Browns sign OT St. Clair

Tackle John St. Clair has opted to sign with the Browns, and to spurn the Bears.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times, Biggs St. Clair has agreed to terms on a three-year, $9 million deal, with $600,000 guaranteed.

The Bears had offered exactly half that amount — $4.5 million over three years.

But Biggs says that the contract appears to be a series of one-year deals; this suggests that sizable roster bonuses are owed to St. Clair at the start of the 2010 and 2011 league years.

The Bears now need to find a new right tackle.

I have to say this is the first move by Mangini and Koke that i don't like. I'd rather have Tucker or Womack at RT then this guy.

Ummmm...yay?

Great if this was a depth signing but well...he's not...

Funny thing, there was a picture on the front page of ESPN of Kyle Orton..in the background was St. Clair getting beat by a defensive end of the saints

And now we can see it in a Browns jersey...

Ah well, here's hoping he has a great year.

I know absolutely nothing about this guy, but when I think of Offensive Lines or just Offensive Competency, one of the last teams I think of is the Chicago Bears.... and we just paid twice what they were willing to pay to retain him??

Someone PLEASE sell me on this one

St. Clair Agrees to Deal

By Site Staff

Posted Mar 17, 2009

John St. Clair has agreed to a three-year contract with the Cleveland Browns for $9 million. The agreement follows the team's release of last year's starting RT Kevin Shaffer.

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting this afternoon that John St. Clair has agreed to a three-year contract with the Cleveland Browns for $9 million. The agreement follows the team's release of RT Kevin Shaffer, a story reported first on the Orange and Brown Report.

The OBR can report exclusively that Browns continued to discuss bringing Shaffer back to the team over the last week, but remained far apart with last year's starting right tackle. After having a similar offer rejected by Shaffer, the Browns turned their attention to St. Clair. The veteran tackle quickly reached agreement following a frustrating negotiation process with the Bears.

Come on guys...Its a ONE YEAR Show me Contract. So before we build this into some Long term investment into our OL...we got rid of Shaffer and are getting St. Clair one had a contract that we didn't want to bare at all. The other...nothing unless we see GAME from him.

I don't know...for some reason faintly I here...Dre, Dre, Dre....Dre Smith of Earl in the background

600k guaranteed isn't too bad......i guess it just depends how the 9 mil is cut up, but he isn't making so much he couldn't be a back-up and fill in if Tucker can't go the full season.....I really think Womack is being viewed as a RG.

I can't say I know much about the guy, so for now i will assume he is at least a pretty average Joe.....much like Shaffer..

I think it is obvious Shaffer was a money cut....he was probably offered what this guy was.

The only thing I don't like about the Schaffer deal is he was a pretty fair LT...and in back-up terms....pretty darn good. He offered some pretty decent insurance if Thomas gets dinged for a few plays, or a few hundred plays.

I believe this guy started at LT for da Bears.... and was probably a below average LT... much like Shaffer. I worry more about even more of a decline at RT than him as a back up LT....

Now THAT'S my type of deal! You do well, you get paid good money. You don't, you get essentially league minimum and we get rid of you after 1 year.

Well I think thats 600 grand in a signing bonus...ergo "guaranteed"

He still will have a salary I'm sure for 09 - of course he would have to make the team to earn it...but if he does I'm sure he'll make a Mil or two??? Still what I consider a Show Me Contract.

Found this on the signing:

St. Clair bolts for Browns
By
Brad Biggs
on March 17, 2009 4:31 PM

John St. Clair has signed three-year contract with the Cleveland Browns worth a total of $9 million.

The deal contains $1.25 million guaranteed, which is believed to be less than the Bears had offered in a $4.5 million, three-year contract. St. Clair, however, will earn $2.85 million in the first year of the deal, and that represents 63 percent of the total value of the Bears' offer.

Now, the Bears will have to venture out into the market and find a right tackle or draft one high in the draft or both.

If he's gonna make almost $3mill this year i would've just kept Shaffer another year.

that's less than half of schaffer's cap number...if this guy plays at 75% of schaffer, it was still a strong business decision. it'll be up to the coaches to make sure he's serviceable if he's supposed to be a starter.

How the heck are the coaches going to make sure he's serviceable??? It's the people who are bringing these guys in jobs to make sure these guys are serviceable...........thus if not DON'T bring em in. He isn't a rookie, and he's either got talent or he don't. If not all the coaching in the world won't turn a turd into a Snickers bar...lol.

Don't get me wrong, I love having Joe, but I am/was more disappointed with Shaffer as a RT than at LT.....he was a better LT. He just isn't big enough, or a classic drive blocker, which I fancy at RT.

he was and then their 1st round pick chris williams got hurt, so they put him in at left tackle, and he was awful. i mean real bad. and that's against mediocre competition in the nfc north. this dude is gonna get blown up against the likes of baltimore and pittsburgh.

i wouldn't mind him as a depth signing because of his starting experience, but if he's our starting right tackle, i'm worried.

i really hope he's just a band aid for some young guy we pick within the next 2 drafts.

I'm with you on this....Surly Mangini INC. is not going into this season with this group as the starters....I'm really hoping that he is just adding much needed depth....it seems this has been one of our trouble areas the past fews years as far as staying healty....I like the signing for depth...but not as a starter....

Ugh...

Tucker
Womack
... and now St. Clair

I get that we didn't want to carry Shaffer's contract any more, but I gotta say... if we end up going into the season with one of these guys as our starting RT, we're going to wish we'd kept him around. "Necktie" is going to become "Turnstile" because not one of these guys has the quickness to go solo on the edge. They're going to need lots of help or we'll be down a QB or two before we get halfway through the season.

Here's hoping we score a RT who can start in the draft...

This guy sucks. he got bulger pounded when he was their right tackle. I use to remember when we had our awful o-line with butch, and I use to watch him play with the rams, and I thought to myself, this guy is worse than anyone on our sorry o-line.

I'd rather have BARRY STOKES.

Hmmm I told you guys he's probably going to be the starting RT..They may still start Tucker and have him as a backup..but it's clear they do not want a lot of money tied up in the line.

I don't think KS is much better than JSC........he's probably a better pass blocker..........slightly. They both stink though..lol....and we haven't improved the team one iota on Offense so far this season. Hopefully the draft leads to some improvements.

Don't know too much about him, but from what I've read, he's improved over the years since he went to Chicago.

Now whether he's improved from a bum to a semi-bum is still in question. I can't see how he'd be any worse than Sowells.

Savage must have really wanted that guy to succeed, because I can't figure out how he continually made the roster. I watched him at camp getting beat left and right, drill after drill. So if we improve that, then I'm fine with it.

I still don't understand this move. I can understand wanting to replace Shaffer but why not wait and replace him with some better instead of replacing him with someone even less talented for probably only a million or 2 less this year then what you were paying Shaffer.

i watch a lot of the bears football. they get shown here, and if the browns are on at the same time, i have to watch them on the internet so i always have the bears on the tv (2 games at once baby)

he's a horrible left tackle. to the point where you cover your eyes.

as a right tackle, it is not the end of the world, but i just worry because of the speed and size of these 3-4 rushers that pittsburgh and baltimore throw at you.

it's cool that it's a short deal, it's not a boatload of money, but i just hope they have something else lined up, through the draft, or whatever. because as much as i love tucker as a player, you can't trust him to play all 16....

???? Our line does have a boatload of money tied up in it! So we got rid of KS and picked up this guy for less. We still have Stieny and Thomas. How much $$ is that? I seem to remember Fraley signing an ok deal.
I see what you are saying about the money, but with just our LT and LG we have a LOT tied up.
I'm cool with the signing. Tucker will be a rock and this guy will play some as a backup.

While we haven't improved much I think everything is still good. I think these guys are all PLAYERS. lockerroom guys. Maybe not super talented but I can think of another team like that and they won a bunch of superbowls.
