With Kurt Warner secure as their quarterback, the Arizona Cardinals went out to help the defense by reaching a deal with cornerback Bryant McFadden.

McFadden, according to a source, agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract that has a simple structure. McFadden will make $5 million in 2009 and $5 million in 2010. The source indicated that the entire salary for 2009 is guaranteed.

As one of the best players remaining in free agency, McFadden had some interesting options. He could have returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers as a starter or signed with Philadelphia or Miami, which both expressed interest.

The 27-year-old cornerback came into his own in 2008 and helped the Steelers win a Super Bowl ring. He started eight games and had two interceptions, but he played particularly well during the final weeks of the season and during the playoffs.

A former second-round pick, McFadden had 18 starts in four seasons with the Steelers.

Cleveland Browns still talking to New York Jets' free agents
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Monday March 09, 2009, 3:18 PM

CLEVELAND -- While the Browns continue negotiating with one New York Jet free agent, they have begun talking with yet another.

The agent for linebacker David Bowens said he and the Browns are still talking, but there's nothing new to report.

Eric Barton, another Jets linebacker, also has met with the Browns. Barton, 30, led the Jets in tackles last year. He started 46 of 48 games in three years under former Jets coach Eric Mangini.

Meanwhile, the Browns have hired Neil Gulkis as director of public relations.

Gulkis spent the last 12 years with the Miami Dolphins. Prior to that, he worked nine years with the New Orleans Saints.

Gulkis will be responsible for day-to-day operations of the Browns public relations department.

The Browns previously laid off two members of their PR department, Ken Mather and Amy Palcic.

Someone around here *Toad maybe?* said Barton is like Andra Davis. If that's true, I want no part of him.

Bowens, on the other hand, I would really like to see here. Good pass rusher, good ST'er, good football player.

Dave Hutchinson, of The Star-Ledger, reports Cincinnati Bengals WR Laveranues Coles is guaranteed $9.75 million in the 2009 season as part of his four-year, $27.5 million deal with the team. Coles received a $3 million signing bonus a $4.7 million roster bonus, a $1.9 million base salary and a $100,000 workout bonus all in 2009. He will earn base salaries of $4.6 million in 2010, $6.4 million in 2011 and $6.4 million in 2012. He gets a $100,000 workout bonus each year as well.

I keep saying this...Jets run a 34 too, they let him go and upgraded with B.Scott...Barton is as 1dimensional as Davis, maybe slightly more reliable...he´s a stopgap that wants his last big payday = he will be overpayed for what he brings. I understand 1 of Barton or Bowens but not both since it would shut the door (at least for 2009) on B.Bell

Close man

I said Barton is better than Davis at this point in his career, and that he'd be a good stopgap player while we spend our draft picks on more desperate needs.

It's just a matter of time before he's a Brown. This one seemed like a lock the second we signed 'Gini.

Because of circumstances (most certainly not because of choice) I watch the Dolphins more than any other team besides the Browns. Because of that, I'm familiar with Bowens.

He's a part-time player now who's got some rush ability in passing situations. Sadly, at this point in his career, he'd be locked in as our starting OLB or DE in obvious passing situations. That's how pathetic our rush ability is from the outside.

yes, similar to AD in regards to being a veteran and not a super star.

But he appears to be an upgrade and viewed in a much different light than what AD was viewed here. Both were considered leaders but Barton led on the field where AD did not.

Over pay??? more than likely but not in the big bucks area anyways. Pobably close to what AD was going to get paid before we tore up that contract last year.

JMHO.

Quit your crying. It's not our fault that you're too cheap to buy a giant flat screen tv so you have to watch the games with your buddy,

I'm with you on stop gap players. We have just added one at CB, signed a quality backup at safety (although right now he is a starter) and bring in a decent starter at ILB would be huge. We can give Williams and Bell a chance to improve and be evaluated by Mangini. We will need to find a starting OLB and safety on defense from the draft. We need receivers and a RB on offense. I am ok with Lewis for another year so I think we should be looking RB in the 4th. First two rounds we need to be looking at OLB, Safety, Receiver and OL. We don't really need a new OL starter this year but we will next.

HEY!

I'm not too cheap to buy a giant TV. I have one.

I'm too cheap to buy the NFL ticket when I can go over there, tear up his house, drink his beer, and have his wife cook dinner If the price of doing business is watching a Dolphins game, meh, I can live with that

I'm confused about the realities and perception of our WR's. I can't envision any one person being content with Stallworth again. JJ? He can't possibly be viewed as a starter. We'd be lucky to get part-time production out of him on 3rd down. Then there's the biggest head-case in the NFL in Edwards, the only player who can say he's had the most drops in the NFL over the past three seasons.

We need a receiver. We need one badly.

"We need a receiver. We need one badly."

Hey come on we just signed Steptoe! ITs done

seriously I hope you all can go to the draft forum thread about WRs...I left a link to a very educational bit about what I view and covet as a WR. It could be one of the best moves if we Steal him in the 6th but a very, very good move if we take him in the 4th It is a solution if you ask me!

Thanks I totally forgot about him.

Of course who knows how he will develop??? He has potential. Did we get a WR coach yet? Is that the only vacancy?

Cleveland Browns becoming the Cleveland Jets under Eric Mangini's direction
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Tuesday March 10, 2009, 10:56 AM

Associated Press photos
Since taking over as head coach of the Browns, Eric Mangini has been leading a lot of his former Jets to Cleveland. But so far there have been no sightings of Joe Namath, below.
Updated at 12:44 p.m.
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Jets?

To Eric Mangini, it has a nice ring to it.

In his first two months on the job, the Browns coach has:
* Hired former Jets coaches Brian Daboll (offensive coordinator), Brad Seely (special teams), Bryan Cox (defensive line), Andy Dickerson (defensive quality control), Jerome Henderson (defensive backs) and Rick Lyle (strength and conditioning).

* Signed ex-Jets backup defensive lineman C.J. Mosley.

* Signed ex-Jets backup cornerback Hank Poteat.

* Added Erin O'Brien, his former assistant with the Jets, as director of team operations.

* Added Dawn Aponte, a former Jets salary cap administrator, as vice president of football administration.

Who's next?

The Browns have hosted safety Abram Elam, the former Kent State player who has lost three siblings to shootings on the crime-ravaged streets of Riviera Beach, Fla. Elam is a restricted free agent, but was not drafted so it would not require any draft-choice compensation if the Jets don't re-sign him.

There are also a pair of Jets linebackers, David Bowens and Eric Barton, who are unrestricted and have visited and negotiated with the Browns.

After that?

There is no truth to the rumor that Joe Namath has been seen at the Browns' facility.

When owner Randy Lerner hired General Manager George Kokinis after already naming Mangini head coach, there was a lot of talk about exactly who would be calling the shots.

In order to leave the Baltimore Ravens, Kokinis was given the contract language of having final say on the team's football operations. That language must have been printed in pencil.

The irony of loading his team with former Jets is this: In Mangini's three seasons as Jets head coach, he was 0-2 against the Browns and 1-0 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

If he can maintain that unblemished record, Browns fans probably wouldn't care if he changed their beloved uniforms to green.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Geez Tony, I didn't know signing depth guys who fit a system that the coach is familiar with is such a bad thing!

Could it be that Coach Mangini AND Kokinis are on the same page?

Imagine if we DO sign Elam, Barton AND Bowens. Yes, they're all depth...how much better is that depth than the guys we currently have? These guys can start in a pinch and have played relatively well when they have. And they won't cost tons of cap room.

Well guess what? We haven't even gotten to the DRAFT yet! Suddenly we're not FORCED to pick a need. We have the option of drafting OL, ILB, OLB, CB, Safety, etc...but we don't HAVE to pick one.

We were adding talent in previous offseasons, now we're building a TEAM. It's plain as day to me and I can't figure out why so many people are up in arms about it. Plus, it's plain as day to me that Coach was doing some good things in New York and the rug was pulled out from under him before he had a chance to fulfill his vision...so why not build upon that here?

We're using the draft to find our starters and build our depth further...so we're not forced to throw rookies to the wolves...they'll have a chance to mature like so many Steelers and Ravens have.

...and here's hoping some of our previous draft picks will suddenly emerge and surprise us! (Alex Hall, I'm looking at you since Rob Ryan likes you)

If there's one thing I'm learning more and more every year, it's the teams that make the unspectacular signings in FA that are the most successful.

As for being 1-0 against the Steelers...here's hoping Coach Mangini builds upon that...I imagine him giving Mike Tomlin the Belichick scowl from the sidelines and I get chills.

What I don't understand is, why would all of these people even be willing to follow him here if he is such an overbearing A-hole?

First all of the sportswriters were clamouring about his lack of people skills and how nobody liked him...

Now they are complaining that so many of the people that used to work for him are willing to come work for him again...

They need to make up their mind.

Tell me Tony the Tiger how the team is loaded with Jets...no starters just depth..and even if Barton comes and starts , we basically all knew this so it's not a shock...former coaches usually try to bring in guys they are familar with unless there's better talent at those spots.

This seems like nothing more than a childish attack article by grossi. Perhaps his 'source' was let go a few weeks ago, or he was turned down for an exclusive interview since these guys wanted to get up to speed on the current players on the team. Sure part of their job is to talk to the media, and thus us the fans, but grossi attacks them in this article and insults the fans intelligence with drivel like this.

Just another reason why I cannot take anything the plain dealer writers (most, if not all of them) say seriously.

Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital.

I certainly don't expect every writer and fan to just jump on the bandwagon and blindly support the new coaches, etc. I know I'm in the "wait and see" crowd. I'm not saying Mangini is the savior, but I'm also not saying he's the devil.

That being said, it's really annoying reading things from guys like Grossi and Todd Porter that just bash bash bash and really don't make a whole lot of sense.

I mean, did Mangini and/or Kokinis sleep with these guys' wives or something?

Yeesh!

pats signed le-high bodden to a 1 year at the vet min of 750k

Quote:

The Patriots and veteran CB Leigh Bodden have agreed to a one-year contract for the veteran minimum of $750,000, a league source told NFL.com’s Vic Carucci.

Bodden spent the 2008 season with the Lions after being traded from the Browns for DT Shaun Rogers. Bodden managed just one interception and was released by the Lions after the season. Rogers, meanwhile, turned in a Pro Bowl season with the Browns after making 76 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

Bodden is the second cornerback to join the Patriots in the last week. Shawn Springs came to New England over the weekend after signing a three-year contract that could be worth up to $13 million with incentives.

When Browns coach Eric Mangini isn’t signing unrestricted free agents who played for him with the Jets, Mangini is courting New York’s restricted free agents.

Per a league source, defensive back Abram Elam has signed a one-year, $1.5 million offer sheet with the Browns.

Elam, an undrafted free agent in 2006, was tendered at the lowest level — one year, $1.01 million. The Jets have a right of first refusal. But since Elam wasn’t drafted, the Jets will receive no compensation if they opt not to match.

The Jets will have seven days to decide whether to meet the offer and keep Elam.

I wouldnt mind this signing. Guess they want him here then sign vet after camps start.

The rest are backups, no doubt.

Poteat.... I don't even know what to say about that one. It's like we get one every year.... Poteat, Cousins, Mickens. Actually, for as damn small Mickens was, he was better than Cousins as a nickel. Poteat IMO is garbage.

Bodden signed for $750,000. I'd take him in a heartbeat with his papier mache ankles for money like that, not that I'd expect him to come. Probably about what we're paying Poteat, who'll be getting smoked like a blunt come Sundays.

The Broncos on Friday added offensive lineman Scott Young to their roster, signing the free-agent guard to a contract, the team said.

Young, a fifth-year pro who played last season with Cleveland and Philadelphia, has played in 14 career games and never started.

The 6-foot-4, 312 pounds lineman entered the NFL in 2005, as a fifth-round draft choice of the Eagles.

Young played collegiately at Brigham Young for two seasons. He didn't start as an offensive lineman until his senior season, when he switched from defensive line.

The Baltimore Ravens have informed cornerback Samari Rolle that he will be released, a source confirmed on Friday.

Samari keeps on Rolle-in

John Harbaugh talks about how he admires CB Samari Rolle as a man, as well as his physical and mental touhgness on the field.

Rolle, who was scheduled to make $4.1 million this season, had previously requested to be released. On Friday, he was informed by the Ravens that he will be placed on waivers within the next few days.

1. Because Daven in an average DB,
2. Daven might not be fully recovered from his injury.
3. Daven might be asking for too much money or a long term deal.

My .02 I hope we can upgrade from Daven and not need him.
