Bout damn time...lol...Another J-E-T...Let r' rip...

The Cleveland Browns announced today that they have signed unrestricted free agents Eric Barton and Floyd Womack.

“We are pleased to have Eric and Floyd join the Browns,” said Browns General Manager George Kokinis. “Both will add a great deal of experience and versatility to the team.”

Barton, a veteran of 10 NFL seasons, was originally a fifth-round draft choice of Oakland in 1999. The 31-year old played five seasons with the Raiders before joining the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in 2004.

In his NFL career, Barton has appeared in 136 regular season games, including 101 starts. In 2008 with the Jets, he started all 16 games and collected 127 tackles, the second-highest total of his career. He added 1.5 sacks, four passes defensed, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

Barton was a four-year letterman at the University of Maryland (1995-98), where he was a first-team All-ACC selection as a senior.

Womack, 30, was a fourth-round draft choice of the Seahawks in 2001. In his career, he has played in 90 games with 46 starts and opened games at every position along the line except center.

In 2008, he started all 14 games in which he appeared, splitting time between left and right guard.

The 6-4, 330-pounder was a four-year letterman at Mississippi State (1997-2000) where he started the final 29 games of his career at tackle, and was a first-team All-SEC choice as a senior.

Very good signing. He may be a 10 year vet but he has 3-4 good years left and he runs CIRCLES around what he is replacing.

Good job....

Yeah, can't say i'm dissapointed. He fits in well for us as an ILB. He'll team well with D'Qwell. It also gives us backup if Bell doesn't show much promise.

Although didn't he blow some big play last season with a personal foul?

He's Andra Davis, but more instinctive.

He isn't a pass rusher.

Thats true and then......

He plays with tons more aggresion.......

which leads to more tackles behind the LOS and when he hits you.....its more than a arm tackle.

One of the biggest changes will be the opposing team will have to account for him when making adjustments.......

unnlike in the past just having a sideline to sideline guy like AD running players down and dragging them to the turf BEYOND the LOS.

Barton aint Spectacular or a game changer but he is a huge upgrade to what we had.

I agree with that statement... Barton will be an upgrade and more aggressive...

We saw for the past couple years in what we had with some of these guys..... where did it get us...6-10....10-6.....4-12....next year...?-?

before we start shooting down all these signings.....lets give them a chance.....

Are we or are we not suppose to support this team... that is why we are on these message boards.....

I like what the front office has done this off season....Adding a lot of depth and competition for 2009 as well as some smart veterans which Phil was never a big fan of unless he spent $25-30M. Romeo must be pissed to see some veterans finally coming in....

Cutting JJ, Shaffer, and the other stiffs is no big deal to me although JJ was the one (if healthy) who could be missed the most as evidence in 2008.

Womack was a Seahawk! What happened did they run out of Jets?
The way we're signing ex Jets you'd think they were the greatest team since the 72 Dolphins.

Well, they may not have been great, but their D was better than ours.

Too bad we've signed nothing but backups until Barton. I was hoping we'd grab him, even before they mentioned him visiting. Solid ILB that actually fills a STARTING hole.

I know "Pork Chop" Womack as well. Not sure how good he is in comparison to Shaffer, but the guy is a starter. So at least we're addressing the front end of the roster as well as the back end now.

Time to switch to the Ravens...lol...

I'd take a serious look at Samari Rolle at 3-5M a year for a few...

And I'd seriously look at Torry Holt...

Then go to the draft...With a Pick for Anderson...

And get the 17 pick for Edwards sorry ass...

So now it appears Tucker is a right tackle and Womack a right guard.

Oh, and WHOA! Did NOT see the Browns signing Barton!

Barton to the Browns was probably the worst kept secret from this organization.

My sarcasm is indicitive of the fact that on the first day of free agency, I was touting Barton as Davis's replacement because of the Jet-connection. I'm just surprised it took so damned long to happen.

People, Barton isn't a great player, but he's better than Davis has been for several years. Don't expect too much out of him.

It's an improvement. Not leaps and bounds better, but better nonetheless.

Let's put it this way:

No one should be expecting Barton going to the pro bowl or being among the best MLB in the league. However, he's a much better fit next to D'Qwell than Dra ever was, and will actually make a tackle behind the line.

He's enough of an improvement to fill the hole for this year, maybe even next year as well.

How do you think this is going ot affect the play of DQ? I mean a slight upgrade next to him should help in theory right? And given that I did not have the opportunities to watch as many Browns games because of where I live, what is the overall perception of DQ anyway?

I'm fairly certain Mangini aint bringing guys in who will sabotage his career. They must be stand up solid guys who will stand in the gap until they build
the roster up again from the youngsters.

The fact that so many are former Jets tell us that he isn't the Napolean everyone makes him out to be. These guys must like the system he pushed in NY.Must like his coaching style. Theer are guys who like structure and discipline in their life.

Some seem to think this guy is haphazardly slapping together a team with zero forethought or planning. I'd be fairly certain he'd like to have upper tier talent but in no way will overpay for it.

This regime said they will build from the draft so we better strap ourselves in for a wait!

+1...

Not to mention the Coaches he's been with that have come here...How much more EVIDENCE do these "Lawyers" need???

And we've got enough to win NOW...No Bowl...But WINS...And we ain't done yet...This ain't a teardown...Not a rebuild...But a re-tool...

I kinda have a theory on all the jets being signed. With the tremendous amount of work in front of Mangini, it's gotta be a comfort zone thing to have guys he doesn't have to teach HIS way too.

If you look, he's let either marginal, ageing or recovering injured (JJ, Shaffer, AD, Jones) players go and traded a player that may have limited years left (winslow) but who's trade value won't ever be higher than it is now.

In thier places he's brought in guys on the Oline that can play various positions (no, not at an All Pro level, but decent) a TE that has some talent but not an All Pro, some LB's that are role players and have played the 3-4 and understand his way of doing things.

I guess if you look at the whole thing, it's starting to round out just a little. I'm getting a sense of what he's doing now.

Geez, I hope I'm right..

I think it also helps Mangini sell his philosophies to the Browns he's inherited. Coaches and players that have a history with a coach and are willing to follow him to another team can only be a good thing, hopefully these new guys will help improve Manginis image that the Cleveland media is so determined to destroy.

took along time to get this deal done. Barton was the worst kept secret but he is here now. He will be an improvement.

I think the reason so many jets, they know the Mangini system. There are going to be some hard times yet. But with these guys here, it will stabilize the locker room and put a quick end to the malcontents questioning things- at least in theory that is how it should work.

I'm just fine with all of these Jet signings- are they an upgrade to what we had? Yes. Most are depth, but they are better than what was here. We still need a replacement for Schaffer and RT. Tucker at tackle and Womack at guard is a start, but i still say we can't count on Tucker to stay healthy for the entire year. Maybe Schaffer resigns, thats not all bad.

How can Schaffer resign when he's already been released? It would be nice to see him re-sign with the Browns though. j/k couldn't resist.

Sadly, it does feel as if they are trying to pick at every little thing he does..... Putting a negative spin on everything the Browns do.

Kinda makes me think that it's more about the Browns not allowing much access then it is about reality.. More like retaliation for not letting the media in or something..

IT IS ABOUT TIME...dang...Diam ...Barton is a notch above Dra...not top notch but he has better ..or rather he has instincts..

Now Womack is someone I also know about..and he is better than Shaffer..but it appears Tucker will mann the RT spot and Womack his natural position of OG..

I think its a fairly sizeable upgrade over Dra. Barton is a good 3-4 ILB, its finally a real upgrade. Plus the fact that DQ will be a much better player when the guy next to him isn't constantly leaving him out to dry. Dra always leaving his gap to go whiff at someone really didn't add to DQ's game.

This is a move I really, really like. Now go draft Everett Brown!

In the NFL, you can't be a leader if you can't play very well. Davis is a high-character guy, but didn't play well. Hadn't for a couple of years. He had plenty of leadership qualities, but it didn't look that way because he wasn't a solid player.

I thought we were supposed to have a GM. - From the look and sound of it, it seems as if Mangini is telling the GM what to do and who to sign. No?
