MANGINI MAKES A MOVE ON ELAM Posted by Mike Florio on March 10, 2009, 9:01 p.m. EDT When Browns coach Eric Mangini isn’t signing unrestricted free agents who played for him with the Jets, Mangini is courting New York’s restricted free agents. Per a league source, defensive back Abram Elam has signed a one-year, $1.5 million offer sheet with the Browns. Elam, an undrafted free agent in 2006, was tendered at the lowest level — one year, $1.01 million. The Jets have a right of first refusal. But since Elam wasn’t drafted, the Jets will receive no compensation if they opt not to match. The Jets will have seven days to decide whether to meet the offer and keep Elam. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/03/10/mangini-makes-a-move-on-elam/

He may be signed but we won't know if he's ours for another 7 days...

Right.
But the Jets signed Leonhard, so that helps our cause.

This is the first signing that i feel is camp fodder.
NOWAY he sticks around!!!!! He will be cut during training camp. If he makes the first round of cuts....i will be shocked.

If the Jets dont counter our offer, it looks like will add a decent strong safety that could possible start next to pool..He will also give us depth at the safety position for sure.. Heres a link with some info on him.. http://www.nfl.com/players/abramelam/profile?id=ELA528222

Want to put a beer on this deep south? By looking at our DB situation he will be an upgrade of what we have..

So deepsouth, it sounds like you know more about this guy than the blurb at the start of this thread. WHY wouldn't he start for us? Unless we draft someone HIGH, there is a 50/50 chance he starts opposite Pool. I seem to remember the NY Press saying Leonhard was only a mild upgrade from Elam, who really turned it on at the end of last year and had a chance to start this year if Rex Ryan wasn't doing to the Jets what Mangini is doing to the Browns

I think he not only makes the team, he probably starts at 1 of the safety spots.

My son is a a BIG Ravens fan so i got to watch every Raven game this year. And unless you want him to be your stud punt returner....you are getting a average at best safety in Leonhard. So if Leon-hard (thats funny) is a upgrade to Elam....HE aint starting material. If he lands a spot on this roster it will be a tough season in the secondary because we have NO talent what so ever. What so ever!!!!!!

LOL. allright a kool aid it is, Hawaiin tropical.. On the flip side im comparing Mike Adams and Abram Elam stats the last two years.. Adams played in 29 games-- 5 starts-- 73 tackles--- 1 sack---- 3 pass def.--- 2 int... Elam --29 games---- 17 starts---- 87 tackles--- 2 sacks--- 5 pas def.---- 1 int(for a td). Looks here by going by stats only that elam has more exp. the last two years.. IMO he is an upgrade over adams if in fact we get him..

I think he'll battle Pool and Adams for a starting spot and what ever combo of three works best will be the lineup.

Unless he can play FS, I'm guessing he'll be on the bench/ST. Pool is, IMO, a significantly better SS. Still, with Pool's concussion history, it'll be good to have a decent backup if the Pets don't match.

Did I miss something? Did the jets have an amazing d last year or did their coach get fired? This is rapidly approaching exactly the way we "rebuilt" when sav and rac got here. Does that mean we're 1 year from completely blowing up the roster?

Considering they were considered at one point to be one of the best teams in the AFC before Brett decided to suck, I would say it wouldn't hurt to take some talent from them.
you had a good run Hank.

Well their D was quite a bit better then ours. It ranked 16th in total yards to our 26th and had 41 sacks to our 17.

Who says that Kokinis isn't doing anything? Mangini's name gets tossed around in these articles, but that doesn't mean he's doing all this by himself.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Read where all are players are being signed from. I believe almost all are from the NY Jets.
I think that's the issue.
I will say this though, whoever Mangini has playing, he will get more out of the talent than Romeo could. He won two of three seasons with talent that IMO was inferior to ours often. I do get a chance to watch the Jets often and I don't mind Mangini

Add to that the fact that Kokinis was Director of Pro Personnel for the Ravens and was responsible for scouting opposition players. It would follow that Kokinis has knowledge of some of the available free agents that Mangini does not have, and still all we see being signed are former Jets. Looks to me like Mangini is running things.

So who's to say Mangini didn't talk with Kokinis, say "hey, I'm familiar with this guy and I think he'd be a good pickup", the two discuss it and reach the same conclusion that the guy should be signed?
I mean, who's to say Mangini didn't go to Kokinis and really talk up Coles, but Kokinis said "no way"?
Just because the guys are coming from the Jets doesn't say to me that Mangini is pulling the strings.

So Kokinis and Mangini are working together... what's wrong with Kokinis listening to his coaches evaluations of the team and some players he has prior experience coaching? I thought we wanted this type of collaberation between the coach and gm. Isn't it the gap between gm and coach that got us into trouble the last time. Savage cared little to what Crennel said? Everyone needs to relax and let these two work at least for a year before we throw them under the bus.

I'm relaxed. It just appears to me that the Coach is boss and the GM works for him. If it works, who cares? But it's not the model of how things usually work in the league, and I don't see any harm in mentioning that.

camp fodder?
The kid is young. Had some quality starts at Safety last year.
He's getting a one year show me contract which was surprising. 1.5 mil not much of a poison pill when the tender is 1.mil n change? The only factor is that they went and signed Leonhard so his tender might hold less value to them.
He's probably ahead of Adams in NFL skills but we will see.
I like the signing if we get him. It has us going into the draft with a solid base of Safeties...Pool, Adams, Elam and Sorenson. And any stud will come from the draft in the next two season.
JMHO - I really don't think we are giving a 1.5 guaranteed contract to Camp fodder

A quick scan of the interwebs reveals that most Jets fans would be rather upset to lose Elam.

Please tell me that you have a different reason for not liking Elam.
Leonard was a player for Rex Ryan, so it make sense that he is comfortable with him and wanted him to come over.
Elam was a player for Mangini, so it makes sense that he is comfortable with him and wanted him to come over.
Kokinis was pro-personel director for the Ravens, so he should also know how good Leonard is...and even better, he should know if he thinks Elam is better than Leonard. We did not pursue (or at least not as hard as NYJ) Leonard.
What your post says is that you trust the NYJ FO more than our FO.
From what I have seen of Elam (only 2 games last year where he played), he looked good. Enough that I made note of him. He is most definitely not camp fodder and will most likely take a starting S spot if the NYJ do not match.

I think it is a huge coincidence if Mangini isn't at least providing serious input... my guess is that Mangini said make a run at Coles and Koke said, "Not at that price."

But I'm not on board with the line of thinking that he is calling all the shots.

I dunno. That looks like a backup/special-teamer contract to me.
As for Leonhard, he also returns punts, which would take some of the load off of Washington while representing insurance.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

which is why I think it would be a good value. he and Adams could have a spirited battle in camp for the 2nd S spot.
