Broncos QB Cutler miffed at the team after trade talks surface

Associated Press

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Trade talks involving Jay Cutler have strained the relationship between the Denver Broncos' franchise quarterback and new head coach Josh McDaniels.

Before quarterback Matt Cassel was traded from the New England Patriots to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Cutler's name came up in a proposed three-way deal that would have brought Cassel to Denver and landed Cutler with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jay Cutler's agent, Bus Cook, said that as of Sunday night, the Broncos have not planned a sit-down meeting to reconcile with Cutler, Adam Schefter reports.

McDaniels was the Patriots' offensive coordinator last season when he helped guide Cassel, a career backup since high school, to an 11-5 record following Tom Brady's season-ending knee injury on opening weekend.

Cutler, the 11th overall pick out of Vanderbilt in the 2006 draft, told The Denver Post he was angry that his name even came up in trade talks and said he still believes he's on the trading block -- something McDaniels denies.

"We don't want to trade Jay. We never did," McDaniels told the newspaper. "He's our quarterback."

McDaniels noted that the Broncos didn't initiate the trade talks, only listened. Left unsaid, however, was anything about whether the Broncos nixed the proposed deal.

Cutler, the face of the franchise, isn't convinced the Broncos still aren't trying to trade him.

"I'm upset. I mean, I'm really shocked at this point," Cutler told The Post. "I could see why they want Cassel. I don't know if they think I can't run the system or I don't have the skills for it. Or if they don't think they can sign me with my next contract. I just don't know what it is. I've heard I'm still on the trading block."

Cutler's agent, James "Bus" Cook, said his client had every right to be upset with the Broncos for even entertaining an offer for the Pro Bowl quarterback.

"Because that's a vote of no confidence in the guy," Cook told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I don't care if you're talking about trading him for Matt Cassel, Matt Ryan or Tom Brady. That's a vote of no confidence in him, and that's how Jay sees it, and I would, too.

"I don't know if they were actively seeking to trade Jay, but on the other hand, I don't know that they were turning a deaf ear to potential offers, either."

Even if the Broncos didn't initiate the trade talks, Cook argued that Cutler has every right to be upset.

"What led people to believe that there's a possibility that Jay Cutler could be traded? Somewhere somebody had to give the inclination that he's on the block," Cook said. "Why else would you call? Nobody's going to call the Giants and ask for Eli (Manning). Nobody's calling the Colts asking about Peyton (Manning). Brady? Come on. So, why call Denver and ask about Jay?

"And if they do call, why not say, 'That's not for discussion. What else do you want?'"

A Broncos spokesman told The Associated Press on Sunday that neither McDaniels, newly promoted general manager Brian Xanders nor team owner Pat Bowlen would have anything else to say publicly about the matter.

The organization believed it had adequately addressed the issue by talking to The Post and didn't want to perpetuate the story, team spokesman Patrick Smyth said.

However, it's certain to have long, long legs in this football-crazed state, where John Elway won two Super Bowls in the 1990s and where Cutler raised eyebrows last season by comparing his arm strength to that of Elway in his prime.

Cutler's status with the Broncos, not the free-agency signing of seven-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins, was all anybody wanted to debate on Denver sports talk radio Sunday. Some blamed the 25-year-old Cutler's immaturity for the controversy, while others pinned the blame on McDaniels' naivete for not realizing his talented, young quarterback would react the way he did.

Cutler, who has three years left on the six-year contract he signed as a rookie, is by far the best player McDaniels inherited from former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan, who had built a terrific young offense around the quarterback even while neglecting a defense that more than anything probably led to his firing.

Cutler told The Post he believes his relationship with McDaniels has "taken a few steps backward."

"I don't know if the relationship is irreconcilably broken," Cook said. "But I know that as much as he's meant to the organization and that ballclub, if there were attempts to trade him, then I think Jay Cutler is 100 percent right to be more than just a little bit miffed."

Cutler is 17-20 with no playoff appearances since supplanting Jake Plummer as Denver's quarterback late in the 2006 season, and he's known for his petulant, moody personality in his dealings with teammates and the media.

"There's an awful lot of smoke for there not to be a fire," Cook said. "If they were in fact trying to trade Jay Cutler, then I think that's a situation that's going to cause a very serious problem for the organization.

"If they weren't, maybe he forgives and forgets. But if they were, that's going to be a very difficult situation to repair."

Ouch...McDaniels really stepped into it. My question to all of you is...What does this mean? If Cutler causes enough trouble what will Denver do? Who will they look to trade for, if they will want to trade at all.

Would anyone on here want to work a deal for him? I know that Ammo thinks we should trade Quinn for him. Has he shown anyone else that he can be a winner? What would this do to any value that DA might have?

I can see the Jets might wanting to make a deal considering that the have Clements. Possibly the Niners or Chicago. I don't think we would be interested at all. If we were, we should probably be a little smarter than Denver was.

Yet today, Peter King says that Cutler had ASKED FOR A TRADE weeks ago when his QB coach left.

Cutler is officially a turd. Trade for him? No way in Hell.

Yes, the Denver Broncos want Jay Cutler to return for a little sit down to mend fences after the team's reported failed attempt to trade for New England quarterback Matt Cassel. Cutler won't have any of it after the two sides spoke by telephone Sunday.

"They want me to come in and talk to 'em but I'm not doing it right now; I'm going to lay low," said Cutler. "The [Broncos] deny everything. That's a problem. We know for a fact they tried to trade me."

The Broncos have denied reports of their trade talks with the Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions. They have characterized any dialogue as "inquiries" not initiated by the team, even though multiple sources have confirmed the Broncos' interest in Cassel, who was dealt Saturday by the Patriots to the Chiefs.

"He's not the only person in the last few days we've received calls on," new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels told the Denver Post. "We've received trade calls on a number of players, which is not uncommon this time of the year. I also think the sensitivity of the other trade that was occurring, with my relationship with New England and the whole Cassel thing, I think that stirred the pot even more."

Highlights of the best moments from Jay Cutler in 2008.
McDaniels was the Patriots' offensive coordinator last season when he helped guide Cassel, a career backup since high school, to an 11-5 record following Tom Brady's season-ending knee injury on opening weekend.

Cutler, the 11th overall pick out of Vanderbilt in the 2006 draft, told The Denver Post he was angry that his name even came up in trade talks and said he still feels he's on the trading block -- something McDaniels denies.

"We don't want to trade Jay," McDaniels said. "We never did. He's our quarterback. We're excited about this season. And excited about what we're doing here in free agency to improve our team."

Sources say that the Bucs offered first- and fourth-round picks to the Broncos for Cutler, and that the Lions offered their second-round pick (No. 33) and possibly a future pick. The deal would have involved the Broncos getting Cassel from the Patriots.

Cutler was scheduled to return to Denver this week to continue learning the team's new playbook under McDaniels. A source close to Cutler said that the quarterback is "too stung" by the trade talks and has refused to speak with McDaniels by phone, let alone travel from his Tennessee home back to Denver.

Team officials were in contact with his agent, Bus Cook, on Saturday and Sunday to deny their involvement and reinforce their commitment to Cutler. Cook said Cutler has every right to be upset.

"Because that's a vote of no confidence in the guy," Cook told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I don't care if you're talking about trading him for Matt Cassel, Matt Ryan or Tom Brady. That's a vote of no confidence in him, and that's how Jay sees it and I would, too.

"I don't know if they were actively seeking to trade Jay, but on the other hand, I don't know that they were turning a deaf ear to potential offers, either."

It was during their call Sunday with Cook that the Broncos tried to schedule a meeting that the quarterback isn't interested in, at the moment.

A Broncos spokesman told The AP on Sunday that neither McDaniels, newly promoted general manager Brian Xanders nor team owner Pat Bowlen would have anything else to say publicly about the matter.

The organization felt it had adequately addressed the issue by talking to The Post and didn't want to perpetuate the story, team spokesman Patrick Smyth said.

It sure appears that Cutler isn't gonna be a Bronco next season, and Denver has to get a young QB in return. And Brandon Marshall is going to get suspended because he can't stay out of the police cruiser.

Personally, I would try real hard to move Quinn and Edwards for Cutler. You get a proven young stud, and you have 3 top 40 picks to build your defense and pick up a WR.

You know the Jets, Lions, Bears, and Bucs are all going to be going after Cutler, but we have something none of them have to offer.

He sounds like a baby. Booohooo, so the team thought about trading you. So what. Give them a reason not to. Their last three games, all losses I might add, he went 2 TD's and 4 INT's. And if they had won just one of them, they would have clinched a playoff birth.

I'm not saying their collapse was all his fault but he better quit being so thin-skinned in this business. If I was the Broncs GM, I'd be more than happy to keep him....but he isn't untouchable by any stretch of the imagination. Heck, Denver was getting mighty sick of John Elway just before T.Davis showed up.

If I'm reading this right, Denver didn't try to trade him, but the phone rang and they picked it up and there was discussion about a trade. Obviously, to date, nothing came of it and it doesn't sound as if McDaniels wants to make a move.. (like I said, Doesn't sound like it)

SO, what is McDaniels or the GM or the owner supposed to do, NOT ANSWER THE PHONE when it rings? Are they supposed to know that whoever is calling has a trade for the QB in mind?

Caution, we only have heard one side of this so there may be more to it.. usually there is. But assuming this info is accurate, then I don't get Cutler at all.

Cutler is not someone I would want to trade for. He's not very good skills wise, and his attitude is crappy. No thanks.

Yes, I think you have the correct summary of the situation so far.

I suppose Cutler is ticked they didn't say, "No way....Jay is out guy" and then slam the phone down.

Instead, they actually listened to the offer and then, oh my, thought about trading him. Nothing happened and he's still their guy. Man, fragile ego!

Good lord, teams have to listen to trade talks, what is someone offers up something totally crazy like thier entire draft for a player (Ala the Saints getting Ricky WIlliams) or something equally crazy like the Vikings offered Dallas for Herchel Walker back in the 80's.

Who is most likely the most untouchable player on our roster? Shaun Rogers? or Joe Thomas? I don't want to see either of them gone but if some team comes along and offers me the sun, stars and the moon for either,,, I gotta take a serious look....

I don't consider that disrespect toward Rogers or Thomas.. not at all. Would any of you?

I'd trade anyone for a H.Walker type deal (or at least listen to the offer and think about it).

No question about it. for big rough and tough football players, these guys sure get the feelings hurt easily... I know the egos are big and they are somewhat pampered at all, but isn't there a time when reason takes over?

The other side of the story is that McDaniels was actively trying to trade him. He then lied to Cutler about it. The second part is what Cutler is so ticked off about.

What's the truth? I have no idea. I'm sure more will come out.

DEN did more than "just pick up the phone"

"I'm sure Belichick doesn't mind doing something good for Cassel (giving him his own promising team to pilot) and Pioli (giving him something better than Tyler Thigpen), but I believe if Denver offered Belichick its first-round pick last Thursday instead of, apparently, on Saturday, that Cassel would be a Bronco today and current Denver QB Jay Cutler a Buc or Lion. "

There are other rumors that Jay asked to be traded 2-3 weeks ago when their quaterbacks coach was let go (like someone mentioned above)......so who knows what's going on in Denver.

Even then, dude is a wimp (I'd still want him as my QB though).

McDaniels obviously feels that Matt is a very good QB and a better fit for his system ...

Cutler has a very strong arm and is pretty accurate all over the field .. but he does not make the best decisions ... I would prefer my QB's to be alot smarter than Cutler appears to be .... but Jay sure does do alot of things very well .... Rocket ... pretty accurate on both short and deep tosses... mobile .. he has lots of positives .. the mental part is his only downfall and he is by no means a complete dunce ... he just makes bad decisions a little to often to make him a "smart" QB IMO ..

with that said ... and even though Matt fits the system better .. I think Josh is NUTS .... but i will also say ... that maybe Noodle Arm Cassell is better than we think ... the GM and OC from his old team both wanted him .. well thats IF what SI (the enquirer of sports rags) says is true ... and thats an awful BIG IF .....

we'll find out over the next couple of years ....

I know that's what the article says that Cutler and his agent believe, but what's the truth.. did they try or not. according to McDaniels, they didn't initiate anything.. But according to Cutler and his agent, The Broncos did initiate talks.

I guess if Cutler knows 100% for sure and then McDaniels lied to him about it, I'd be pretty ticked off also.. I'd have to tell him just be a man and tell me.. hell, they all know that it's business.. not personal.

But if I'm Cutler, and I"m 100% sure the Broncos started the dialog to trade him and I'm not prepared to say how I know for sure that they were, then if I'm Cutler, I keep it out of the press.. because if you don't, it makes him look like an infant..

Sometimes, fighting these wars in the press is just not the smart thing to do. This may be one of those times... Same thing could probably be said for Rogers here as well.

Again, you may be right,, don't know. But it sure is stupid to let the cat out of the bag like either Cutler did or the Broncos did..

and no, I don't get it either

I think that is sort of stock in trade for the big arms.

I don't know if it is so much poor decisions as decisions that just didn't work....there is a bit of a difference.

Trying to explain that...I guess a weaker armed QB who doesn't try a throw might get credit as protecting the ball for not being able to make the throw....if that makes any sense.

On one hand, big arms zip the ball past defenders turned heads or really squeeze one in...which gives them part of the mystique people drool over, yet on the other hand they throw some picks you wish you had back.

"and that the Lions offered their second-round pick (No. 33) and possibly a future pick. "

Geeshh whats with the value on QBs - A 2nd rounder (regardless if its the first one of the 2nd round) for a position that in the past would bring on an offer of 2 First round picks???

What is going on??? unless the NFL doesn't not value Cutler as a possible Franchise QB that the Mayock driven Sports Media believe he is???

Could it possibly be the Diabetes TYPE 1 pretty severe. Where he has a devise plugged in to monitor his sugar levels and pump Insulin or not...???

I remember (a long time ago mind you) the best athlete I have ever seen before or since. Early to mid 70's a guy won't use his name. Power speed just incredible for his day and age! Was a Lacrosse scholarship player...kids would bounce off of him. Well he got an Invite to the Giants training camp. And once he had an insulin reaction. Basically he immediately goes into a slow motion state (literally) and finally going to the ground with eyes rolling in his head. Sugar - about 15 packs had to be poured down his throat...5 minutes later he was ready to go! He was cut after this happened in Camp. greatest athlete I ever met.

Obviously medications have changed but still it must be scary to have Type 1 diabetes where you must still inject Insulin into your system and then with excercise have the body shut down with insulin reaction??? Who knows it might be an issue?

Multiple national reporters are confirming Cutler's story from their "sources". One of the ESPN reporters stated his source was from inside the Tampa Bay organization. Whatever the story is, it is definitely a mess.

I agree Peen... most athletes who are extremely gifted, such as a QB with a canon, often rely on that gift and don't work as hard to develop other skills like reading defenses or making smart decisions... they just rely on the fact that more often than not, they can zip it in there, no matter how small the window...

QBs without canons learn other ways to get the job done and part of that is taking less risks and being more precise...

I think if you were to look at this situation logically,Denver did much more than pickup the phone.
This was to be a three team deal.Working out the logistics with two other teams takes much more than a "hello, this is Josh."

I don't know that I agree they don't work as hard. maybe some do, but in Cutlers case, he is accurate.

They just have another weapon the others don't, and sometimes it leads to a pick here and there.

Oh god ya ... hes as good as I've ever seen at that ... he also has such a strong arm and is so accurate on the move he actually gets away with throwing across his body and throwing across the field ... TWO HUGE NO NO'S for 99.372 % of NFL QB's ..

Peenie .. U sitting down .. if not u may wanna .. *L* ..

I agree with what u said ... he is so good he sometimes "thinks" he can throw it through people .. *L* ...

I just don't really care about the why .. its a dumb decision to try and thread it into an unthreadable spot EVEN if you've gotten away with it before ... its a risk/reward thing with me ... and i ABSOLUTELY COVET INTELLIGENCE in my QB's over anything else other than Accuracy ... there a 1A. and 1B thing with me ..

but I do agree with the "why" u presented .. even though I presented it more articulatly ... and thats gotta sting as i am unarticulate ... I'm worse than some of u rednecks ..... *LOL* ...

I also know he carried Denver on his back last year. They had no running game and absolutely NO defense whatsoever. Denver lived and died by their passing game.

I don't know much about his leadership skills, IMO that would be the biggest thing we'd give up because from what I know about Quinn, I love his leadership ability.

I think Cutler was basically forced into making some poor decisions last year because he had to throw so much.

I am a redneck....and proud to say so.

I just don't think it's a dumb decision to try to make plays....especially when you can and have proven so.

I do understand what you are saying, but every pick in tight quarters isn't because of a faulty thought process or a poor throw.

Sometimes that is just the way it goes in a game.

Face it....you don't get picked if you don't throw.

Dumb decisions are trying to do things you can't.

Just because it didn't work doesn't mean it was a dumb decision. It just didn't work.

People don't call fumbles by backs or dropped passes by receivers dumb decisions.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I just don't think it's a dumb decision to try to make plays....

Hey, I'm a redneck too...

So many factors go into it.. down and distance, score and point of the game.... record and point of the season... etc... There is a line where taking a risk to make a play goes from being a good idea to being a poor decision and that line is constantly moving... There could be a situation where trying to thread a pass in while down by 9 and trying to comeback late is an acceptable risk but in a different situation, that exact same pass is stupid........ That's why QBs make the big money and get to do the commercials, because they have about 4/10ths of a second to make that decision and either get rid of the ball or don't......

Which takes me right back to many of my other posts... I'd rather have a guy that can make that decision correctly more often than not than the guy who simply tries to throw it through a brick wall.

Ok so like this amuses me, for reasons I will not mention. Jay Cutler is a helluva stud QB. McDaniels is an idiot. I'm glad he is not our coach. Not that Mangini is much better. But that McDaniels better kiss up to Cutler really fast and really hard because he is the only good thing going on in Denver right now. The rest of their team sucketh. I mean, they are signing Browns rejects to their team. On Defense. Come on. Buy a brain.

No disagreement there....I don't see how that pertains to Cutler. He's a lot more than some guy throwing it as hard as he can.

Would you trade for Cutler?

Maybe Shaun Rodgers/Brady Quinn for Jay Cutler and a 3rd?

I know I would.

THAT trade? Heck NO. I don't want Denver finally getting it right w/ a Browns defender if its friggin' ROGERS. He's gotta stay.

Just went to profootballtalk.com didn't you???

Yep but not allowed to post the content, So i figured I would post the spirit of the rumor

Yeah Denver may get Rodgers but we get a legit young elite QB. I will take the best QB over the best DT everyday of the week.

It's at Yahoo Sports now too. Colin Cowherd just talked about it.

Also, Cowherd says everyone should bet on Cleveland to rock again soon. He loves everything this new regime is doing.

I wouldn't do that. not because Cutler isn't any good,, but I get the feeling that Brady can be pretty good also and we'd be giving up a NT that is a beast. Just settle the issues with him and all will be fine.

Secondly, Cutler has a health issue. He's diabetic. I know they've come a long way with treatment for that, but still, he's got it and it can take him out of games at any moment.

Sorry, I'd pass for both reasons.. JMO however.

Isn't this discrimination? I mean really in any other job wouldn't you be sued in a heartbeat for a comment like that? We should get an aryan football team..

You can't be serious and if you are, I don't know what to say.
