It's driving me nutso. I took a night off and stayed home to catch up on all the FA happenings and the last day or so has been difficult to get the pages to load.

If this site doesn't work but other sites do, then it's the board.
Purple (though the donations aren't accumulating as expected) has the necessary things on order to GREATLY improve the functionability (word I just made up) of this site. It's coming soon, but until then the board is going to crap out at times.

Yeah this is the only site i really have problems with. I'll send my donation in today too, originally thought i'd wait since Purp just put the Paypal up recently i figured he would get a bunch of donations right away then it would be slow for a while but if he's ready to upgrade and just needing the dough to do it i'll send it in now.

Yes, sometimes it takes forever to load and sometimes it doesn't load at all.
But Purp is working on it... just needs more time and a little more money and he'll get it working perfect..
He'll hate me for saying this, but if you can,, drop a few bucks on him through the paypal account.... it will help.

In truth, part of why I started this thread last night was to gently remind people that things will get better if they pony up a few bucks. I was glad to see Ref 1 mention the upgrades.

Stop nudging me. Yeah i donated, like i said in my post earlier i was planning on doing it anyways i was just holding off cause Purp just put it up recently and i figured he'd get a bunch of donations right away and then it would drop off and my donation would help fill the gap.

I really don't feel comfortable giving out numbers, but I'm gonna do it anyway so that hopefully folks will understand where things are at: Quote:

I think Purp said the new equipment is around $2k. I doubt our cheap asses got close to that.
I'm up to just over $2,300 on it and am looking at a minimum of another $300 just to get it shipped to and installed in the new datacenter. It's all been paid for up front out of pocket (with the help of the current donations) with the hopes that the donations and such would backfill.
All parts have been ordered and are in hand or en route to be here by Wednesday. The majority of the machine was assembled last evening, actually. If you wanna see it, here are some pics I took last night to show a few friends: Server Pic 01 Server Pic 02 Server Pic 03 Server Pic 04
What you see there is a Supermicro 2U rackmount server case, a Supermicro dual Socket771 motherboard, two 2.33GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon processors, eight 2GB Fully Buffered ECC DDR2 DIMMs for a total of 16GB of RAM. The add-on card you see is a SIMLP-IPMI card for remote management - as long as there is power to the machine, even if it is turned off, I will be able to control it and have KVM-over-IP. Then, there are hot swap trays for 8 hard drives. We will be running 6 of them, Seagate 7200.11 750GB, in a RAID 10 -- and there will be two more drives (yet to be purchased) that will be in the last two bays as "cold" spares so that I won't need to ship a drive in the event of a failure.
As a comparison to the hardware we are currently on:
The current machine is a single-core Athlon64 3500+ with 1GB of ram and only two 250GB hard drives. We will now have 8 cores and 16GB ram and 6 active drives.
It is a quantum-leap ahead in performance capacity.

I'm a stubborn S.O.B. ... it'll get done the way I want it, no matter what. It's just a matter of how much of the burden gets shared.
To date: There have been 27 donors and they have contributed a total of 712.01. To be completely honest and transparent, the number of donors is much lower than I thought it would be... however, the total amount donated thus far from that lower number astounds me, and is really very touching. There is no way I could have gotten as far as I have with this without those donations. I could have come close, but there is no way I could have gotten it done already... we'd still be probably two months out from getting to this point if I had to do it all on my own. On the behalf of EVERYONE here - A huge Thank You to all who have given.

Looks like we should almost be able to talk in real-time with all that speed! I thought donations would work better, too. Is there less traffic this time of year than during the season? Doesn't seem like too many leave and come back.

I donated the other week, but I didn't give much. I had said afterward that I didn't realize how much money the upgrade was costing. I'll definitely have to throw a few more bones in.
On the other hand, I don't think we as posters should make others feel obligated to donate or treat them differently for not doing so. It is a free site, and although it is appreciated, people don't have to pay anything to use it.

I agree that we shouldn't pressure people into donating. Gentle reminders don't hurt, though.

This point is a big part of why I wasn't really comfortable sharing the numbers.
I feel that it is a Catch-22 for me...
... I want to be able to let folks know, with clarity and transparency, where things stand... but I don't want to come across as begging, pressuring or trolling for dollars.
This is a very big undertaking and I greatly appreciate anything anyone is able to do to help because, quite frankly, I don't relish spending every dime I have on something like this. Don't get me wrong... for a geek like me it is a very cool, and very fun undertaking, but as with anyone, that is money that easily could go other places ... but at the same time I do not expect or demand this of anyone, nor do I want to be even remotely accused of guilting or shaming people into donating.

that's all well and good. But Purp is a working stiff like the rest of us... he's doing all of this on his own.. and we benefit from it in monster ways..
I hate that Browns board associated to the main site,, haven't been there in ages and if I have my way, I won't go there again..
When the Browns kicked us to the curb without so much as a kiss goodbye, Purp put up his own money and gave us a home that was like the old one.
He deserves our support in anyway we can.
Having said that, I understand that things are tough all over.. money is tight, I'm doing what everyone else is doing and that's cutting out the non-essentials.. But this isn't a big amount of money..
1, 2, 5, 10 or 20 bucks isn't much to ask for to keep this "HOME" up and running.
Help out if you can... if you can't.. I think we all understand that. But try..

Oh I understand PPE. I wasn't actually saying that you're making others feel obligated. That is a HUGE chunk of change to put into this place. Way more than I would have thought. Reminding people to do it is fine, I just hope other posters don't actually get on posters for not doing it. At least your geek ass enjoys it as something to do.

I just now disabled ads from my donation and I gotta say WOW! The pages load lickety-split now......and I never was an ad-clicker anyway no matter what. I'm a remote control clicker....I just don't do commercials normally.

Purp~I understand your concern. Personally, I'm a numbers kinda a gal. Put it in front of me in black and white (or black and orange as the case may be here) and it helps me see where you're at and how far you are from your goal. I like that concrete number. It may or may not encourage others to donate, but it MAY encourage those they may donate to put in an extra buck or $20 to get you closer to that goal.
I don't view it as you pimping for money here, just keeping us informed.

Same with me. I would rather know what's going on than to just toss money to someone and have no idea where it's going.
