Remember how many years we begged to get Orlando? Would he be good for a year or two?
Rams Release Pace Tuesday, March 10, 2009
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Nick Wagoner Senior Writer
After 12 seasons as one of the foundations of the Rams, the team parted ways with left tackle Orlando Pace on Tuesday afternoon as Pace was given his release.
The move comes as little surprise as the Rams continue in their efforts to clear up space under the salary cap to continue their roster makeover.
After it became clear that attempts to re-structure Pace’s contract were not going to work, the Rams set on course to find a trade partner. Failing that, the team settled on releasing him Tuesday afternoon in a difficult decision.
“I can’t begin to thank Orlando for all he has meant to the Rams organization, since we selected him with the first overall pick in the 1997 draft,” Rams Owner/Chairman Chip Rosenbloom said in a statement. “It is never easy to end a relationship that has had as much success as ours, but in the best interest of Orlando and the Rams, we feel now is the right time. As a Super Bowl Champion and seven-time Pro Bowler, he has been a true professional and will always go down as one of the finest Rams of all time. We wish him, Carla and their children the very best as they move onto the next chapter of their football journey.”
Removing Pace from the equation will save the team just shy of $6 million in salary cap space this season, essentially enough to sign its entire draft class.
In his dozen years with the team, Pace was one of the NFL’s premiere offensive tackles, going to seven Pro Bowls.
The Rams traded up to get Pace in the 1997 NFL Draft, using the No. 1 overall pick to grab him out of Ohio State. From that day, Pace became a cornerstone of the Rams’ franchise when he was plugged in at left tackle, a spot he did not vacate aside from injury in his time with the Rams.
“Orlando Pace has been a mainstay on the Rams’ offensive line since he was drafted in 1997, and has proven to be one of the most efficient offensive tackles throughout his career,” General Manager Billy Devaney said. “We thank him for all that he has done for the St. Louis Rams and we wish him the best for the remainder of his career.”
Included in that stay were two Super Bowl appearances and a Super Bowl victory in which Pace served as the chief protector for the “Greatest Show on Turf.”
Along the way, Pace played in 158 games with 154 career starts. Of course, Pace suffered a pair of season-ending injuries in 2006 and 2007 that limited him to nine games in those two years.
Pace bounced back in 2008, playing in 14 contests. At 33, Pace had three years left on his contract with the Rams.

Enough in the tank for what? To waste a roster spot????
For what??? I have seen posts clamoring for this player since before you were in junior high........all you know is his position and that he was a Buckeye who has been a name player and you feel that given all of that he will magically contribute with that orange helmet squozed down on his fat head.....GUESS WHAT? HE WONT!
He's old and washed up that is why he is available....you cannot fill a team with also-rans.
Now go throw up again........

I know he isn't able to stay healthy enough to start for a full season anymore but i wonder if at this stage he'd be willing to play for the vet minimum plus incentives (based on playing time) to be the backup swing tackle.

Your son used to hang out with orlando, and still does? Man what i wouldn't give to hangout with him, that would be sweet. All i would talk about is football probably bore him to death. But it would be cool...

WOW!!! I see the children took over the thread! Ya know what?... he was the best there was. period. He made the salaries and bonuses that every left tackle now enjoys. He's 33 years old and in my estimation still has some in the tank. How bout right tackle? How bout being a mentor to Thomas while still playing? I think he would sign for the Browns for not much money, because of his release and guaranteed money from the Rams. How long did Roaf play? 18 years if memory serves. Pace wasn't cut because of lack of ability, he was cut because he would not restructure his contract. I have to think he would contribute more than Bentley did. Come on home, Orlando!

IMHO....We would be dumb not to at least bring him in for a look and than IF we determine he is still worth something , a offer should be made....IF he is clearly out of gas we are not obligated to sign him....

You have to wonder if his body will hold up with the pounding it took in college and in the pros. I'd rather draft OLine this year.

Pace's release has me thinking more in terms of the draft..the Rams have to be targeting a OT..probably either Jason or Andre Smith...this is going to get interesting.

He's not going to change positions in the twilight of his career, not when he can command a nice salary as a left tackle.
Thomas doesn't need a "mentor." He's entering his 3rd year. He's a veteran. He knows what to do.
Quote:

There is no guaranteed money after the signing bonus. He's received the last dollar from the Rams that he will ever get.
As for taking less money to come here, that's a falacy. He'll go somewhere where he can start at left tackle for the most money, not somewhere where he'll be forced to switch positions for less.
Quote:
Pace wasn't cut because of lack of ability, he was cut because he would not restructure his contract.
Pace was cut because he'd missed about half of '07 and all of '06. He's also a declining player making big money on a rebuilding team. At 33, he's no longer one of the best left tackles in the league. He's still good, but not worth the medical risks and salary that the Rams would have assumed if they'd have kept him.
Quote:

Considering Bentley never played a down after he left the Saints, I'd say......ya think? *L*
There's no reason for this team to go after Pace. Not one.

Yes, but he hasn't lived up to the pre-combine hype, only the post-combine hype.
Before the combine, he was viewed as an athletically gifted prototype of a left tackle. After the combine, he was viewed as a lazy player who may not have the heart or desire to be great. To this point in his career, he's dissapointed, and appears destined to be a right tackle.

I just noticed this on www.KFFL.com. Take it for what it's worth, I guess. Rams | Bell to start at right tackle Wed, 11 Mar 2009 06:44:15 -0700 Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams OG Jacob Bell is expected to be the team's new starting right tackle. yeah, I question if that simply isn't a ploy to make people in the draft think they are not going after a OL...or maybe something else....but I doubt that there is much truth to that....If they put Barron at LT....they had better draft another QB too....cause Bulger is gonna be hurt.....

That doesn't make sense though. In the draft, you want to make people believe that you could draft anyone.
This is weird.

Wow is right. Anytime a "name" player is cut (and especially when it is a special football player who was a Buckeye as we all know they are the bestest football players ever) there are those that clamor for that player based upon past achievements as opposed to what good they will do our team. This is not Madden...this is real life.

He's already got his guaranteed money, that will not play into it all. You know not of what you speak.
Quote:

Your memory doesn't serve it sucks. Roaf played for 13 years.....up until (magically since he wasn't a Buckeye) he was 35 years old. Look it up, it's on the internet.
Quote:
Pace wasn't cut because of lack of ability, he was cut because he would not restructure his contract.
Actually he was cut because they saved 6 mill on the cap by cutting his dead weight since he can't get on the field every week anymore.
Just because a player has excelled at a position (and Pace has) does not mean it is wise to sign them and waste money and a roster spot based upon their past accolades.

Just remember Alex Hall is suppose to be our new starting OLB too.
Somebody has to move in there for their depth chart. The Draft will determine the actual movement. I agree with those that the RAMS basically committed themselves to OT with their #2 pick. These kffl announcements are from press releases trying in a lame attempt by the Rams FO to make people think that OT isn't their draft day target
JMHO - Pace loves the Browns...maybe he wouldn't mind retiring here as our RT??? One can dream...I'd rather have him at RT than Shaffer thats for sure.

Whats funny is that some posters are called retarded (name calling by using a polically incorrect term about the mentally handicapped ) and others are not.
the rams released him because they saved $6 million. Enough money to sign their rookies and use their other money they already had towards FAs.
At the right price, like Tucker making league minumum at less then $900,000, this would not be a retarded deal. Signing Pace at the same price, and not just because he played at OSU a long time ago, would allow Tucker to play RG. RG is a position that needs upgraded when Tucker wasnt healthy and the Browns dont have a starting RT on the roster.
Didnt Detroit have a tackle that played until he was close to 40 years old?
At $1 million, even if Pace can play only half the season, thats a very small percentage of a $124 million salary cap. That would be less the 1% of the cap. They need someone in there to hold down the fort until an upgrade can be had thru the draft or FA next year, and right now they dont have anyone. Not retarded

"I'd rather have him at RT than Shaffer thats for sure." Really? How many games is he going to be there? He's old,he's beat,he's injury prone, and he won't play for league minimum. At least Shaeffer answered the bell for every game.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

Yeah. It was Lomas Brown who played one year for us and as you may or may not recall shoved Jeff Triplett over the flag in the eye..........he played until he was 39 years old.
However, we are not talking about Lomas Brown or Willie Roaf.....we are talking about a guy who has missed more games in the last 3 years than he has answered the bell for.
It would be STUPID to waste a spot on him and nothing but a homer move.
