This is the Browns Defensive Roster as of 3-9-09. Not counting the free agents. The numbers in parentheses is how many years theve been in the nfl.as of last year.....
DB'S
CB- E.Wright(2)-Starter
CB- B. Mcdonald(2)-Starter
CB- G. Lawson(R)-Backup
SS- B. Pool(4)-Starter
FS- M Adams(5)-Starter
SS- N. Sorenson(8)-Backup
SS- H. Abdullah(4)-Pratice Sq.Backup. Cut
-Outlook- Wright and Mcdonald are entering there 3rd pro season. Both are young with not much exp. Wright has had some injury problems and often gets beat on man to man coverage. Mcdonald is starting to show he can be an everyday corner at this level but still unexperienced..---Needs--- A veteran has to be brought in to give this team depth at CB.or even vie for a starting job. Resigning Daven Holley is a very good option here. He brings depth and knows the players.( But is coming off major injury) Also picking up a F.A wouldn't be a bad move as well, Browns are interested in Karl Paymah from denver to help there depleted secondary. Gerald lawson is not a valuable backup in my mind and the draft will not be a quick fix.
--- Brodney Pool moves over to SS for the departed Sean Jones. Mike Adams moves to FS and Nick Sorenson is the only reliable backup. Would we mind if Adams and Pool was are starting safetys, probably not if we can get more then 17 sacks that we had last year.. But i still think we need to bring in a quality vet in this situation. Adams has been mostly used as a back up in his carrer and that Abbdullah guy is probably pratice squad material but i don't know much about him at this time. James Butler from the giants has been rumored of coming in and that would help alot, he could start next to pool at SS. A safety should be a pick the browns should use in this years draft preferably in the early rounds. To help us with the depth that we need.

LB's
OLB- K. Wimbley(3)-Starter
ILB- D.Jackson(3)-Starter
ILB- L.Williams(3)-Starter
OLB- A.Hall(R)-Starter
ILB- B.Bell(R)-Backup
OLB- D. Holloway(1)- Pratice Sq. Backup.Cut
LB-T. Brown(R)-P.S. Backup.Cut
-Outlook- Wimbley and Jackson are valuable starters, and Leon Willams is a decent backup. Alex Hall is a good pass rusher but is iffy against the run. B. Bell was injuried most of his rookie year and hasn't shown what he can do. He does however have decent speed for an ILB in our 3-4 and could be used in some situations. Holloway and Brown are pratice squad material.---Needs---
Again we need a free agent veteran to come in and help immediatly. Bowens from the jets is rumored to be close to signing and could come in and start opposit Wimbley as OLB. Paris Lenon of detroit and Eric Barton of the jets are also on cleveland's radar to compete for the ILB job and or much needed Depth.( Mcginest or Griffin Could be resigned for the right money). Also this could be the position that the browns pick first in round 1. Aaron Curry at ILB or Brian Orakpo De/OLB could come in and help immediately.

DL'S
DE-R.Smith(9)-Starter
DT-S.Rogers(8)-Starter
DE-C.Willaims(5)-Starter
DT/DE-S.Smith(5)-Backup
DE-C.Mosley(4)-Backup
DT-L.Leonard(2)-Backup
DT-A.Rubin(R)-Backup
DE-M.Purcell(1)-P.S.Backup.Cut
DE-S. Thomas(2)-P.S.Backup.Cut
-Outlook- Shaun Rogers is a beast and a pro bowler. But did have an offseason issue. Robaire Smith is a veteran with decent skills and Corey Williams is getting paid but not living up to his potential(which i think he will) Shaun Smith has shown spurts off goodness and is a relaible backup at end or tackle. CJ Mosley Comes in from the jets to give us more depth and rotation on the line and Leonard and Rubin could help with that as well. Purcell and Thomas could vie for a spot on the 53. All in all i think were allright with the DL situation, Thats if Rogers doesn't let the misshap in the offseason affect his play and Williams plays up to his potential. we should be fine.( We Have more needs then DL) Maybe Draft a DL in the later rounds, to compete in training camp. But ya never know whats up the front offices sleeve, we could trade or release one and end up drafting a DL in the first couple of rounds... Stay Tuned

I'm extremely disappointed that they haven't signed Holley yet. IMO he was the 3rd or 4th best FA available at the position.

I'm not sure if any of those guys are starters with the exception of D'Qwell. Wimbley isn't quite as bad as people say he is, but I sure wouldn't be upset if an upgrade was found.

Wow, that linebacker group is scaring me. And it's not from intimidation.

Does anyone know if we officially signed Bowens yet?

I know we talked to Barton, who while not thrilling, I'd take for a decent fill in.

you had a good run Hank.

I agree with ya, but if the season started today this is all we got.. I put starters by some of them because they would probably start if we don't upgrade via fa, draft, etc. Im not saying that all of them are starters by all means.

Oh I understood ya Kaz. Those would probably be the projected starters. I just hope they all aren't come September. We need to upgrade 2 spots badly.

R. Smith at DE has got to be a huge ???? That would move S Smith into the starting lineup??
I wonder if Bell will materialize, or be a special teamer? Leon at ILB scares the heck out of me, not good.
CB are really thin- even with Hank signing. Need a safety.

We could draft all defensive players, and still have holes on the D that need to be addressed.

I would like to make two notes.

Holly - had a pretty severe knee injury and his quality should not be considered to be the same as before the injury. And if he gets it back to equal quality it won't be this year.

Robaire Smith - I know he had an Achilles Tendon injury. By most accounts by board members it was a complete Rupture. If that is the case it could be the end of the road for Robaire. I'm not sure if we will carry more than 6 DLmen on our Roster.
Right now we might go with the youth and let the never to be the same Veteran go come CUT DAY. In my eyes the front runners are Mosely, Rogers, Williams starters. ShaunS, Rubin and Leonard as the backups.

Robaire who I liked A LOT will have to prove that he hasn't lost a step...I cannot remember a Ruptured Achilles Tendon player coming back to normal.

I don't see Daniels on that list for CB? I forgot about Lawson - I liked him, he has potential and good speed.

I'm not disappointed because although the thread title calls it an active roster it is in fact March.....and there is no reason to get excited about the roster in March.

Very true shep. I bet are roster has looked this depleted before in march. I just never really checked until this year for some reason. I guess im pretty bored being laid off of work, so i figured i would go over it for us..

This sucks. I hope he doesn't sign and mangini and kokinis can get a feel of what hes looking for money wise and year wise..Or what other teams may offer him.
