I'm sure Mangini is putting in serious input. Hell, I thought that was the idea.
But I'm not on board with the line of thinking that he is calling all the shots.
This is my thinking.. Mangini and Kokinis sit down and study who is out there in FA.... the top guys are gone so you are down to the others, they all look about the same.. so given that, you go after the ones you know. At least him bringing them here tells me they understand how the system will run, they understand what's expected, what level of discipline and all that and they are ok with it.. I mean if talent is roughly equal, why not go after the guy you know? If better talent is available, then I hope they aren't passing it up to get former Jets though...

j/c I don't understand all this talk about how Mangini is running the show. The problems between Phil and Romeo was that Romeo wanted certain players and coaches and Phil just picked who he wanted. Everybody on here threw a fit about that. Now that we appear to have a GM and Coach on the same page. The Coach is running the show and the GM just doing whatever he says.

havnt you figured it out yet that people just like to complain? i just wish the whiners and complainers would just go root for another team, i get tired of hearing them cry about every little move we make! just my two cents

Who's complaining? Noticing that that all your free agent signings are from the team that your new coach came from is complaining? Wondering whether your team has the NFL's iconic Owner > GM > Coach hierarchy is somehow disloyal? WTF is your problem?

We need depth. These guys are decent players who already know the system. How is that a bad thing. The Jets were a better team than the Browns last year, I don't see the problem. These guys can help our hold over players learn the new system. This is the first year of a new coaching staff, they have to get their system in place and having players that know it helps the transition.
Elam is an up and comer, that's what this team needs. Mangini coached him, so I would think he understands what he brings to the table.
Reading some of these posts crack me up. People act as if Mangini and Kokinis don't care if they win, and that they are actually trying to make the team worse. I would have to believe that any coach that chooses a player for his team expects them to help.
Chicken Little is alive and well in Cleveland.

First off I don't think any of these guys played for Rob Ryan last year who will be our coordinator. We will run a 3-4, but hopefully not the disciplined style the Jets and Browns ran...the two gap. I thought Rob wanted to implement more of what Rex ran in Baltimore which would be the One gap which relies more on flexibility. Needless to say the terminology and schemes will be different...so people that keep saying that stuff drive me nuts. They are good for depth, but they do not know the system or the terminology like we all think. They do know the 3-4 and what the concept is.. They will have to adjust just like everyone else, but they are familiar with Mangini as a coach. I am not upset with any of the signings, most if not all are depth pieces no studs which is fine by me. Build it through the draft. Obviously these are all high character guys that love the game and give their all, that is what he specified and he knows these guys better than we do.

"Mangini is actually being a little worse.."
How so? The pick up of Baxter cost how much? Savage tendered a one year deal for Taylor RB...3 mil I think.
We are tendering 1.5 mil at a higher inflation era.
How is it worse. Mosely isn't costing much and he's young. Elam wouldn't cost much and he's young. The LB we signed I believe played ILB and OLB for the Jets and had more Sacks than any of our OLBs and he was a pure backup.
(???not sure of that as a true stat - I could be mixing him up with another spot starter we were pursuing ??? so please prove me wrong if I am)
We are picking up 2nd tier acquisitions. Savage was paying top dollar.
I don't see mangini as worse.

www.KFFL.comJets | Match offer to Elam Tue, 17 Mar 2009 13:04:47 -0700 Erik Boland, of Newsday, reports the New York Jets have decided to match the Cleveland Browns' one-year, $1.5 million offer to restricted free-agent SS Abram Elam.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Don't suppose Brian Russell is floating around FA land.....
Pool and Adams isn;t exactly what I'd want as our last line of defence but so be it....
Here's hoping we pull a rabbit out of our hats on draft day.

Mike Brown is still a FA. I'm guessing he isn't gonna want much due to his injury problems.

Never quite understood why we got rid of Russell in the first place.

"I was not one that ever said he sucked"
If I would point a finger at ya I would have used the word "BUM"
How does it make him better than a day ago? ..not to me - I was getting excited that he hopefully could be a Brown. What it did was tell us that the Jets and new Head Coach Ryan actually sees value in Elam - similar to how the Ravens saw value in matching our one year offer of Taylor RB. In both cases it was a One year offer...the following year Taylor hit the FA market with no RFA matching ties and signed with the Vikings. We had Rueben Droughns who became our first 1,000 yard rusher in 20 years and didn't make a play for him.
Do you mean if anyone thought he SUCKED how would this make it a poor description of him? Why would a team who signed a FA Safety - go and match the one year offer we made? I would have to say we would have a good account of two people who might now him best wanting him. Thats got to give some props to the kid.
"he is a BUM as of right now .. he could move out of the BUM category ... but this kids done DIDDLY so far"
Sorry I fail to see any logic in this...I'll take my - TWO, HC signing him over your Bum of the month theory...lol

Dang, I wanted to get this kid. I hate the suspense of RFA! I guess if we're still in the market we can try to pick him up again next year.

Elam was kicked out of notre dame after being found guilty of sexual battery. There was a good debate on him a few years ago about picking him up as an undrafted.
