New coach Eric Mangini is looking for a player to compete with or replace incumbent right corner Brandon McDonald to play opposite Eric Wright"

I think thats an IGNORANT ASSumption by these Sport journalist.

the are ASSuming that we are bringing in all these 2nd tier CBs to replace McD which is just wrong and that is the kind of thing McD will read and start questioning the coach. When its obvious...we simply do not have ANY DEPTH what so ever!!!

they are in here to compete for and hopefully have the 3rd , 4th, n 5th CB on our team. Hey if one of them beats out one of our 2 for the starting spot...All the better.

But I guarantee you we are not looking remotely to offer "STARTING" money for a CB in FAgency. And if they are asking for it...watch them leave town.

I don't think Goodman was better than Wright or McDonald last year.

Goodman was on a team that had 40 sacks. So the QB clearly had pressure often. Making it easier to cover players. He had 5 INT's.

Wright and McDonald were on a team that had 17 sacks. So the QB clearly didn't have pressure often. McDonald equaled Goodman's total of 5 with no pass rush. Eric Wright had 3 INT's with no pass rush.

Imagine what Wright and McDonald could do if they were on a team that had 40 sacks.

Goodman just signed...10 mil guarantee 24 mil contract. Lot of money for somebody with that little talent if you ask me. Again...I don't think any of these guys can hold McD's jock - we don't mind the competition but the reality is we don't expect a starter from the 2nd tier...just much needed depth. Obviously Denver thinks they got a starter. They are in for a rude awakening.

I´m sure none of you guys saw him play last year...he had a great season. He is old and small but he´s a better short term fix than Foxworth and a lot of other CBs out there

Consider this: who was interested? DEN and us, right? 2 HCs that played him twice last season (and before that too)....think about it...just for a moment, ok?

Most Dolphins fans are upset too...I would have been ok if we´d have signed him...and yes, for that $/year too (not the years though)

Cleveland Browns not an active player in free agency so far

CLEVELAND -- Are the Browns being smart in treading cautiously in free agency, or are they having difficulty attracting players?

The answer may be yes and yes.

They haven't pursued any high-profile players in the first four days of free agency. But the ones they have pursued have not exactly been enthused about the Browns.

They wanted to visit with Miami cornerback Andre Goodman. He chose to sign with Denver for five years, $25 million.

They wanted to visit with Giants safety James Butler. He's leaning to signing with the Rams.

Next up may be Jets defensive lineman C.J. Mosley, if he doesn't sign with Jacksonville first.

Coming up may be visits by Baltimore safety Jim Leonhard and Tennessee returner/cornerback Chris Carr.

Why would the Browns have an interest in Carr, who is strictly a return specialist? We don't know the answer to that one yet, but word out of Nashville, Tenn., is that Carr has a Cleveland visit on his itinerary. Carr was in Detroit on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the only Browns free agent to sign has been linebacker Andra Davis with Denver. No other Browns player has visited another team, based on reports.

A player like that gets offered $25M, 10 guaranteed. Of course he doesn't go on another visit. He takes the money before Denver wises up.

Hmmmm, a Pro Bowl quality safety has yet to have a visit? A lot of other DBs are getting calls.
