The Cleveland Browns announced on Monday night that the team signed eight-year veteran cornerback Hank Poteat as an unrestricted free agent from the New York Jets.

"Hank is a veteran corner who has played inside and outside," said Browns General Manager George Kokinis. "His versatility and knowledge of the system will be an asset to our secondary."

The 31-year-old Poteat originally was a third-round draft choice of Pittsburgh in 2000 and went on to play three seasons with the Steelers (2000-02). He subsequently had stints with Tampa Bay (2003), New England (2005-06) and the Jets (2006-08). In his career, the 5-10, 195-pounder has played in 94 regular season games, including 18 starts. He has collected four interceptions, including two each of the last two years. In 2008, he also registered a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Hank freakin' Poteat?

Come on, he isn't much better than Cousins, if at all.

When are we going to sign someone that can actually start? I guess when they sign their rookie contract in July....

Imo,Poteat brings some veteranship to our young DB's. No way will he start but he gives us some much needed depth and can help in the nickle or if someone went down.. I didn't see what we gave him money wise but if we got him cheap it wasn't that bad of a move- imo.

In other news, the Browns front office changed out the toilet paper dispensers in the bathrooms at team headquarters... They replaced the old manual dispensers with new motion activated electric ones.

"WHAT!?!?! ELECTRIC TOILET PAPER DISPENSERS?!?!
WHAT A HORRIBLE DECISION!!!!"

On the outside? He's probably better.
If we tried him inside covering the slot, he's probably worse.

There is a reason he only hung for 3 seasons in Pittsburg... we (Couch & Holcomb) toasted him like marshmallows.

This is NOT a starting CB.

His nickname was Toast ......

I doubt that he's gotten better over the years .....

However .... since he'll be covering slot guys as opposed to starting WRs .... who knows?

Veteran leadership...... that's about all he brings. That and touchdowns.

And not the ones we want.

Crappy signing. Hell, just bring Bodden back if this is our alternative.

More depth is always good.

These are the kinds of moves we wouldn't make under Savage, and if we did, they'd be terrible.

Savage had no clue how to build the back end of the roster.

Depth is fine, but there's holes in our starting defense as well. I'd hate to rely on rookies to fill them, and a back up starting for no other reason than he's the best we have won't cut it.

One thing I DO like about Kokinis/Mangini so far is they aren't throwing money around like a couple of virgins in a strip club.

Just wish they'd have at least looked at someone who could start. I thought Poteat was garbage in Pittsburgh when we had guys like Quincy "Stonehands" Morgan and Dropcutt out there.

I agree we need to build the back end of our roster.. Or maybe i'm just happy that we finally signed someone in the last week or so, Man it was getting so boring that i would of jumped for joy if they signed Big Dawg and Dawg Pound Mike to one year deals.

*LOL* .... how in the hell would U know ... he was always busy with the front end of the roster .. I mean just go through and look at our starters ...

Braby/Joe/Donte ... ALL OPIE ...

Hieden/Royal/Rucker .... 1/3rd for each

Thomas - Opie
Stieny - Opie ..
Fraly - Opie ..
Tucker - bOtch .. Hadnot/Mckinnie - Opie
Shaff - Opie ....

Lewis/Harrison - Opie ..
BQ - Opie ..

Rogers/Smith/Smith/Williams - Opie ..
Wright/McDonald/Holley - Opie ..
Kam/DQ.Bell/Williams - Opie ...
Pool/ who the hell knows - Opie and Coke ..

now granted some of these guys need replaced .. but the MAJORITY OF THEM will be hear and starting next year ... now compare that to when Opie first took over .. we finally have LEGITE NFL PLAYERS ALL OVER OUR ROSTER .. when Opie got here we had 2 or 3 EVEN AVERAGE PLAYERS ...

HE HAD NO THOMAS/STIENY or even Fraley or Shaff .. the best and OLNY NFL CALIBER OLMAN we had when Opie took over was Tuck and he was playing out of position ...

He had ... who in the hell was our RB when he came here .. lee Suggs or Ben Gay .. *L* ..

At QB we LITERALLY HAD NO ONE ... and i mean that LITERALLY . we did not have one QB signed when he got here ....

our WR's needed upgraded to get to PITIFUL ....

and the D he was left was AMAZINGLY ENOUGH WORSE than the O he inherieted by a few miles ..

U got alot of guts and have no clue if u wanna rip Opie for not paying attention to the back end of the roster .. he had other things to worry about ... like getting a FEW NFL CALIBER PLAYERS ANYWHERE ...

I mean this signing here should pretty put things into proper persepctive for those with a clue ... ... Poteat STINKS .. he SUCKS ASS ... but he will be a nickle or dime back .. when Opie got here we had to sign Jason Fisk to START AT NT ... and Poteat looks like Deon Sanders in coverage compared to how Jason Fish played NT .. that oughta sum it up for ya ...

back end of the roster .. *LOL* .. hell Poteat may have been our best DB when Opie got here ..

REMARKABLE .... absolutely remarkable ...

Thank you for basically backing up my point.

I'll never say Savage didn't know how to sign front-end players or draft them, because he did.

But as a GM you have to constantly scour the waiver wire to see who can help you in the back-end. That's something I honestly believe Savage struggled at...and if you look at the roster, it's true!

And I like the signing merely for depth purposes. I still hope we add someone else in the draft.

Still wrong Ammo...Holly, Dinkins, McKinney, Sorensen, Adams, Wright and last but not least DA...all decent waiver wire or depth FA signs, don“t you think?

Oh and surprise, ManKok is interested in another Jet:

Mangini poaching Gang Green to fix Browns
March 9, 2009

Eric Mangini continues to pick through the Jets' cupboard. Today, the Browns hosted two Jets free agents - S Abram Elam and CB Hank Poteat, according to a league source.

Elam is a restricted free agent, but means the Jets have the right of first refusal. Because Elam was an undrafted free agent out of college and because he received the lowest tender possible ($1.01 million), the Jets aren't entitled to any draft-pick compensation if he goes elsewhere.

Elam was a clutch performer last season, making several big plays (just ask J.P. Losman), but he became a spare part when Rex Ryan signed former Ravens S Jim Leonhard to a three-year, $5.875 million contract.

Poteat is an unrestricted free agent, an extra DB who has survived in the league because of Mangini's affinity toward him.

To summarize, Mangini has signed one former Jet (DE C.J. Mosley) and is showing interest in four others - Elam, Poteat and LBs Eric Barton and David Bowens.
***

Bart Scott is one wealthy dude.

The official numbers on his 6-year, $48 million contract are in and, in the first two seasons, he will make $21.85 million - a $3.5 million signing bonus, a $4.5 million base salary in 2009 (fully guaranteed), a $10 million option bonus in 2010 and a $3.85 million base in 2010 (fully guaranteed).

For the first two years, he'll be getting quarterback money, which probably will cause some consternation among the 60 team employees that are being forced to take two weeks of unpaid leave.
***

One other contract note: PK Jay Feely signed a one-year, $1.45 million contract - fully guaranteed. It's always a slippery slope when you guarantee a kicker's salary because he's virtually uncuttable.

UPDATE: Poteat has, in fact, signed a contract with the Browns, the team announced tonight.

Depth and fits the system.

I wonder about the health of Daven Holly right now.

Not to totally defend Savage, but the players he brought in, front and back end have made us a more competitive team and any 'rebuilding' that may take place shouldn't have to be too severe to be a 50+ man replacement.

I think Savage did a pretty good job on the back end of the roster. Sure he didn't sign or draft all the players some people wanted, but he did give us (in no particular order) Davon Holly, Kris Griffin, Leon Williams, Jerome Harrison, Mike Adams, Nick Sorenson, Issac Sowels, Lennie Friedman, Seth McKinney, Louis Leonard, Jason Wright Alex Hall (too soon to tell really), and Josh Cribbs. Not that most are heavily sought after in FA or the phones are ringing off the hook for trades, however they filled in a role and most did an adequate enough job at a reasonable price for what they were brought in to do.

As to Poteat, a depth signing that brings veteran knowledge and should be helpful. He is much better than Cousins (a Savage fa who got old fast), the current team (Mangini/Kokinis) saw this and cut him a few weeks ago. I would still like to see us bring in a sub-28 CB and/or resign Holly.

Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital.

Abram Elam went to Kent State, apparently.

Looks like he had a pretty decent season last year. http://www.newyorkjets.com/team/player/stats/1298-abram-elam

I think the most important part of this story is that we hosted Abram Elam. If we sign him, he could be the guy who will be playing alongside Brodney Pool.

He can continue to poach from the Jets if he brings Barton over with him.

Him and Barton would be solid additions. Barton is ever so slightly better than Andra Davis, but I'll take upgrades anyway I can get them if we haven't even gotten to the draft yet.

And we still haven't gotten to the draft yet.

I'm all about the depth of this roster this year, and by the looks of it, ManKok are too.

Define "competitive" ......

2004: 4-12 ... 276 points scored/379 against
2008: 4-12 ... 232 points scored/350 against

I'm just saying ......

Both teams had injuries, ("Evel" Kellen Winslow) both went deep at the QB position (remember "Use the Force" Luke McCown starting 4 games?) and both teams lost .... badly .... a lot.

That was a "rebuild" ... and this one might or might not be ...... but certainly very, very few of the guys on last years team covered themselves in glory, and none but those very few should feel secure in their employment.
