Browns release Jurevicius

The Browns announced on Wednesday evening that the club has released wide receiver Joe Jurevicius.

"These types of decisions are always difficult ones, especially with someone like Joe, who has meant a great deal to the Cleveland Browns organization and to the fans of Cleveland," said Browns General Manager George Kokinis. "Eric (Mangini) and I have had extensive conversations with Joe and his representatives. In the end we were unable to reach an agreement that was in the best interests of both parties. We want to thank Joe for his contributions to the Browns and wish him the best of luck in the future."

Jurevicius joined the Browns as an unrestricted free agent from Seattle in 2006. In his three years with Cleveland he caught 90 passes for 1,109 yards and six touchdowns. Overall in his 11 NFL campaigns, he has caught 323 passes for 4,119 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Stay tuned to ClevelandBrowns.com for more information.

Sad to see Joe go. But let's face it, Receivers like JJ can be found anywhere. We can find a JJ type receiver late in this draft.

These retards better have one hell of a plan in store for this team. Releasing JJ is one of the dumbest things they could have done. Might as well trade Thomas for a 7th rd pick.

Although I am not happy about this move, I understand why it happened.

Jurevicius is an aging player coming off a major injury. The Browns asked him to reduce his salary, but they couldn't come to an agreement.

The Rams just released Orlando Pace because of salary reasons. And he has done a lot more for them than Jurevicius did for the Browns. This just proves that no matter what you mean to a team or a fan base, if you are getting paid more than you are worth and don't renegotiate you will be cut.

I don't like this move. I'm not sure what Joe J's salary cap hit would have been this year, but it couldn't have been prohibitive. From all accounts, we were in good cap shape and the trade of Winslow only helped clear space.

I know we've made some signings, but I can't imagine they have made things tight. Wasn't this JJ's last year? I just don't see how having that guy in the locker room could have been anything but great for the team. Not to mention that we no longer have a single reliable pair of hands on the team.

Go Browns!!

How is this dumb?

Jurevicius is a 34 year old wide receiver coming off a major injury. He wouldn't take a pay cut, so they released him.

That's a bummer, but to be fair, we don't know the state of Joe's health, fitness, or even desire to play another year. There are a lot of variables here before we get out the torches and pitch forks. Would the reaction have been the same if Joe had announced his retirement??

Best of luck to Joe. You were a true warrior and it was enjoyable watching your style of play.

I guess this means Braylon will be staying another year. As for Mangini and Kokinis, hopefully they can find a solid replacement in the draft.

On the surface I can't say I care for this news. JJ was very valuable to this team two years ago and I'm not privy to anything that's happened since so I'll just say I hope it's the right move for the team.

Wellfirst off Its my opinion that this is dumb. Granted he was coming back from a major injury but why not keep him and see if he could still play. We all know he could catch. I got a bad feeling Hubbard is gonna be a starter.

Joe J was clutch, Top ... you won't find one like him in the 5th or 6th round. Plus, he was a local guy ... one of us. This team is thin at WR, and Joe would have been a real solidifying addition, if healthy. Don't go marginalizing him just because he's probably nearing the end of his career. He could have helped us this year.

True, but sad just the same.... one of the good guys... 34 years old, coming off serious knee injury, and he wouldnt take a pay cut... I don't like it, but I agree with it.

So this now leaves Edwards who can't catch a damn cold. Did they not see or know what happened to the receiving game when he was out!!?? This new staff is losing me very quickly.

So we have:

Edwards, Braylon
Stallworth, Donte
Cribbs, Joshua
Steptoe, Syndric
Hubbard, Paul
Leggett, Lance

I guess Cribbs will be our #2 now.. with Stallworth in the slot. No... Steptoe #2, and Stallworth in the slot...

Guess we will be running the ball a lot this season.

So we have Edwards who couldnt catch a cold. We have stallworthless. Superman Cribbs but mediocre WR and a bunch of guys who wouldnt make it on the practice squad of half the teams in the league. Wow I gues Mangenius really wants to run the ball with a aging RB thats on the downside of his career.

I am just saying, him being a local guy should have nothing to do with his release.

He was old, injured, and wouldn't take a pay cut. Those three things in the NFL mean you will be released. Don't blame this on our current GM/Coach combo, any other NFL team would have done the exact same thing.

well, besdies the fact that he was our only receiver that would go across the middle....and catch it.....has alot of experience, and a great leader.....other than that, I guess it was dumb.......I'm not sure about how much money he made....but I can tell you one thing....he was worth a hell of a lot more than Stallworth, so even if he was making $5 mill a year....I would have kept him and released Stallworth...all just my opinion.....I too am becoming a little frustrated with some of the moves that Mangini INC. has been making..... ....I saw a article today that was saying that Mangini wasn't too impressed with Quinn or Anderson....maybe we will be drafting a QB at #5......

This sums up my feelings.

I like Joe a lot. I think he was a GREAT 3rd down WR. The guy caught just about everything that came at him and gave 100% all the time. That's the kind of guy I want on my team.

But just because he tries hard and is from the Cleveland area doesn't mean we should just keep him indefinitely. He contributed, but his time has passed, IMO.

I love how upset people are. When it comes down to it, I want our FO and our coach to make decisions that lead us to winning. If that means getting rid of JJ, so be it. I don't want our FO and our coach making decisions just because the guy is a fan favorite.

Joe J. has family that works in Sysco Food Services. I have friends that work there and I have been fortunate to be able to meet Joe on a couple occasions. Trust me,this wasn't a shock to Joe.
He understands football is a business. Phyiscally he is fine..but the hard part of coming back is the mental part.
Joe told me "I rather get cut sooner than later,I don't want to have to endure getting myself ready to play and then just end up getting cut this summer.."

well... whats the upside here?

1) Hubbard has potential to be a solid WR.

2) We have two 2nd round picks... I personally didn't want to spend one on a WR, but Mangini keeps digging the hole deeper. Our initial needs were LB, RB, and O-line... Now we need those 3 positions, Safety and WR.

3) There will be Patrick Turner on Day 2 of the draft... He would replace Joe J. perfectly. Maybe they keep reading this board and they are listening to me. I know Savage did.

Sad to see him go. Joe was a great player for us the few years he played. I will miss seeing him in a Browns uniform. As much as I wish this hadn't happened, I understand the reasoning behind it.

Thanks for the years and the memories Joe. Despite the short time you spent with the Browns, you will forever be a Cleveland Browns in my mind.

I will say that I am a bit curious about why Stallworth is still on this team.

I believe that he has a roster bonus due yet in March. My guess is that we are trying to restructure his contract, but you might see him cut sometime soon.

Well there goes my Authentic Winslow and now JJ jersey. Basically the Browns cut/traded my 2 favorite Browns since Kosar, Sipe, Metcalf, and Clay Matthews.

This is sad day for me. Hate is a strong word, but that is how I feel towards this organization right now.

Christ, the overreactions here are crazy.

We're talking about a wide receiver who is coming off major knee surgery from a season in which was going to be his last. Some of you are acting like we just cut a 10 time pro bowl player.

I under stand why a lot of you are upset, because he was a Browns fan and a Browns player, but Joe, if he was going to play this year, wasn't going to be

A) A long term piece to the puzzle and

B) A major factor this year.

Again, take a chill pill and look at this from a wider point of view, and you'll see how much of an overreaction many of you are making.

Some people actually relate to the players who give a damn. Sure, your making a good point from a football standpoint, but from the human standpoint, many fans like ME will miss JJ and resent the fact he was released.

Wonderful. The comment wasn't specifically directed to you. I'm talking to the people who think this makes a massive impact on the on field product, because that's all that matters to me.

Just a side note:

There is a guy who plays for BYU that reminds me of that Pitt guy names Hines Ward... I watched his highlight video, and he simply out hustles the defense to make plays...

Name: Austin Collie
Also plays like a Wes Welker... Projected to go in round 5-6 (walterfootball.com)
