EXCLUSIVE: Browns Release Kevin Shaffer

By Site Staff

Posted Mar 12, 2009

Scout.com's Adam Caplan reports this evening that Cleveland Browns right tackle Kevin Shaffer has been released following a failure to reach agreement on a new contract.

When the Cleveland Browns released Joe Jurevicius last evening after failing to reach a new contract agreement, a message was sent.

That message got even clearer today, as multiple sources have informed Scout.com's Adam Caplan that the team has failed to come to an agreement with RT Kevin Shaffer, and that the offensive lineman will be released.

Emails to the team requesting confirmation were not yet returned.

Shaffer signed with the Browns as the team’s left tackle in 2006, sliding over to the right tackle slot in 2007 after the team drafted LT Joe Thomas with the third pick in the draft, a move that the player initially disliked.

Shaffer was an expensive signing for then-GM Phil Savage. Inking the Falcons tackle to a six-year deal with $12 million in guaranteed money. Savage was gambling that Shaffer would continue the development seen over the first few years of his career.

After being part of the one of the league’s best offensive lines in 2007, Shaffer’s performance ebbed in 2008, in part, perhaps, due to the loss of Ryan Tucker at the right guard position next to him. The combination of Rex Hadnot and Shaffer manning the right side was visibly less effective than the year before.

The team, clearly viewed the contact out of line with the tackle’s performance. If Shaffer is released, there will be some significant salary cap impacts both this year and in the future. While the team will save $1.455 million of cap space by cutting Shaffer, they will also assume $4.56 of "dead" cap space due to bonuses rolled forward into this year.

The release makes the Browns thin at yet another position. Ryan Tucker, if healthy, may be a candidate to return to the right tackle position

A source close to the player has told Scout.com that the door is not entirely closed to his return. At this point, however, the big right tackle is free to seek employment with other teams

credit also goes to devildawg for calling it earlier today.

Wow are we thin all over the place. Now I"m praying for Tuckers Health like a maniac. Would you risk it on that big Alabama tackle now or one of the better ranked guys? Can you take a RT at 5?? Or another in the 2nd round?

Didn't see that one coming......They obviously have a plan...I just don't know what it is. We have no Viable replacements for the guys they have let go or let walk...it is interesting though. Right now in the draft staying at 5 they could go Tackle or WR or LB...keep em guessing EM..You got me.

Wow. This tells me that we will be lucking o-line early. Maybe even in the first. Personally, I'd prefer we go linebacker in the first and Loadholt in the 2nd.

I'm trying to find a right tackle on this roster. It sure as Hell ain't Tucker.

Goldberg? Yeah, right We gonna go after some damned risk like Runyan? *shudder*

This one will have to be explained to me by someone smarter than myself. Otherwise, we're looking at someone in the draft.......

Andre Smith on the right side is now a strong possibility.

and didn't we let some promising UDFA go? i think scott young or something?

mourgrym - i would want NOTHING to do with andre smith. many teams took him off the board. the guy has a terrible attitude, bad attitude in interviews, just left out of no where at the combine, showed up overweight at his pro day, and could only do 19 reps. quinn benched more. that should be scary.

It's a questionable move for sure. The only thing I can think of is that they expect to accumlate more picks this year after trading down (or trading DA/BE).

With DA's bonus being paid today/tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised to see him traded for picks soon.

I think not. Crabtree or defense.
Not much in terms of right tackles who can start right away outside of the first round. Loadholt will be a 3rd rounder, but we don't have a 3rd round pick. It's easier to find a right tackle than it is most of the other positions of need we have though, and Ryan Tucker is one of our best linemen when healthy (whenever that is). Isn't he due for a healthy year after missing all of 2008?

With the way the organization has been tearing up contracts, I wish Fraley was making $3 million per

My guess is they just watched the Colts game last night and after they got finished laughing and puking, they decided it would be best to let him go. When a 240 pound LB pushes over a 300+ pound lineman like nothing ...it is time to move on.

For what it's worth, a certain site that doesn't like to be quoted on this one is saying that Shaffer's agent is saying the team is interested in re-signing him.

Looks like they didn't want to pay the roster bonus of $1.5 million.

Never been a Shaffer fan...but that´s just soo dumb on so many levels...

1. last year there were 4th/5th round offers for him on draft day...now we cut a durable and relatively cheap (2.65mil base salary) 29yo OT with 6years starting experience because MnKok believes he makes too much...Shaffer will get MORE tomorrow by 1 of the many OT desperate teams.....I seriously question the brains of Ralph and Chief Wiggum if they think 2.65mil is too much for an even below average 29yo RT nowadays....what....were...they...thinking? Seriously, what? "He´s ok for 1.5 but not for 2.65?" Really?

2. we just created another need....was this really necessary?

3. Is an ex-Jet FA-OT out there?

i really think lerner dropped the ball again with these 2 clowns..they don't explain their moves, and their moves desperately need explained because they make no sense thus far.

Well someone was gonna say it lol. This is a great draft class for tackles especially right tackles. I dont think we will have much of a problem filling Shaffers shoes and I say that as the only Shaffer fan around here lol.

U may be right Toad, The Jets just did the same thing with OG B. Moore although they flirted with signing Kemoeatu.

U should be thrilled with this move .. he didn't provide good depth ...

Toad ... I;m sure Fraley would re-structure .. *L* ..

If u find someone smarter than U to explain this one .... let me know if there smarter than me .. cause I need this one explained to me too ..

U and I have a pretty good grasp of this game ... but this one has me as befuddled as anything we've done since our return .. and thats alot of befuddlement ... *L* ...

Mangini wants a strong run game, Kokinis wants big mauling lineman especially from center to RT. This one isnt surprising at all.

but tucker was reputed to be a much stronger run-blocker than pass-blocker. in that sense, this move still makes no sense.

is it possible, that with the economy, lerner is looking for players worth their salaries???

Now all we need is a runner...sigh. Jamal just doesn't have the wheels or vision he used to. JMHO But I always thought Schaffer to be better in Run blocking than pass protection. This is more financials than anything...although he can be upgraded but it creates another hole. Something is going on here, what it is I don't know. Is there a blockbuster around the corner. This is just out of the ordinary it seems. What are they creating so much space for?

He doesn't fit any of the criteria that Mangini specified he wanted in a player...plus he stinks and is the exact opposite of a gamer and is extremely overpaid...

he lists himself at 312 and it'd be a bargain considering he was a top 5 pick who was very successful at LT his rookie season. that said, it's just a rumor that's unlikely to happen so relax

unless devildawg says so. then it'll happen, apparently.

- We haven't been to the playoffs in 7 years.

- We won 4 games last year.

- We haven't scored a touchdown in what 5 games?

- Hang on to Joe Thomas, Hang on to Josh Cribbs, try to hang on the Shaun Rogers, and then release the entire team for all I care.

Kokinis is looking for Maulers. Dbrick is a less aggressive version of Kevin Shaffer.
