Thanks for your effort and contributions Joe. Best of Luck!

Sad to see the cut, but am not surprised at all. He had been asked to take a pay cut right? Tucker took it, Joe did not. I'm not sure what he had left health wise. Probably should have retired.

Christ, the overreactions here are crazy.

We're talking about a wide receiver who is coming off major knee surgery from a season in which was going to be his last. Some of you are acting like we just cut a 10 time pro bowl player.

I under stand why a lot of you are upset, because he was a Browns fan and a Browns player, but Joe, if he was going to play this year, wasn't going to be

A) A long term piece to the puzzle and

B) A major factor this year.

Again, take a chill pill and look at this from a wider point of view, and you'll see how much of an overreaction many of you are making.

Some people actually relate to the players who give a damn. Sure, your making a good point from a football standpoint, but from the human standpoint, many fans like ME will miss JJ and resent the fact he was released.

Wonderful. The comment wasn't specifically directed to you. I'm talking to the people who think this makes a massive impact on the on field product, because that's all that matters to me.

These guys could all be murders, I don't care. I want to win, and Joe is a replaceable asset.

Your comments stuck me as insensitive to the fact that many Browns Fans actually like JJ because he loves the Browns, plays hard, blocks like a man on a mission, and has excellent hands.

You said his onfield performance won't be missed, I beg to differ. JJ brought a lot of confidence the offense and provided the QB with a reliable possesion receiver. His leadership and 3rd down conversion ability will be SORELY missed next year. Your comment was not directed to me specifically, but I was one of the ones that thinks this was not a smart move by these Cleveland Browns.

So maybe I'm defending those that think this was not a solid move by an already faceless, and leaderless Cleveland Browns football team.

Nuff said on that though....

Nah, i wouldn't call it overreaction...just a lil "home-town" blues.

Coupla years ago we get two hometown boys who WANNA play for the Browns and one never sets foot on the field and the other gets hurt in a way that he has numerous operations to clear it up. We get a guy like Stallworth who I'm sure most of us wouldn't mind seeing hit by a bus...who we keep... and JJ who we let go for a lil of DS's money. I understand WHY we let him go, but to say he would not be an important part of this offense this year is just guessing. He was a very important part 2 years ago and I guess everyone remembers that...

Overreacting? No

Bummed as hell...Yes

You forgot to mention that he is 34 years and is coming off a season in which he didn't play one game because of a serious injury. Don't you think that would affect the way he played in the upcoming season? (If he made it on the field at all.)

Great...Yea, there is absolutely no room on this team for big receivers that are great in the locker room, go over the middle fearlessly, catch the ball, and block downfield every play and run good routes.. What a joke, sorry he didn't wear a Jets uniform for the last three years. I can see cutting Stallworth who does none of the above mentioned things and can't stay on the field in the first place and sucks when he is. I don't care if he is 40 he was an asset to this team and there is noone to replace what he brought to the table on this roster, in free agency, or in the draft. I am not saying he is the greatest receiver, but he did what he had to do and did it well. His presence alone will be missed, a true team player who loves the game and this city. I could understand if he was breaking the bank, but he isn't. Is this just about clearing room for another jet ....watch now...Coles? I don't like it.

If JJ says he's ready and will be productive, then I have to take his word for it. Would he be a different player, maybe. But I will bet you anything he would be more productive than Steptoe, Hubbard, and Leggett COMBINED for 2009.

I mean, it's clear you have some sort of goofy vendetta against Mangini and Kokinis, but have you not been paying attention to free agency at all?

If it felt cold, that's because it was. People need to understand that in the new NFL, players don't spend their whole career with one NFL team. That is why I have not rooted for a player, but rooted for a team because these new players don't value the fans, they value money. Now, personally, I may have liked Joe more than maybe some other players, because he was one of us, but I don't hear him crying, so I'm going to say he isn't totally blameless in this action.

As for his on field production, he was a valuable player when he was on the field. Unfortunately, he struggled to stay healthy, and while he played through pain a lot, he did miss a few games, not to mention him missing the whole season last year. At 34, coming off a major knee surgery and his unwillingness to take a pay cut...yeah, I would say it's a smart move, right move.

If you want to feel bummed, go ahead, but use an unbiased view to this move and you'll realize it was the right move.

Stallworth can't be cut because it would be too much of a cap hit, so he might be indirectly involved with Jurevicius being released.

Also, Coles signed with the Bengals. I heard Wayne Chrebet is available though.

I don't have a vendetta against Mangini and Kokiinis...who you talkin to? I have never said a negative thing about either until then, if you call that negative...I have been paying attention but I didn't think coles has signed yet...My mom just died Sunday night and I am just on here to keep my mind off of things, maybe I missed something..sorry.

Sorry for your loss, Loyal. I understand what you're going through and will keep you in my prayers.

As for Joe, he is one great guy. I've had the privelage of meeting him and talking to him on several occassions. He is everything that you would want in a player and a person.

However, Joe himself knew this time was coming. He was what the Browns have always been about, but he was also well past his prime. He had planned on retiring after last season, but decided to try to come back after being injured and playing one more. Let's not forget that he had seven (if I recall correctly) surgeries in the last several months on his knee.

The players that have been mentioned that Joe was better than have more upside long term than Joe does. Even he understands that and I'm sure understands the decision. It is sad, but it was also what was best for the team. I have tremendous respect for Joe, but everyone knew he was only planning on staying one more year. With all the questions about his knee and the change in the front office, this was almost a foregone conclusion.

You guys are killing me. I love Joe and all he stands for. He was a great atribute to the teamTWO years ago. I wonder if any of you realize how many surgeries he has had since then. Staff infested his knee and required more work. Saying what he could do when healthy means nothing now. One hit and he could be done again. The guy is not 20 years old. He has played hard and taken a beating for many years. I'm sure he understood the situation. God bless him and I hope he can still play, but IMO his time has come. He hasn't seen the field in two years, realistically he probably isn't the same player now. You guys need to let it go.

Acting as if he would have been a major cog in the offense is wishful thinking. Those calling Mangini and Kokinis stupid are fools. This team needs youth, not old beat up players no matter how much we like them. I personally would rather a young player with promise held that roster position.

Before he was hurt, remember, he wanted the team to bring in a guy to be the #2, because his body wasn't able to hold up. That was his request not the coaching staff. Guys with his passion always have a hard time walking away, but IMO, that's what Joe should do. I would hate to see him get hurt again and suffer for it later in life.

As much as I like him, this was a good move. Sometimes I wonder if some of these fans who are bashing Mangini and Kokinis right now even thought about what what Joe said after that season two years ago. Knee-jerk, is putting it lightly. Thinking that there is no other player on earth that can catch the ball over the middle is assinine. Everybody is replaceable.

Good luck Joe, we Browns fans are deeply grateful for all the hard work and selflessness you showed while here playing for your hometown team. Thank you and may good health be with you.

How's your Dad bro?? I hope all is well.

Joe is a great man, and was a credit to the Browns organization. With that said, this is a business, and if a restructured deal couldn't be met then business is business. Just guessing I would say that the Browns wanted Joe to take the vet minimum, and Joe figured all the pain and work it would take to come back just wasn't worth it for that money.

So what we have Braylon Edwards and ????? I'm not saying he was a #2 but as a #3 and a third down possession receiver he would have been more than qualified. It has only been a year since he has seen the field and the least they could have done is to bring him to camp and let him prove himself on the field. That's all. We knew he was retiring...but give him the chance on the field, who know's he might have come and said he couldn't play at the level he needed to and retired. He knows what it takes and if he thought he could contribute at the level he needs to, then let him. I don't remember any of you saying to release Winslow, who had a ton of knee operations and staph. JJ wasn't Winslow but each player has their own role. I understand, just disappointed and believe there were other ways of doing it. Maybe he wants to retire if he can't play for the Browns...did they give him that option as a coutesy? That's all. Thanks B's son for the thoughts and prayers and I wish you the same. I went to school with Joe and he is a good guy.

This team is thin at WR, and Joe would have been a real solidifying addition, if healthy. Don't go marginalizing him just because he's probably nearing the end of his career. He could have helped us this year.

Means something...kinda.

The loss of JJ dropped us from the worst WR unit in the NFL down to...the worst WR unit in the NFL.

Mark my words -- whether we pursue them or not...there will be JJ caliber receivers available after the post-draft cuts.

This loss hurts us...but only because we're so terrible at WR. If we've made upgrades come opening day...I won't complain.

I agree with you. I would guess that in combination with not wanting to go through camp and end up cut led to the decision.

Agreed.

So maybe instead of being mad at the organization, fans may want to question Joe for not taking less to stay.

Good guy, fading player, not likely worth what we were going to pay him. A healthy Joe was a good player for us, but he was far from healthy, even before the staph.

Smart move by the team, as it's always better to let a player go a tad early instead of a tad late.

If we're going to get mad at the new regime for letting "one of our own" go, maybe we should question the guy who didn't want to restructure his deal........

Do you think that this might be a ploy to make it look like we'd consider Crabtree at 5 to try to put a team in a position to want to trade up with us?

Look at it in context...if it was J.J. who took the lesser deal and Tuck who said no and got cut, the organization would be sailing along (and Tuck would be a jerk).

We'd better be putting some really important plans into effect with the money we're saving by cutting JJ now and not even letting him come to minicamps to show what he can do, especially when we're already so freaking far under the cap and doing nothing with it!

I'm disliking the hell out of this new FO more and more every day.

A ploy? Portland, regardless of the presence of Jurevicius or not, I'm a firm believer in Crabtree, and wouldn't be upset if we took him at 5. In fact, I'm in favor of Crab over Orakpo. So do I think this is a ploy? Nope. I think this is smart business. Remember, Tori Holt and Marvin Harrison are still out there. There are also some 2nd round receivers to be had.

Phil, EXACTLY.

It's damned hard seperating our hearts from our logic. Frankly, I'm encouraged at how many fans just in this thread actually acknowledged they were unhappy he got cut, but admitted they understood the move. When your only $20 million under the cap at the start of the free agency period, every million dollars counts. Joe J. and Tucker simply weren't worth gambling with considering how much they were slated to make between them. Tucker made the decision to stay, Joe didn't. That's where the story ends for me. Joe could have stayed just as Ryan chose to do. I don't hate Joe because he didn't elect to redo his deal. Why? Because business is business. It's not as though he was even a starting-caliber player anymore. He admitted that before last year, and now he's a year older, a year slower, and a year more damaged.

You're absolutely right: If the roles had been reversed, we'd be demonizing Tucker because he didn't want to stay. Maybe he'll see there isn't a market for him and he'll want to come back. Afterall, if he were a TRUE Brown, he'd want to, right? *L*

As much as I love Joe and want to see him finish up his career with one last year in Cleveland, there's no guarantee that he can go.

The guy just had 7 knee surgeries last year. S-E-V-E-N.

He was making quite a bit of money this year. Tucker took a pay cut, JJ didn't want to do it. I think a lot of people are sentimental on this because he IS a Browns fan, and want him to play. We really don't know if he can, and if he does, how long it will hold up.

Good luck to you Joe. Thanks for the memorable 2007 season.

Nobody panic.Slo Lerner, Man-genius and Koki-nuts have everything under control.
Don't forget they were all ball boys for the old Browns. You remember, the organization that actually scored a TD ( when you get the ball into the end zone the opponents are defending)once in awhile.
They know what they're doing.

Wow, we cut a guy, who supposedly is what EM and Kok have said they want. Character, leadership, toughness. For what? Cap space? To sign more trash heap players who will contribute nothing to this team?

If we are gonna cut someone, why not Stallworth, who is a total weenie and also totally unproductive. Since we arent going to use our cap space, who cares if we take an accelerated cap hit by cutting Donte?

When are we going to start filling what holes we can in FA instead of making more? Question answered, everyone that woulda made sense is gone.

I'm going to LMFAO @ our offense this season when we trot out Leon Steptoe and Cribbs as our 3-deep WRs and the Golden Boy at QB with Jamal at RB. Yeesh...we might score some FG against the Bengals, beyond that it's not looking good.

The Winslow trade I completely understood. Dumping JJ for nothing...is pure lunacy (and I say that knowing he is 34 and coming off 7 knee surgeries).

If you think any combination of Josh Cribbs, Syndric Steptoe, Donte Stallworth is going to give us equal production out of the slot and on 3rd down as even a beat up and hobbled Joe Jurevicius....well I've got some swamp land in Florida for you. I said multiple times last season that the #1 reason the offense struggled so mightily wasn't DA, it wasn't the early injury to Braylon...it was the loss of JJ and I stand by that.

Sooo....apparently this means we are now drafting one if not two WR in the draft (a #2 AND a slot?)....so there goes that idea of actually using our few precious draft picks on improving the defense. Put it this way, there's already a whole thread about the fact we need to trade down to acquire more picks to fill all of our holes...and that was BEFORE we for sure needed to draft a WR. Guess this means we just have to trade down two or THREE times eh??

I lose more faith in this organization every week.

I respect the heck out of JJ ..... but at 34, with bad wheels (IIRC, 7 knee surgeries in less than a year) .... it probably wasn't going to happen anyway ..... and certainly not at $2.4 million.

I will be incredibly surprised if he plays another down in the NFL. I really can't see any other team taking a chance on a guy with his recent medical history, especially at age 34.

I would have considered him a "bonus" if he could have played at all this year ... but certainly not a "plan".

Some people actually relate to the players who give a damn. Sure, your making a good point from a football standpoint, but from the human standpoint, many fans like ME will miss JJ and resent the fact he was released.

I understand that.

Reports were floating that he was given a opportunity to adjust his contract and he chose not to do so.

I think it would have been nice had he retired a Brown. I guess that wasn't important to him.

Bottom line is we just didn't see him filling any long term role with the squad. He may have been able to help this year.....but his roster spot would have meant someone else had to be cut....and possibly someone who might still be helping the team 5 years from now.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

How is this dumb?

Jurevicius is a 34 year old wide receiver coming off a major injury. He wouldn't take a pay cut, so they released him.

Ah, the sound of reason. This is exactly the point.

There is a thread on here where people are applauding Tucker for redoing his deal. As an aging player coming off of a severe injury, many felt Tucker did the right thing. Joe is in the same situation but didn't reach an agreement, so now it's the FO who's jacked?

Wow, just heard it on SportsCenter.

It's a bittersweet situation. On one hand, I REALLY loved what he did for us and wish his whole career could have been here. On the other hand, I totally understand why it happened and wish so many here weren't calling it a stupid move by the new regime.

Farewell Joe. Thank you and good luck . . .

Sad day to be a Browns fan.
Man, I am bummed. If you needed a first down,.. throw the ball to Joe over the middle. And never a complaint.
I don't know what mankok is thinking, but I sure don't like the results so far.
Maybe they are just jealous of Detroit and want the #1 pick next year. They are sure headed that way.
Joe was a class act, and I wish him well.

I can only imagine the outrage some would have at Kokinis and Mangini if we didn't have JJ then went out and signed a 34 old receiver coming off of 7 knee surgeries and a staff infection plus a back surgery in his past. My god, if he had played for the Jets, it would have been even worse.

"He's injury prone."

"We should have found better uses for our money."

"Holt and Harrison are available, and we sign this guy."

"These guys are clueless. Who would bring in a guy with his injury history and at his age?"

(Or just insert any Donte Stallworth comments here, as they would apply.)_

I like JJ as much as the next guy. I went to Penn State while he was there and saw nearly every one of his home games during his career. That being said, he had an opportunity to stay with the Browns, and decided not to.

Some of you guys are acting like Jim Brown or Bernie Kosar died. An older, broken down player was released. This isn't a guy who spent the best years of his career here. It's sad for him, but what's best for the team on the field just can't be keeping him at his salary when we don't even know if he'll be able to play.

There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.

Wow some serious overreaction by some in this thread. not only did JJ not want to restructure, he phsically isn't gonna be near where he once was and is on the downside of his career, this actually could be the last place he played, cause wherever he goes (if anywhere) he's gonna be fighting for a final roster spot. Goodness the guy has had a good NFL career and has a great character, but he isn't what he once was.

Good move by the Browns, though decent JJ wasn't in the future plans and if he didn't want to work with the organization he pretty much set his terms so then good luck in the future. I don't blame JJ for not restructuring BTW, I doubt he's not gonna get paid close to what he would have made this season.
