Cleveland Browns sign Seattle Seahawks OL Floyd Womack by Mary Kay Cabot / Plain Dealer Reporter Friday March 13, 2009, 5:48 PM BEREA -- The Browns today signed unrestricted free agent offensive lineman Floyd Womack, a source told the Plain Dealer. Womack, an eight-year veteran of the Seattle Seahawks, is a versatile lineman who can play all line positions except center. Originally a fourth-round pick of the Seahawks in 2001, he's started 47 of the 90 games he played with the Seahawks. Womack will most likely be slated for the right side of the line. The Browns released starting right tackle Kevin Shaffer on Thursday, but might re-sign him at a reduced salary. Terms of Womack's deal were undisclosed. link

It seems like a good signing.
He could probably back up both RG and RT while Tucker and Hadnot start.
you had a good run Hank.

I like Womack, always thought he was solid, and a pretty darn good run blocker.

Look like drive blocking is the desire...."Porkchop" isn't very nimble, but he can grunt it out with anybody.

I think he'll battle Tucker for the RG spot.

Good signing. It's always good to have backup offensive lineman around who can play multiple positions. Now we have three backups who can play multiple line positions (McKinney, Freidman, and Porkchop.)
And who doesn't like an offensive lineman named Porkchop. One of the best nicknames around. Much better than ManKok.
Also, did anyone notice what team Womack hasn't played for?

Fits with the MO so far this off season ...
we've released and signed nuttin but BUMS ... were like a revolving door for BUMS ... *L* ..
all were doing is recycling one bum for another ..
counting on Tuck bro ... not good .. he'll be a nice surprise if he is healthy for 1/2 the games ... anything more than that is a bonus ...
I am not upset at all with how things have gone so far ... we've done nuttin stupid or nuttin real intelliligent othetr than the KW trade .. thats was GOOD .. VERY VERY GOOD ... and getting Bowens in for a pass rushing specialist and a good STer ...
other than that .... were .... basically treading water so far ...

j/c was curious to see the seahawk side's take on this. sounds like he signed with us for a chance to start, not to back up anyone. Quote:
'Pork Chop' leaves Seahawks to sign with Browns
By CLARE FARNSWORTH P-I REPORTER
The kid from Cleveland, Miss., has found his way to Cleveland, Ohio.
Floyd "Pork Chop" Womack, a versatile and valuable offensive lineman for the Seahawks, has signed with the Browns. The Cleveland Plain Dealer first reported the deal late Friday afternoon.
Womack, a fourth-round draft choice in 2001 out of Mississippi State, started at both tackle and guard positions in his eight-year career with the Seahawks. Fourteen of his 46 starts came last season, when the Seahawks' offensive line was decimated by injuries.
Womack, 30, moved in at right guard and made eight starts after Rob Sims suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the opener. Womack then moved to left guard and started the final six games after Mike Wahle also was lost for the season because of a shoulder injury.
Earlier in his career, Womack also started at left tackle and right tackle. But he also had been plagued injuries.
Womack credited his ability to stay healthy last season to losing weight during the offseason. He dropped 25 pounds, putting him at 320 -- the lowest he had weighed since junior high school back in Cleveland, Miss.
"I just decided it was something I needed to do if I wanted to prolong my career," Womack said near the end of the 2008 season.
The Seahawks were interested in re-signing Womack, but he likely would have remained a backup. With the Browns, Womack is expected to have a chance to start on the right side, because the club released right tackle Kevin Shaffer on Thursday.
The deal marked the second free-agent loss in as many days for the Seahawks, after backup defensive tackle Howard Green signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets on Thursday.

unless I missed something Friedman and McKinney are UFAs and have not been re-signed by the Browns. Is this correct?

So we lose Friedman,Mckinney and Schaeffer, and we've gained Porkchop and Goldberg. Looks like subtraction by addition to me. One team's junk is another team's junk.

The more I think about porkchop, the more I like him.
I agree.....not earth shattering, but better than many seem to think.
He will start on this team, and be a solid player.

solid?? .. hes been in the league for 6,7 or 8 years and has not reached solid yet .... but now he will .. *LOL* ... well all righty then ... its the orange helmer syndrome at its best .... peenie ... he could not start with Seattle and the right side of there line has STUNK for the last 3 or 4 years ... he could not beat out BELOW AVERAGE there ... and now all of a sudden hes going to be "solid" ,,, do me a favor and define solid for me .. *L* .. we replaced ONE BUM with ANOTHER BUM ... now, I think he may be a better fit ... but am not sure yet as we do not know what our plans are as of right now .. and even if he is a better fit .. he will be only a SLIGHT UPGRADE at most ... he has been a BUM and did not all of a sudden become solid cause hes on our team .. Psst ... and just like donte last year .. we all best start praying he can stay healthy .. cause without playing much he has still managed to miss significant stretches of time .... to the tune of "one way or another ... were gonna get cha get cha get cha' ... ONE BUM TO ANOTHER .. ONE BUM TO ANOTHER ...

KS is a bum, but he would have started for the right side of the Hawks line last year......whereas "pork chop" (lol) didn't. If it is possible to downgrade on KS (and bro I didn't think it was possible when the off season began) we have achieved it. I still believe we will draft a new RT, and "pork chop" (again...lol) will be depth. If not it will suck to be BQ/DA worse than last year with Necktie.

If no one is drafted (and again I think we will draft someone) then yeah Tuck probably plays RT (bad idea with his age and injury history) and Womack would be the RG (bad idea because he sucks...lol).
To be upbeat and positive though, I honestly think we will probably draft a RT in rounds 1 or 2, and Tuck will be our RG (until he get's hurt). Womack will provide depth.

Ohh, they've left themselves little choice. The only current RT on the roster is Tuck and again his age and injury history counting on him would be just DUMB. It's not that I'm Madam Chloe, but unless they sign someone else I don't think they have much of a choice but to draft someone

Not to bust up the kind discourse here, but I'm all for drafting nothing but first & second round "trenchers" for the next ten years,...(and forever if I last that long,... )

Lol.....yeah I'm sort of the same way. Listen if they get a stud RT out of this draft you'll see me take back everything negative I've said about them dumping Necktie. I'm just afraid we are looking at a right side of Hadnot/Womack.......and Tuck at RT.
Like I said earlier though, the positive is they can't be that dumb to do that........can they?? Nahh.......we've got a young QB and no way they throw him to the wolves with a right side like that.......they just don't have a history of doing dumb things like that in NY or Ratville.

theres a bunch of Bums still out there in FA including Shaff himself ... I highly doubt there will be a big market for him ...
we'll have another RT before the draft .. does not men we won't draft one .. just that we will sign one of the FA BUMS before the draft ..
were not done in BUMVILLE .. *L*

Yep....he is a solid player, and would have started for us last year.
Just because he didn't start for his team doesn't mean he can't start for other teams.
Don't try to turn that into anything other than what I said...no.....he won't make pro-bowls, but he is a decent, solid player.
See....great means that....top level....good means the next level, and solid means low level starters and fringe starters.
Fringe starters includes top level back-ups.
Just to educate you on what I mean by soild.
I don't want a lack of communication or misunderstanding to interfere with the conversation.

I'm at the point I don't care about "# 5 money,..." With Smith (Alabama) in the tanker, I'm inclined to take this Robinson kid from Oklahoma before he gets to Pittsburgh,....there are some others there I'm overlooking too,...the "other" Smith kid (?) and Michael Oher.
I just want a lineman. I am sick of wasted pick Winslow's and Edwards.'
There just does not appear to be a RT / FA out there, but I am always willing to see the update,...
Another side discourse would be to find that special kid who's been playing TE as a blocker for all of his college career and make him an OLineman, ala Doug Dieken,....someone you could steal in a real late round or bring in as an undrafted walk-on.

So,it comes down to drafting a RT at 5,or hoping and praying one falls to you in the 2nd. Niether option sounds like a solid business plan.

Where's this STUD comin' from???...
It ain't comin' at 5...Sorry...J Smith and Monroe are both LT's...Franchise type...
You can get MORE NEGATIVE if we even SNIFF Andre Smith at 5...The dude's put the word out...HE HAS NO WORK ETHIC...Killer for a big man...He'll be the next fat-ass BUST of an OL in the NFL...Watch...
Then where???
Loadholt at 36???...Britton???
IMO...There IS NO STUD RT available...Not worth any Value anyway...Cause NO WAY we go RT at 5...DUMB...
I take Duke Robinson at 36 over ANY RT available at that time...
Who u got???...Convince me beyond a Curry/Crabtree at 5...
Go Browns!!!

Well, since you want me to play Madam Chloe again..lol....here we go. I am going to ASSume that your idea of trading BE for a mid 1st (let's say 16, because it's been mentioned trading with the Bolts before) and go from there........ 5.....Crabtree. I don't think Curry will be there, and Crab is the BPA and allows us to trade Braby. 16........Oher. I live down here, and if he were to fall I would love to make him my RT for the next 10 years. Imo he's not a LT, but would be a monster at RT........perfect body with the long arms and big frame.........plenty strong enough. Yeah I think he would be a STUD RT. See there is my scenario for getting a true stud at RT.........now if you can get your crystal ball to work we might both be able to look smart come draft day. There are other scenario's (including drafting Smith in round 2.......I'm not a fan of that, but it's plausible). I'm with you on Smith......wouldn't touch him, because he just is too big of a risk imo.

I think Andre Smith will be considered for the Browns his workout wasnt nearly as bad as some are making it out to be lol. Couple teams are dieing for this guy to drop to them and are sending out a lot of negative stuff cough cough Carolina.
Now I think a guy that could come in and start day 1 at RT and should come heap is Loadholt from Oklahoma. got some issues but hey he gets a little coaching he is a more athletic Ryan Tucker.

We are going to have at least 2 (possibly 3 with DA traded....or 4 with a trade down from 5) 2nd rounders. So maybe someone like Loadholt is taken with one of those picks..........and he would start RT day 1 with the current guys here.
